A Special Calling / Kim and Josh Silvia
Meet Kim and Josh Silvia. Josh has worked at Affiliated Foods for 11 years and is
currently working in the IT Operations department as our evening operator. Kim,
his wife of 7 years, is a student at Lubbock Christian University. A heavenly calling was in store for this couple. One that would begin with the Moore tornado and
lead to a life of missionary work.
On Monday, May 20, 2013,Moore, Ok and the surrounding areas were hit by a
devastating EF5 tornado. When Kim heard the news she was on the phone with
the leaders of No Boundaries International, (an Oklahoma-based Christian organization) who were in Sierra Leon, Africa. She was trying to determine how to best
help the victims of the devastating tornado that left many dead, homeless and
without basic necessities.
Kim and Josh Silvia / IT Evening Operator
No Boundaries has a facility in South Oklahoma City, approximately 5 miles from
the storm’s path, where she could stay. Kim decided to ask Amarilloans for
donations, load up a U-Haul and head for Moore, OK. She asked for donations of water, non-perishable food, first aid kits, clothing, toiletries, bathroom supplies, cots, and sleeping bags. Affiliated responded by donating 2 semi truck loads of water, and with
other donations, filled the truck and headed to Oklahoma. Kim was on her own in this quest until the leaders of No Boundaries
could arrive from Africa.. Kim has stayed in Oklahoma volunteering since May, coming back to Amarillo on occasion.…
In talking with the couple Kim stated that she always knew she would be working for God. With the Moore tornado, things just
happened sooner than she planned…The interesting thing is Josh had no idea that his life would change, and he too would be called
to be a minister and do God’s work...At that, Kim stated “She always knew she would marry a minister”. The couple had been experiencing a difficult period in their relationship and were not certain if their marriage would last, but God had a plan that would
bring them closer than ever!
Their lives have changed since May 20, 2013.
Update...Josh is stepping out in faith to answer his call to be a full time minister with No Boundaries, Intl. He will be leaving Affiliated Foods at the end of August 2013. Kim is currently a Senior at Lubbock Christian University majoring in Pre-Law, then plans
to attend Law School to be an advocate for human rights, eventually a U.S. Member of Congress.
Their mission with No Boundaries International is dedicating their life in bringing Hope and Good News after any type of devastation. Whether it’s a natural disaster like the Haiti earthquake or the tornadoes in Oklahoma or man made disasters like human trafficking, addiction, abuse, homelessness or poverty…...Relying on FAITH alone they are moving forward. They will be unpaid missionaries relying on support from partners, depending completely on God to provide for them through donations.
From their website, www.wearedoingwhat.com: By Kim and Josh
People are calling us "missionaries" but we are just normal people, who are trying to live out the calling God has placed in our
hearts...and we cannot stand the feeling of ignoring it any longer.
Thanks for sharing your story…“Godspeed”

AFI Bakery/Deli News
Greetings!!
Please allow me to introduce myself, my name is Bobby Pena and I am the new
Deli Specialist for Affiliated Foods. As the new Deli Specialist it will be my responsibility for the successful execution of retail merchandising and distribution
standards at retail level.
I previously worked for Safeway and Furr’s Supermarkets as Store Director with
Stores that had Delis, Bakeries and other Specialty departments. I am very excited for this great opportunity as the Deli Specialist. It is great to see people in the
stores that I have worked with in the past and meeting new ones as well.
My personal goal as Deli Specialist is to provide store support, provide ideas on
how to increase sales, give excellent service and how to improve product selection in their Delis. I have been with the company for five months and have visited
many stores enjoying every one of them. Even though every store is different, the
people are pretty much the same...GREAT! I want to thank everyone in the stores
that have made my job so fun and interesting and I thank you for allowing me to
work with you and your employees.

Mike Snyder, Jaime Ortega, Jeromy Sellmyer, and all the girls in the office for all the support and help that they have provided to
make me a better employee at Affiliated Foods. Please call me with any questions you may have and if I
don’t have an answer for you, I will always find one. Thanks!

