I like movies with explosions. Crazy car chases on the big screen are lots of fun. Sci-Fi movies with evil aliens trying to conquer the earth are always a perennial favorite too! Of course, I still love what used to be called “swashbuckling” movies like The Adventures of Robin Hood (1939), the Mark of Zoro (1940), & the Three Musketeers (1948). There are some things about these movies that are amazingly similar from film to film. There is almost always some variety of “love interest”, whether a traditional “damsel in distress” or the more modern woman with abilities of her own who needs help to set things right. There is also almost always some severe reversal of fortune that takes place, usually to the hero himself. The villain will eventually be discovered as the cause of the reversal of fortune and the sudden climax at the end of the film will take place with the triumph of the hero over the villain. In these kinds of movies, the bad guy seems to be triumphant. Everything seems to be falling into place so that whatever evil scheme the bad guy has been concocting, looks like it is going to work out. The bad guy is going to win and there is nothing that stands in his way. But don’t worry. Have no fear! The villain always has a small flaw in his plans. And that’s what heroes are for! Saving the day! Yeah! (Cont. on next page) Page 2 (Continued from previous page) It’s funny how films have a way of reflecting real life. You and I are a part of what is called humanity defined as the whole of the human race, from the first man and woman in the dim past to the last of us sometime in the nebulous future. We humans have an enemy who hates us. We have an enemy who wants to see us come too nothing but trouble, destruction, and despair. Seemingly even worse, our enemy is an absolute expert and getting us to cooperate in our own destruction. But for a short while, we thought we had a hero, someone to stand against the enemy. He was a hero who would right all those ancient wrongs and set things right. It helped immensely that he was also a miracle worker. He gave sight to the blind, hearing to the deaf, and mobility to the handicapped. He fed 500 men and unnumbered women and children with just five little barley loaves and two little fish. He even raised the dead. He stood up against corruption in both the religious community and the civil community. He even favored the education of women which at the time was almost unheard of except among the very wealthy. But the local “powers that be” conspired together to have him arrested without any legal charges against him. They tried to convict him on false charges but couldn’t get their witnesses to agree on their false stories. He was tried in an illegal, behind closed doors, middle of the night court. They were unable to execute him themselves, so they took him to the representative of the Emperor who had the legal right to execute criminals. When asked what his crime was, they said, “We wouldn’t have brought him to you if he didn’t deserve death.” The best charge they had against him was that he was some religious nut who was stirring up the masses. They brought their own mob to demand the hero’s death, and the Emperor’s rep. gave in to their demands just to keep the peace. The Messenger — April 2015 enemy of all humanity had finally triumphed. The hope for humanity was dead and gone. And it was even worse than that. You see, this hero was not just humanity’s hope back then, he was humanity’s only hope for life eternal. Remember how I said that our enemy is an expert at getting us to cooperate in our own destruction? We make ourselves enemies of God when we choose to do things our own way instead of God’s way. And that’s every single man and woman who has walked on the face of the earth. To get what we think we want, when we think we have to have it which is right now if not sooner, we lie, cheat, steal, and fabricate our own excuses to justify our actions. We are jealous, greedy, selfish, lustful, envious, and angry without cause. And we lash out at those who are closest to us just because they are convenient targets. In short we are fallen sinful creatures who conspire against our own best interests. And we helped to kill the only human who ever lived without sin. He’s the only human who ever lived who did not deserve to die, and we killed him to try and silence him. Satan had won. Game Over! All was lost. No hope. Death Triumphant! The dead hero in the grave, silent & cold. Then came Sunday morning, before the sun had arisen over the eastern edge of the horizon, a group of women went to the tomb to finish the work of preparing the body for its resting place in the tomb. BOOM! The stone sealing the tomb was rolled away! The government guards at the tomb shook with fear and ran. Angels in white raiment appeared and proclaimed that the hero was alive! Just when Satan thought death was triumphant, just when the Devil thought he’d won, Jesus rose from the dead. And now everything is changed! “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should The hero was beaten, spit upon, stripped, not perish, but have everlasting life. For God did not scourged, forced to carry his own cross to the send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but execution grounds, nailed to the cross, and left to die that through Him, the world might be