sewage treatment in bytom
SEWAGE TREATMENT IN
BYTOM
Households in
Bytom get
running water
from special
water reservoir
(Goczalkowice
Lake) in the
region.
During our work
on the project, we
were also
interested in
what happens
with sewage in
our town.
We visited a
sewage treatment
plant in Bytom. It
is the biggest
treatment plant in
the city and was
modernised
(thanks to EU
funds) in 2004.
It treats
household waste
from several
districts in
Bytom.
It treats waste
from about
200 000
households.
THE PROCESS OF WATER
TREATMENT
Through a system
of underground
pipes, waste from
houses is carried
to a sewage
treatment plant.
The waste is first
cleaned in a
mechanical way to
get rid of bigger
pieces of rubbish
carried with
waste water.
Then, the waste
goes to reactors
where it is
cleaned in a
biological way.
There, the waste
gets rid of nitrogen
and phosophorus
and undergoes
some other
clarification
processes.
What comes
out, is clean
water (but not
drinking water),
which is
pumped into a
local river.
In this way,
the quality of
water in the
river is
improved.
Sediment (mud)
that is removed
from water in the
clarification
processes is used
to produce
fertilizers and
biogas.
Biogas is, in turn,
used to produce
electricity and to
heat the buildings
of the sewage
treatment plant in
winter.
