Welcome to St. Francis Xavier Catholic Community of Faith Briefly highlight your point of interest here. Briefly highlight your point of interest here. Briefly highlight your point of interest here. Saturday 8:15 am Weekend Saturday Vigil Mass 5:00 pm Sunday 8:00 am, 9:30 am, 10:15 am (Gym) 11:30 am Reconciliation Every Saturday after the 8:15am Mass Second Sunday in Ordinary Time Wedding At Cana Welcome to St. Francis Xavier Catholic Community of Faith In today’s Gospel from John, we see the beginning of the public ministry of Jesus. In John’s Gospel, there is always more going on than just the literal text. Jesus begins His public ministry at a Wedding in Cana. There is a problem at this wedding, they have run out of wine. Mary desires to spare the groom’s family the embarrassment of running short of wine and brings this problem to Jesus. The response of Jesus: “Woman, how does your concern affect me? My hour has not yet come.” An ‘hour’ is a time for Him to manifest His glory and power. Jesus seems to change His mind and does what His mother asks, He changes water into wine. What are the religious/ spiritual meanings contained in this event? “Jesus did this as the beginning of his signs at Cana in Galilee and so revealed his glory, and his disciples began to believe in him.” The miracle at Cana becomes the occasion for Jesus to manifest his glory and power. He manifests this sign (and others) so that disciples will believe in Him. Disciples see His power and glory and believe in Him. His signs are invitations to believe in Him. Another meaning: the occasion for the first sign of Jesus is one of need, the groom has no more wine for the celebration. Jesus responds to our needs. And Jesus responds in an abundant way, the wedding now has an abundance of wine and it is good. There is a lot going on behind the story of Water changed into Wine. In today’s 2nd reading, we can also use the idea of abundance with which the Lord gifts His Church. Paul tells us of different forms of service, different gifts, different workings all coming from the same God. “To each individual the manifestation of the Spirit is given for some benefit.” The Lord gifts His Church individually and collectively in an abundant way. We do not all have the same gifts but we have received something for the building up of the Church. Our task to use the gift we have for the greater good. My best to you, Fr. Sheridan 2 January 18-23 Mon Tues. Thank you. First was to the magi then, the baptism of Jesus and, today we’re celebrating the sign at the wedding at Cana! Actually, every Sunday Eucharist is a most sublime epiphany of God. Through our being transformed by the ritual actions, we ourselves are reminded over and over again to be the Presence of Christ in our world. God loves us so much as to continually send the Son to be our savior. God trusts us so much as to send us to be the manifestation of God’s Presence! Welcome to St. Francis Xavier Catholic Community of Faith Worldwide Marriage Encounter Chicagoland Area The Magi offered gifts to the Christ Child. The scripture passages are taken from the Sunday Gospel to support our journey. This ancient but simple process allows God’s word to touch us in our daily lives and transform our hearts. When: Saturdays 9:00 – 9:45 a.m. On-going . Where: The “Upper Room” Second floor at the SFX Parish Office Small groups offer a valuable way to enrich our faith and provide us with companionship for our journey. There is no need to commit to every Saturday, come when your schedule permits. Everyone is always welcome. SFX Women’s Book Club Book: "A Man Called Ove," by Fredrik Backman When: January 19, 2016 at 9:30 A.M. Where: Mallinckrodt Community Center Reviewer: Blanca Dabrowski Hostesses: Barbara Stinneford and Barbara Dhein In this bestselling and delightfully quirky debut novel from Sweden's Fredrik Backman, a grumpy yet loveable man finds his solitary world turned on its head when a boisterous young family moves in next door. Meet Ove. He's a curmudgeon - the kind of man who points at people he dislikes as if they were burglars caught outside his bedroom window. He has staunch principles, strict routines, and a short fuse. People call him "the bitter neighbor from hell." But must Ove be bitter just because he doesn't walk around with a smile plastered to his face all the time? Behind the cranky exterior there is a story and a sadness.
