THE OFFICIAL PUBLICATION OF BRAND LICENSING EUROPE SHOW DAILY 18 OCTOBER 2011 DaY 1 Biggest Brand Showcase Good morning! Welcome to Brand Licensing Europe 2011. Brand Licensing Europe is bigger yet again. There are 250 exhibitors on the show floor with more than 5,000 retailers, licensees and visitors from 60 countries expected to attend. The biggest names in the business are here such as Disney, Lucasfilm, Sony and Universal. Television represents with strong new propositions from BBC Worldwide, Nickelodeon and Cartoon Network. From DCD Publishing’s innovative licensing to Live Nation’s signing of Led Zeppelin, this is a year for music brands as well. Digital brands are breaking out too and appearing on shelf in a significant way. It’s also a thrilling year for pre-school, sports brands and the film screening suite is full. The line up in The Licensing Academy includes today’s keynote address from Moshi Monsters’ creator, Michael Acton Smith. Wednesday’s The Big Interview is with Howard Roffman, president of Lucas Licensing, and Thursday is the finale of License This!, a licensing challenge. Enjoy! Character Options Takes on BBC’s Deadly 60 Today, BBC Worldwide has announced that Character Options will spearhead the licensing programme in the UK for “Deadly 60,” the CBBC show with Steve Backshall. “Deadly 60” has fast become one of BBC’s priority brands. A full licensing programme is now underway with the first product set to hit retail for Christmas 2011. A micro-figure range, called micro deadlies, will hit retail in spring 2012. “The animal kingdom is highlighted in a dramatic way in every ‘Deadly 60’ episode and we will replicate this excitement in our range of construction animals and wildlife environments,” says Jon Diver, managing director, Character Options. “Deadly 60 will become an exciting addition to our portfolio of licensed construction figures and play sets. We plan to expand the range with action figures, deluxe play sets and role play items.” Breaking newS Beanstalk Signs Beatrix Ong Beanstalk has signed a global representation agreement with luxury accessories designer Beatrix Ong. Despite the economic conditions, retailers have a strong appetite for the things that are new and fresh and a true understanding of what consumers want during the next few seasons. It seems that the climate is shifting from a desire for “the hottest thing” to “the property that suits us best.” Sam Phillips If you’re a brand owner, this means that the next European Editor three days provide the perfect opportunity to make the case for your brand to specific retail visitors. If you’re a visitor, there are many strong brands to choose from and you’ll see a number of interesting trends coming through on the show floor this year. Everybody is still looking for girls’ properties, so the industry is responding in force. There is also a proliferation of cooking, baking and dining brands. But one trend we won’t be able to ignore at this Brand Licensing Europe is “Brand Britain.” The Union flag has enjoyed a starring role in fashion and interiors for a few years but “Brand Britain” will reach unprecedented visibility next year thanks to the London 2012 Olympics and the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee falling within a few months of each other. Brands and characters are responding to the celebratory mood. Aardman Rights has a “Best of British” style guide for Wallace & Gromit, for example, and the NMSI is offering a “Best of Britain” selection of imagery from its archive of Railway Museum posters. DCD Publishing revealed to License! Global that the Spandau Ballet song “Gold” is attracting unseasonable interest ahead of next year. Live Nation expects keenness for British band the Sex Pistols, and V&A Licensing is promoting opportunities associated with the V&A exhibition “British Design 1948–2012.” A current billboard campaign for London 2012, which shows lots of licensed products, is an overt–if tongue in cheek–call to action to buy “stuff.” So don’t be shy. The festivities won’t last forever. Smile and get out your flags! 641 Lexington Ave., 8th Fl. The new signings include GB Eye with a pan-European deal for badges, gift wrap, postcards, stickers, key chains and greeting cards launching next year, and IMC, whose products include a recording musical microphone, a life-size guitar and keyboard, a dancing mat and a jewellery box launching across France, Italy, Portugal, Spain and the UK beginning the second half of 2012. In the UK, 15 licensees are now on board. New agreements signed include Blues Clothing, Brands International Fashion, Blueprint and VMC Accessories. Flair will offer temporary body art and Sert-MST will create health and beauty items. The apparel lines will be in store for spring/summer 2012 with the remainder of categories in store for back-to-school 2012. “‘Victorious’ has been well Mark Kingston received by UK viewers in 2011 so it’s fantastic to see the property is now resonating with licensees, too,” says Mark Kingston, vice president, UK, Australia and European retail development for NCP. “Having major deals in place is testament to the strength of this property which will continue to capture the hearts of tweens and teens into 2012.” Keynote: Moshi Monster’s Michael Acton Smith Michael Acton Smith, creator of Moshi Monsters and chief executive officer of Mind Candy, hardly needs an introduction. The Moshi Monsters game now has over 50 million