Countdown to Your Wedding Day
To help you get a better understanding of how to plan a wedding and when you should be making certain
decisions, here’s a timeframe you can follow that should ensure that your wedding goes off as smoothly as possible.
10 - 12 Months Before
2 - 3 Months Before
If you haven’t done it already, this is a good time to announce
your engagement and introduce your respective families. Since
most reception halls and churches have busy wedding schedules,
it is also important to book both as early as possible, preferably
at least a year in advance of your wedding day. It’s also a good
idea to start putting together a guest list around this time and ask
your parents whom they’d like to invite as well. Also, since your
budget will determine just about every aspect of your wedding,
sitting down and determining what you can spend, and developing a savings plan should be first and foremost.
Finalize your guest list and mail out your invitations. If your guest
list includes a considerable amount of people who are spread out
geographically, mail the invitations as close to 12 weeks in advance as possible. This is also a good time to finalize your menu
choices for your guests, and find all your wedding accessories
such as the ring pillow, candles, etc. Also, since it is tradition to
provide gifts for those in the wedding party as well as the parents of the bride and groom, this is a good time to decide on and
purchase those gifts. Just to be safe, confirm that all groomsmen
have ordered their tuxedos and finalize all transportation, both
to and from the wedding and to the airport for your honeymoon.
6 - 9 Months Before
This is the time when you want to start booking some services,
such as a florist, caterer, a DJ/band, photographer and videographer. However, some of the more experienced DJs and bands as
well as photographers and videographer might have their schedules booked a year in advance, so this might be something you’ll
want to consider doing shortly after you get engaged and choose
a date. Also, this is a good time to inform any guests who will be
traveling significant distances of the date of your wedding. The
earlier your guests can book a flight, the less expensive that flight
will be.
Now may be a good time to consider dance lessons for the bride
and groom, if they are not comfortable dancing. Wouldn’t it be
fun to schedule a class for the whole bridal party? It could be a
fun way to relieve some anxiety.
This is also a good time to order gowns for both the bride and
bridesmaids, as some manufacturers require a few months to
ship to bridal shops. You might want to ask someone such as
your priest or rabbi to be the officiant of your wedding. And
much like out-of-town guests will save travel dollars the earlier
they learn of your wedding date, you will likely save money, too,
if you book your honeymoon around this time.
4 - 5 Months Before
1 - 2 Months Before
Schedule the first bridal-gown fitting. Also finalize the readings
you’d prefer during the ceremony and mail them out to anyone
who has agreed to do a reading. If your family prefers to host a
small gathering for close family and friends after the wedding rehearsal, the night before the wedding, this is a good time to order
any food or drinks you might want to serve that night, or make
a restaurant reservation. This is also time to make reservations
with a hair salon and make-up artist.
3 - 4 Weeks Before
Confirm your honeymoon arrangements and see if your wedding rings are ready. This is also when you should get your marriage license and check the guest list to see who has and hasn’t
RSVP’d. For those who have yet to RSVP, you might want to contact them so you can get a closer idea of what the head count will
be. You should also prepare and order your wedding program
around this time.
1 - 2 Weeks Before
Get a final attendance count and submit it to the caterer as soon
as you know of it, while also providing a final seating chart. Pick
up the wedding gown and tuxedo. Make sure the wedding party
picks up their attire. Also, finalize your vows and confirm all
wedding-day details such as transportation, photo schedules,
and addresses. And don’t forget to pack for your honeymoon.
This is a good time to decide on wedding invitations, of which
there are many styles to choose from. Also, now is ideal to start
hunting for a wedding cake by sampling a number of different
The Day Before
bakeries and their style of cakes before ultimately making a decision. Just to be sure, confirm that all of the bridesmaids have orThis is mainly when you rehearse for the ceremony and make
any final confirmations you might have to make. Also, make sure
dered their gowns and start looking for a tuxedo for the groom as
to get some sleep so you’ll look good in all of your wedding-day
well as the groomsmen. If you haven’t done so already, purchase
photos.

etc.) know of your intentions.

