HIGHER
EDUCATION
PROSPECTUS
2016/17
Welcome to
Bridgwater
College
Contents
We recognise that making a choice about a higher education course and finding the best
place to study can be a challenge. We hope that the information in this prospectus will help
you make an informed choice and that the College can offer you the opportunity and course
you are looking for.
An increasing number of students are attracted by Foundation Degrees, Higher National
qualifications and professional programmes. These qualifications aim to help students enter
their chosen career at a higher level or progress within their existing employment. We
also have partnerships with universities which make it possible for students to top-up their
qualification to Degree level in a number of disciplines.
We believe that choosing Bridgwater College represents an excellent choice. As an award
winning college with strong links with industry, a wide range of courses and an outstanding
reputation for student achievement, we have much to offer people of all ages and
backgrounds.
Our courses are equally suitable for young people leaving school in Year 13, employees
hoping to progress their careers or enhance existing abilities, mature students considering
re-training in order to return to work and people who, perhaps through redundancy or
relocation, are seeking a new opportunity in life.

Why
Bridgwater
College?
Bridgwater
and the
surrounding
area
Bridgwater College offers Degree-level courses in conjunction with some of the UK’s
leading universities, which means you don’t have to leave home to study for a Degree. We
work with top universities to offer their Foundation Degrees and, in many cases, Honours
Degree Top-ups. Our university partners ensure that the content and the quality of the
tuition you receive at the College is consistent with the content and quality that is offered
at the universities themselves. The Degrees are then awarded by the individual universities.
There are many benefits associated with studying a higher education course with us:
With the Quantock Hills and the surrounding Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty to one
side, and miles of rugged coastline to the other, there are numerous attractions nearby,
including the historic cities of Bath and Wells, the mystical town of Glastonbury and a
multitude of charming, country villages. Despite its rural location, major cities such as Bristol,
Exeter, London, Birmingham, Oxford and Cardiff are within easy commuting distance.
The College itself is situated just a ten minute walk from the main railway station and two
miles from the M5, placing it at the very heart of the UK’s transport system. The shops and
restaurants of county town Taunton are also only a short distance away.
You’ll find a wide variety of activities and sport in Bridgwater, including rugby, football, netball,
hockey, tennis and cycling clubs, as well as traditional skittle teams based in many local pubs.
There is a wide choice of places to eat out, both in the town and within the surrounding
area, and of course Bridgwater is also home to the famous Guy Fawkes Carnival, the largest
illuminated carnival in the world, which attracts more than 130,000 visitors annually.
We believe that Bridgwater offers a familiar, safe and secure environment in which to live and
study, and that our students benefit enormously from their time here.

UNIVERSITY COURSES BUT NOT UNIVERSITY PRICES
We generally do not charge full fees on any of our higher education courses; we have
negotiated with our university partners to charge lower fees than they will be charging. As
an example, a university may charge up to £9,000 a year and we may charge from £7,000,
which is more than a 20% saving for you! And while you need to pay to study higher
education there are a number of loans and grants available to assist you. Money needn’t be
a barrier to your future education.

STRONG PARTNERSHIPS WITH PRESTIGIOUS UNIVERSITIES
We have strong links with the following partner universities: Oxford Brookes, Plymouth
University, University of the West of England. This allows us to give many of our students
a clear progression route to top-up their College qualification to Honours Degree level, in
most cases within one year, and in some cases two years at Bridgwater College. Working
alongside prestigious universities reinforces our excellent reputation both nationally and
regionally. Our examination and course results consistently place us among the best of all
education and training providers in the South West.

SUPPORTIVE ENVIRONMENT
We aim to provide a high level of support to all students at the College, including those with
disabilities or additional learning needs. Each student is allocated a tutor and will receive
regular tutorials or one-to-one meetings, if required. Our award-winning Student Support
and Additional Learning Support teams are also available for all our students to access if they
need to do so. We want you to achieve your goals, so if you require one-to-one support in
the classroom, extra exam time or sessions in our study skills workshop, we will ensure these
are in place to help you.
SMALL CLASS SIZES AND HIGH QUALITY TEACHING
An advantage of studying in a college environment is the fact that class sizes are significantly
reduced, meaning that students receive a high level of academic and personal support from
lecturers and personal tutors, many of whom have postgraduate qualifications and extensive
teaching and industry experience.
MODERN STATE-OF-THE-ART FACILITIES
We always strive for our facilities to be of the best quality. We want our students to learn in
state-of-the-art learning environments. Significant and ongoing investment in facilities helps
us to attract new students as well as encouraging our current students to progress internally.
Many of our facilities are also run as commercial ventures, offering superb work-based
learning opportunities and real hands-on experience to our students.
Higher Education
events
The move into higher education is a potentially life-changing experience, and it is important
for you to make an informed choice. We recommend that prospective students visit
a number of institutions before selecting a place to study, and we are always happy to
welcome visitors to the College whether formally or informally.
During the coming year we have planned a number of open events so that prospective
students can come and see what we have to offer. This will give you the opportunity to
meet teaching staff, view our facilities, experience the atmosphere and to talk with current
students.
To find out more please call a member of our Information and Guidance team on

