We would not be where we are
today without all our volunteers, the unsung heroes who
grease and keep the wheels of
LiR running smoothly with a
minimum of squeaks and groans.
There is always room for more
dedicated members to volunteer
(at whatever level you feel com-

we maintain our equilibrium,

I am looking forward to this

to meeting as many of you as
possible.
Wow! What a Find! By Janet Stangvik
D
id you ever walk into somewhere and immediately feel
at home? That was my experience
when I first attended a Friday
session of Learning in Retirement.
The presentation was engaging
and the people were interested
and interesting. I decided then and
there to join. I had just moved to
Nelson and retired from 17 years of
Ministry in Napa Valley, California.
I wanted to be near my grandchil-
dren. It was time to make the move.
It is said, that you can’t cross a
chasm in two small steps. It takes a
leap. After taking the leap, I started
looking for a community. The move,
plus retirement, plus a new country
and all the changes that occur can
be overwhelming but meeting so
many welcoming people at the
Friday sessions and hearing interesting presentations made it an adventure. I enrolled in the Storytelling
and Beyond War class offered by LIR
and the class on The Doukhobors
offered by Selkirk College. Both
classes were stimulating and informative. I met other lifelong learners
and came to appreciate the uniqueness of Nelson.
I am so thankful to those who
have had the vision and dedication
to bring LIR to Nelson and who
work to keep it going. It enriches
our lives.
Nelson’s Learning in Retirement offers our 50+ community the opportunity to explore old and new interests in a relaxed and
stimulating learning environment. LiR members work in partnership with Community Education and Workplace Training at Selkirk
College (Nelson) to develop and provide a diverse program of speakers, courses and other activities for its members

In ’69 from the East she fled,
“I’m going out West” was all she said
After 35 years as a Kootenay Kid,
moving here was the best thing I did!
A part-time student since ’82,
lifelong learning I like to do.
After my partner of 28 years died suddenly seven
years ago, I realized that I knew no one my own age.
A friend persuaded me to attend the 2010 LiR AGM,
a jumping, lively, and humourous affair. I was hooked,
becoming part of the Program Committee and its
chair for the past two years. The rest is . . .
Grace Devaux, Communications Committee, [email protected]
John Galm, Finance Committee, [email protected]
I grew up in Alberta and moved to the
Kootenays in 1979. I have been an enthusiastic
educator and advocate of life long learning. I
have so much fun in my retirement — becoming
a writer, a painter and a life learner in this
vibrant LiR community.
This is my second year serving as a member of
the Board. I have led several music classes in LiR
- Opera, Hand Drumming, World Music and this
term I will lead a Middle Eastern Music Program.
Also, I have led a couple of storytelling sessions.
Pat Gibson, Membership Committee, [email protected]
Ann Irving, Program Committee, [email protected]
I have lived, worked, and raised my family in
the Nelson region. I like to utilize my knowledge
of nursing, the outdoors, and the Nelson
community to contribute to the growth and
success of LiR. I, enjoy learning and I want to
represent the interests of my peers.
I graduated from Mt Sentinel School in 1958
then taught in Langley for 27 years. Ten years
ago I returned to Nelson. Actively participating
in LIR has enabled me to get truly integrated in
this community.
Johanna Sandkuhl, Social Committee, [email protected]
Christine Schmidt, Selkirk Liaison, [email protected]
Being new to Nelson, from Calgary in 2012, I
sought out groups in which I might be involved.
LiR was welcoming, stimulating and provided
ample opportunity to meet interesting people.
On the Board I can support further the same
qualities I had found so fitting to my needs.
I am attracted to opportunities to engage with
diverse and dynamic people. Being the Community Education Coordinator at Silver King
Campus has given me a delicious opportunity
to work with LiR and meet great people with
fantastic history and leadership.
Janet Stangvik, Social Committee, [email protected]
Doug Sutherland, Finance and Communications Committees,
Before moving to Nelson, I was actively involved
as senior minister at the Napa Valley Center for
Spiritual Living in California. I also had my own
business. I have experience in teaching, fundraising and financial management plus the love
of building a thriving community.
Being on the board is a major learning experience. With no such previous experience, it was a
steep but fun learning curve. The enthusiasm of
members at presentations and their involvement
in the programs is enjoyable and rewarding.

