A Midwestern fly fishing tradition
of education, conservation and fun
Great Waters staff
Tom Helgeson’s Great Waters Fly
Fishing Expo is a celebration of the
sport -- a chance for our diverse
community to come together to share
their knowledge and enjoyment of fly
fishing.
The expo is a gathering place that
allows new anglers to mix with a
welcoming group of seasoned pros,
helping those of all skill levels achieve a
deeper and richer appreciation for the
sport. Whether an angler is passionate
about trout, musky or bass, the Great
Waters Expo has the experts, gear and
instruction necessary to make anglers
successful in their pursuits.
Mainly, however, the expo is just a
lot of fun.
Fly fishing personality and author
Skip Morris embodies the best of the
expo and has an infectious passion for
the sport.
“It does seem as though most fly
fishers are continually interested in
learning,” he said. “That’s one of the
really great things. And expos just have
DUKE WELTER is the consummate
conservationist and a passionate and
committed fly angler. Duke has been
front-and-center in some of the most
controversial environmental and
stewardship issues in the Midwest for
decades. He is as known for hauling
rock on local stream improvement
projects as for lobbying legislators on
conservation issues. Duke has been
a national leader with TU, winning
countless awards for his work and
advocacy.
SKIP MORRIS is a prolific flyfishing and fly-tying author, having
written twelve books, including a
must-read resource for beginners,
Fly Tying Made Clear and Simple.
His videos and DVDs range from
instruction for tying nymphs, to
tying bass flies, to tying and fishing
flies for sea-run cutthroat trout. He
is also an accomplished angler who
relishes helping anglers of all skill
levels improve their fly fishing skills.
Skip will be giving several featured
programs and tying instruction.
TIM HOLSCHLAG is an acclaimed
small mouth bass angler in the
Midwest. His passion for bass has
taken him all over the world and
he recently became one of the
first known Americans to fish for
trout in South Africa. Holschlag is
also an accomplished author and
instructional video personality.
PAUL HANSEN is owner of Sporting
Life Adventure Travel and Sporting
Life Outfitters. A phenomenal guide
and committed educator, Paul has
been in the fly fishing industry for
decades. He is currently the fly fishing
product representative for Temple
Fork Outfitters and will be the host
of Great Waters’ first-ever MASTER
FLY tying contest. Paul has created
what promises to be an exciting,
nerve-wracking and challenging fly
tying contest for all to enjoy. He will
also give a presentation on another
passion, fly fishing from a kayak.
JP LIPTON is one of the early
practitioners of the carp-on-the-fly
movement. His application of stream
biology, ecology and geomorphology
a lot of camaraderie and a lot of fun.”
Morris, the author of more than a
dozen books on fly angling and tying,
said he hopes people come away not
just with a better sense of how to catch
fish, but a deeper appreciation for the
sport.
“Maybe the will understand a little
more about why we fish and what the
reward is,” he said. “More than anything
it is simply rewarding emotionally or
spiritually.”
Morris will have a booth and the
show, where attendees can have oneon-one time with him and buy one of
his books.
Along with Morris and other fly
fishing personalities, the 11th annual
Great Waters Fly Fishing Expo continues
with a strong conservation ethic and a
commitment to learning.
The
expo
features
youth
programming all weekend. On Sunday,
Cabela’s is offering free prizes for kids
who attend the expo.
Great Waters will also feature free fly
casting instruction and fly tying lessons
all weekend.
Conservation programming, bamboo
rod building classes and a writers’ panel
remain signature parts of the show.
On Saturday night, the newest
recipient of the Dr. Thomas F. Waters
Stewardship Award will be named.
Fly fishing can be an intimidating
sport for beginners. To make the expo
as inviting and accessible as possible,
fly fishing instructor and guide Carl
Haensel will oversee the “Meet the
expert” booth at the show entrance.
Don’t know the difference between
a leader and a tippet? Carl’s your guy.
Don’t know a caddis from a trico? Again,
see Carl. Unsure what gear to buy for a
once-in-a-lifetime trip to Alaska? Carl
is our resident expo guru who can help
you customize your show experience.
“We really want to honor and
celebrate the Midwestern fly fishing
experience,” said Carrie Helgeson, an
owner and organizer of the expo. “We
strive to create a unique and engaging
fly fishing show, and once again serve
as a gathering place for the diverse
and wonderful Midwest angling
community.”
Helgeson said that the show is also
a nod to the accomplishments of the
many fly fishing clubs and organizations
that serve as a vital connector for all
those who are passionate about the
sport.
“Without the continued support
and assistance of the St. Paul Fly Tiers,
Trout Unlimited and the Federation of
Fly Fishers, we never could continue
the show,” Helgeson said. “The show
is really to acknowledge and support
those groups, too.”
Don’t forget to checkout St. Paul Fly Tiers’ Theater and fly tying area to see
fly fishing celebrities and featured presenters demonstrate their tying skills.
Whether you are a beginner or an expert, you will find the instruction you
need from a friendly and engaging expert. Check the expo website closer to
the show date for a schedule of featured tiers.

