Cottage by the Sea Foundation Established in 2013, the Cottage by the Sea Foundation helps secure the future of the Cottage and its ability to offer tailored holiday programs. I’ve had the pleasure of participating in several activities during the year. It was inspiring meeting many children who attended the Cottage, including the African Children's Choir who were aged between 7 and 12 years. It was made up of orphaned children from Uganda, many of whom had lost one or both parents and all victims of extreme poverty. Along with Ambassador Glynn Harvey, I very much enjoyed attending the Annual Cottage by the Sea Golf Day at Flinders Golf Course. Alan Harrison (also a Cottage Ambassador) and Geoff Counsel do a magnificent job putting this event together each year. In January we again held the Patron’s Dinner with Rod Laver MBE. Following on from our very successful Some Highlights of our Year Contents From our Patron Woorabinda fundraising dinner in 2014 in Geelong, this year’s dinner was held in Melbourne and included Rod Laver MBE along with his old mates Ken Rosewall AM, MBE and Neale Fraser AO, MBE. A great night was had by all. Special thanks to Stephen Walter along with Cottage Ambassadors, Jimmy Bartel and Glynn Harvey, who also supported this event. What a wonderful morning we had at Government House in March to celebrate our 125th year. The then Governor, Alex Chernov AC, QC gave a delightful speech that followed our journey from 1890 onwards. It was lovely to meet so many Cottage branch members (past and present) along with other volunteers and supporters. • 18 international children from the African Children’s Finally, I would like to express my sincere gratitude to • 150 children from English Second Language Cottage for the wonderful work they are doing for the Choir Schools (St Albans, Braybrook, Footscray, Laverton, Werribee) staff, the Board of Management and volunteers at the 1,400 plus disadvantaged children and families we support each year. In addition to this hundreds more participated in our community groups, hospitality and school hire programs. Frank Costa OAM Cottage by the Sea, Queenscliff Inc. 2015 Annual Report Page 1 President and GM Report Another rewarding year for us all at the Cottage made even more so as we celebrated our 125th year. With increasing numbers of individuals, groups and organisations stepping forward to work together with us to create Inspiration - Fun - Opportunity for disadvantaged children and families, our future has never looked more secure. This feeling of confidence in our future is enhanced through our own Foundation which generates interest through recent and past bequests to the Cottage. The capital is maintained to help build sustainability for future generations to benefit from our programs while the Foundation’s annual interest earned provides us with about 20% of our annual financial needs, leaving us to raise the remaining 80% through donations, fundraising and community support. Such support is important and in many ways essential as our programs and holiday camps have never been utilised to a greater extent than during the past year with a record 1,487 attending our programs. Thanks to some wonderful support from the Shine On Foundation, Portland House Foundation, 5point Foundation and many others, we’ve increased the annual number of camps from 57 last year to 72 this year, utilising both the main Cottage and Riptide Cottage. As a board we are delighted about the Cottage community enabling us to take the children’s holiday experience to yet another level. In this our 125th year, we would like to express our appreciation for the valued relationships we have formed with our donors and supporters. Their contributions have enabled the Cottage to expand services by targeting areas of need, including regions of Victoria and children from isolated parts of Australia. Someone once said that organisations/ communities only really fail when good people choose to do nothing – how fortunate is the Cottage community, we have good people doing great things! A dedicated team of staff, volunteers, donors and supporters contribute towards the activities of the organisation, not only week in and week out but also year in and year out. Our new by-line of Inspiration - Fun - Opportunity has been embraced by our wonderful staff with enthusiasm and vigour! All our programs now emphasize these actions whilst encouraging children to be healthy, active, happy and secure. Our Invaluable Volunteers This year we offered five