Wieser, Moore, Calhoun represent NSC at ATA Southwestern Grand, claim two trophies
NSC members Ray Wieser, Mike Moore and Scott Calhoun travelled to
the National Shooting Complex in San Antonio, Texas in early April to
participate in the ATA Southwestern Grand tournament. The
Southwestern Grand is contested over six days, and features 15 events
that total 1,600 targets across the three ATA disciplines (singles,
handicap, and doubles). The tournament started on Tuesday, April 9
with a “warm-up” day, with the high-overall championship events
beginning on Wednesday. The first four days of the event were 300
target days (100 singles, 100 handicap, and 50-pairs of doubles), with
the championship events being held on the last two days. Saturday was
the 200-bird championship singles, and the championship doubles and
handicap were shot on Sunday.
The Southwestern Grand attracts shooters from across the country,
including shooters from the Canadian provinces. The championship
events on Saturday and Sunday had between 300 and 400 shooters
participating. The National Shooting Complex uses 24 trap fields for
the competition, plus a couple additional fields for practice.
This was my ninth year shooting the Southwestern Grand, and it was
Mike’s fourth year. Ray Wieser also has three or four trips under his
belt. Ray has family in San Antonio, so he is able to visit family as
well as shoot. Mike and I opted to drive to San Antonio, because with
a shoot of this length it’s a definite benefit to be able to bring all of
your shooting gear, including ammunition, with you – something you
can’t do if you travel by air. We also brought along the golf clubs so
we could get a few rounds in before the shoot started. We left
Naperville on Friday morning around 6 am and travelled about 850
miles, stopping just north of Dallas for the night. We had a 7 am teetime on Saturday morning at a course in Gunter, Texas, and after
finishing our round we made the six hour drive into San Antonio. Mike
and I played golf again on Sunday morning in San Antonio. On
Monday morning we met up with our friend and squad mate Barry
Turner from Nova Scotia for a final round of golf before the shoot
started. We played golf in the morning and then went to the shooting
facility in the afternoon to get registered and shoot some practice
rounds.
We started shooting on Tuesday, and Mike and I shot every event thru
the end of the tournament. Ray skipped a few events during the week
so he could attend to family obligations. Mike and I logged 1,600
targets, as well as a few hundred more on the practice trap. Ray shot
1,100 of the 1,600 targets. We had pretty good weather all week.
Mornings were usually overcast and in the mid-60’s with the clouds
clearing around lunchtime and warming up all afternoon.

Moore, Ray Wieser
Wednesday was the only bad weather day, as a cold front came thru
around 7:30 am and dropped the temperature to 48 degrees when the
shoot started. The high for the day never made it to 60, so long pants
and jackets were required.
We finished shooting around 2 pm on Sunday, and spent about eight
hours in the car heading north, stopping overnight in McAlester,
Oklahoma. We kept ourselves entertained by watching the final round
of the Masters golf tournament on my iPad as we drove (Scott watched,
Mike drove). From McAlester it was about a 10 hour ride back to
Naperville, and we arrived back in town just before 6 pm on Monday.
Trophies
Scott got on the board first, winning the Class A doubles trophy on
Tuesday with a score of 98.
Mike followed with a 99 in singles on Wednesday, winning the Sub
Veteran category trophy. Mike had a couple of other close calls,
recording a perfect 100 in singles on Friday, only to lose the trophy on
the carry-over tiebreaker.
Squad for the week
The members from Naperville were again joined by two of our
“regulars” when we are in San Antonio.
Barry Turner from Nova Scotia shot with us again this year. We met
Barry at the Great Lakes Grand in Michigan a couple of years ago, and
now he’s a regular on our squad when we go to San Antonio. Barry
won one trophy in handicap, and just missed a trophy in the
championship singles, losing a shoot-off after a 199 in the main event.
Cal Stinson from Maine has been a regular with us at the Southwestern
Grand for the past couple of years. Cal is a great shot, and you couldn’t
find a better person to shoot with. Cal has been on the All-American
team every year since 1995, and at age 84 doesn’t show any signs of
slowing down. Cal will be inducted into the ATA Hall of Fame at this
year’s Grand American in August.
Ray couldn’t shoot with us on Saturday for the 200 singles
championship, so we had an opening on post 3. We were joined by a
young lady, Allison Raley, from the San Antonio area that was
shooting her first ATA targets. Allison had some prior experience
shooting in FFA competitions. She is a 17-year old high-school senior
who is planning to attend Texas A&M in the fall. For her first ATA
effort she did quite well, recording scores of 90 and 91 in the 200
singles. With Cal Stinson shooting to her right, there was a 67 year age
difference between the two.

Need a few vented shooting shirts?! Stay comfortable on the
line and in the clubhouse. We will direct you to a local
embroidery shop which supports the Club logo for
personalization at a nominal cost.
Shooting more and want to self-load steel shot shells? No better
resource than your sportsman’s club. Our program is not
offered to the general public, so members receive member-only
pricing and the deals can’t be beat. And if you’re shooting
sports disciplines run to rifle and handgun… we can help
support those too!
Great vendors include, but are not limited to Boyt and Bob
Allen, MEC and Hornady, Outers and MTM… to just name a
few. Need some factory ammunition; shells and bullets are
available from Winchester, Remington and Federal. The Club
buys shot and wads in bulk and pass that savings onto our
members. See what is available in this great member benefit.
Speaking of your eyes… you have a great eye protection
program from Randolph Engineering, manufacturer of the
world-renowned family of Ranger shooting eyewear. Preferred
pricing is tremendous and if you need prescription lenses, we
can assist getting those for you also, on a cost favored basis,
direct from our Randolph vendor… optical specialists who
understand the needs of shooters.
For more information, on the Co-Op program, speak with
members Scott Calhoun or Jay Spitz
Industry Membership
Being a member of the Amateur Trapshooting Association
(ATA), National Rifle Association (NRA) or Illinois State
Rifle Association (ISRA) has NEVER been a requirement for
membership in the Naperville Sportsman’s Club. However, as
a firearm owner and trapshooter, don’t chintz and let others
carry the water for you. Your sportsman’s club is a recruiter
for the NRA, ISRA, as well as a member club of the ATA.
As a recruiter, we offer NRA memberships at a discount and
earn the Club a commission in the process. As an ISRA
recruiter, we facilitate the enrollment of our Club members.
The ISRA is your voice in Springfield.
As the governing body for American Trap, we follow their
rulebook. You don’t need to register targets to support the
ATA. For ATA membership information, speak with Scott
Calhoun. Updated NRA and ISRA materials will be available
at the Clubhouse. For NRA and ISRA membership information
questions, contact me at [email protected]

HELP NEEDED
The Naperville Park District needs one or possibly two Club
members, who are organized and can handle money (count and
make change). Your fellow members need someone who is
interested, willing and able to help run the range one (1) day a
month, from behind the counter, to help Dave, Jon, Ed and I run
the trap range… I’m maxxed out at (2) Thursdays a month.
The 4-5 hours you might work, on any given day can pays for a
half dozen rounds of trap with shells or more than a dozen plus
rounds of targets-only… but the job comes with some
responsibility.
Can you keep focused and be somewhat detailed oriented? It
requires some ability to physically transfer a few cases of
ammunition on occasion.
Are you personable? You’re the first line of contact with
existing and prospective customers. You know what we do…
Are you willing to accept the responsibility for the safety of
folks under your supervision?!
Life Member
If the answer is yes and you want more information, talk to me
or Brad Wilson at the park district. Brad can be reached at
(630) 838-3532.