users and Moshi TV, Moshi music and Moshi merchandise are evolving. This keynote address is the first time Acton Smith has talked specifically to the licensing industry about the Moshi Monsters phenomenon and its implications for Michael Acton Smith the licensing business. Moshi Monsters is the first property created for children of the digital age and is now breaking out of its online home. Global retail sales of Moshi Monsters licensed products are expected to reach over $100 million in its first year. In what promises to be a frank and entertaining keynote address, Acton Smith will share the colourful story of Moshi Monsters so far and offer his unique insight into building a brand for a new digital generation of kids and shaking up the licensing industry for a new digital age. The Keynote takes place in the Licensing Academy’s London room at 1 p.m. Universal Eyeing Deals for Despicable Me 2 At Brand Licensing Europe, Universal Partnerships and Licensing is championing its summer 2013 release Despicable Me 2. The film is the follow up to the animated feature about super-villain Gru, his girls and his army of Minions, which opened last year and grossed $540 million worldwide. The first film boasted 20 licensing partners including Best Buy and IHOP in the US. The licensing and marketing programme for the second film will centre on the charming Minions, the break out stars of the original film and the original consumer products campaign. UP&L 14 www.licensemag.com 18 October 2011 would like to have all major categories covered. The emphasis will be on bringing innovation to products in the form of technology or packaging. No master toy partner was in place for the first film but UP&L is open to conversations with partners this time around. UP&L thinks the Despicable Me property has the potential to build into a 10-year or more franchise. UP&L will also be at show to discuss Snow White and the Huntsman (summer 2012), a breathtaking new vision of the legendary tale from Joe Roth, the producer of Alice in Wonderland. In the film, Kristen Stewart plays the only person in the land fairer than the evil queen who is out to destroy her. But what the wicked ruler never imagined is that the one girl threatening her reign has been training in the art of war with a huntsman (Chris Hemsworth) that was dispatched to kill her. bizbriefs Alphanim to Introduce New CGI ‘Calimero’ TF1 and Alphanim are developing a new CGI animated series, “Calimero,” based on the character created in 1963 by Pagot. Through the new series, children will discover the adventures of lil’ black chick Calimero and his friends Priscilla and Valeriano. Delivery is scheduled for the brand’s 50th anniversary in 2013. Alphanim will distribute the programme and manage the brand internationally on behalf of Calidra, the rights owner. TF1 Licences has been appointed as the agent for France, while TF1 Vidéo has acquired video rights to the future series. You can find Alphanim at the F2D2 stand. TLC, Coca-Cola Pair Up for London 2012 The Licensing Company’s representation of CocaCola takes an interesting turn this year. Coca-Cola has been sponsoring the Olympics since 1928 but for the first time it will launch a co-branded Olympic merchandise collection for London 2012. The range will launch to the general marketplace in early 2012 in targeted countries around the world. In addition to Coca-Cola’s licensing initiative, the company will develop co-branded sports related products with Powerade. To create a point of difference at retail, special style guides have been developed for both programmes. Hasbro Puts its Might Behind ‘Core Four’ Brands at BLE At Brand Licensing Europe this year, Hasbro will focus on its “core four” brands– My Little Pony, Transformers, Nerf and Littlest Pet Shop. Hasbro is featuring the core four brands at Brand Licensing Europe registration as well. As Hasbro makes the transition from a traditional toy and game company to an entertainment company, it plans to 16 www.licensemag.com 18 October 2011 maximise the potential of its own brands. It will also ramp up the quality and design of products. “From next year you will see a stepchange in our execution at retail with product at a new level of quality and creative,” says James Walker, vice president of brand licensing, Hasbro Europe. “BLE is the chance to show retailers what we’re doing in this respect.” Apparel and publishing are priorities for the core four brands and Walker emphasises Hasbro’s ability to support events at retail, exemplified by recent successful cross category campaigns for Transformers 3 at Tesco and My Little Pony at Carrefour. For My Little Pony (which also has a new TV series on-air in Europe), Hasbro aims to achieve scale quickly by working with top partners in each market before building out its long term plans. Littlest Pet Shop has a TV series coming in 2012-13. Nerf, a non-TV brand, is targeted towards 12-18-year-old-boys and Hasbro will shortly announce its first apparel partner. bizbriefs Tour de France 2012: Route Announced Cop Corp’s Barcode Kitties Get Three ‘Mew’ European Deals The official presentation of the Tour de France 2012 route is taking place this morning, the first day of Brand Licensing Europe. The first is The Pirates! Band of Misfits starring the voice of Hugh Grant in his first animated role as the luxuriantly bearded Pirate Captain, a boundlessly enthusiastic– if unsuccessful–terror of the high