LECTURE SYNOPSIS
The Oral-Systemic Connection in Daily Dental Practice:
Implementing Current Evidence-Based Knowledge
Speaker: Professor Brian L Mealey
Description:
Many patients come into dental offices today with questions about the “MouthBody Connection”. They’re reading and hearing about these relationships
on the internet, in magazines and from other sources. Dental offices are
on the front line in the question-answering game. So what do we tell these
patients? What does the evidence really tell us about the relationships between
inflammatory periodontal diseases and systemic health? How does this impact
my dental practice?
This lecture is designed to provide a clinically relevant discussion about the
interrelationships between oral health and systemic conditions such as immune
compromise, osteoporosis, cardiovascular diseases, diabetes mellitus, and
pregnancy.
Objectives:
This program is designed to improve the participant’s ability to •
Discuss the emerging concepts of periodontal diseases as they relate
to other inflammatory diseases
•
Understand the influences of systemic conditions such as immune
compromise, diabetes and osteoporosis on periodontal health
•
Know how inflammatory periodontal diseases may impact
cardiovascular health, the clinical course of diabetes, and pregnancy
outcomes
•
Develop pathways of care for dental patients with diabetes
Tsunami of Chronic Diseases – What’s teeth got to do with it?
Speaker: Professor Chia Kee Seng
Singapore’s chronic disease burden is growing in magnitude. Between 1984
and 2010, diabetes prevalence in the population rose from 4.7% to 11.3%.
Furthermore, it has been estimated that every day, 15 people die from
cardiovascular disease (heart disease and stroke) in Singapore; cardiovascular
disease accounted for 29.6% of all deaths in 2013.
Although the link between chronic disease and oral hygiene may not be
instinctive to most, some connections between periodontal disease and chronic
disease are well-established in the scientific literature. Research suggests that
the relationship between diabetes and gum disease goes both ways: gum
disease appears more frequent and severe among diabetics, gum disease
sufferers have a harder time controlling their blood sugar levels, and severe
periodontal disease can increase blood sugar levels. Epidemiological studies
support that chronic periodontal infections are associated with an increased risk
of cardiovascular disease and even exacerbate existing heart conditions.
Today, many oral-systemic connections are accepted by both the medical and
dental professions. However, the strength of these links is still under investigation.
Moving forward in uncovering more oral-systemic connections and assessing
their strength, it is important to understand that these connections may not
be linear, but exist as dynamic and complex links depending on different organ
systems, disease entities, behavioural influences (e.g. diet and physical activity),
and environmental factors (e.g. access to dental services). As such, the time
may be right for the associations between oral diseases and other diseases
elsewhere in the body be discussed within the context of oral and overall
health, and not under the purview of dental health as separate from the rest of
systemic health and healthcare.
Emerging Challenges and Opportunities in Dental Practice
Speaker: Dr Wong Mun Loke
Over time, the practice of dentistry has evolved in tandem with advances in
technology, materials and techniques. Apart from these changes, dental practice
is set to be shaped by a myriad of other emerging challenges and opportunities
including the changing population demographics. This presentation sheds light
on some of these challenges and opportunities; highlights their implications of
dental practice and considers how the dental fraternity can prepare itself for
these new waves of change.

Body, Face and Teeth in Harmony
Speaker: Dr Andreas Kurbad
Pre-operative visualisation is necessary to determine the right size, form and
position of anterior restorations. Also for the patients acceptance a virtual
mock-up is very helpful. With modern computer-based technologies, these
ideas have a realistic basis. In the second step, the ideas must become reality.
Modern all-ceramic systems in combination with esthetic cementation materials
can be used to achieve nature-like results and give the patient a same or better
result as what was shown in the virtual preview.
SPEAKER PROFILES
Professor Brian L Mealey
Dr Brian Mealey is a Professor and the Graduate Program
Director in the Department of Periodontics at the University
of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. He served
21 years in the United States Air Force, where he was the
Chair of the Department of Periodontics and the Program
Director of the Air Force Periodontics Residency at Wilford
Hall Medical Center in San Antonio. He was Chief Military
Consultant in Periodontics to the U.S Air Force Surgeon
General. Dr Mealey is a Diplomate of the American Board
of Periodontology, and served many years as a Director of the Board. He is
co-editor and author of two textbooks, and he has published over 100 articles,
abstracts and textbook chapters in the scientific literature, with an emphasis on
inter-relationships between oral and systemic health. Dr Mealey maintains an
active clinical practice in periodontology and implant dentistry.
Professor Chia Kee Seng
Dr Chia is the Founding Dean and Professor in the Saw
Swee Hock School of Public Health, National University of
Singapore. He received his medical degree in 1981, Masters
of Science in Occupational Medicine in 1985 and Doctor of
Medicine in 1995.
He started his professional career as an Occupational Health
Physician, specializing in renal effects of heavy metals before
moving into molecular epidemiology.
His current research focuses on the study of how genetic and lifestyle factors
interact to cause chronic diseases (cancer, cardiovascular diseases, and diabetes
mellitus) and the translation of these findings to preventive measures at the
population level.
Dr Wong Mun Loke
Dr Wong Mun Loke is currently the Assistant Dean
(Education) and Co-ordinator of the undergraduate
Dental Public Health programme in the Faculty of
Dentistry. Mun Loke received his MSc, with Distinction,
in Dental Public Health from the Eastman Dental
Institute, London, in 2002. He is actively involved in the
undergraduate teaching of preventive dentistry, dental
public health and behavioural science. In his previous
work with the Health Promotion Board (HPB), Mun Loke
held a wide range of preventive health care portfolios and assumed clinical roles
in general dentistry; leadership roles in oral and general health promotion as
well as senior management functions.

Dentist in private practice since 1990.

technique, all-ceramics, computerized dentistry and implantology.
Since 1996 presenting seminars on clinics of all-ceramics and computerized
dentistry.
For more than 10 years lecturer at the ‘Karl-Häupl-Institute’ in Düsseldorf
