Bimmer Brake & Brew
returns for Nov. 3 tour

Remember? It's no longer called Novemberfest! The Bimmer Brake and Brew is our
annual drive to some of the finest brewing destinations central Virginia has to offer.
This year we'll be hitting up Albemarle CiderWorks, the
Blue Mountain Barrel House, and possibly a third stop
on our scenic back roads cruise through the counties of Register online by Oct. 27
or RSVP to Brad at
Albemarle and Nelson.

We'll begin on Sunday, November 3rd, at 10am. The
meeting point will be the parking lot at the entrance to
Piedmont Valley Community College just south of Charlottesville on highway 20.
From there we will find a fun way to wind over to Albemarle CiderWorks in North Garden for a sampling of their finest cider d'pomme. When we arrive at Blue Mountain
Barrel House, a catered lunch and bourbon barrel aged beers will greet us. At press
time, a potential third stop on the tour had not yet been finalized, but it will be somewhere in the southern Albemarle/Nelson area.

We are all set for our 6th TireRack Teen Street Survival. All student slots are currently
filled but if you'd like to get on the last minute waiting list or volunteer to help during
the event, please e-mail [email protected].
We will be starting bright and early on Saturday, October 26th at Richmond International Raceway. Thirty young drivers will have their lives, and hopefully their driving habits, changed for the better. If you have a new driver in your family please
consider enrolling them in our next Street Survival or find another event in the VA area
by visiting StreetSurvival.org. Thank you to all our members who donated throughout
the year to help with costs for the event. I can't think of a better charity program!

The air is crisp, the leaves are changing colors, it’s
fall in Central Virginia. There may not be a better
time to take a backroads drive through our region.
I’m looking forward to the Bimmer Brake and
Brew tour coming up on Nov. 3. Among the stops
will be Albemarle Ciderworks for what I think is
some of the best hard cider out there. The Shelton
family has been growing apples for a long time,
focusing on older varietals. Those apples bring a
complexity to the ciders that sets them apart from
more commercial ones. We’ll also be visiting Blue
Mountain’s Barrel House for brew samples and a
catered lunch. See page 1 for details and the link
to register online. I hope you’ll come out and join
us for the day!

Raleigh’s NC Museum of Art offers
Porsche by Design: Seducing Speed
Porsche by Design: Seducing Speed marks the North Carolina Museum of
Art's first design exhibition, exploring the history and development of the
Porsche lineage from the 1930s to the present day.
Featuring 22 automobiles, Porsche by Design presents cars owned by
Ralph Lauren, Steve McQueen, and Janis Joplin, as well as the one-of-akind Panamericana concept car on loan from the Porsche Museum in
Stuttgart, Germany.
Car lovers will appreciate the rarity and engineering genius of the automobiles on view. Art lovers will be intrigued by Porsche design and the connections that can be drawn with other works of art. All will gain a deep
appreciation for hallmarks of the Porsche make: beauty, artistry, technology, and innovation.
The exhibit runs through January 20, 2014. A number of special events,
including trivia night, design your own car workshop, and an art car
meetup, are planned in conjunction with the exhibit. For more information

It was a beautiful
day for a picnic
Crack (aka Saltine Candy)
70–80 saltines
1/2 cup sugar
1 cup butter (two sticks)
12-oz bag chocolate chips
Line a medium-sized cookie sheet with aluminum foil (the nonstick foil works great!).
Place one layer of saltines (35–40 crackers) in
the pan. Preheat oven to 350°. Melt the butter (I
use 1 stick each of salted and unsalted), sugar,
and a splash of vanilla in a saucepan. Bring to
a boil, stirring occasionally. Boil without stirring
for 3 minutes. Pour over saltines and spread
evenly. Place second layer of saltines on top.
Bake for 5 minutes (don’t overbake!). Sprinkle
chips over top and return to oven for about 1
minute to soften chips. Spread chips over
crackers. Chill until firm. Lift foil out of pan and
peel off. “Crack” the candy into chunks and
watch it disappear!