types of camp programs, They say that ‘Volunteering is time willingly given for engagement and leadership - Take a Break, REEF, Cottage is blessed with an abundance and Take a Break Family holidays. You will see more part of our Growing ranging from one-off camps to ongoing support, the common good and without financial gain' and the REEF/Mentor, Hospitality Program, National Program of volunteers who are an integral about these programs throughout this report. Cottage Community. We’ve had many successful fundraising events. The Annual Fair organised by the Queenscliff Branch raised a record amount which was largely due to the continued support of all branches, along with Glynn Harvey and his amazing work team and produce suppliers who donated truckloads of fruit and vegetables. With thanks to Steve Walter, Frank Costa AO, OAM hosted another intimate dinner with Rod Laver MBE, Ken Rosewall AM, MBE and Neale Fraser AO, MBE and the proceeds from that terrific night will fund a new activity barn to support the Cottage’s growing program and storage needs. The annual Cottage by the Sea Golf Day and Race Day raised record amounts again. Special thanks to Frank Costa AO, OAM, Glynn Harvey, Jan Wilkinson, all ambassadors, along with the Queenscliff, Geelong, Bellarine and Highton Ceres Acorn branches, as well as the Geelong Football Club, for an amazing year both from a fundraising and increasing awareness point of view. Finally, we sincerely wish to again thank all our board members, staff, volunteers, supporters and donors for enabling us to continue our work to the best of our ability and in the best interests of the children and families we support each year. •• Sources of• Revenue •• •• •• •• •• Trusts & Foundations (32%) Corporations (4%) Individuals (8%) Community Groups (8%) Trusts & Foundations (32%) Branches (5%) Corporations (4%) & Events (6%) Cottage Fundraising Individuals (8%) CBTS Foundation Dividends & Interest (27%) Community Groups (8%) Special Bequests (5%) Branches (5%) Cottage Generated Income, Hire & Sales (5%) Cottage Fundraising & Events (6%) CBTS Foundation Dividends & Interest (27%) Special Bequests (5%) Cottage Generated Income, Hire & Sales (5%) Allocation of Resources •• • •• • Delivery of Children's Programs and Services (75%) Unexpended/committed funds for designated programs (12%) Investment for Future Children's Services Development, Delivery & Sustainability (13%) Delivery of Children's Programs and Services (75%) Unexpended/committed funds for designated programs (12%) Investment for Future Children's Services Development, Delivery & Sustainability (13%) Cottage by the Sea, Queenscliff Inc. 2015 Annual Report Page 3 The Cottage Board Bob Bellhouse PRESIDENT Bob has held positions in the education and community sectors. Intake Take a Break Program Jaelene Van de Ven has arranged for 1,487 primary Over 40 Take a Break camps offered children fun and unlike any other. Our programs are run by energetic activities. Firm favourites are swimming in Queenscliff and secondary students to experience a Cottage camp and enthusiastic staff who hold many qualifications and have equipment to facilitate these activities. The students are encouraged, supported, inspired, and engaged into trying new activities that they may have never experienced before. A number of our students attending camps have come from trauma, chaos and live in very transient environments, never experiencing a secure and safe place whilst others just need some time to be a kid. We provide a safe and secure environment from the moment they step off the bus. We continue to have very successful partnership camps with many schools. Yuille Park continues to a safe opportunity to partake in many seaside outdoor rock pools, surfing the waves at Ocean Grove main beach, visiting the Marine & Freshwater Discovery Centre and boat cruises around Port Phillip Bay (thanks to Frank Costa’s kind donations and Skipper Wes who drives the boat). This provides them with the opportunity to see giant container ships, dolphins in the crystal blue waters of Sorrento, the native birds that live on Pope’s Eye and the many seals that inhabit Chinaman’s Hut. Through generous donations the children were offered special events, including taking 8 students to Rod Laver Arena to see Raphael Nadal take on Mark Philippoussis, Fernando Verdasco and Rod Laver MBE himself in a new style of tennis called Fast 4. Rotary Club of Geelong generously provided 30 tickets to an afternoon magic show in the Supercats Arena.