LIR is always on my mind, keeping me alert,
curious and engaged in our community and
meeting many new, interesting and fun friends.

in many directions. When her children were young, she taught prenatal
classes while working on the maternity unit of KLH. As they got older she
became aware of the need for sexual health education and resources. She
began working with Options for Sexual Health (“Opt”, formally known
as Planned Parenthood) in local clinics. This expanded into opening a
student-run clinic on the Castlegar campus of Selkirk College and, in
her role as a nursing instructor, supporting and supervising the students
who run the clinic. Last year she completed the classroom work for the
Opt Sexual Health Educator certificate program which covers sexual
health education through the lifespan. She believes it is a human right
to have accurate, non-judgmental sexual health education and to enjoy a
satisfying sexual life.

Facilitators: Diane Watts and Raj Downe
$3 plus tax – 1 session (followed by off campus meetings every 3rd
Monday of the month)
Enrollment: Min 6 / Max 12
Location: SKC Room 16
The two facilitators will get the group up and

wishes.
Painting with Watercolors
Wednesday, Sept. 30 – Nov. 4, 10:30 – Noon
Instructor: Norm Watts
$18 plus tax - 6 sessions
Enrollment: Min 6 / Max 20
Location: KSA Room 311
We will review and continue to build on our
watercolour painting techniques with a focus
on controlling water in ‘wet on dry’ and ‘wet
on wet’ washes as well as the application of
paint on paper to produce interesting textures
and effects. To further develop compositional
skills we will use sketching techniques to
learn the principles and elements of design
in painting and how to apply these ideas in a
composition
Both facilitators have been involved in book
clubs over the years and are currently members
of other book clubs. Diane Watts was a
teacher for many years and Raj Downe was an
accountant and administrator in the health care system.
Change your Perception: Change your Life

Instructor: Bo Pearce
$18 plus tax – 6 sessions
Enrollment: Min 6 / Max 20
Location: SKC Room Room 118
By changing our perception, we gain freedom from old patterns and self
defeating habits like anxiety, fear and depression. Learn how to release
from a conditioned mind and move into a natural state of being. This is
a 6 week course in which we will learn the difference between mind and
brain, discuss quantum physics, and hopefully, come to understand what
science and spirituality are showing us about our own true nature.
Norm Watts worked as a machine-tool maker in England, Toronto and
Vancouver and on various construction sites around B.C. He graduated
from UBC with a degree in Fine Arts and finished his career teaching
Industrial Arts courses in School District #8, Kootenay Lake. Since
retirement he has spent some of his time de mystifying the art of
watercolour painting
Bo Pearce has taught computer skills for over 40 years. She recently
used a program in Dynamic Neural Retraining to heal herself from a
hypersensitivity to electromagnetic fields. Through neural retraining,
Bo learned valuable tools to cure many physical, mental, and emotional
issues. `This has been so liberating, I have to share it`, she says.
Music of the Middle East
Sex and Aging
Fridays, Sept. 25 - Oct. 9, 1:00 – 2:30pm
Instructor: Judith Fearing
$9 plus tax – 3 sessions
Enrollment: Min 6 / Max 20
Location: SKC Room 16
Exploration of topics will be through stories, videos, anonymous
questions and some discussion for those who wish to share. Participation
can take the form of discussion or active listening.
Session 1: Am I normal? Aging and sexual health – what is it all about
and how can we approach it with confidence, understanding
and optimism. Many adults did not have the opportunity to
learn the basics of sexual health. It was not discussed and
there were no opportunities to ask questions. Now is your
chance to fill in those gaps in understanding or questions that
have gone unanswered.
Session 2 : Navigating the years. How to stay healthy and happy.
Communication and the right to be sexually active in
whatever form that takes. Consent and what that looks like.
Session 3: To be announced – whatever is not covered in the previous
sessions and whatever questions need answering.

to share their insights into writing and answer our questions about the art
and discipline of creativity. We hope at the end of this bonding exercise, you
will form your own LIR writing group to carry on writing.
The LiR Writer’s Group was formed after a writing course led by Margaret
Hornby five years ago. In January 2011 we started the LiR Writers Group
which has survived the vicissitudes of time, struggles, changes and
challenges of maintaining a viable non-judgmental writing group. The
knowledge we gained will be shared. Bob Abrahams has been our faithful
communicator linking the group over the past 4½ years.