Quality

• The quality of the information produced by the provider
about its provision meets UK expectations
• The enhancement of student learning opportunities at the
provider meets UK expectations.
“We are very pleased with the outcome of our HER, particularly
with the emphasis placed on our employer engagement activities
and the employability of our graduates. A significant amount of
work by staff and students at the College has contributed to this
and is reflective of the high academic standards and experience
our higher education students receive.”
Jenny Ashworth
DIRECTOR OF ACADEMIC PARTNERSHIPS AND MARKETING.
HIGHER EDUCATION REVIEW (HER)
All recipients, subscribers and providers of higher education, and those who have access to
funding from the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE), are monitored by
the Quality Assurance Agency (QAA).
The QAA perform Higher Education
Reviews (HER) as a review method to
inform students and the wider public
whether providers of higher education,
including colleges and universities, meet the
expectations of the higher education sector
for:
• The setting and/or maintenance of
academic standards
• The provision of learning opportunities
• The provision of information
• The enhancement of the quality of
students’ learning opportunities.
Students are at the heart of the HER. They
are full members of QAA’s peer review
teams, and there are also opportunities
for students to take part in the review by
contributing a student submission, meeting
the review team, and working with their
providers in response to review outcomes.
The College underwent its HER in April
2014 and was successful in retaining its
Quality Assurance mark. The full report
can be found on the QAA website or
alternatively the Bridgwater College
website www.bridgwater.ac.uk. During the
HER the QAA review team identified the
following features of good practice:
• The integrated approach to transition
from entry to higher education, through
to further study and employment
• The embedding of employability into the
curriculum
• Extensive engagement with employers,
including work-based learning
• The clear and comprehensive
information available to prospective
students on employment opportunities
relevant to their programmes.
Judgements were also made about
standards and quality to ensure that:
• The maintenance of the threshold
academic standards of awards offered
on behalf of Degree-awarding bodies
and/or other awarding organisations
meets UK expectations
• The quality of student learning
opportunities at the provider meets UK
expectations

ACCOMODATION
The College has accommodation for both weekday-catered
(with a meal card) and fully self-catered HE students at the
College’s Cannington Centre. Accommodation is allocated on
a priority basis, mostly related to distance from home although
other factors are taken into consideration. The various types of
accommodation available through the College are listed below.
HALLS OF RESIDENCE
Dartmoor Hall (completed in January 2014) is a modern,
purpose-built building offering spacious en-suite rooms with
queen size beds. All rooms are equipped with a fridge, kettle,
study desk and IT and TV points. The lodge is spread over two
floors with two large and spacious student common rooms with
full self-catering kitchen areas, soft seating and bean bags as well
as a dining table and chairs. There is also a communal flat screen
TV and general utilities.
The other smaller lodges available for HE students include
Dunkery, Collard and Porlock Lodges. These lodges include full
kitchen facilities, flat screen TV and a communal bathroom. All
rooms have a desk area with a lamp for study. Communal areas
have soft seating with the exception of Porlock Lodge, where the
TV is situated in the kitchen with a bar area for seating.
card to use in the College restaurants during the week; weekends
are self-catered at present. There is an on-site launderette and a
large central student common room which hosts regular activities
and has a range of facilities, including a pool table, table tennis
table and a student bar. Support for students is provided by the
Student Liaison Team who are on site seven days a week.
Overall, there is a wide range of accommodation options, at
various price levels. For further information regarding on-campus
accommodation, go to the Bridgwater College website
(www.bridgwater.ac.uk) and look at the accommodation section
where full details on fees and accommodation options can be
found.
The application process begins when you complete an expression
of interest form for accommodation online. You will then be
contacted by the Student Liaison Team to pay a deposit to
secure your place in accommodation. Please note: if you are
allocated a place in residence, you will receive notification of the
accommodation we have booked for you well before the start of
your course.
HOME STAY (INTERNATIONAL)
We can arrange hosted accommodation of a high standard in
regularly inspected homes near the College. Home stay typically
includes bed, breakfast and evening meal during the week plus
laundry facilities. The cost usually covers heating and household
bills. Home stay fees should be paid directly to Student Support.
You will also need to pay a returnable deposit and one month’s
rent in advance.
HOUSE/FLAT SHARING
The Student Support Office holds details of private houses and
flats available for rent by students. These are self-catering facilities
where you will pay rent, heating, lighting and other running costs
directly to the owner. You should either be given a receipt or the
owner should enter your payments in a rent book. You may be
asked for a deposit which will be returned to you at the end of
your stay, provided all bills have been paid and there has been no
damage to the property.
Students choosing the catered option are provided with a meal

