Welcome to the latest issue of the VisionID Product Guide, I hope you find the content and product information useful and it will become the
ultimate reference tool for your business.
The VisionID philosophy is to be the leading independent supplier of Mobile Computing, Identification and Barcoding solutions to all industry sectors
throughout Ireland. VisionID Ltd. was formed to provide Barcode and Data Capture solutions in today’s “real time” society. Whatever the industry

At VisionID, our number one priority is to ensure that we maintain state-ofthe-art Service and Support for all our customers. To accomplish this, VisionID
has a designated team of Engineers to provide all your needs with our new
Service and Support Department.
VisionID not only guarantees great products, it also offers several service options for its customers. The Service and Support Department can
offer on-site and workshop repairs, consultancy on configurations, set-ups and for complete peace of mind, service contracts that will provide
customers with preventative maintenance and breakdown cover. We can also offer manufacturer service plans on mobile computers and scanning equipment. VisionID engineers are the best trained in the business and all are accredited by our manufacturing partners.
Professional Services
VisionID’s Professional Service Department are able to deal with specific requirements over and above servicing of equipment. From mobile
applications coupled with wireless network instillations to process improvement consultancy, we can manage your projects from start to finish
delivering improvements to your business.
VisionID provide a range of onsite and return to base service and support offerings to ensure peace of mind.
On-site Maintenance Contracts
VisionID’s on-site maintenance contracts give you the reassurance that your equipment is covered by world-class engineering services. Benefits
include limited down time due to our dedicated team of engineering professionals.
Being a certified service partner with a large number of leading global vendors, we supply and fit only OEM spare parts for repairs.
There are two onsite annual service plans that can be purchased:
A standard 2 day response.
A next day response.
Our annual service plans include all travel, labour and non-consumable parts. We also include two on-site preventive maintenance visits per year.
Non-Contract Maintenance
VisionID’s Service Centre offers on-site preventative maintenance and repair works for equipment not covered through VisionID’s service plans.
For this service there is an initial call out charge and an hourly rate, parts and print head charges where applicable.
It is VisionID’s policy to prioritise contract call-outs over non-contract. However, VisionID will ensure that an engineer calls to your premises
at the earliest opportunity.
Depot Maintenance Contracts
If you do not require an on-site maintenance contract and have equipment that needs servicing or repairing, this can be sent to VisionID’s
Service Department.
From our Central Service centre in Clonmel, our highly trained in-house engineers can repair and service equipment. Our Depot Service Plan
will give a speedy turn around for all your repairs and service needs. Depot Service Plans include all non-consumable parts, labour and standard
return shipping charges.
We also offer a non-contract depot repair, which offers the same excellent level of service, excluding cost of non-consumable parts, labour
and standard shipping.

What is a barcode?
A Barcode is an encoded set of lines and spaces of different widths that can be scanned and interpreted into numbers to identify a product.
There are 2 types of barcodes Linear and Data Matrix
Linear Barcode Also known as a 1D Barcode it is a machine readable code consisting of a series of bars and spaces printed in defined ratios.
Barcode symbology is essentially alphabets in which different widths of bars and spaces are combined to form characters
and, ultimately, a message. Because there are many ways to arrange these bars and spaces, numerous symbologies are
possible.
Data Matrix or 2D barcodes A Data Matrix code, also known as a 2D barcode or simply a 2D code, is a two-dimensional way of representing information.
It is similar to a linear barcode, but has more data representation capability, consisting of black and white square modules
arranged in either a square or rectangular pattern. The information to be encoded can be text or raw data. The length of the
encoded data depends on the symbol dimension used. Error correction codes are added to increase symbol strength: even if
they are partially damaged, they can still be read. A Data Matrix symbol can store up to 2,335 alphanumeric characters.
Every Data Matrix is composed of at least two finder patterns or handles and two syncs. Handles are two perpendicular lines, coloured the
same way as 1 module, while syncs are like handles with the difference that they are made of alternating black and white modules. Handles
achieve a good alignment with the symbol, while syncs sample modules correctly. If the matrix dimension grows, more syncs and handles are
added up to 8 both horizontally and vertically. Symbol sizes vary from 8 × 8 to 144 × 144
Types of Barcode Scanners
Handheld
Handheld scanners are best used in applications where the user is required to scan items of varying shapes or sizes, or may be at a distance
from the operator, such as pallet stored on the top of a warehouse rack.
Primary scanners:
Corded
Cordless
This type of scanner is connected directly to a defined workstation,
using different cable combinations. USB is now the most popular, but
other options are available such as PS/2, AT/XT, RS232 etc.
Cordless scanners allow the user to roam up to a 50 feet radius, by transmitting the scanned information to its cradle, via Bluetooth or Wireless,
which is in turn connected directly to the defined workstation.