The Ymir Hotel or LIR’s trip to the Land of Oz!
By MarilynThurrott
his past spring, I signed up for the Ymir Hotel field trip, curious
after hearing about the new/old hotel, the owner – Hans Wilking
(aka ‘The Wizard’), the music, the art! Carpooling from Nelson we
met at the Rail Trail and walked the several easy kilometers to the
Ymir Hotel, built in 1896.
T
Entering the big three storey wooden building through a nondescript pub door, we found ourselves in a large retro lounge. We
quickly ordered drinks and looked around. Every inch of wall space
was occupied with the Wizard’s art collection, including famous and
not so famous painters and carvers. - let’s just say you have to see
it! The lounge holds a fraction of the collection - there was much
more upstairs!
Then there was the music. On stage were the musicians, all of them
our age. In fact, everyone in the pub/lounge was `our` age. There
was an array of instruments, a piano, a cello, a saxophone, a violin,
a banjo, a set of drums, a guitar. Apparently, anyone who would like
to is welcome to make music!
The musicians on stage introduced themselves. Several were from
Nelson and had played together before. I had heard about the
`bluegrass` and `country` music at the `Ole Ymir Hotel`, and yes,
they could play all that; but they mostly played `our` music, ie
James Taylor, Gordon Lightfoot, Ian & Sylvia, Joni Mitchell. And we
sang along, astonished we could remember all the words. And our
waitress, when the mood struck, would put down her tray of drinks,
climb on stage with the band and belt out a Janis Joplin number!
We had so much fun we didn’t want to leave and discussed renting
a room or a suite upstairs and coming down for breakfast! But the
Wizard was wise and called the evening to a close at the reasonable
hour of 9:00 o`clock. We left happily discussing the possibility of
renting a bus every Friday to bring us to the magical `Land of Oz`!
Rocks . . . Rocks and more Rocks!
By Peter Bartl
esley Anderton has a way of making rocks come alive. About
15 LiR members had a wonderful time following Lesley thru
500,000,000 years along the North Shore to Long Beach, to Coffee
Creek and the edge of the old North American continent.
L
A short hike took us down to the Fletcher Falls and along old dikes,
Gneiss and Granite. We picnicked on the beach in Kaslo by the Maze,
created from thousands of rocks and pebbles which had come down
the Kaslo River from all over the Selkirks. We retraced that journey
up the valley of the Kaslo River and scrambled up to an old mineshaft where minerals now form stalagmites. Then we went on over
ancient ocean floors and along shale formations bent over backwards. Our tour ended by the big orange boulder at Rossiter Creek.
Thank you Lesley for a most enlightening view of our Kootenays.
Communications Committee Needs YOUR HELP!
Gloria, Phyllis, Doug and Grace are extremely grateful to have
Laura Duncan join our committee to help design the LiR Journal. As
a retirement group someone is always off on holidays so we are in real
need of adding more people to our committee. To writers out there,
this is a wonderful opportunity to practice. We are always looking
LiR Journal
for short articles, photos and anyone who will enjoy being part
of this LiR committee. Every little bit helps! Please contact Grace
Devaux at our email site [email protected].
Hope to hear from you soon!

The secret of 50 years of marriage?
Through all the ups and downs, we never lost our love for
each other. We broke up once, and in our hippie days went
through a period of “open” marriage. Eventually we realized we were in for the long haul. What we discovered is that you must allow for each
other’s needs, accept each other’s individuality, respect
and honour each other. It’s day-by-day, really. We’re
working partners in this life. When we fight (and we do fight occasionally: we’re
suspicious of couples who don’t), we make up. We clear
the air. We stay together. Membership fee $16.80 ($15 + tax)

“This is a story about imprisonemt—based only on
ancestry—and resettlement. It is the very portal
through which we view the unknown aspects of three
important cultural icons. Cole skillfully sets her tale
within the rich complexities of the Japanese American
and Japanese Canadian landscapes.”
— Dr. Rita Takahashi
Professor, San Francisco State University
“Sideways: Memoir of a Misfit acquaints us with what
is uncomfortable in history, how people suffer and find
resilience. This is a book full of fascinating personal insights.”
