The brilliant sunshine on Saturday morning, June 7, was a welcome greeting to the
day for the 22nd annual ArtsFest, held again on the beautiful grounds surrounding
the La Plata Town Hall. Morning events began at 8:00 am with Yoga on the Lawn
led by Anne Machetto. At noon, the public was welcomed to visit the 47 artists and
exhibitor tents, enjoy the sights and sounds of 13 performing groups throughout
the day, and indulge in the delicious offerings from 8 food vendors.
Our heartfelt thanks goes to Mayor Roy Hale, Town
Manager Daniel Mears, Special Events Coodinator
Colleen Wilson, and the Town of La Plata for hosting
us again this year. Our sincere appreciation also goes
to the Charles County Commissioners for proclaiming
Saturday, June 7, as "ArtsFest Day in Charles County," and
to Commissioner Vice President Reuben Collins and
Commissioner Ken Robinson for presenting us with
the County Proclamation in person during our opening
ceremonies.
Thanks to all the artists and exhibitors, to the music and dance groups that
entertained non-stop throughout the day, and to author and story teller Shirley
Perez, who read from her book Big Nose. Thanks also goes to Lorina Harris who
directed the children's art tent, and to the Southern Maryland Astronomical Society
who set up day telescopes which allowed viewing of sunspots and even solar flares!
Most of all, our deepest gratitude goes to the ArtsFest 2014 Committee: Robert
Rausch (Chair), Bill Adams, Cindy Johnson, and Diane Rausch, and to all the Board
members and community volunteers who made our event another great success
this year!
An estimated 2,500 men, women and children attended ArtsFest 2014. If you
missed ArtsFest this year, take a look at the photos on pages 3 and 4, and plan to
attend ArtsFest 2015 next year!
President’s Letter
Dear Members and Friends,
What A Really Great Day!
The weather for ArtsFest 2014 was perfect, the people were wonderful, the art and exhibits were excellent, the
performers were fantastic and the food was scrumptious. All in all it was really a great day!
ArtsFest 2014 was simply an awesome event. We had 47 artists and exhibitors, 13 performing groups and 8
food vendors providing food for the body and the soul. We had an estimated 2,500 attendees, and on a scale
from 1 to 10, we were rated an overall 9.52 by 48 of our participants. Of course there is always room for
improvement, but it would be easy to say that June 7, 2014, was our best ArtsFest ever!
A very big “Thank You!” is in order for the ArtsFest Committee, Board members and volunteer members of the
CCAA, all of the visual and performing artists, exhibitors and food vendors who participated, and the Charles
County citizens who attended. This, of course, would not have been possible without the cooperation of the
Town of La Plata and their staff, in particular Colleen Wilson, Special Events Coordinator.
As I have said before, it is the volunteers who are helping to operate and improve the CCAA. Beginning with
our “hands on” Board that has donated over 1,500 hours this past year to meetings and events, and the
Gallery Committee who selects and sets up the art displayed at Waldorf West Library and two other locations.
In addition, more volunteers from our membership are coming forward to assist us at our many events
throughout the year. It is my hope that many more will come forward to help us in the coming new fiscal year
that begins today, July 1. So those of you interested in being part of the War of 1812 Celebration in Benedict on
August 30 and 31, please stand by for further info coming soon!
There are a variety of events that you can help with over the next six months: join the Gallery Committee,
assist us with the Charles County Fair art exhibit in September, serve on the Grant Committee in October, help
us decorate and set up for the Annual Grantee and Membership Gala in November, and be part of the Holiday
Arts Faire in the Kris Kringle Christmas Market at the Charles County Fairgrounds in December. Many hands
make light work of course!

May 3 - 11, 2014, was National Tourism Week, and the
Charles County Arts Alliance was on hand at the Crain
Memorial Welcome Center in Newburg to participate
in this annual event. From May 6 - 8, CCAA President
Robert Rausch and CCAA Office Manager Judy Crawford
greeted well over 100 guests, from local residents to
those traveling long distances, but all stopping at the
Welcome Center for a rest, maps, or brochures on
Maryland's attractions.
CCAA had the opportunity to impress many newcomers
to Southern Maryland with the abundance of artsrelated activities, especially ArtsFest and the upcoming
Kris Kringle Christmas Market! Even though the
majority of the visitors were "just passing through,"
they were very interested in returning for future events.
We look forward to seeing them when they again visit
Charles County, Maryland!

archaeologist and the head of the
cultural resources section at the
Maryland State Highway Administration. She will