Hands Free/Presentation
Wall or table-mounted scanners that the barcode is passed under or beside. These are commonly found at the checkout counters of supermarkets and other retailers. Ideal for small retail operations and institutional organisations requiring dependable data entry. The omni-directional
scan pattern reads the barcode regardless of orientation, eliminating the need to precisely align products to the scanner. Advanced software
algorithms reconstruct poorly printed and damaged codes, further increasing performance and speeding customers through the point of sale.
Fixed Position
Fixed Position scanners are typically used in applications where accurate, unattended automated data entry is required, such as tracking items
throughout a manufacturing line, or machine-sortation of packages along a conveyor belt.
Fixed Position scanners are available in short or long working distances for greater flexibility. Typically, omni-directional or rastering style scanners are used, enabling items to pass and to be read without precise positioning of the barcodes, resulting in accurate first-pass scans.

Dot Peening
Dot Peening is achieved by pneumatically or electromechanically striking a carbide- or diamond tipped stylus against
the material being marked.

Laser Etching
Laser Etching applies heat to the surface of a part that causes the surface of the part to melt, vaporise or change in some
way to produce a mark.

Verification is required in many instances to check the quality of code, particularly at time of marking.
This can provide immediate feedback as to any changes to the marking process. For example, the
verifier can monitor tip wear on a dot peen machine by monitoring dot size, and flag the operator.
At the marking stage, during the manufacturing process
and throughout the products lifecycle, the mark will be
required to be read. Depending on the situation and the
environment, this could be with a handheld reader tethered
to a host computer or with a remote Bluetooth
connection.
The information could be gathered with a Mobile Computer with inbuilt reader and wirelessly
transmitted back to the host. Fixed Position readers are used for automatically collecting the data
on some form of automated transfer or a presentation type reader used in an application where the
user needs to be “hands-free”.

What is Machine Vision?
Machine vision is the technology to replace or complement manual inspections and measurements with digital cameras and image processing.
The technology is used in a variety of different industries to automate the production, increase production speed and yield, and to improve
product quality.
Machine vision in operation can be described by a four-step flow:
1. Imaging: Take an image.
2. Processing and analysis: Analyze the image to obtain a result.
3. Communication: Send the result to the system in control of the process.
4. Action: Take action depending on the vision system’s result.

Application Types
Machine vision applications can be divided into four types from a technical point of view:
Locate
In locating applications, the purpose of the vision system is to find the object and report its position
and orientation. In robot bin picking applications the camera finds a reference coordinate on the object,
for example center of gravity or a corner, and then sends the information to a robot which picks up
the object.
Measure
In measurement applications the purpose of the vision system is to measure physical dimensions of
the object. Examples of physical dimensions are distance, diameter, curvature, area, height, and volume.
In the example to the left, a camera measures multiple diameters of cogs.
Inspect
In inspection applications the purpose of the vision system is to validate certain features, for example
presence or absence of a correct label on a bottle, screws in an assembly, chocolates in a box, or
defects. In the example to the left, a camera inspects brake pads for defects.
Identify
In an identification application the vision system reads various codes and alphanumeric characters
(text and numbers).
In the example to the left, a camera reads the best before date on a bottle. Examples of codes that can
be read simultaneously on the same package are barcodes and matrix codes.

Camera Types
Cameras used for machine vision are categorised into vision sensors and smart cameras. All camera
types are digital, as opposed to analog cameras in traditional photography. Vision sensors and smart
cameras have the ability to analyse the image and produce a result by themselves.
Vision Sensors
A vision sensor is a specialised vision system that is configured to perform a specific task, unlike
general camera systems that have more flexible configuration software. Thanks to the specific
functionality of the vision sensor, the setup time is short relative to other vision systems.
Example
The SICK CVS and Inspector product range includes vision sensors for colour sorting, contour verification, and text reading functionality. For example, the vision sensors are used to inspect lid colour
on food packages and to verify best before.