saved.” John 3:16 while his enemies made fun of him and taunted him for -17 That’s my favorite kind of ending! And it’s even his helplessness. And then he died… What kind of a better than the movies because it will last for story is that? I mean he died, end of story, role the eternity…., for those who believe. credits, it’s over. All the hopes of those whose lives he In Christ’s service, touched were dashed. And the really sad part is that this was NOT a movie. It was real life. It is real life. Pastor Brad The only hope for all humanity died with him. She has served in this capacity since 2012. Prior to her appointment to Living Faith UMC, she served 15 years as the Senior Pastor of Ivanhoe Community UMC in Riverdale, Illinois. In December of 2005, Pastor Taylor received a Doctorate of Ministry Degree in the area of Spiritual Formation from United Theological Seminary in Dayton, Ohio. The focus of her project was on Christian Spirituality: A Resource for Equipping, Enabling, and Empowering African-American Youth. She received the Masters of Divinity Degree from Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary in Evanston, IL and a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Northeastern Illinois University in Chicago. Pastor Taylor acknowledged her call to ordained ministry in 1983 and was licensed to preach while serving at Second Baptist Church of Evanston under the pastorate of the Reverend Dr. Hycel B Taylor. She was ordained in 1989 at Christian Church Baptist in Chicago, IL under the pastorate of Reverend Brenda J. Little. In 1997, she sought to have her credentials recognized by the Northern Illinois Conference of the United Methodist Church and was granted full membership as an elder in the United Methodist Church in June of 2001. Pastor Taylor for more than thirty years has faithfully served the Lord by spreading the Gospel of Jesus Christ through her preaching, teaching, and conducting various seminars and workshops for numerous churches and organizations. Her ministry is a holistic ministry that seeks to bring wholeness to the lives of God’s people through spiritual formation and development, using the spiritual disciplines of the Christian faith as a means to transform and empower God’s people. She has held several positions in ministry including being a member of the Field Education Department at Garrett- Evangelical Theological Seminary in Evanston, Illinois. Associate Minister at Bethany Baptist Church and Assistant Pastor at Second Baptist Church both located in Evanston, Illinois. She has served on the executive board and as assistant pastor of Women Spiritually Empowered an outreach ministry to women and teen girls. She is also a retired Chaplain of the United States Army Reserve, and former Director of Admissions & Recruitment at Northern Baptist Theological Seminary in Lombard, IL Rev. Taylor served as a member of the discussion group Black Women’s Leadership Roundtable that deal with violence against women and girls. She was also a board member and presenter with Women Ministry in the City, an outreach educational program to female seminarians throughout the country and worldwide. After 18 years of pastoral ministry in the United Methodist Church, she states, “I am still excited about my ministry because there is never a dull day. Today’s church is in constant transition; because we are planted in the midst of communities that are constantly changing. I see this as an opportunity for God to do great things in our midst if we remain open to the leading of God’s Spirit. My heart’s desire has been to pastor, and God has blessed me richly. Because of the love, compassion, and mercy God constantly shows to me, I cannot think of anything I’d rather do than serve God by serving God’s people.” Page 5 THURSDAY NIGHT BIBLE STUDY WITH PASTER BRAD — Beginning April 16 For the last 6 weeks, Pastor Brad has led a Wednesday night Lenten Bible Study. Page 8 The Messenger — April 2015 GOOD NEWS FROM GRACIE AT FUMC Happy Springtime, neighbors in the FUMC! I feel spring in my feet; how about you? Really, in-my-feet, from running in the grass, the one 70-degree day we had, March 16th. Whee! – a first, for this new year. Sunday Worship Timesfor me, anyway, was CARPOOLING TO THE Another first-time experience, to watch some of our members VOLUNTEERING AT A 9:00am ALLSTATE – YouthARENA & Adult Sunday School CONCESSION stand. I hid well and scurried when I had to, or I would have been trampled; steady 10:00 am – Blended Worship in Sanctuary lines of customers kept our people moving all evening. I was so glad to get back to the church to 11:00 ambut– ifNuevo Amanacer Worship rest my four feet, the volunteers’ feet hurt, I’ll bet their spirits soared, thinking about how September Worship Schedule the money they earned will benefit the church’s programs. Ask KAREN FITZGERALD; she’ll tell you. Did you know, this AllState initiative grew out of the one which led our members to work at BEARS’ GAME CONCESSIONS last year? Working at the Bears’ games to earn funds for our church was RENEE EDMONSON’S inspiration, I heard. And you know how hearing something can tickle a memory? Renee, Renee, I thought, and then it came to me: LEO ROSETE said, Renee inspired him and his family to join FUMC. ‘The power of one’ – have you heard that phrase? Wow! I like knowing there are other