It is approximately four miles south east of Royston and is about 16 miles from Cambridge. Barkway has a number of 15th and 16th century properties, some with beautifully thatched roofs. The High Street was once part of the main London to Cambridge coaching route. St Mary Magdalene Church is over 800 years old and has a full peal of eight bells, which are rung every week. The village has an infant’s school, the Tally-Ho Pub, a recreation ground, with children’s play area and football pitches. The historic Reading Room, village pond and wagon wash are particular features of the village landscape. People choose to live in villages, like Barkway, to take advantage of the benefits of rural life, to have access to the countryside and to enjoy the peace and tranquility, whilst remaining within close proximity to the facilities and amenities of large towns and cities. There is always something interesting going on in the village, and there are many different activities and organisations for people to become involved with. We believe Barkway is a wonderful village and a great place to live. Life in any village, however, depends very much on the people who live there and their willingness to interact and communicate with each other. People’s talents and time, no matter how little, are of great value to the social life in any village. Barkway residents and Barkway Parish Council are extremely grateful and would like to thank those who freely give their time and effort for the benefit of all. It is easy to move to a lovely village, like Barkway, yet miss much of what there is to do, and see, for lack of information. This booklet is provided as a quick and easy reference for you and contains information that will help your arrival in Barkway to be smooth and satisfying. It provides information on things like local shopping and essential services and amenities that are sometimes difficult for newcomers to find. We hope you will find it helpful. 3 Barkway Parish Council In order to maintain the nature and quality of life in rural villages like Barkway, it is necessary to monitor and manage any proposed changes that may present themselves and by doing so, help to find the most suitable and acceptable changes for the community as a whole. Barkway Parish Council is an elected body of volunteers and has a role in the community to ensure that any proposed changes are appropriate and beneficial to the community. The Parish Council is made up of seven Councillors and a Parish Clerk. Each Parish Councillor has a portfolio of responsibilities. Parish Council meetings take place on the second Monday of the month and minutes of the meetings are placed on the village website: www.barkway-village.org.uk Members of the public are welcome to attend Parish Council meetings The Parish Council is financed by the parish precept, which helps to fund village activities and projects. The precept is calculated annually based on the budgeted expenditure for the coming year and is collected by North Herts District Council as part of the Council Tax demand. The Parish Council holds an annual parish meeting in May, where the annual report is delivered with details of past and planned activities. Representatives of the various village organisations are invited to attend and present their reports on the activities of their organisations. Following this meeting, the Parish Council publishes its annual report, which includes the annual financial statement of accounts As well as publishing news on the village website, the Parish Council also publishes a quarterly newsletter called the “ Barkway Bulletin”. This is delivered to every household in the village. Information and events are also posted on the village notice boards around the village and in The Diary. The Diary is a popular monthly newsletter, covering news and events in Barkway and the surrounding villages. Subscription is £3.00 per year and a sample copy can be obtained from Jane Greening on 01763 848208. 4 Barkway Village Organisations This is a quick reference guide with the contact details of some of the clubs and organizations in Barkway. Today the school is still guided by these principles to ensure that pupils leave the school as well-rounded and confident individuals. The school is situated on the site of the original village green and market place. Following its foundation as a Church of England school in 1839, it has seen many changes, although it is still part of the Church community and the content of the curriculum reflects this. There are three large classrooms, a hall and a library. Recently a small outside courtyard has been converted into a flexible learning space (the atrium) and is frequently used for group work and meetings. The Atrium is also equipped for I.C.T (Information and Communications Technologies) teaching. The playground is brightly marked for games activities, and provides essential space for learning, including science, technology and maths. Raised garden beds are used for growing fruit and vegetables, which are enthusiastically prepared and eaten by the children. Two adjoining paddocks are used for playtimes and sports facilities, by kind permission of the neighbouring landowner. 6 Education (continued) Middle Schools Edwinstree VC (C of E) Middle School Norfolk Road, Buntingford,SG9 9AW www.edwinstree.herts.sch.uk 01763 271 446 The Greneway School Garden Walk, Royston, SG8 7JF www.greneway.herts.sch.uk 01763 243 650 Roysia Middle School Burns Road, Royston, SG8 5EQ www.roysia.herts.sch.uk 01763 241 555 Upper Schools/Colleges Freman College Bowling Green Road, Buntingford, SG9 9BT 01763 271 818 Meridian School Garden Walk, Royston, SG8 7JH 01763 242 236 7 Church Information St Mary Magdalene (C of E) Church Lane, Barkway Church Warden: Karin Weston 01763 271 912 Barkway Church is open every day for prayer or quiet contemplation and you are very welcome.
