New Academic Programs and
Community Support
This fall brings exciting new developments in academics at
STU. New degree programs, new institutes, new research opportunities for faculty and students, renovated facilities, and a new
advisory council for the School of Business are all aimed at ensuring the University becomes the leading Catholic university in the
Southeast.
Dean Tony Villamil has recruited a group of 33 distinguished
industry leaders to the School of Business Advisory Council, many
of whom are STU alumni or members of the President's Board of
Advisors. Composed of local business leaders in diverse sectors of
the economy, the Council focus is primarily on the global nature of
the South Florida business environment.
Its mission is to connect the School of Business and the business community, provide an external perspective and review, as well
Dr. Gregory Chan, Provost
as advocacy for the School's programs. To enable our graduates to
successfully contribute to the local economy, they advise on curriculum and programming that will meet current and future needs of the business community. Council members will mentor our students and help provide
leadership training.
One of their most significant activities will be to assist the career services office to create internships and
employment opportunities for graduates.
Three work groups of Council members meet regularly on their various tasks. They are helping develop
the new Institute for Global Entrepreneurship, which houses the International Business degrees and the

STU 50th Anniversary
St. Thomas University will be celebrating its 50th
anniversary in 2011.
Founded in 1961 as Biscayne College by the Augustinian order, this small Catholic men's college
known as “Villanova of the South” had its roots in the
Universidad de Santo Tomas de Villanueva in Havana.
A group of American Augustinian priests from Philadelphia founded this university, Cuba's first private
Catholic university, in 1946.
However, by 1961 Fidel Castro's militia had confiscated the school's land and expelled the faculty and
priests. Many of the administrators, faculty and students came to Miami and the Diocese of Miami invited
the Augustinians to start a new college.
For many years, Biscayne College partnered with
Barry College, the women's Catholic college in Miami
which is now Barry University, for academic programs

Global Entrepreneurship Week, at the First Entrepreneur Awards Reception to be held November 18 in the Fernandez Family Center for
Leadership and Wellness.
Other groups are helping create a long-term business plan for the

of Business, and seek funding for the Business Scholars Achievement Program, scholarships to outstanding graduate students.
An exciting new development at the
School of Theology and Ministry, now back
in a beautifully renovated Sullivan Hall, is
the launching of the new Master of Divinity
degree and the founding of the Ecumenical
Institute. The degree prepares students for ordination in many different Christian traditions
by providing competency in scripture and tradition; culture and social issues; personal and

leadership.
As a result of the affiliation of the Florida

this new degree is not only for lawyers, but also for all professionals
who will be dealing with the increasingly complex matters affecting
the environment.
Biscayne College has moved to its elegant new home on the newly-refurbished second floor of Kennedy Hall. Faculty and student researchers in the Department of Social Science and Counseling are
thrilled to move into two new state-of-the-art research laboratories,

research projects accordingly.

and social activities.
By 1984, with the establishment of the School of Law and other
graduate degree programs, the college, which was by then cooeducational, became St. Thomas University. In 1988 it came under the sponsorship of the Archdiocese of Miami, conferring upon St. Thomas
the distinction of being the only
Catholic Archdiocesan-sponsored
university in the State of Florida.
Since then, the campus and the
students have taken on a new look.
In the last 10 years we have a new
entrance, a new chapel, a new residence hall, a new science building
and finally, the athletic facility our
alumni have been dreaming of for
many years.

high schools in the northeast. They

• Amazing guest speakers – top sports industry executives shared
their experiences in your classroom.
• The new Institute for Sports Administration will also provide continuing education opportunities and certificate courses to sports industry professionals.
• Best SPOAD Alumni Network in United States - let’s grow it!
You will soon receive details on how to refer candidates. Meanwhile,
send any names you have to Dr. Jan Bell at [email protected]. Thank you

Chinese Students and Scholars Join
STU Community
STU welcomed 15 graduate and undergraduate students arriving
from China this fall. They are majoring in International Business,
Sports Administration and Education.
In addition, two Chinese scholars are also on campus to further their
studies. Aurora Xie is studying Foreign Language and Applied Linguistics and Michelle Liu is studying Second Language Acquisition.
They will be on campus for six months working with faculty in the
Archive and Museum and assisting students and faculty in Biscayne
College.
International scholars provide learning experiences for STU participants and international exchange scholars and students. STU has
previously entertained overseas scholars from Italy and Austria.