Commissioners Announce 2014 Waldorf Beautification
Student Poster Contest Winners
On Tuesday, June 10, 2014, the Charles County Arts Alliance was honored to participate in the County
Commissioners Award Ceremony for the winners of the 2014 Student Poster Contest for the Waldorf
Beautification Project. CCAA Past President and Board member Diane Rausch provided opening remarks, and
introduced CCAA Board member poster judges Gale Kladitis and Lorina Harris, and the other judges: Top Ladies
of Distinction representatives Garcia Buckley and Cynthia Mason-Posey, and County Government staff members
Susan Shaffer, Bob Curran and Hussein El-Sayed. This was the second year for this project and the poster contest,
and over 400 student poster entries from 17 schools were submitted by students across Charles County. The
Waldorf Beautification Project was spearheaded in 2013 by Commissioner Reuben Collins, and endorsed by all
County Commissioners. The posters portrayed the project slogan, "With Pride, We Prosper. Help Keep it Clean." In
addition to Charles County Government prizes and Top Ladies of Distinction certificates of appreciation awarded
to the 18 winners, we presented CCAA "honorary youth memberships" to these very talented young artists.

Author Reception
and Book Signing
Saturday, July 12, 11:00 am - 2:00pm
This month, BookNuts BookStore features five local authors working in a diverse range of genres:
James Mascia, whose previous teen novels include The Poe Murders and New York Jungle Zombies:
Invasion, has recently completed the fourth novel in the "High School Heroes" series. In Hero's
Burden, the powers of one of the teenage superheroes suddenly stop working. Ordinary life is
boring, and she quickly tires of her superhero friends protecting her, so she sets out to discover
the reason for her "new normal."
Life Journeys Writers Club founder Yvonne Medley's Jubi Stone: Saved by the Vine tells the story of a
young woman challenged by the generation gap between her and her parents and the temptations of
life. Yvonne has published several other books, including Prison Plumb Line and God in Wingtip Shoes.
Patricia Harrington returns to BookNuts with a piece of supernatural fiction, Witchy
Tales: Gail Warning. When four elderly witches (the unofficial neighborhood watch group) spot
suspicious activity at a neighboring house, they get involved with trying to figure out what is going
on. Using potions and spells, they discover the new neighbors are up to no good. Pat previously
published a romance novel set along the Potomac, Hooked.
E. Louis Jefferson writes in several genres, but his recent children's book, The Little Tadpole,
shows that being kind to each other and making friends starts at a young age and how rewarding
friendship is. The story tells of a young tadpole who wasn't allowed to play with the older frogs
in his pond because he was too young. He was terribly lonely because he had no friends. When
he grew into a full grown frog, he remembered what that was like and how lonely it made him
feel. He convinces all his new friends that just because they are older, everyone needs friends,
especially the youngest members of their community.
Michael Kibler's Horses, Humans and Harmony takes a psychological approach to working with
horses. Mr. Kibler trains horses in Southern Maryland, and respects the powerful bond between
horses and humans.
BookNuts BookStore is located at 4459 Crain Highway, Unit 103, White Plains, MD. For more

July 15: Packing for Mars: The
Curious Science of Life in the
Void by Mary Roach. Space is a
world devoid of the things we need
to live and thrive: air, gravity, hot
showers, fresh produce, privacy.
Space exploration is in some ways
an exploration of what it means to
be human. How much can a person
give up? What happens to you when you can’t walk for
a year? Is it possible for the human body to survive
a bailout at 17,000 miles per hour? To answer these
questions and more, space agencies set up all manner
of quizzical and startlingly bizarre space simulations.
As Mary Roach discovers, it’s possible to preview space
without ever leaving Earth. From the space shuttle
training toilet to a crash test of NASA’s new space
capsule (cadaver filling in for astronaut), Roach takes
us on a surreally entertaining trip into the science of
life in space and space on Earth.

King Peggy July 22: King Peggy:
An American Secretary, Her Royal
Destiny, and the Inspiring Story
of How She Changed an African
Village by Peggielene Bartels and
Eleanor Herman. The astonishing
journey of American secretary,
Peggielene Bartels, who suddenly
finds herself king to a town of 7,000 people on Ghana's
central coast, half a world away. Upon arriving for
her crowning ceremony in beautiful Otuam, she
discovers the dire reality: there's no running water, no
doctor, no high school, and many of the village elders
are stealing the town's funds. Ultimately, a deeply
traditional African town is uplifted by the ambitions of
its decidedly modern female king, and Peggy is herself