The weather couldn’t have been more perfect for the 2013 Annual
Picnic on Aug. 11 at Darden Towe Park in Charlottesville. We had
a healthy turnout to enjoy the fine fare from Hamdinger’s, the
cornhole games, and the desserts shared by our chapter members.
Among the fan favorites are always the “crack” and Brenda
Thomasson’s coconut brownies. So to help you feed your sweet
tooth between now and next summer, the recipes for both can be
found to the right. Also a big hit again this year was the scavenger
hunt put together by picinic coordinator Steve Cunningham.
Adults and kids alike scurried around the park to find assorted
items from cars and grounds. Special thanks to Paul Muskopf and
Moosehead Engineering for the scavenger hunt prizes.
Brenda’s Coconut Brownies
In a 13 x 9 glass pan:
1st layer
1 stick of melted butter
1 box yellow cake mix
1 egg
Mix well and press to all sides of the
pan.
2nd layer
I do not measure these items just
cover 1st layer with coconut and
chopped pecans.
3rd layer
In a mixing bowl beat with electric
mixer the following:
1 8-oz pkg. softened cream cheese (I
use the light)
2 eggs
4 cups powdered sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla
Pour over the 2nd layer.
Bake at 350 degrees for 45 minutes.
Let completely cool overnight before
cutting.

Chapter seeking new President as
Brad Day prepares to step down
years to come and many of you are full of great ideas for drives and
social events! I know several of you out there have what it takes
to keep the wheels turning. And you wouldn't be steering alone.
I've made many great friends and mentors along the way who
helped me design rally routes and plan events. Folks who've been
with the club since the early days and newbies who just bought
their first BMW. Folks like Steve and Lisa, Frank, Dennis, Nick
and, of course Byron and Sueann who have all worked behind the
scenes for years making this club what it is. We're all here to help.
But now it's time for me to move back behind the scenes. I will
still be running the chapter website and facebook page, contributing articles to the newsletter and heading up a drive or two
throughout the year.
I encourage anyone who is interested in becoming a chapter
officer or filling the soon to be vacant president role to contact me
or any of our current chapter officers. No experience is required
and the only prerequisite is that you love hanging out with fun
people and their BMWs. Trust me, if I can handle it, anyone can!
Thank you so much for the many years of fun and I will see you at
the next event.

Well my BMW friends, I think the time has come for me to switch
seats and let someone else drive for a while. For the past 3 years
you have let me come up with wacky rally routes, spend money
bringing Roundel columnists down to visit from Massachusetts
and generally have a great time with a bunch of other BMW fanatics. To me this club is about having a blast and enjoying our fabulous cars. Unfortunately, life has been getting in the way of my
ability to plan for automotive fun over the last year. I've been traveling quite a bit with my job with no end in sight. My travel schedule has kept me from being able to plan outings very far in advance
and our event calendar has suffered for it. I just don't feel I can
provide the event planning leadership that is required of me so I
will be stepping down as president in early 2014.
I've had a great time over these 3 years as chapter president (and
5 years as secretary before that). But now it's time to pass the
wheel to a new captain. Fresh eyes and a new perspective are
needed if we're going to keep our chapter growing and viable for

probably the nicest VW Rabbit GTI in North America (38,000
miles on the clock), as well as a Chrysler TC by Maserati. When is
the last time you saw one of those?
Show entries included five BMWs, with coupes and sedans from
1971 to 1991 represented. While our turnout was small, the cars
were all top-notch and received many compliments from the
crowd. But there can only be one winner and when the votes were
counted the entrants’ favorite BMW was a 1971 3.0 CSi entered by
Blue Ridge Chapter member Dennis Topper. Entrants have good
taste in BMWs because Dennis’s car is stunning. Other Chapter
entries were a 1980 635CSi (Donald Elliott), a 1983 320i (Dave
Sanders), and a 1991 850i (Linwood Mingis). A 1976 3.0 Si
rounded out the field.
Next year’s event will be held on 13-14 September and the featured marque will be Ferrari. Be sure to “save the date” and have
your BMW ready for a great weekend, of cars, music, and wine.

