Serving Up Success!!
Our Place Coffee was born out of an idea
between two friends: Mike Pasulka, owner
of Players Sports Bar in Poway, and retired
attorney Jon Kurtin, whose 22-year-old
daughter, Bernie, has Down syndrome.
Award of
Excellence
At the restaurant, which is next door
to the California Department of Motor
Vehicles, Mike noticed long lines of people
waiting outside every morning. This got
him thinking… he mentioned it to Jon
and, between anticipating the needs of
people in line and limited employment
prospects for adults with disabilities out of
school, a coffee cart business came to life.
Mike Pasulka received the
KUSI & Torrey Pines Bank
Breaking Away Award of
Excellence for his efforts
in making Our Place Coffee
possible and providing
job opportunities
for individuals with
disabilities.
Our Place Coffee is housed in Players’
spacious outside patio. Partnering with Players, The Arc of San Diego employs six young adults, who under
the supervision of job coaches, work Monday through Friday in two shifts.
The Breaking Away Award
honors individuals or
businesses who "Break
Away" from the pack
and through necessity
or vision make amazing
contributions to their
community.
Work starts at 6:30 a.m. The first crew is responsible for the morning routines of opening and set-up,
properly brewing coffee and transferring to airtight thermal carafes, putting snacks together, preparing for
customers, taking orders, and managing cash registers. The second shift at 9:00 a.m. continues the tasks of
preparation, service, stocking, and cleaning. The cart closes at 11:00 a.m.
“Our Place Coffee is a tremendous opportunity
for adults with developmental disabilities to be
vibrant, contributing members of the community
in which they live,” said David W. Schneider,
President & CEO of The Arc of San Diego.
“I don’t look at it from
the perspective of a
businessman but as a
human being,” says Mike.
He recently hired one of
the cart workers to help
out with dishwashing
and food prep at Players
Sports Bar on Sunday
afternoons.
If you happen to be in Poway, looking for a
morning bite or waiting at the DMV, be sure to stop
by! Customers have a choice of coffee, Nespresso
lattes, tea, sodas, bottled water, muffins, pastries,
breakfast burritos, and other snacks.
Mike Pasulka is a long-time supporter of The Arc
of San Diego and Jon Kurtin serves on the Arc San
Diego Foundation Board of Directors.
Mike Pasulka’s
commitment to The Arc
of San Diego and people
with disabilities is deeply
appreciated — and for
this we say thank you!
Our Place Coffee 13437 Community Road, Poway Monday-Friday Open 7:00–11:00 a.m.

President’s
Message Welcome The Arc of San Diego is pleased to welcome
Chris Shilling as the new Area Director for The
Sol and Ruth Gerber Family Center in Chula
Vista. Most recently Chris held the position of
Area Director of East County Training Center
(ECTC).
December is
often a time
of reflection,
celebration,
family, and
gratitude.
As we
look back on the year
passed, I am grateful for
our accomplishments as an
organization and filled with
optimism.
Prior to joining ECTC, Chris was Regional
Operations Manager at the Center for Autism and Related Disorders,
Director of Operations at Business 360, and Senior Director of Public
Safety General Growth Properties.
We are indebted to our
generous supporters,
devoted volunteers,
dedicated staff, and those
we serve for your belief and
confidence in our work.
He holds a Master's Degree in Organizational Leadership and
Bachelor's in Business Management. He is a faculty member
at the University of Phoenix, instructing leadership, business,
organizational security management, criminal justice, and
organizational behavior and development courses. Chris also serves
as Chairman of the Chula Vista Board of Ethics.
We are humbled by
the Gerber Family’s
deep commitment and
magnificent gift of $800,000
to launch our capital
campaign, Building for SelfSufficiency, in Chula Vista.
We sincerely appreciate the
outpouring of support from
all donors who have given
to the campaign so far. I
encourage you to invest in
the future of our Center.
The Sol and Ruth Gerber Family Center offers services to 227 consumers
and employs 52 staff.
We are exhilarated by
the allegiance of Jon
Kurtin, whose annual golf
tournament has provided
more than 1,300 consumers
with holiday gifts for the past
23 years.
Chris has a strong background in business
management, leadership, and organizational
development.
Farewell
The Arc of San Diego bids goodbye to
Terri Thorn, Area Director of The Sol and
Ruth Gerber Family Center, who retired
in November after 11 years at the helm.
Terri began her career in early childhood
education and addressed the developmental
needs of children for more than 25 years.
We thank her for her service and wish her
happiness in future endeavors.

