MODINE “DONUT™” ENGINE OIL COOLER
MODINE “DONUT™” ENGINE OIL COOLER
“Lo-Profile” design offers compact styling and more
efficient water cooling of engine lube oil.
WIDE RANGE OF APPLICATIONS
Modine’s “DONUT™”, water-cooled engine oil cooler is
engineered to reduce the high oil temperatures encountered in
today’s high performance diesel and gasoline engines. Typical
applications include cats, trucks and vans, agriculture,
construction and industrial equipment. It can be used alone or
can replace or supplement existing coolers, and because the
cooler’s design permits its installation at the oil filter location of
most engines, additional oil lines and complicated water
manifolds are unnecessary. Its “Lo-Profile” design makes it
especially ideal for under-hood applications where space
limitations are critical.
While designed primarily as an engine lube oil cooler, the
‘DONUT” may also be used on hydraulic systems and
transmission where heat loads are not extreme.
COMPACT SIZE, SAME HIGH PERFORMANCE
The Lo-Profile “DONUT’ is a reduced height & lighter weight
cooler offering oil cooling performance equivalent to the
standard “DONUT.’
EASY TO INSTALL
The “DONUT™” oil cooler is easily installed on most engines at the
oil filter location using the threaded connector supplied with the
cooler. The unique design of this cooler negates the need for
extraneous high-pressure oil hose lines that could fail and thereby
cause extensive engine damage. A gasket similar to the oil filter
gasket is provided to affect the seal between the cooler and the engine.
The coolant side hook-up is also easily made by connecting a hose
from the high pressure side of the cooling system to the cooler and
then returning the other hose to the low pressure side of the cooling
system. Replacing the oil filter atop the cooler in “piggy-back”
fashion completes the installation.
SIMPLE OPERATION - RELIABLE PERFORMANCE
Hot oil from the engine enters the cooler, flows in parallel through the
interconnected plates and finally exits the cooler to flow through the
oil filter. After filtration, the oil returns to the engine by way of the
connector in the center of the cooler. The coolant enters the coolant
jacket, circulates around the oil filled plates extracting heat and is then
returned to the engine cooling system.
Extracting heat from the oil by using coolant from the engine
cooling system, the cooler lowers oil temperature to extend
lubricating qualities, which in turn results in reduced engine
wear, as well as less frequent oil changes.
A pressure relief valve in the cooler allows oil to bypass the cooling
plates under extreme operating conditions, such as cold starts,
excessive oil flow and/or pressure drops, so that a continuous supply
of oil to the engine is maintained.
RUGGED CONSTRUCTION
The Lo-Profile “DONUT’ oil cooler can withstand sustained cyclic
pressures up to 200 PSI on the oil side and 40 PSI on the water side,
more than ample to meet conditions prevailing on most engines.
MEANS ULTIMATE STRENGTH
Careful consideration has been give to the severe conditions and
under-hood environment in which this cooler will be used;
therefore, we have made extensive use of stainless steel to
provide corrosion protection for long cooler life while copper
brazing has been used throughout for maximum strength to
withstand the oil side pressure spikes encountered under severe
operating conditions. The coolant jacket can easily cope with
the higher coolant system operating pressures of today’s high
performance engines.
CUSTOMIZING THE “DONUT™”
The standard line of Lo-Profile oil cooler models can be expanded
through the use of certain customer components such as the coolant
hose connections or by modifying mounting surface features to suit a
non-standard installation. Contact your Modine representative, sales
or application engineer for details.
MORE MODELS NOW AVAILABLE
The line of Lo-Profile “DONUT” oil cooler models offers a
greater variety of cooler sizes to more precisely meet the heattransfer needs of a wider range of engine applications that
before. The unique stacked plate construction of this oil cooler
provides flexibility to select the number of plates needed to
tailor the cooling capacity to each application. The current series
of coolers includes for-, six-, eight-, ten-, and twelve-plate
models; however, other models are available when quantities
warrant.