Information
& Guidance
Our Information and Guidance team is your
first point of contact for information and
advice about the many courses on offer.
Their desk is staffed during office hours
for 50 weeks of the year, and until 7pm
for the first three weeks of September. To
speak with a member of the Information
and Guidance team call 01278 441234;
alternatively chat with them live via our
website www.bridgwater.ac.uk
The team has been trained to provide
impartial information, advice and guidance
and is a first point of contact for general
information and advice relating to many
aspects of your application or future career
opportunities. These are one-to-one
discussions that can be conducted faceto-face, over the telephone or via email at
[email protected]
A dedicated member of the Information
and Guidance team processes all HE
applications and can help, advise and
support applicants through the process.
We have established direct IT links with
our partner universities to ensure speed in
tracking applications, and pride ourselves
on the fact that every applicant is viewed
and treated as a person and not as an
administrative process.
Students applying for full-time courses
through UCAS will be notified of the
decision via the UCAS system. Applicants
wishing to study a higher education
qualification part-time should complete
the College application form on page 121.
You may be contacted for an interview but
in all part-time cases the Information and
Guidance staff will communicate the offer.
ADVICE AND GUIDANCE
A key advantage of having personal,
dedicated support at the earliest stage
of your application is to gain reassurance
that you are making a well-informed
decision. This is critical when you consider
that choosing the right university level
qualification can have a huge impact on
your future. Current statistical evidence
confirms that holding university level
educational qualifications ensures more
choice and better career opportunities.
Support and guidance continues once you
have enrolled and started your course via
the tutorial process.

FULL-TIME
For full-time courses you will need to apply
online through UCAS (Universities and
Colleges Admissions Service) via
www.ucas.com
When you have chosen your course, follow
the procedures on-screen and complete
and submit your form (please note that the
application form that appears in this booklet
is for part-time courses only). For 2016 entry
you can submit your application form to
UCAS between 1 September 2015 and 15
January 2016; although you can also apply
after this date, there is the possibility that
your chosen course may be full. The cost of
applying through UCAS for a 2016 start will
be £23 unless you are applying to only one
institution (e.g. Bridgwater College) when
you will pay a reduced fee of £12 (according
to UCAS at time of print).
From the end of February 2016 UCAS Extra
is a live system for any applicants who have
not been accepted by any of their choices
or who have rejected all their offers. UCAS
Extra allows you to make additional choices
one at a time for courses that still have
spaces.
Any eligible applicants not in receipt of
an offer, or making their first application
after 30 June 2016, will be sent a Clearing
Passport. Lists of courses with vacancies
will appear on www.ucas.com and in
national newspapers and if any of these are
of interest to you, you should contact the
university or college directly to ask if they
will accept you. It is a good idea to do this
yourself because the admissions tutor will
want to speak to you personally. UCAS will
contact you directly with the decision about
your application.

application form can also be downloaded
from our website at
www.bridgwater.ac.uk or obtained from
the Information and Guidance team by
calling 01278 441234; alternatively email
[email protected]
Enrolment on some courses is subject to
a successful interview, and this will provide
you with another opportunity to meet
the tutors, see the College facilities and
obtain any support or information, including
financial information, that you might need.
You can then apply to any funding sources
open to you.
If an interview is not required, we would
nevertheless recommend that you visit
the College at some point, if you have not
already done so.
Please note that for Early Years
programmes a successful interview and
a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS)
check, previously known as Criminal Record
Bureau (CRB) clearance, is mandatory.
Once we receive your application we will
contact you to arrange an interview.
Whichever institution you choose as your
firm or insurance choice, you should apply
to Student Finance England for tuition fee
and maintenance support.
DEFERRED ENTRY
Please indicate your preference to defer on
your application by completing the relevant
box on your UCAS form. For some students
this could be an ideal opportunity to pursue
work experience relating to their course.
Please be aware you will still have to meet
the 2016 UCAS deadlines.