Archbishop Wenski Takes Over
Thomas Wenski, formerly Bishop of Orlando, was
installed June 1 as the new Archbishop of Miami, succeeding
Archbishop John C. Favolora. Archbishop Wenski is now the
head of the corporation at STU, one of only nine colleges and
universities in the country sponsored by the diocese.
STU President Rev. Monsignor Franklyn M. Casale
welcomed the appointment of Archbishop Wenski saying, “We
are very pleased that Pope Benedict XVI appointed Bishop
Thomas Wenski as the new Archbishop of Miami. He already
knows and has witnessed the progress of our University. He
served as a member of the Board of Trustees from 1998 to
2003. He comes uniquely qualified with so many gifts as a
pastor, administrator and with his ability to understand and
speak to the many cultures of Miami. I congratulate him
on behalf of our University and personally look forward to
working closely with him.”
Archbishop Wenski is well known in Miami. Many STU
students will remember him when he was pastor of Notre
Dame d’ Haiti and faculty and staff knew him as Auxiliary
Bishop of Miami from 1997 until 2003.

Faculty and Student Community Outreach
Community outreach by the School of Theology and Ministry's Center for Justice and Peace links faith, experience and action – while supporting the university's overall goal of “developing
leaders for life.” Opportunities for students to experience community-based learning continue to grow internationally, regionally, and
locally under the leadership of Anthony Vinciguerra, Director of
the Center for Justice and Peace.
Internationally, through a partnership with our sister-diocese of
Port-de-Paix, Haiti, he coordinates a project that the Clinton Global
Initiative has officially accepted as a partner in its Haiti relief work.
Faculty and students work on three long-term development
projects in the
region: a fairtrade coffee project, a fair-trade
artisan project,
and a large-scale
solar-energy
initiative.

country and Marcela Moyano, Professor of Communications, has
collaborated through her production of an award-winning student/
faculty documentary on the project entitled “Blooming Hope”. Dr.
Alberto Varela, Professor of Physics, similarly partners in the
project by involving his students in the design and implementation
of solar-energy systems – a vitally important source of energy in
one of the most-deforested areas of the planet.
The Center also works regionally with its Spring Break Immer-
sion for Justice course, an intensive introduction to Catholic Social
Thought on immigration, agriculture, and farm-labor. A five-day
immersion in Immokalee, FL, provides students hands-on experience
by joining forces with Coalition of Immokalee Workers and other
farmworker advocacy
organizations.
They live in local
shelters, subject themselves to the conditions of Southwest
Florida's poorest community, and alongside
students from 14 other

Through this work,
STU students have been instrumental in helping persuade McDonald’s
and Burger King to pay more for Florida tomatoes, which in turn has
helped raise the wages and conditions of farm workers throughout the
state.
In our own local community, the Center for Justice and Peace
coordinates faculty and student involvement in the work of People
Acting for Community Together (PACT) – South Florida's largest
faith-based community organizing coalition. Every year STU faculty
and staff participate in PACT's process of issue identification, research, and advocacy for local policy change.
Over the past two years STU's involvement has helped create a
local-hiring ordinance for Miami-Dade County, a drug rehabilitation
program, and increased security at local inner-city schools.
Dean Iannone Retires
Dr. Joe Iannone, Dean of the School of Theology and Ministry, retired last summer. Since he
arrived in Miami in 1982, he has held many positions at STU.
He first chaired the Department of Religious Studies & Humanities and then became Dean of
Arts & Sciences and finally Dean of Graduate Studies before retiring as the first Dean of the School
of Theology and Ministry. He directed the Institute for Pastoral Ministries from 1983 until his retirement.
During those 28 years he became a well-known presence in the South Florida religious community. Among the many new programs he introduced to the University were the Peacemakers of
the Community, Graduate Certificate in Ecology and the Human Spirit, Master of Arts in Pastoral
Ministries with the Deaf; Ph.D. in Practical Theology; The Center for Wholistic Spirituality, The
Center for Peace and Justice, the Center for Loss and Healing; and finally, this year, the Master of
Divinity degree.

