Friendly clubs, grass greens, a comfortable hotel, and one of the most reliable climates in Spain.” Jonathan Plumridge, Commercial Director, Personal Touch Holidays Mojacar Mojacar is one of Andalusia's most picturesque ‘pueblos blancos’, or white villages. Originally constructed by the Moors, who occupied the majority of them for well over 500 years, their whiteness derives from a limestone wash that both repels insects and protects the buildings onto which it is painted from the region's fierce summer sunshine. The beauty of these historic communities derives in part from their spectacular locations, most having been constructed atop easily defensible peaks or hills. They are also almost all architecturally enchantingly harmonious, having gradually shrunk from importance over the centuries until they were relatively recently rediscovered, redeveloped and regenerated by escaping urbanites, bohemians and tourists. Consequently, today they are generally replete with fine residences, craft workshops and quality bars and restaurants. Optional Excursion Possibilities The Scenic South: Explore the dramatic arid landscapes of the Cabo De Gata Nature Reserve, featuring unusual volcanic rock formations and many unique plant varieties, such as the emblematic European Fan Palm. En route take in the fishing village of San José and shop in the picturesque village of Nijar for traditional rugs and ceramics. Almerían Majesty: Visit the capital of the former Moorish Kingdom of Almería, exploring the second largest Moorish citadel in Spain and the highly unusual cathedral, a hybrid of Gothic and Renaissance styles, that once sported canon, but today houses only various priceless works of art. Oasis Tropical Pool Area & Gardens The Costa De Almeria From a holidaymaker’s point of view one of the most significant things about the Costa de Almería is that it enjoys by far the lowest annual rainfall of any coastal area in the Mediterranean and benefits from extremely comfortable air and water temperatures year round. Such is the dryness of the region in fact that it has been used as a budget location for many spaghetti westerns, such as ‘The Good, The Bad & The Ugly’ and ‘A Fistful Of Dollars’. This uniqueness of climate has generated much unique flora and fauna, preserved in the Cabo De Gata Nature Reserve. It has also led to the greenhouse cultivation of fruit and vegetables on a massive scale and the development of a significant tourism industry. Its major city, Almería, was an extremely important port during the Moorish period and features the county’s second largest Moorish citadel and an impressive fortified cathedral.