Feature
For this month we have the food show and we are almost ready; we are going to have a lot of
promotions and different ideas for the showcases and different displays. Also we are going to
introduce some new items like a message cookie in the shape of a football, mini cupcakes, Truffles, and
some thaw and sell cake displays. Also we are going to have new rustic breads with bags and UPC and
nutrition on the labels; very good quality. If your store goes with them they will supply the rack and the
basket and one case of each flavor to start, but they have to keep with this product for a year.
Show Promotions
This time we are going to have all the product promotions in the book this way all you can
order in the show. Also at the bakery department we will have popcorns that are going to be
different flavors of popcorn. We are going to show the mini cupcakes in the middle of the
bakery and on a big table. Also I am going to try to have a display of regular cupcakes and
also the traditional showcases with all the different cakes.

It is time for back to school and you should be preparing by making displays of snack
type items for lunchboxes, and cinnamon rolls, donuts, muffins, biscuits and other
quick breakfast items. Make sure to make your displays for the weekend prior to school starting; check your local
schools to see when they start. Also if you don’t know your surrounding schools’ colors find out and use those colors to decorate donuts, cupcakes, big cookies, etc.
Preparing for Labor Day
Toward the end of the month you should start ordering items for Labor Day picnics. Make nice displays for
your bakeries. Make a display of breads such as bolillo rolls, Kaiser rolls, etc. A nice patriotic display might
include cupcakes, cakes, cookies and big cookies. Remember to decorate your donuts with colors to match
this holiday and all other holidays.
Thanks

AFI’s Warehouse Incentive Program
At Affiliated Foods, when we hire a new order selector there is a working standard that must be met in the
first 60 days of employment. The Warehouse Management System calculates time for each store order
based on Engineered Labor Standard. This time / standard must be met at 100% by the first 60 days. Once
the selector achieves 100% of standard and keeps that standard or above, they become qualified order selectors. This process helps orders to be pulled in a timely manner.

Power Outage
The first power outage hit Affiliated Foods on June 27th that effected the North Warehouse and
left Food Service, HBC, Refrigeration and Produce without power from 3:00p.m. until Midnight
on the 28th. The explosion was loud and so powerful that it warped the metal on the doors to the
Transformer and CT Cabinet, and blew them open.
June 27th, 2013
The cause of the outage was the main wire from the Transformer to the CT Cabinet, rubbed on
the cabinet stripping the insulation off the wire, which then shorted.
Excel Energy, American Electric, and the AFI Electrical and Refrigeration Crew worked around
the clock to restore power. Bell Helicopter loaned us a CT Cabinet, it would be two weeks before
we could get a replacement. We had to get generators from Dallas to get temporary power.
June 27th, 2013
It was 2 weeks, 1 hour, 14 minutes when we experienced the second power outage. July 11th,
2013 the power went out at 4:15p.m. and was back up on July 12th at 3:30a.m, plus 2 1/2 hours
to get the refrigeration to level out. It was determined the cause of the second outage was the
wires that were installed from the transformer to the CT Cabinet were incorrect. The damage
caused wires to short, phase to phase (melt) underground. Excel had to use a boom to pull the
wires out.
A special thanks to Buford Baze / AFI Electrician and Marvin
Myers / Network Support, in helping with the article.

The kids are going back to school. This will be a great meal to teach them
how to use chopsticks. Once learned, they will never forget!!!
Step 1. Rest one chopstick in
between the thumb and forefinger of your main hand. Keep it
steady with the tip of your ring
finger.
Step 2. Hold the second
chopstick like you would a pen
and grip firmly with your thumb,
index and middle finger.

Step 3. The secret to using
chopsticks is to keep the bottom
chopstick still and just move the
top one only.
Step 4. Keep the thumb still, but
move the index and middle finger to open and close chopsticks.
Now try and pick up something!