Wedding Whisperer
Dear Wedding Whisperer,
Dear Mrs. Whisperer,
I am getting married soon, and I have both a good stepdad
and a good father and I am close to both. How do I decide
which one to walk me down the aisle? Got ideas? ~
Jennifer, Wilmington
My wedding coordinator said, “no artificial flower
petals” for my beach wedding. Do you know why?
Thanks for your help! ~Mary Ann, Lumberton
Hello Jennifer,
Yes, fake flower petals are made of polyester which is
plastic. The don’t decompose, but sea turtles and birds
sometimes mistake them for food…which is fatal. So
fake petals are pretty trash on the beach, and you can
get a littering ticket for using them there! Use real flower
petals instead. Use fake ones indoors only on tables,
around centerpieces, or serving dishes, on the floor,
hallway, or the honeymoon bed.
Good news, there are many solutions! You discuss and
choose which is best for your family:
• if they get-along with each other, then both can walk
with you, one on each side, and answer the Officiant
give-away question together as “we do.”
• If they don’t get-along, one can walk you halfway,
stop to step aside, and you allow the other one to step
up to finish the walk.
Hi Mary Ann,
• Mother can walk you instead, or a sister, brother,
uncle, grandmother, grandfather can too. Do two
Dad & Daughter Dances with both men and request
each say a toast or a blessing at reception.
• You & your wedmate can walk together instead, and
Officiant can loudly ask Everybody “And who gives
their blessings to this new marriage?” and Everyone
answers “We do!”
Hello Wedding Whisperer,
We want my nephew and his dad to be a part of our
wedding, but they are both SOOOO shy they are afraid
to speak. And that ours is a gay wedding makes it more
awkward for them. Is there a way for them to still be a part
without a fuss? Thanks in advance for your suggestions! ~
Michael and Rayshon, Shallotte
Dear Wedding Whisperer,
We have a lot of guests of all ages coming to our
destination wedding here, so what do we offer for
entertainment without breaking the bank? ~ Amy,
Charlotte
Hello Amy,
You have several options: the beach is one free
entertainment for days or hours, and so are many public
parks, and some street festivals around here. Meals:
finding a fun, large restaurant and “going dutch” will
take up 2-4 hours. Ask your local wedding vendors for
more ideas, or surf your hotel website for “Things to
Do” or surf on TripAdvisor and Yelp for more popular
suggestions. Also, hotels often have card racks of
Attractions in the lobby for this purpose.
Hi Mike and Ray,
There is lots they can do without saying a word, or be in
the limelight too long:
• Ringbearers – don’t have to say one word, just hand
over the goods to the officiant
• Groomsmen -- stand behind you silently during
ceremony, hands folded, no fidgeting, breathe, relax
• Ushers – escort ladies to their seats beforehand, offer
them an elbow and wait for her to sit before leaving
• Play a musical instrument or man the audio/PA
system for ceremony music or DJ the dance music

Dealing With the Jitters
You are about to take the plunge. You should be a glowing
bride, but instead you are breaking out into a cold sweat. You
are panicky about more than just whether the flowers will
look right and if your mom or your mother-in-law will do
anything to embarrass you on your big day. You are worrying about your spouse-to-be. Can you live with the fact that
he can’t be interrupted during a baseball game or how he
leaves water all over the bathroom sink? Are you ready to
spend the rest of your life with the same person?
Relax! Pre-wedding jitters are common among those about to
get hitched. Occasionally, there are real reasons to call off a
wedding. But more often than not, it’s just a case of cold feet.
What should you do? First, go to a quiet place to think. Do
some deep breathing, and get in touch with your emotions.
Ponder things like:
• What you enjoy most about your spouse-to-be
• The moment you knew you wanted to spend the
rest of your life with him/her
• What you look forward to during your marriage
• Couples who have been married for years as a
source of inspiration
• Changes in your partner
Things like less bedroom activity or petty annoyances like the
fact that he didn’t empty the dishwasher this morning are related to wedding-planning stress. However, if your partner is
really acting in a way or doing things you don’t like or didn’t
know about him, such as abusing drugs or alcohol, speak to
him or a counselor. Assess if these are short-term issues or
ones that may persist after the big day. Serious problems may
warrant that you postpone or call off your wedding.
Most likely, you are both having the same jitters. If you have
time, arrange a romantic evening with your partner that is
free of talks about florists and photographers and away from
both of your mothers! It will ease the stress and reaffirm the
reasons why you are getting married in the first place.

How to Get Your Marriage License
To be legally married while in North Carolina, the couple must
have a marriage license from a North Carolina Register of Deeds
only. If you are a destination bride, do NOT get one from your
home state—all marriage licenses are filed at ceremony location
only. You must have the license physically present at the ceremony
so simply hand it to the officiant BEFORE you start the ceremony
and it is that person’s job to fill it out and file it for you, too.
WITNESSES: two witnesses are required. They may be anyone
over the age of 18 years. This includes relatives, friends, foreigners,
or friendly strangers who agree to sign for you. If eloping privately,
your officiant might help you get witnesses.
WHERE AND HOW: you two may get your license in ANY North
Carolina courthouse Register of Deeds office, within 60 days
before your wedding date. That license is valid to use absolutely
anywhere inside the state. Here is how:
• No blood test, no medical exam, no waiting period, no
residency or US citizenship required.
• License is valid immediately to use at wedding, but only for
next 60 days.
• Both bride and groom must be present in office.
• People over age 18 years or older--both must show 2
identifications: such as social security card (or they supply
an affidavit to sign stating why not) and driver’s license (or
government photo ID), or certified birth certificate, or US
passport, or military ID.
• If either of you are divorced within last 60 days, the clerk
might request to see a copy of divorce decree. Otherwise you
will swear a legal oath you are legally single, upon penalty of
perjury.
• NC license fee is $60 cash, and some counties let you pre-pay
the additional $10 for the certified copy (which happens after
the ceremony). OR, you may order the certified copy of your
license about 10 days AFTER the ceremony, from the issuing
courthouse
• FYI: your officiant does NOT issue copies. She or he only
returns your license to the issuing courthouse within 10 days,
usually by snail mail.
You can start the application process online too at nearby courthouses:

(near Wilmington, Leland, Wrightsville, Carolina,
Kure, Ft Fisher, Figure 8 and Topsail)
Brunswick County
(near Southport, Oak Island, St James, Supply, Shallotte,

Unique & Meaningful Vows
Some couples seek traditional wording for their vows, and others
do not want the flat, standard “to have and to hold, in sickness
and in health, ‘til death do us part”. Or they want non-religious
wording. Here are some alternative wedding phrases, which you
may borrow or modify for YOUR taste:
VOWS:
• I (name), take you (name) to be my husband/wife, my partner
in life and my one true love. I will cherish our union and love
you more each day. I will trust and respect you, laugh and
cry with you, loving you faithfully through good times and
hardship. I give you my hand, my heart, and my love, from
this day forward, for as long as we both shall live.
• (Name), I take you to be my wedded husband/wife. Before
these witnesses I vow to love you, respect you, and care for
you as long as we both shall live. I take you, with all your faults
and strengths, as I offer myself to you with all my faults and
strengths. I vow to do my best, and ask you do the same for me,
for the rest of our lives.
• (Name), my soul has two parts, the half I was born with and the
half I found in you. From this day forward you shall not walk
alone. Let my heart be your shelter and my arms be your home.
I will love you, comfort you, honor and keep you and forsaking
all others, be faithful to you. So today I take you as my dearest
friend, soulmate, and wife/husband for the rest of my days.
• (Shortness) I, (name), take thee (name), to be my wife/husband.
I promise to always be faithful and loving to you for the rest of
my life.
HUMOROUS:
All of your vows don’t have to be funny. You can insert a few funny
phrases or quote related movies:
• “to have and to hold...to be financially responsible for...”
• “…in sickness and in health...and when he wants to buy
expensive toys/play video games all day/watch football all
day...”
• Instead of “’til death do you part” use “to infinity and beyond.”
• Mentioning your hobbies or interests will make your vows
funny & personal. For example: I, (name), take you (name), to
be my wife even while (on the golf course/shopping online/at
the gym) for as long as we both shall live.
RINGS WORDING:
• (from movie “Corpse Bride”) With this candle I will light your
way in the Darkness. With this hand I will lift your sorrow.
Your cup will never be empty for I will be your wine. And with
this ring, I thee wed. (combined with Unity Candle ceremony).
• Come health, happiness and prosperity, I will stand with you.
Come illness, challenges and change, I will stand with you.
So I give you this ring as an everlasting sign of my love and
commitment to you.
• (from “The Princess Bride”) Mawage! Mawage is wot bwings
us togeder tooday. Mawage, dat bwessed awangment, dat
dweam wifin a dweam… And wuv, tru wuv, will fowoe you
foweva… So tweasure your wuv. (also: “As you wish”)
• This ring I give you, my personal gift and my personal promise,
of love and trust, and pride that you are my husband. We will
wear these rings, and the world will know that I am yours and
you are mine!
• This ring is a sign of my love and my commitment to you. For
with this ring, I thee wed, and the world will know, that you
live in my heart, my home is in your arms, and our souls share
the same sweet journey forever.
FINAL PRONOUNCEMENTS:
• So as you declare your love, promises and commitments
today, so shall you remain united from this day forth in the
eyes of God/our Creator/Jehovah/All that is Holy and those
who love you from this day on, into the fullness of time, thus I
pronounce you…
• (Shortness) As a symbol of my love, with this ring I thee wed.
• May these two soulmates remain heart-bound as One in the
eyes of all those who love you from this day forth and into the
fullness of time as I pronounce you…
KISS COMMANDS:
• Therefore it is my honor to pronounce you now, as your hearts
have always been, husband and wife.
• I ask you now to bless each other with a kiss.
• Ahoy worthy gentleman--Skipper, you may kiss your mermaid
bride!
• Ahoy me proud Beauty, you may kiss your salty sailor!
• I ask you now to seal the promises you have made, with a kiss.
• Friends, you may seal your vows with a kiss!
• I ask you now to start your new Journey together, with a kiss.