newcomers at FUMC. Like me! Have you met Leo, his wife, TESS and their children, LEVIN and LETHRESE? Leo is sometimes in church after having gotten home from work at 5 a.m. Oh, my gosh. I am in church because I rolled out of my nest at 8:59! By the way, who else comes to your mind when you think of the power of one? For me, it’s God; how about you? Is there any judgment that can equal His? At one of the March LENTEN STUDIES, someone asked PASTOR BRAD what happens to people, believers and non-believers, after death? Have you wondered too? Pastor replied, take a look at ROMANS 2:9-16. Oh. My. Gosh. !!! God’s judgment leaves no-one out, even those who have never even heard of Him. How can it be? Take a look at that passage. If you would like a fuller explanation, ask Pastor Brad, or some of the people who took part in this year’s Lenten studies, like CATHY STEIN, or JACKIE POFAHL. Those Lenten lessons have been eye-openers, and there has been so much sharing among the participants, not just of ideas, but also of experiences, plus the participants have had memorable meals and sampled some very tasty contributions, like LARRY MALONEY’S guacamole. Mmmm. This church is such a welcoming place to be. Many of you attended the farewell for JIM INGRISH, early in March. I was told, Mr. Ingrish was a member of this church for 85 years!!! No wonder the members feel at home at FUMC; it is home. The Sunday after Mr. Ingrish’s memorial service, MIKE MURPHY, DON ANKENY, PASTOR BRAD, LAURA MILLER – and likely a number of others whom I missed -- wore neckties Mrs. Jim (MARGARET) INGRISH had made for her husband, and gave away at this memorial service. Oooh, what a wonderful thing to do. Margaret-and-Jim stories were already flowing, I witnessed, as friends stepped forward to admire the ties being worn. The announcements and prayers portions of the Sunday services, reflect how you care for one another, and the community, on a regular basis, it looks like to me. For example, I noticed announcements like these: CHAR STENSTROM’s husband JIM’s health is stable, HAROLD & LOIS JADERBORG, and JOHN & LINDA KORN have celebrated wedding anniversaries in March, and this one, ELLIE SEEGERS wished her husband, “her darling ARNIE, a happy birthday.” Awww..these are exactly the kinds of news family members share with one another. You all have a really big family! *See more Good News on next page!! Page 9 The Messenger — April 2015 MORE GOOD NEWS FROM GRACIE AT FUMC In the parlor where you gather informally before and after services, I witnessed more happy moments, like the Hello!-So-glad-to-see-you greetings exchanged with JIM BLUE, who returned to church after recovering from a nasty fall, and DAVE DUNCAN, back with us after two months’ hospitalization. Didn’t Dave’s ordeal begin with a fall, too? This winter can’t end soon enough! Also back is MELISSA (don’t you call her ‘MISSY’?) HOLMBERG, one knee repaired, and one to go, in the fall. Missy has a new ‘do’ – take a look; do you recognize her? Speaking of recognizing people, I am at a disadvantage, here, because I am new to FUMC. Almost all of you already recognize one another; I do not. And have you ever forgotten someone’s name? Well, I’ve got a tool to help us all! You know our FUMC WEBSITE? There’s a MEMBERS’ DIRECTORY there, with not only names/addresses of members, but also, in many cases, their pictures!! To find it on your computer, search first for: First United Methodist Church of Des Plaines. You’ll need a user name and password. If you don’t know your user name and password, call Jeanette Frank, our church secretary, at 847.827.5661. At the FUMC website, (www.fumcdp.org) look for ‘ABOUT US’ and scroll down under it to ‘Member Directory.’ You can search this Directory by people’s last names. If you (like me) don’t know someone’s last name, I discovered, you can also search by the pictures of our members, going through the photos there for people whose surnames begin with A, to B, and to C and so on! It takes some time that way, but if you can recognize a face, you can put a name with it! This is how I’ve been able to include the names of those of you whom I do not know yet. So useful! Also therefore, if you haven’t taken a picture for this directory yet, would you consider doing it? To conclude, did you hear JOHN NANKERVIS and ELLIE SEEGERS singing THE LORD’S PRAYER during the March 22 service? People talking about it after the service said it was so moving, and it was. That version of the ‘Our Father,’ puts me in such a good place for giving thanks for my day. It works for beginning a day, too. And if you like something ‘uptempo’? Try CONTEMPORARY CHRISTIAN MUSIC, which we can hear at RADIO STATION, K-Love, at 94.3 on the dial, PASTOR BRAD says. Pastor’s dad had a regular half-hour radio program for the faithful, and one day, he subbed for his dad, playing Christian ‘rock’ for the radio audience. Imagine what an impact that might have made! Maybe you’d like to tune in to 94.3 to hear what it’s like? Tell me how you like it, if you do. How? Like this: write a note, or e-mail what you want to share with me, Gracie, to JEANETTE FRANK, the church secretary, at this address: [email protected] On the subject line, put: For Gracie. Thank you all for sharing your good news; I’m happy to hear from you, and to be here with you at FUMC. Page 10 YOUTH GROUP NEWS!!