Tribute and Memorial Benches
Are you looking for a meaningful way to
remember or honor a loved one or celebrate a
marriage, anniversary, or other special event?
A garden bench is a wonderful, long-lasting
way to honor or memorialize a family
member or friend. It is ideal for peaceful
remembrance and reflection, a place to
take a break, rest tired feet, read a book, or
converse.
Happy one-year anniversary, Patti Cooprider, as
an AWESOME volunteer! A well-known artist, Patti teaches
art classes once a month at Sulpizio Family Center. She
has consumers working on a variety of projects including
self-portraits, collages, Valentine's Day cards, and holiday
decorations. On receiving her one-year service pin, Patti
shared that she leaves the class "with so much joy." Both Patti
and husband, Coop, are long-time supporters of The Arc who
also serve as Honorary Jewels for the annual gala.
Celebrate the gift of family, miracle of
birth, love, gratitude, friendship, memories
with a memorial bench placed throughout
our grounds at Arc centers in San Diego,
El Cajon, Chula Vista, and San Marcos.
A personalized plaque etched with your
message will tell your story of joyful tributes
and fond farewells.

Your IRA
Rollover Gift
Two congressional bills, America
Gives More Act of 2015 and Public
Good Charitable Rollover Act of
2015 calls for restoration of the
IRA charitable rollover incentive
for the 2015 and 2016 tax years.
The Arc of San Diego supports
both bills and is hopeful these
will be made into permanent
laws. However, as of December
2015, the IRA charitable rollover
is not available for 2015 gifts.
Although there is currently no
legislation that provides for a
2015 IRA charitable Rollover,
you can still request that your
IRA administrator transfer funds
directly from your account to
The Arc of San Diego. While
your gift will be taxable as a
regular withdrawal, it can also
count towards all or a portion
of your required minimum
distribution and you may be
eligible to take a federal income
tax charitable deduction for your
gift. Should Congress reinstate
the IRA charitable rollover
retroactively for 2015, you will
have the choice of which strategy
to employ.
The IRA Charitable Rollover
provision allows individuals
aged 70½ and older to donate
up to $100,000 directly from
their Individual Retirement
Account (IRA) and Roth IRA to
qualified charitable organizations
such as The Arc of San Diego
without incurring a tax on their
contributions.
This benefit would be available
to all taxpayers, regardless of
whether or not deductions are
itemized. However, transfers
must be made directly by your
plan provider. Funds withdrawn
by you and then contributed do
not qualify. Please note that gifts
from 401(k), 403(b), SEP, and
other plans are not eligible.
Be sure you consult with your tax
advisor to see if an IRA Rollover
is right for you. Please contact
our Development Department
at (619) 685-1175 or visit our
Planned Giving page at www.arcsd.com/plannedgiving.

be discussed with your personal financial and tax
advisors.

Measuring Excellence
Highlights
The Arc of San Diego uses the Outcomes Measurement tool to evaluate programs provided
to individuals and families*. The main questions we address are: Has the program made a
difference? What has changed in their lives? How are their lives better? Responses help us make
necessary modifications to strengthen our programs and improve effectiveness.

n 1951, a committed group of fearless
parents founded The Arc of San Diego
when they came together to see what
could be done for their marginalized
children with disabilities.
Through the years the promise made,
with tough, tenacious activist parents and
disability professionals leading the charge,
was to obtain critical services – education,
employment, housing, recreation,
healthcare, transportation and provide the resources to build a life
full of meaning.

Passage of the Lanterman Developmental
Disabilities Services Act, Public Law 94-142,
Rehabilitation Act of 1973 (Section 504),
Individuals with Disabilities Education Act
(IDEA), and Americans with Disabilities Act
(ADA) led to widespread change, keeping the
promise of acceptance and inclusion.
Today, The Arc of San Diego proudly honors the
commitment to support children and adults with
disabilities. Our services empower independence
and uphold the right to live with dignity in our
communities. Into the future, as in the past, we
will always continue to do the right thing - keep