hexagonal rods that are mainly
progressive, more medium fast
action rods, but make rods that
cover the entire range from slow to

A message from
our founder:
I don’t pretend to know the
answers to many of the questions
raised about the future health of our
rivers, streams and lakes and their
fish. I do know that we are running
out of time in our effort to save
many of them. We need good, depoliticized fisheries management.
We need to be unified, those of us
who fish, and signal our support of
those management visions that are
true. We need to step beyond our
bickering, and let our imaginations,
goodwill and respect for science
transport us into and through that
future... Fish on, my friends, and be
vigilant.

his program this year and when they
visit him at his booth.
SCOTT THORPE is a steelhead
fly fishing guide who strives to
provide a unique and memorable
outdoor experience. He’s a friendly
and passionate guide and has a
deep love for the places were trout
live. He specializes in helping new
anglers with a desire to learn the
sport. He guides in Alaska and holds
the Minnesota state record for
steelhead.
DAN FRASER is the fly fishing editor
for CarpPro e-magazine. He grew up
hunting and fishing the prairies of
eastern South Dakota. Dan decided
to teach himself to fly fish, but since
the closest trout waters was 300
miles away, he became a committed
carp angler. He now lives in Sioux
Falls, SD., and will join the writers’
panel this year for the first time.
DAMIAN WILMOT has been
guiding fly angers in northern
Wisconsin on trout waters for nearly
20 years. He has fished the same
region his entire life and is an expert
angling educator in the region.
When not chasing trout, he pursues
smallmouth, pike and musky.
CHRIS WILLEN has been musky
fishing for more than a decade.
He spends a lot of his time hunting
the rivers and lakes of northern
Wisconsin for big musky. His fulltime guide service offers trips geared
around beginner musky fly anglers
to the more experienced fisherman
looking to sharpen their skills with
a new approach. Chris’s guide
service offers all day and half day
float trips on beautiful north woods
rivers along with lakes and flowages
chasing musky. This is Chris’ first
time presenting at Great Waters and
we know attendees will be blown
away with his skill, enthusiasm and
desire to teach.

Tom Helgeson’s Great Waters Fly Fishing Expo is hosting the first-ever MASTER FLY fly tying tournament, which is sure to
be a centerpiece attraction of future shows.
MASTER FLY is a high-stakes test of skills and serves to see who can tie the best fly under a crushing deadline. The winner
will be the tier who best utilizes a secret material.
“We wanted to bring a new dimension to the expo, something that would be fun for participants and spectators,” said Paul
Hansen, MASTER FLY organizer and host. “It is going to be total chaos on a fly. It is also a great a chance to showcase the fly
tying skills of our local tiers.”
Montana Fly Co., Regal Vise and The Fly Angler are sponsoring MASTER FLY and providing prizes for the winners of each
heat and the final champion.
FLY MASTER will be from noon to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 22.

The Tenkara USA Rhodo™ is the shortest and lightest feeling rod made by Tenkara USA. The very versatile
Rhodo can be fished from 8’10” (very short for a tenkara rod), 9’9”, or 10’6”. This rod was designed due to
customer feedback in the East and Midwest about the need for a rod that could be fished at shorter lengths for
tight brush. The Rhodo is a joy to fish on small brook trout streams, bluegill ponds, and even medium size trout
rivers when fully extended. Young anglers will like its lighter weight and it’s patented “keep your plug” system
will will be appreciated by any experienced tenkara anglers who has ever lost theirs. Check out the Rhodo and
its bigger brother the Sato for the most refined tenkara rods on the market today.

Vettec’s SG-20 is a new product marketed as a quick fix for leaky waders and hip boots,
but we discovered rather quickly that it works on more than those two problems – and
heavier ones at that.
We repaired a pair of leaky hip boots last winter, but it was this past turkey season, when
my son’s hunting boots split apart, that we got a real test for this new outdoors adhesive.
The rubber sole began to separate from the rest of one boot, but a quick squirt of SG-20,
which comes in a convenient applicator tube, and he was back in action in the same day.
SG-20 is a blend of two polyurethane adhesive materials that sticks to neoprene, canvas
and a variety of other materials. Damaged gear can be fixed by drying it out and applying
SG-20, which comes in a syringe-like applicator that mixes the adhesives. According to the company, the repair takes about an hour. We
won’t dare dispute that schedule, because the repaired boots were ready to go if we’d had an afternoon hunt planned.
The adhesive material used in SG-20 isn’t new – but the outdoors application is. The adhesives were originally used by farriers to
repair cracks in the hooves of horses.
SG-20 comes in a repair kit with one dispensing cartridge, a plunger, three mixing tips and a plastic sheet that can be used for
smoothing out the sealant upon application. The adhesive remains good for up to a year after the cartridge is opened and can be used
multiple times.
