A special thank you to our sponsors: Melwood Springs Water, Jordan
Collins Fitness, Fat Boys Farmer's Market and Big Dog Running Company.
About the Folds of Honor Foundation
The Folds of Honor Foundation was founded in 2007 by Major
Dan Rooney, a former F-16 pilot, golf course owner, PGA
Professional and USGA member. A Major in the Air National
Guard and a decorated military aviator, Rooney has served
three combat tours in Iraq. After returning from his second tour,
Major Rooney witnessed a profound situation that drove him to create the Folds of Honor
Foundation. Through scholarships and other assistance, this foundation gives back to the spouses
and children of soldiers killed or disabled in service to our country. They provide healing, hope
and an opportunity for dreams to be realized...with the support of people like you.
From the General Manager
Ladies andGentlemen:
As the summer is coming to an end, I hope you and your family enjoyed this
wonderful time of the year. The most rewarding aspects of my position continue to be
watching your children grow older, having new family members joining and seeing
groups of friends around the club. The CCC staff is 100% focused on providing you
and your family with the absolute finest personalized service and creating memories
that will last a lifetime.
Holiday season is just around the corner. Whether you are planning an event or know
someone who is looking for a venue for an event, we can certainly meet all of your
needs. We have rooms to accommodate from 2 -700 people and Chef will personalize
a menu just for you! In addition, we will accept MasterCard or VISA for all banquets.
The revenue generated from private events is crucial to the club meeting its financial
budget. Please pass the word as we still have some dates available for December
functions.
In closing, I just wanted to thank you all for your continued support in using the
facilities of the CCC. This is the first time in several years that the Trophy Room and
Mixed Grill have continually exceeded their monthly budget. Usage has been
consistent and we greatly appreciate you making us your choice for dining. In the near
future Chef will be preparing a new menu bringing back past favorites and adding
many new features. The House Committee is working diligently to bring about
exciting changes in the Trophy Room. Be on the lookout for upcoming e-mails
announcing the changes.
Please know that our entire staff is here to serve you. We welcome any and all
feedback. It is through member suggestions we are able to ensure you receive the
level of service and the quality of events you expect.
Sincerely,
Carol Edell, CCM

Golf News
Words from William,
As you know, we aerified the greens and the tees in July. I thought this might be a
good time to enlighten you on our process of aerification in case you are not familiar
with it. This year we are only aerifying the greens one time to lessen disruption to
the golf course and your playing conditions. Aerification is the least disruptive
cultivation practice available to greens. It accomplishes the same thing a farmer
does by plowing his field and discing the soil.
Core aerification uses a hollow tine to pull a plug or core out of the ground. Core
aerifying is done for three main reasons: it relieves soil compaction, creates air
spaces in the root zone and removes thatch by diluting it. Our greens are constructed
to USGA specifications and retain a certain amount of air spaces, but can become
“sealed off” and most definiately build a thatch layer. Along with regular light
verticutting and top dressing, aerification is the most effective way to remove thatch.
After aerifying with 5/8 inch tines, the plugs are removed and the holes, spaced
slightly more than an inch apart, are filled with the same sand from which the greens
are constructed. Once the sand settles into the holes and the turf grows throught it,
the greens are back to normal.
This process is not as simple as it sounds. The sand requires constant brushing to
stay in place and dulls the greens mower blades with each mowing. The mowing,
rolling, and brushing is done in stages over a two week period until we are back
mowing at our normal height of cut. Even though it can be a tedious process, the
inconvenience is worth the reward. In this case, the reward is healthy greens.
Thank you,
William Smith
Certified Golf Course Superintendent

Tennis Talk
Where did the summer go? A few weeks of tennis camps,
league matches and a lot of rain has brought us to the end of a
short summer. Baseball was still playing well into July, August
brings the start of school, but several exciting tennis events for
the CCC Tennis Players.
Junior
Club Championship starts August 12 and runs to August 18
when we have the awards party. Evert Cup follows on the
weekend of August 23 - 25. CCC will be the host this year.
USTA League starts back up on September 7 and the Mercedes
Round Robin is September 13. It will be a busy couple of
months.
Some of our junior players played well in June. Jake Courville,
Jack Schondelmayer, Sackett Carr, Mary Caroline Ellis,
Marianna Branch, Mary Weston Courville, Lily Patton and
Gracie Hemmings qualified for the State Qualifying
Tournament, the largest junior tournament of the year. Gracie,
Mary Weston and Lily went on to Southerns. All girls played
well. Mary Weston (pictured right) won her back draw. Georgia
Clay came right after with several CCC players doing well. Jack
Schondelmayer won the 10s and Sackett Carr reached the
finals. Both boys are pictured right with CCC Tennis Pro Diego
Motivar. Gracie won the 12s doubles title with her partner from
Savannah (pictured right). Mary Weston came in fourth place in
the singles and Gracie finished sixth. Congratulations for all the
achievements this summer.
Not to jinx our teams, but our combo teams are doing well this
summer. A couple of them may even win the local league.
Everytime I say which teams are doing well we go down the
drain, so for the time being, it’s a secret. CCC had nine teams
playing this summer. Thanks for playing and a special thanks to
the captains!
