Edson was born of the railway, during the height of transcontinental rail construction pushing for the Yellowhead Pass heading
toward British Columbia. Grand Trunk Pacific Railway (GTP) was ferrying hundreds of workers west and established Edson.
Edson received its first passenger train on August 10, 1910 and by 1911, the people of Edson placed a request to the Post Master
General to have the post office renamed Edson in honour of Edson J. Chamberlain, the then vice-president and general
manager of the Grand Trunk Pacific. On September 21, 1911, Edson was officially incorporated as a town and by 1912 the
population had nearly tripled to 1,233 people and included 32 local businesses. The town focussed on building solid roads to
create greater access to their community. Edson had been established in the heart of muskeg and country pillars of wooden kegs
filled with stones were used to create a solid foundation for walkways. Born out of the railroad industry, these economic
foundations have stayed strong throughout Edson’s history and were augmented by the forestry industry, oil, and gas industries,
and the small businesses that continue to help Edson flourish and make it the thriving community it is today. For more
