We had the pleasure to host in Krakow, between 17 and 22 July 2011, the 16th International Symposium on Carotenoids, organized by the International Carotenoid Society, the Faculty of Biochemistry, Biophysics and Biotechnology of the Jagiellonian University, and Targi w Krakowie Ltd. The program of the Symposium covered both the traditional fields of carotenoid science as well as new developing areas to show recent achievements and future trends in carotenoid research. An accompanying exhibition of companies presenting carotenoid-related products and technologies contributed to the promotion of their activities and was a good opportunity for exchange of information between science and business. The main aims of the conference were to present and discuss the most important topics in different disciplines of carotenoid science and to facilitate interaction and cooperation between scientists. To achieve these goals, 62 top specialists in various areas of the carotenoid field were invited to give plenary and session lectures in the following sessions: SESSION 1. Nutritional Carotenoids and their Implication in Human Health In Memoriam: Professor Norman Krinsky Coordinators: William S. Blaner, Aldona Dembińska-Kieć, Joanna Góralska Chair: William S. Blaner, Aldona Dembińska-Kieć SESSION 2. Photosynthesis, Photochemistry, and Photoprotection by Carotenoids In Memoriam: Professor Trevor Goodwin Coordinators: Grażyna Białek-Bylka, Leszek Fiedor Chair: Yasushi Koyama, Tomas Polivka SESSION 3. Chemistry, Analysis, Chemical Synthesis, and Industrial Production of Carotenoids In Memoriam: Professor Dr. Hans-Dieter Martin and Dr. Rodney Lee Ausich Coordinators: Małgorzata Barańska, Agnieszka Kaczor, Frederick Khachik Chair: Małgorzata Barańska, Hansgeorg Ernst, Agnieszka Kaczor, Frederick Khachik SESSION 4. Carotenoids in the Prevention of Cancer and Cardiovascular Disease Coordinators: Józef Dulak Chair: Józef Dulak, Alicja Józkowicz, Joseph Levy, Yoav Sharoni SESSION 5. Interaction of Carotenoids with Reactive Oxygen Species Coordinators: Grzegorz Bartosz, Helmut Sies Chair: Fritz Boehm, Paola Palozza, Werner Siems, Wilhelm Stahl SESSION 6. Biosynthesis, Genetics, and Metabolism of Carotenoids Coordinators: Rafał Barański, George Britton, Joseph Hirschberg Chair: Rafał Barański, George Britton, Joseph Hirschberg SESSION 7. Carotenoids and Vision Coordinators: Paul S. Bernstein, John T. Landrum, Tadeusz Sarna Chair: John T. Landrum, Tadeusz Sarna, Johanna M. Seddon SESSION 8. Model Systems, Computational and in silico Studies of Carotenoids Coordinators: Wiesław I. Gruszecki Chair: Wiesław I. Gruszecki, Witold K. Subczyński Apart from invited plenary and session lectures there were 27 short oral presentations, selected from the abstracts. In addition, during three poster sessions 128 posters were presented and discussed. The Conference had truly international character with about 260 participants from 37 countries, among them about 220 from abroad. The biggest number of participants was from the USA (45), followed by Poland (43) and Japan (23). Forty presentations from the Symposium were submitted and published in this issue of Acta Biochimica Polonica. We hope that this special issue will be appreciated by the members of our carotenoid family and everybody interested in carotenoid science.
