From the Relieving Principal
4th May, 2016
Welcome to Term 2! This is a very busy time for the students. This term we have
Kindergarten off on their first excursion, Years 3 and 4 have an overnight visit to the museum
(hopefully the dinosaurs don’t come alive as in the movies) and Year 5 and 6 are off to the
snow and Canberra.
During this term Years 3 – 6 will be participating in Sports in Schools. This is a very exciting
program run by professional sport coaches, where the students will get to use a large variety
of different equipment.
Next week Year 3 and 5 are involved in NAPLAN and later in the term reports will be going
home (always an exciting time).
As you most probably know, Ms Paton, received a promotion on the last day of Term 1. She
is now principal of Harrington Park Public School. It is a bigger school (over 200 students
more than us) and much closer to home for her. She came back on Monday to say goodbye
to the students and I know that she will miss York. She really enjoyed her time here with our
community.
The rise in use of social media over the last few years has been enormous. In most instances
it is a fantastic tool. But (there’s always a but), it can be dangerous. Words once said, cannot
be taken back and once they are out there they do not disappear.
A lesson I do with our senior students might be helpful with your children. Take a piece of new
paper – imagine it is a friend. Looks lovely. Get them to crumple it up. Not as lovely. Get them
to try and smooth it out so it looks like it originally did. You can’t. If you say or write something
not nice, to or about someone, then no matter how hard you try, you might not get it back to
the original relationship.
Our annual school report is now on the school website. Please take a look at our
achievements from last year and our direction for the coming years.
I am personally looking forward to this term. There are lots of exciting events involving our
wonderful school community.

Chess is a game for all ages. It is easy to learn but
difficult to master.
We run Chess club every
Thursday at lunch in Mr Bhandarkar’s classroom. No

Students need to read 20 books by mid August to
receive the PRC certificate in December. Years 3 and
4, read “silver star” titles, years 5 and 6 “gold star”
titles. The requirement is a minimum of 15 specified
PRC books and 5 of the students own choice.
Students need to keep a list of their reading on
the PRC website. Time to do this at school is
limited and students can access the website
from their home computers and update their
reading record themselves.

STUDNT PORTAL – Loan History
On behalf of the P&C Committee we would like to
thank all our wonderful parents who assisted at the
Mother’s day stall.
This year we banked $3577, which was a profit of
$1400 after taking off our expenses. This is an
amazing amount. We thank the whole school
community for getting behind this event.
Our fete meeting was held last night, followed by a
P&C meeting. The fete is fast approaching on the
22nd of October. It takes so much organising. If you
are available we would really appreciate any spare
time you can give to assist in the planning of this
Students can look here and make a list of books
borrowed and read since September 2015.
These can be added to their PRC Reading
Record.
