There's another star at its best on ice too . . . Coca-Cola. "Know-how," a finished art in the making . . . these help to give ice-cold CocaCola that extra something. So do choicest ingredients and a flavour all its own. You enjoy its welcome refreshment that goes quickly into energy. All these factors lead people to select Coca-Cola as their favourite soft drink. SKINNER President, Oshawa Skating Club "ICE FROLICS OF 1945" In presenting Ice Frolics of 1945, the Oshawa Skating Club has put forth a tremendous effort to provide a good entertainment, at prices, which, we hope, will make the public feel that they have not wasted an evening, but have received full value for their money Under the guiding influence of our club professional, Miss Gwynneth Steeves, the club members, taking part in this evening's performance, have worked very hard for a long period, practising the various intricate routines. The costume committee and conveners of personnel have been a busy lot providing and fitting the three hundred or more costumes required. An added feature this year is the Oshawa Skating Club Orchestra, an organization of thirty or more musicians under the direction of Mr. John Drewniak. We are proud to say that this orchestra is ninety-eight per cent local talent and they deserve a great deal of credit for their efforts in providing the musical portion of our programme. We are most fortunate in having the two Senior Canadian Champions for 1945 among our Guest Artists. Miss Barbara Ann Scott, of the Minto Club, Ottawa, holds the title "Lady Figure Skating Champion of Canada", and as we go to press she is in New York City competing for the North American Title. Mr. Nigel Stephens also of the Minto Club, Ottawa, holds the title "Figure Skating Champion of Canada". Miss Nadine Phillips of The Toronto Skating Club is also in New York City competing for the North American Title. Miss Betty Hiscock of The Granite Club, Toronto, Mr. Gerry Blair of The University Skating Club, Toronto, and the inimitable Bill Cross of Detroit, Michigan, round out our Guest Artists. To all of them we extend our best wishes for still further successes and our thanks for being on our programme this year. AND THE CHALLENGE OF TOMORROW •CANADA'S pioneers, despite varying origins and backgrounds, had one thing in common — Enterprise —the greatest force for progress ever known. Enterprise which discovered and explored Canada, developed and utilized her resources, built her cities and populated her domain. Enterprise which enabled General Motors to become, in peace, producer of over a million civilian cars and trucks — in war, a mighty arsenal forging frontline weapons for a fighting people. To meet the challenge of tomorrow, the enterprise and initiative of General Motors will create better, safer transportation, link communities more closely together, provide faster, easier distribution of goods, thus helping ensure this nation and her people of a rich and splendid future worthy of a rich and splendid heritage. GENERAL MOTORS More and Better Things for More People CHEVROLET Page Eight • PONTIAC • OLDSMOBILE • BUICK • CADILLAC • CHEVROLET & G M C TRUCKS Figure Skating in Canada There's nothing so exhilarating, so exciting, so downright satisfying, as the ability to skate . . . well. We mean, of course . . . fancily! The ability to glide gracefully over the ice is largely a matter of practice and confidence. The envy that surges through your soul when you see others going through their paces at skating carnivals and exhibition meets can be assuaged considerably if you but give yourself a sporting chance. There are forty-seven member clubs of the Canadian Figure Skating Association spotted conveniently, for the most part, across the Dominion. About fifteen thousand enthusiastic members support the activities of these clubs. Several have artificial ice and are open during the summer months for practice and instruction. Most of the larger clubs have competent professional instructors. In every club there are older members who are only too pleased to help the beginner who really wants to learn. There are, too, a number of instruction books available which can be very helpful. Figure skating is a useful social accomplishment. There are a great many skating clubs throughout the United States, Great Britain and the principle countries of the continent. A visitor who is a good skater is always made welcome at these clubs. Indeed, the ability to skate well is an open sesame to many social events. In Canada, during peacetime winters, there are numerous competitive skating meets where club and national trophies are awarded to those who attain the skill and facility that comes from enthusiastic practice. Set your goal high and you may go far in the figure skating world of Canada. Naturally, tire-wise taxi owners tried all kinds. Now, with more than a year's driving experience behind them, their verdict is in. These men who judge tires on their performance, prefer Goodyears. Many enthusiastically praise the new 'synthetic' Goodyears as at least the equal of those made from natural rubber. When you are eligible for new tires, get Goodyears . . . and make sure that you, too, get the extra advantages of Goodyear research and experience. PHONE 96 — OSHAWA — Page Fifty-one SAVE YOUR TIRES With America practically cut off from the sources of raw rubber and military demands for tires growing every month, it will be a long time before you will be able to buy new tires. To get every last mile out of your present tires observe these fundamental precautions: 1—Keep air pressure up to standard and get 20% more mileage. 2—Have your tires checked frequently for small cuts and bruises. 3—Avoid sudden starts and stops—they grind the tread off your tires. 4—Drive slowly—tires wear twice as fast at 60 as they do at 40. 5—Park with care—do not scrape sidewall or bump curb. 6—Slow down on curves and go into lower gear on steep hills. 7—Rotate your tires—rear tires get twice as much wear as front ones. 8—Have your tires recapped before all the tread is worn off. By following these suggestions, you will get much more mileage and be able to operate your car a much longer time. Firestone V. H. McLELLAN FRED BALL 117 Simcoe St. N.
