SIGHTSEEING
Following are some of the most impressive places to visit in the Capital of Romania. If possible, do see
them all, as they are all spectacular.
The Palace of Parliament is the second largest
building in the world after the Pentagon, containing
both chambers of the Romanian Parliament. According
to the World Records Academy, the Palace is the world's
largest civilian building with an administrative function,
most expensive administrative building and heaviest
building.
It is a "must see" if you are in Bucharest, as it is
enjoyable to visit and to learn about some of the history
of the Palace – one of the most fascinating buildings in
modern history – designed by architect Anca Petrescu
when she was only 28 years old, an impressive feat of
architecture and craftsmanship. From the inside, it is
perhaps even more stunning: marble floors, marbled
wallsand hand-woven drapes everywhere.
Lipscani is a street in the middle of the Old Town or the Historic Centre. This street was very famous
during the 19th century where many manufacturers had their store, each of them specialized with the
production of different traditional Romanian products. It is a symbol of the old capital, the so-called "Little
Paris". On the left and right you can see stylish buildings with beautiful architecture, where you can find
different kinds of restaurants, pubs and art shops.
The Museum of the Romanian Peasant (Muzeul Țăranului Român) must be visited to get an idea of
Romanian rural life. The exhibits are neatly displayed and well maintained. By visiting, you will get a good
idea of the background of typical rural folks in different areas across the country, and the environment they
used to live in a few hundred years ago. On display
you will see real buildings reassembled just as they
were – on the outside and the inside.
The National Military Circle (Cercul Militar) is a majestic, architectural monument, situated near
University Square, at the intersection of the famous Victory Avenue and Queen Elisabeth Boulevard. It
houses five splendid rooms named each after the respective theme it embodies- The Norwegian Room, the
Moorish Room, the Marble Room, the Gothic Room and the Byzantine Room-, art galleries and a restaurant
with an enormous outside terrace. In the weekends wedding parties are organized there.
The Romanian Orthodox Patriarchal Cathedral has a very good position at the top of the hill (Dealul
Mitropoliei) next to the Unirii square, making it visible from the city-centre. The Romanian Patriarch lives
there, right next to the Cathedral. Here you will find beautiful frescoes and it is a “must see” during your
visit to Bucharest.
AFI Palace Cotroceni is a paradise for shopping aficionados! You will find a broad spectrum of wellknown brand-stores and a great selection of fast-food chains. Right beside the table area, ice skating lovers
will find an ice rink. To get to AFI, get off the subway at Politehnica and simply follow the crowd.
The Romanian Athenaeum is a concert hall in the
center of Bucharest, Romania and a landmark of the
Romanian capital city. Opened in 1888, the ornate, domed,
circular building is the city's main concert hall and home of
the "George Enescu" Philharmonic and of the George
Enescu annual international music festival.
The building was designed by the French architect
Albert Galleron, built on a property that had belonged to
the Văcărescu family and inaugurated in 1888, although
work continued until 1897. A portion of the construction
funds was raised by public subscription in a 28-year long
effort, of which the slogan is still remembered today:
"Donate one leu for the Ateneu!" (“Donați un leu pentru Ateneu!”).

NIGHT ON THE TOWN
On your visit to Romania you will have some free time
on your hands, which you may want to spend
wandering around the city, and especially the Old
Town, or the Old Centre – Lipscani, as we call it, the
cradle of the Romanian nightlife.
During the Communist period, the whole area was
scheduled to be demolished, but this never came to
fruition. The district became neglected, but nowadays
it is once more vibrant, vigorous and alluring!
The area is more or less all that’s left of pre-World War
II Bucharest and it is gorgeous. There you will find lots
of pubs, lounges, restaurants and clubs, places where
you can have fun the way the city residents do.
Some notable mentions for a pub/lounge include
Mike’s Pub, 55 Jazz and Oktoberfest. Excellent venues,
great music, fancy drinks. Anything you can ask for.
Up: Lipscani Street in the interwar period.
Right: Lipsacani a few years ago.
El Dictador and El Comandante Junior are some of the
favorites as far as clubs in the area go, while Hanul lui
Manuc and Vecchio are delightful restaurants definitely
worth a visit, with beautiful decor and Romanian vibe and
tradition.
Enjoy your fun!