seas. The Captain has one dream: to beat his bitter rivals Black Bellamy and Cutlass Liz to the Pirate of the Year Award. It’s a quest that moves from the shores of Blood Island to the foggy streets of Victorian London. Made in stop motion/claymation, the film boasts top UK talent and is out March 2012. Sony Consumer Products holds worldwide licensing and promotions (excluding UK licensing). The second film is Hotel Transylvania. Over-protective of his teenage daughter Mavis, Dracula opens the Hotel Transylvania, a lavish “five-stake” resort where monsters and their families can relax in safety and peace. The adventures start when one ordinary guy stumbles on the hotel and takes a shine to Mavis. Made in CG, the international release is scheduled for late 2012 and Sony Consumer Products has worldwide licensing and promotion rights. For Men in Black 3 (releasing May 2012), Sony has developed an exclusive range of products in partnership with a single retailer, a model it hopes to repeat for other film releases next year. “What we’ve learned is to get the retailer interested in the film at a senior level, and then consult the buyers about what they are buying, what the trends are and what events they are planning,” says Gregory Economos, senior vice president of global consumer products for Sony Consumer Products. 18 October 2011 www.licensemag.com 21 bizbriefs Beanstalk Snaps Up Rights for MovieStarPlanet Virtual World Beanstalk has signed a global representation agreement with the online digital property MovieStarPlanet. Beanstalk will be speaking to potential licensing partners at Brand Licensing Europe about a wide range of lifestyle products for tweens including apparel, accessories and toys. MovieStarPlanet is one of the world’s fastest growing online gaming and community sites for tweens. Children participate in a virtual world with a personalized avatar and work together with their friends to create small animated cartoons while also “living” their lives on MovieStarPlanet where they can shop, adopt pets, play games and plenty of other entertaining activities. MovieStarPlanet is headquartered in Denmark and privately owned and launched in mid-2009. It is now marketed in nine European countries as well as the US. It is Beanstalk’s second digital brand signing– the agency also represents Talking Friends. Monster High ‘Ghouls’ Bikes Coming Soon BRB Internacional Shows Dibo the Gift Dragon at BLE A range of bikes and scooters for Mattel’s edgy girls’ brand Monster High is being produced by Chi-Tech Industries. “Monster High is now an established girls’ franchise, having launched successful licensed products in a number of consumer categories,” says Marianna Helmer-Gregersen, licensing manager for Mattel. “Chi-Tech’s Monster High range of bikes and scooters brings a fresh aesthetic to the category, with designs for ‘ghouls’ who like an edgier style.” The bikes will hit retail in spring 2012. The property Dibo the Gift Dragon is introduced by BRB Internacional this week at Brand Licensing Europe. “Dibo the Gift Dragon” is an original cartoon series with a musical flavour and rag-doll styling. The main character, Dibo, is a dragon with a huge belly to store all the best presents in the whole world. His is a universe where dreams can come true–all you have to do is ask. BRB Internacional manages the rights for the property in Spain and Portugal and will present the first textile products, homewares, educational kits, toys and paper products for the brand at its stand. “Dibo the Gift Dragon” airs in Spain this December on the public children’s channel Clan. 22 www.licensemag.com 18 October 2011 bizbriefs Led Zeppelin, Sex Pistols Headline for Live Nation Live Nation exhibits at Brand Licensing Europe for the first time this year with its roster of some of the biggest bands, acts and stars on the planet including U2, Madonna, Aerosmith, Coldplay, Jay-Z and the newly signed Led Zeppelin. “We are seeing significant growth in retail appetite for music merchandise across Europe now, particularly in emerging markets and in Italy, Scandinavia, France and the UK,” says Michael Krassner, executive vice president, Live Nation. Krassner hopes meeting European retailers and licensees at show will encourage partners to go deeper into the portfolio and build out existing music merchandise programmes into new products, new territories and new categories such as high-end apparel (a recent project in Italy with Madonna was very successful) or to create programmes across a number of different groups. Krassner thinks there will be a special interest in British icons such as the Sex Pistols during the Diamond Jubilee and Olympics year next year. He says the power of ACDC across Europe is “startling” and that with Nirvana there are “some big opportunities to explore following a successful recent shirt deal with H&M.” Madonna always generates interest, particularly the classic imagery of the star, and Krassner is expecting strong interest in new signing, Led Zeppelin. Krassner is fond of saying that with every birth comes a new fan of pop music. “Pop culture is very powerful,” he says. “Pop music takes twists and turns that we can’t predict but it’s always there with its foundation in the music that came out of the 60s.” At the Live Nation stand there will be posters of its major clients and a selection of merchandise produced and licensed by Live Nation. TCNE to Battle for ‘Redakai’ in EMEA Tiësto’s