The Central Virginia British Car Club’s 29th Annual Classics on
the Green European Automobile Festival was held on 14-15 September at the New Kent Winery in New Kent County, Virginia.
What makes CVBCC’s event different from those put on by most
British car clubs is that they allow, as the name suggests, European
cars. While there was no shortage of MGs, Triumphs, and Jaguars;
this year German cars were out in force. Mercedes Benz was the
featured marque and there was a special celebration of the Porsche
911 for its 50th birthday. BMW and VW were also well represented.
Classics on the Green is more than a car show and you don’t
have to be a gear head to enjoy the event. Other events on Saturday include a fun rally/tour, and a happy hour and a dinner party
at the host hotel. In addition to the nearly 300 cars on display, on
Sunday there is live music, a silent auction, and wine tasting with
wines from four local wineries.
This is not a concours so you can leave your
Q Tips at home. The entrants are the judges
and vote for their favorite car in each class.
My vote for the best MGA was one that hit a
deer the night before; the owner deserved a
vote for having the determination to bring a
mangled car to the show and proudly displayed the broken parts on top of the bonnet.

ALMS Oak Tree Grand Prix at VIR
ing and exciting. P1 class are prototype cars, high horsepower and
very fast on the straight sections. GT are production cars with limited modifications sharing design similarities with showroom
vehicles. This class includes Aston Martin Vantage, BMW Z4GT,
Corvette C6.R, Ferrari 458 Italia, Lotus Evora, and Porsche
911GT3 RSR. P2 Class is a smaller and less powerful version of
their P1 counterparts. GT Challenge Class features three specifications of Porsche’s 911GT3 Cup car. As in GT class, the Porsche
911GT3 Cup car is based on the road-going Porsche 911GT3 RS.
The P1 Muscle Milk sponsored car ran away from the field,
stayed in front, and finished first. For BMW, Team RLL (Rayhall/Letterman) finished in 4th and 5th places behind a Ferrari,
Porsche, and Corvette. Near the end of the race, there was a spectacular crash that was broadcast on the news of a Porsche 911 GT3
going airborne and landing on stacks of tires right next to a camera man who dusts himself off, checks on the driver, and continues
filming. The race will be broadcast on October 19th on Fox at
11AM and again at 4 PM on October 20th.
VIR plans to resurface the entire track and widen it in spots as
well as re-paving the Paddock Area over the winter months. They
have also sent tissue samples to
several
locations with the
goal of cloning
the famous oak
tree and planting a replacement, though in
a fan area outside the track.

The American LeMans Series race was held at VIR Racetrack Saturday, Oct. 12. VIR is in the community of Alton, near Danville, VA
and the Dan River. It’s about a 2½ hour drive from Richmond.
The Oak Tree , a 200 year old specimen, has stood inside the southern-most turn providing a visual landmark for drivers on the
track. Unfortunately, the oak toppled over during the past winter
and participants were provided with a slice from the tree to add to
their keychain.
This season’s primary sponsor is Tequila Patron and although
they were prevented from having the portable bar and tequila
shots provided at earlier races (some said by the Virginia ABC, others said by the ALMS race commission), they do have two cars in
the competition. Not surprisingly, VIR proved to be a great venue
for the race. For those not familiar with the track, fan parking,
camping, concessions, vendor tents, and driver team trucks are all
inside the track and very fan accessible. We packed a picnic and
folding chairs, brought a cooler and cigars. VIR has some
hotel/condo spots available but we chose to stay nearby for greater
room selection as well as restaurants. There was a BMW Corral
hosted by the Tarheel and National Capital Chapters that provided
a catered lunch and tent overlooking the lower “s”turn sequence
along with other benefits. While we chose not to utilize the Corral,
we ended up parking across the access road from the group and
saw a few of our members during the race. Although the temperature was reasonable and there was often a breeze, the sun was
warm and made seeking the shade desirable.
For anyone not familiar with the ALMS Race Series, there are 4
car classes running at the same time with different power/weight
specifications and requirements making the race always challeng-