ANIMAL
CONSERVATION
Giving the future a helping hand
ANIMAL CONSERVATION
FOUNDATION DEGREE
You will explore the possible conflict
between man and animals through areas
such as ecotourism, cultural differences and
environmental management strategies. You
will be expected to have an interest in specific
animal populations and will be encouraged to
undertake vocational training alongside focused
academic study.
COURSE STRUCTURE & CONTENT
Conservation is the practice of protecting
endangered plant and wild animal species and their
habitats. It also includes the study of current and
emerging issues, both locally and globally. Fewer
natural habitat areas remain each year, which is mainly
due to destruction, fragmentation or degradation of
habitat. Awareness and research into environmental
issues that affect animal diversity should therefore
be at the forefront of our minds and form the
basis within many conservation organisations.

I have learnt so much during my time at College. I had
an unusual route into education, I was home schooled
right up to my entry into College. The College
environment was poles apart to what I had been used
to. My dyslexia wasn’t formally diagnosed until I came
to the College, then I was supplied with an LSA who I
met with to discuss my written work, as I find it easier to
talk it through rather than write straight away. This has
been instrumental to my success. I never believed I was
capable of doing a degree, the College staff have all been
incredibly supportive and encouraging and gave me the
self-confidence or belief to do it!

My favourite aspects of College have been the small class
sizes and the bonds I have made throughout the course.
Everyone is particularly close knit which has made the
learning process far more enjoyable. During my time at
College I was lucky enough to be given the opportunity to
work on a website for an archaeologist of the Great War at
Bristol University. I then presented my work to the College’s
Senior Management Team; this has been a major confidence
boost for me as well as having been an extremely
worthwhile experience.

Finance
There are a number of loans and grants available to assist
students in 2016/17. Applications may be made online at www.
direct.gov.uk from Spring 2016. You will need to have a bank
account as grants and maintenance loans are paid directly into
your account by the Student Loans Company Ltd. You will be
asked to provide evidence of any claims you make.
TUITION FEE LOANS FOR UK / EU STUDENTS
Full-time UK/EU students may defer payment of tuition fees by
applying for a tuition fee loan which is available to all students
regardless of income, and will generally cover the full fee costs for
each year of study (although this may not be the case with certain
private universities and colleges). You will need to apply for a loan
each year in advance of the next year of entry.
MAINTENANCE LOAN
Full-time students can apply for a Maintenance Loan to cover
living costs and general out-of-pocket expenses. For 2015 the
loan amount for students living independently outside of London
is £5,740 per annum, and for students living at home £4,565.
Loan repayments will commence in the April which falls three
years after the start of your course, even if you are still studying.
However, you will only start repaying once your gross income
reaches £21,000 per annum.
MEANS-TESTED GRANT
A grant of up to £3,387 per year is available for those with a
parental or personal income of £25,000 and under, with a partial
grant available to those with a parental or personal income of
between £25,001 and £42,620. Students wishing to apply for
grants will need to contact the Student Loans Company at www.
direct.gov.uk/studentfinance
PART-TIME STUDENTS
From September 2015 onwards new part-time students can
apply for a tuition fee loan of up to £6,750 to help cover tuition
costs. To be eligible for a tuition fee loan, this must be the first
time you’re studying on a higher education course and to qualify
you must complete a minimum of 25% of the equivalent full-time
course load per year. Unfortunately there are currently no plans
to introduce maintenance grants or maintenance loans for parttime students.
LOAN REPAYMENTS
Repayments will be deducted automatically from your pay. The
amount you owe will increase each year with interest, which will
be applied at the rate of inflation plus three per cent while you
study. Please note figures are based on 2015/16, unless otherwise
stated.
Please note - If you are progressing to study at Plymouth
University after successfully completing a course at the College,
the fees for the course you are progressing to will be different
from your College course fees. Please check with the University