Club Life Fashion Brand Launches at BLE Turner CN Enterprises has been appointed the exclusive licensing agent for “Redakai,” the new Zodiak Kids and Spin Master boys’ action series. TCNE will represent “Redakai” across EMEA excluding France where Zodiak Kids will manage the property. “Redakai” stars Ky, a 15-year-old student of ancient martial arts who embarks on a quest to find the Kairu, a primordial alien energy force. Helped by his friends Maya and Boomer, Ky travels the globe looking for the “Kairu” to protect it from his extraterrestrial teenage opponents, with the hope that one day he will become the greatest Kairu warrior of them all–a Redakai. The “Redakai” TV series will air across most of Europe in the first quarter 2012 (it launched on Cartoon Network in the US in July) just before Spin Master launches its revolutionary Redakai toy line, which features 3D effects in trading cards, a first in this genre. “Redakai is fast becoming a must-have brand for boys and TCNE is the ideal partner to act as our EMEA licensing agent,” says Patricia De Wilde, senior vice president of Zodiak Kids Consumer Products, France. “Its track record in the boys’ market makes it perfectly placed to take Redakai to the next level following its North American success on television and as a master toy range.” Tiësto, the world’s number one DJ, is present at Brand Licensing Europe for the first time this year courtesy of The Movement International, which manages the Tiësto licensing business. Tiësto is the first major DJ to launch a fully realized fashion brand. The Club Life brand is intended to grow internationally with products in categories such as apparel, accessories, shoes, fragrance, leather goods and home décor. Tiësto’s famous bird in a circle logo has been developed into different treatments and there are a number of graphics and original photography available for use. “Tiësto is one of the most interconnected entertainers,” says Martin Cribbs of The Movement International. “His presence is felt via social media touch-points, which is an excellent and authentic way to communicate with his fans as new Club Life customers.” A limited edition release of apparel is planned for late 2011, with further releases scheduled for spring 2012 and with a full roll out for autumn/winter 2012. The Movement International is working with UK consultant Jane Evans and has a list of target licensees in apparel, footwear and social expressions. Sales have declined since last year but the figures reveal some interesting good news for the industry. The share of licensed products in proportion to the overall spend has gone up from 19.4 percent to 20.6 percent with particular uplift in accessories, greeting cards, health and beauty products and DVDs. Licensed sales represent 20.6 percent of the overall spend on children of that age. Licensing is also linked to special occasions. “Unlike some other kids’ markets the licensed market is linked to pleasure and treats,” says NPD’s European analyst Frederique Tutt. “The figures show that for a treat or a reward, for a birthday, for Easter, Christmas or Halloween, the item purchased is 50 percent more likely to be licensed than with an item bought for no special occasion or for back-to-school.” NPD’s data also indicates that promotions played a more important role in the licensed market this year than last year, increasing from 29.1 percent to 30.7 percent Frederique Tutt, NPD Group of all licensed sales, particularly online. “Licensed sales to children have likely been affected by the economy in common with the rest of retail,” says Tutt. “Parents do like to please their children but they are still tightening their belts. Toys remain the largest opportunity for licensing with almost 25 percent of the turnover for the first half 2011.” * Each day in the Show Dailies, Frederique Tutt, NPD’s European analyst, brings us an exclusive piece of industry research. Beanstalk Secures Two New Deals for Talking Friends The Talking Friends licensing programme, managed across Europe, Asia and the US by Beanstalk, is out of the gate at an impressive pace. The agency has confirmed two partners for the digital game brand and will announce more this week at Brand Licensing Europe. For the UK market, Fine Makers will produce giftware for fall/winter 2011. Fine Makers specialises in poly-resin products and the Talking Friends line will range from pet accessories to collectible figurines. In Asia, Beanstalk has appointed Letao, which will launch footwear for fall/winter 2011. Talking Friends was created by Outfit 7 and is a game for smartphones and tablets featuring characters such as Talking Tom the Cat, Talking Gina the Giraffe and Talking Ben the Dog. Talking Friends has achieved 150 million downloads since game launch and has secured global brand recognition very quickly. “Digital brands develop at a more accelerated pace than traditional brands,” says Ciaran Coyle, managing director for Beanstalk. “The level of engagement with each character means the consumer is in control and telling you what they like and don’t like. The challenge for us is in taking a digital property and giving it physical elements, but with the sort of speed to market that digital brands demand.” 26 www.licensemag.com 18 October 2011 Julius Leads Saban’s International Expansion Saban Brands comes to Brand Licensing Europe this year with a focus on the international expansion of its Paul Frank brand.
