Current Edition of The Waterproofer
The Newsletter of the Waterproofing Contractors Association
President’s Message
David Honeycutt, REI Engineering
Thanks to all of you who made
the spring meeting in Mt. Pleasant
a great success. We had near
record attendance and outstanding
participation
throughout
the
conference. I want to thank all of our
presenters for their time in sharing
their knowledge and information. The
feedback we received was all very
positive.
The Marriott staff, as always went above and beyond our
expectations to provide excellent dining and accommodations
for our WCA family. The Charleston area has always been
a welcome venue for the Spring conference, and we are
looking forward to next Spring.
The 9th Annual Joint WCA/ICRI sporting clays tournament
is scheduled for November 3rd at Drake Landing in beautiful
Fuquay-Varina. Presented by Guaranteed Supply Company
and New South Construction Supply Co., this is a terrific
opportunity for companies to assemble a team of their favorite
clients and best sharpshooters. This year we will be raffling
not one, but two Yeti Tundra coolers!!! There are plenty of
sponsorship opportunities available; all proceeds go to the
scholarship funds of both the WCA and ICRI organizations.
As many of you know the WCA board began the search and
selection process for the new WCA Executive director last
fall. The process has brought to light the core values of the
organization which we hold dear to our hearts and wish to
ensure that they are perpetuated and allowed to grow and
flourish as the organization grows. This process has been
completed and we have our staff team in place to lead us
into the future. Pam Tolson, who has known Kelly and Kit
for 40 years and managed multiple associations, will be our
new Executive Director; Brad Aderhold will continue in his
role as Creative Director, and we even have a commitment
from the Andrews to be at the 2017 and 2018 WCA events.
We are looking forward to transitioning into a new era with a
bright future while preserving the values and ideals that has
shaped us in the past. Pam will be at our Fall meeting to
begin the staff transition.
Surprise, did you know this is the 45th anniversary of the
WCA??!! We are excited about the upcoming fall conference
at the luxurious Grande Dunes Resort in Myrtle Beach, SC.
Please mark your calendars for September 15th through
18th. In addition to the terrific technical presentations we
have in store for you, we are having a special Saturday
night celebration to be held at the House of Blues, and will
feature a delicious down-home barbecue buffet. I would like
to recognize and sincerely thank the following sponsors for
making this event possible: Kenseal Construction Products,
Pecora, Tremco, Nomaco Willseal and W.R. Meadows will
be hosting the House of Blues party and Guaranteed Supply
Company and BASF will provide continuous door-to-door
shuttle service in the GSC trolley and the BASF Party Bus
from 500-1100pm. It’s going to be memorable but your
company needs to be a member of the WCA and you need
to be registered for the conference to be a part of it.

2016 WCA FALL CONVENTION
ROCKIN’ IT OUT: CELEBRATING 45 YEARS OF
BONDING AND SEALING
This will be the beginning of the second decade of the WCA Fall
Convention being held at the Marriott Grande Dunes Resort in North
Myrtle Beach. But since we all know that “familiarity breeds content,”
the WCA Board of Directors along with a some good corporate friends
have decided to kick it up a notch and add a Saturday Night House
of Blues Celebration.
GRANDE DUNES
Annually the Fall Convention is the best attended event of the WCA
and this year should prove to be no exception. Look at this expanded
lin-up of activities:
• On Friday at 11:30 am the Women’s Tea is back on the Veranda.
The WCA ladies can order from the menu, and will have door prizes
and a show of “ Blingo” designer jewelry.
• Friday afternoon will feature your choice of two planned recreational
events (golf back at Arrowhead Country Club and sporting clays will
again be at the Backwoods Quail Club in Georgetown)
• The tradiontal Friday Night Banquet featuring dinner, two free
drinks and the annual Door Prizes Extravaganza and the awarding of
Waterproofer of the Year.
• AND Saturday night we will “party hardy” at a family friendly WCA
Anniversary Celebration at the House of Blues. The 530-730pm
portion is a family buffet in the Indigo Room. At 730pm, we shut down
the Indigo Room and those who want to continue can enjoy drinks,
bar food and live local entertainment free at the Patio Bar overlooking
the Intercoastal Waterway until the bar closes And as a third option,
there will be a national act (TBA) booked into the Concert Hall and
tickets will be available through the House of Blues Box Office.
HOUSE OF BLUES
MOVIN’ ON, WCA
JOIN US FOR OUR 45th ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION
This year completes the 45th year of the WCA’s existence …. sealing leaks and sealing friendships for nearly a half century.
Founded in 1970, the association was run by volunteers until 1986, when Annette Boutwell, the wife of one of the original
founders Jim Boutwell, was hired as the WCA’s first Executive Director. Annette served in that capacity for 14 years through
1999. The WCA’s highest award is the Jim and Annette Boutwell Award, named in their honor. When
warranted through dedication and significant contributions, the Waterproofing Contractors Association
presents this award to a deserving individual who has contributed a great deal to the Association at
present and in the past.
This upcoming Fall Convention is the 16th year Kelly (and his wife Kit) Andrews have served us
as a management team. We thought we were hiring Kelly but we got a real bonus in Kit. This Fall
Convention marks the last one for them in an official capacity as our lead staff; they are going to be
retiring to spend more time with their son and daughter and their four
grandkids. And while this will be their last official meeting as staff, we
have a commitment from them to come back for the next few years as
“staff emeritus” in charge of Door Prize Procurement.
And we are happy to announce the hiring of Pam Tolson as our new Executive Director. Pam will
officially begin her first year as the new WCA Executive Director effective January, 2017. Pam is
a personal friend and professional colleague of Kelly and Kit Andrews, having worked with Kelly
at American Heart Association and the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, as well as partnering with him
in a successful bid to manage the Raleigh Bicentennial.
Pam is an association executive and small business owner. She has
had the privilege to work in association management her entire career.
Prior to discovering membership organizations, Pam was a fund raiser and event manager for local,
state and national health organizations. She founded MRSI, an association management company,
in 1992 upon returning to Springfield, Illinois after eight years working in the Washington, DC metro
area. She recently stepped down as Executive Director for the Illinois Society of Association Executives
after 20 years of service. In 2010, Pam merged her management company with Association Central
in Springfield, Illinois and continues to work with the new company.
For over 30 years Pam has worked with hundreds of volunteers and many boards of directors. She
has a degree in Business Management from St. Mary-of-the-Woods College in Indiana and received
herCertified Association Executive designation from ASAE in 1997. When not working, you can find
Pam sailing or kayaking on the Potomac River near her home in Colonial Beach, Virginia.