succeeds him as Interim Dean of the School of Theology and Ministry.

Faculty and Student Research Projects
The NIH-funded research project of Dr. Judi Bachay, Professor
of Guidance and Counseling and Dr. Barbara Buzzi, Professor of
Marriage & Family Therapy, targets grandparents living in STU's
immediate neighborhood who are raising their grandchildren and who
may experience overwhelming financial, emotional and physical strain
within an economically “stressed” cultural climate and a community
affected by violent crime. They
research the availability of
health and support services in
the area by community mapping and assess specific experiences and access or barriers to
health care and other support
services by individual assessments and focus groups. They
Research Assistants Victoria Rodriguez
will then develop and propose and Raymond Hewitt are participating in
a comprehensive, culturallythe “Granny Grant”
competent intervention plan.
The project is a collaboration with Dr. John Abdirkin, Professor of
Biology, and his nursing students who will assess baseline health and
wellness indicators of the participants.
Dr. Jodi Grace, Professor of Psychology, and her research students are studying why people often avoid or delay medical attention
despite recent medical advances allowing physicians to prevent, treat,
and manage a variety of previously incurable and often undetected
diseases.
Her research
investigates psychological
reasons, such as concerns
over identity, why people
delay or avoid medical
attention. For example,
people may delay testing
for sexually transmitted
diseases because of the
societal stigma surroundUndergraduate Research Fair
ing such diseases. They
will present their findings at a conference in early 2011.
Dr. Jeffrey Pickens, Professor of Psychology, and his graduate
students conducted research on youth violence prevention in Miami
Gardens and Opa Locka, reflecting STU's commitment
to Catholic social teaching
values that use research to
address social problems.
They presented their results
at two prestigious national
conferences – the Annual
Convention of the Association for Psychological Science in Boston, MA, and the
Society for the Study of SoL-R: Gulsah Cetin, Rolka Moise, Dr. Jeffrey

Professors Nicole Grandmont-Gariboldi of the School of
Business and Enrique Zamora of the School of Law together with
undergraduate and graduate finance and accounting students and law
students, are helping elderly persons protect themselves against financial abuse. They have initiated strategies to minimize the elder's
exposure to predatory abusive financial practices, including pressure
sales of financial products and unconscionable lending schemes.
Drs. Pilar Maul and Jeffery Plunkett, Professors of Biology,
offer research opportunities to talented undergraduates enrolled in
the rapidly growing Science Fellows program.
In its second year, Dr. Plunkett’s Spinal Cord Research Project,
funded by the Department of Defense, studies the possibility of finding
cells that can regenerate after spinal cord injury. This semester he and Dr.
Alexis Tapanes-Castillo are working with 12 students, some of whom
will intern at the University of Pittsburgh, STU's partner in the project.
Dr. Maul’s research includes a collaboration with the Conservation Program at Bok Tower Gardens
in Lake Wales, FL, to improve the tissue culture propagation system of two
Florida endangered species. She also
collaborates with scientists at the USDA’s Agricultural Research Service,

Last summer, 10 of Dr. Maul’s plant science students were
awarded a nine-week internship at the USDA station. Their mission
was to conduct environmentally sound research on tropical and subtropical crops, including the conservation and genetic improvement
of species such as avocado, mango, and cacao.
