The 4th Annual Sustainable Ballard Festival:
Bigger and Livelier than Ever!
W
hen you attend the Sustainable Ballard Festival this fall you’ll find that there’s
a lot to learn from your neighbors! Get a sneak preview in this Festival Guide,
and be sure to mark your calendar for September 29th and 30th. Our annual homegrown, hands-on festival will offer you lots of resources and activities to make it
easier to live more sustainably. Join local non-profits, sustainable businesses and
the Ballard community for this engaging, enjoyable and educational experience. It’s
all FREE!
Now entering its 5th year, Sustainable Ballard continues to grow and inspire
neighboring communities (check out scallops.sustainableballard.org!). With Sustainable Ballard’s membership now over 1,000, it’s easy to see that energy independence
and community self-reliance do not mean “going it alone.” At the Sustainable Ballard
Festival you’ll find workshops, discussions, creative activities, and plenty of information. Demos and talks will be given by locals, and art, music, dance and theater will
all be part of the mix. While the mood is festive, the message is a serious one – it’s all
aimed at engaging you, our neighbors, to discover new possibilities and deepen your
commitment to living more lightly on the Earth. The choices we make daily can affect
global climate change and oil dependency. Please join us! ■
We love banking almost

There’s Something for Everyone at the Fest!
Eat Local Now
Community Construction
1,500 miles is the average distance that food
items in a typical American meal travel to
your table. With peak oil and climate change
as motivation, there are plenty of reasons
to Eat Local Now! For a donation you can
get one of the very trendy Eat Local Now Tshirts, and spread the word about local eating.
Highlights include:
• Cooking, fermentation and canning demos, hosted
by Chefs Collaborative and the Sustainable
Ballard Food, Health, Medicine Guild
• 100 Mile Diet display showing the location of
organic and family farms in Washington state
• Fresh fruit and produce samples
• Dehydrating display
• 100 Mile Thanksgiving program
Here’s where you’ll find info about green roofs,
solar panels, eco-insulation, sustainable and
reclaimed building materials, Energy Star
appliances, home heating alternatives and more.
• Real, live chickens! We’ll show you what you need
to keep them happy and laying eggs.
Climate Change Corner
The Climate Change Corner will contain
dramatic pictures of the effects of global
warming on Washington State. Meant
to convince people that warming is not a
problem far away or 10 years in the future,
this tent’s walls will offer evidence that action
is needed now. Additional information:
• Solutions and guidance on what individuals need
to do now
• A spectrum of necessary actions to get us to a
healthier climate, presented in graph form by
Climate Solutions.
• Specific suggestions from various groups like the
Climate Project, Solar Washington and the Greater
Seattle Climate Dialogues, as well as Sustainable
Ballard’s own home energy volunteers.
Demos by local chefs
draw a crowd at the Festival
• Help create a kiosk of reclaimed and recycled
materials with a green roof!
• Come see a straw bale building demonstration by
NW EcoBuilding Guild
• Learn how 14th Ave NW is building community
and creating a safe, livable and sustainable street
• Find out how to install your own water catchment
system.
Green Gardening
In this area you can find out about native
plants, organic gardening, home composting,
companion planting, saving water and much
more. Highlights include:
• Native, drought-tolerant, and edible plant displays
• Fruit tree pruning and information
• Composting demos and free worms!
• Cider-pressing
• Rain barrel display
Swap-o-Rama-Rama
Festival-goers will be guided in making new
fashions by recombining parts of donated
clothes along with fabric “trash” such as coffee
bags and rice bags. Sewing machines and
sergers will be provided, and experienced
sewers will be on hand to help you make your
vision a reality.
• A silkscreening station will be set up outside so
that you can adorn your garment with the festival
logo or other designs.
• Displays will show other eco-fiber arts ideas.
• Pre-made “Swap” clothing will be hung and
modeled for inspiration!

sustainable awareness, and fun things for
kids of all ages to make with sustainable and
recycled materials. Pitch in and help kids with
their own unique creation. Directed activities
include:
• Pinecone bird feeders
• Pinwheels
• Zucchini cars
Kids Corner
Here’s an area for older kids to get more
involved with sustainability issues and have
fun, too. Some highlights:
• Kid Picks—On Sunday, visit PCC’s Kid Picks mobile
and find (and rate) your favorite healthy foods.
The most highly rated items will show up on PCC
shelves as Kid Picks!
• REcycled Art Station—Hosted by RE Store,
this area will be a jumble of locally reclaimed
materials with an industrial bent – wires, springs,
widgets, gadgets, odds and ends – all stuff that
might wind up in the landfill if you don’t come
along and make something out of it. Tools, staff
and stuff provided – take home what you make for
free! Come play. For kids of all ages – adults, too.
• And more!

LEND A HAND!
The Sustainable Ballard Festival runs on volunteer
energy! Contribute your skills and time to your
neighborhood festival – before, during and after, from
2 hours to 20+! To get connected, send an email to
[email protected], or call Andrea at
206-783-6963 (9am–9pm), or 206-701-7000. All
activity areas need help on Festival days, plus we’re
planning silkscreening and sign-making work parties
Sept. 15-16, no experience needed. Other opportunities too (and you can get community service hours).

Undrive to the Sustainable Ballard Festival!
Y
ou’ll find us at Ballard Commons Park and in
the Ballard Public Library, just north of downtown Ballard at NW 57th St and 22nd Ave NW.
The festival site is conveniently accessible by bus,
bicycle and foot.
Help us reduce our ecological footprint by
Undriving to the Fest. If you get there by any means
other than car, we’ll give you 2 free bus tickets,
courtesy of King County METRO. Get them at the
Information Station, and while you’re there, record
how you got to the Fest on the Big Board!
RIDING THE BUS: Metro bus routes #15, 17, 18, 44
and 75 all travel within easy walking distance of the
Fest. Check out transit.metrokc.gov for schedule
information. (It might be easier by bus than you
think; did you know you can get from Northgate to
Ballard on one bus?)
WALKING: Ballard is a great place to explore on
foot, so consider ambling on over to the Fest, even
from neighboring communities. Taking a stroll of a
mile or two (or three or four) is healthy!
BOATING: You can dock at the public 24th Street
Pier for free; no overnight moorage and use at
your own risk. After docking, walk or bike 5 blocks
north and 1 block east.
PARKING: There will be plenty of bike racks at
the Festival! Please do not lock your bike to the
lightpoles within the park. If you absolutely must
drive a car, make it a hybrid if you can, be sure to
carpool, and know that parking in the area will be
very tight. Please try to park in the commercial
areas of Ballard or in the Library lot, and if you
must park in the residential areas, be respectful of
our neighbors and do not block their driveways. At
the Information Station you can ‘fess up and still get
free bus tickets, if you consult our bus trip planning
specialists and promise to try out the route.