Road racing still lives at Watkins Glen

Watkins Glen, New York is considered by many to be the site of
the re-birth of post-war sports car racing in the U.S. Resident
Cameron Argetsinger, who had money, influence, and a new MG
TC he wanted to race, was able to convince the town’s officials
that a sports car race on nearby public roads and through downtown Watkins Glen was a good idea and would benefit the town.
They agreed and the first race was held in 1948. Racing on the
streets continued until 1952 when the town shut it down due to
safety concerns: hay bales made lousy guardrails but were a convenient place to sit and the results were tragic when a car spun
out of control.
It’s been more than 60 years since the race cars roared down
Franklin Street, the main street through town, but the glory days
of road racing are recreated each year with the Watkins Glen
Grand Prix Festival; held on the first weekend after Labor Day.
Each year there is a featured marque; this year it was the Mini, but
both BMC Minis and BMW MINIs were recognized. While vintage races, held at the Watkins Glen International (WGI) permanent circuit, are the main attraction, what sets the Festival apart
from other vintage races is that you don’t have to race a vintage car
to participate. The Festival allows spectators to become a part of
the action by participating in one of several rallies or car shows.
This year some 1,200 people took part in one of these events.
What makes these events so popular is that after they’re over
each group takes two laps around the old 6.6 mile road course.

Franklin Street is closed to traffic and lined with spectators cheering on the cars as they head down what used to be the main
straight and start/finish line. Then, after all the street cars take
their laps, the entire course is closed to traffic and unmuffled race
cars, which are driven from WGI to town, take the final two.

You’ve really got to admire a town that allows racecars to be
driven on public highways, but I suspect the amount of money
pumped into the local economy might have something to do
with the decision.
This year my wife Doris and I participated in the Glenora Run,
the oldest rally in the Festival. Limited to 130 cars at least 25
years old, it is the oldest and most popular rally and fills up
quickly, usually by October of the previous year. Sponsored by
Glenora Wine Cellars, the rally starts with a continental breakfast
buffet at the vineyard, includes lunch, and as a bonus each
entrant gets a commemorative bottle of wine. Our 1983 320i was
one of the newer cars, but a 1985 635CSi (the only other BMW)
squeaked by with only three years to spare.
If you enjoy vintage racing but are not content with merely
being a spectator and want to participate in a great event, the
Watkins Glen Grand Prix Festival is one you will not want to
miss.

If you’d like to borrow a tool, contact Paul and

Most BMW and MINI owners are very good about changing their
engine’s air filter, but they rarely change the cabin air microfilter.
(If your response is, “I didn’t even know my BMW had a cabin air
microfilter,” you’re not alone.) The size and shape of these filters
vary widely from model to model, as does the step-by-step procedure for changing them.

BMW and MINI recommend that these filters be changed every
15,000 miles (down from 30,000 originally). Otto recommends
once per year or more often if the vehicle is used in “dirty air”
areas. A 6-month inspection of the filter will reveal where the
actual change interval should be. Once you install the new microfilter, you’ll notice that the car smells fresher and the AC works

BMW is performing a recall on various 5 series models from
model years 2008 through 2010. The electrical plug connection
for the tail lights may loosen and cause increased resistance,
resulting in a loss of running, brake, reverse and/or turn signal
lights. The repair is to replace the bulb carrier assemblies.

During our Oktoberfest celebration, the BMW CCA Foundation
launched a new capital campaign, a fund-raising effort that benefits the entire BMW CCA community. Its goals are simple: double