Smart Cameras
A smart camera is a camera with a built-in image analysis unit that allows the camera to operate
stand alone without a PC. The flexible built-in image analysis functionality provides inspection possibilities in a vast range of applications.
Smart cameras are very common in 2D machine vision. SICK IVP also produces a smart
camera for 3D analysis.

The IVC-2D (Industrial Vision Camera) is a stand-alone vision system for 2D analysis. For example,
the system can detect the correct label and its position on a product container. A faulty pattern or
a misalignment is reported as a fail.

The IVC-3D is a stand-alone vision system for 3D analysis. It scans calibrated 3D data in mm, analyses
the image, and outputs the result. For example, the system can detect surface defects, measure

There is a European Directive, called the ATEX Directive No.1992/92, and is concerned with the risks from fire and explosion arising from
flammable substances stored or used in the workplace. Regulations apply at most workplaces where flammable substances are stored or used,
for example, factories where flammable liquids are present or where flammable dusts are produced in the process.

What is RFID?
RFID uses a transponder (commonly called an RF tag) that is electronically programmed with unique information. This data can then be read
from a distance over radio waves. These tags can also be read-write, meaning data can be read from and written to the tag, e.g. production
information can be updated on a tag as it progresses down the assembly line. RFID systems consist of a number of components including tags,
handheld or stationary readers, data input units and system software. The tags are the backbone of the technology and come in all shapes,
sizes and read ranges including thin and flexible “smart labels” which can be laminated between paper or plastic.
The significant advantage of all types of RFID systems is the non-contact, non-line-of-sight nature of the technology.

Passive and Active RFID Technologies
Within the RFID arena there are two primary types of technology available, namely Passive and Active.
Passive Tags
A Passive tag does not contain a battery. When radio waves from the reader reach the chip’s antenna, the energy is converted by the antenna
into electricity that can power up the microchip in the tag. The tag is able to send back information stored on the chip. Today, simple passive
tags cost from 20 Cents to several Euros, depending on the amount of memory on the tag and other features.
Active Tags
An Active tag has a transmitter to send back information, rather than reflecting back a signal from the reader, as a passive tag does. Most
active tags use a battery to transmit a signal to a reader. However, some tags can gather energy from other sources. Active tags can be read
from 300 feet (100 meters) or more, but they are expensive (typically more than €20 each). They’re used for tracking expensive items over
long ranges. For instance, the U.S. military use active tags to track containers of supplies arriving in ports.

The main printer types revolve around the printing technology incorporating Direct Thermal and Thermal Transfer.
Direct Thermal Printing
Direct thermal printing is an old technology originally designed for low cost copiers and fax machines that utilise chemically coated paper. It
has since been transformed into a highly successful technology for bar coding. The thermal print head is typically a long linear array of tiny
resistive heating elements (about 100 to 300 per inch) that are arranged perpendicular to the paper flow. Each thermal print head element
locally heats an area on the chemically coated paper directly under the print area. This induces a chemical reaction which causes a black dot
to form in that area. The image itself is formed by building it from dot rows as the media passes underneath the active edge of the print head.
Direct thermal printing is ideal for applications with a short shelf life requirement – meaning the label is not required to last very long.
Thermal Transfer Printing
Thermal transfer printers use the same basic technology as direct thermal printers, but with the elimination of chemically-coated media material in favor of a non-sensitised face stock and a special linked ribbon. A durable, polyester ribbon film coated with a dry thermal transfer ink
is placed between the thermal print head and label. The thermal print head is used to transcribe the ink onto the label surface, where it cools
and anchors to the media surface. The polyester ribbon is then peeled away leaving behind a stable, passive image. Thermal transfer printing
is ideal for applications with a along shelf life and durability requirement.
Labels come in many different formats and a multiple of options. Some of the key factors when choosing the correct label printer are:

Desktop
Ideal for small usage applications which roughly require 500 2”x4” labels per day. Casings tend to
be plastic and therefore not ideal for the more industrial applications
Mobile
More and more popular due to the flexibility they can bring to applications. Mobile printers when
configured with options such as Bluetooth or wireless connectivity are prevalent in applications such
as Field Force Automation, Retail, Hospitality and Services. Most commonly used with a receipt paper,
the label options are limited due to form factor and print method.
Mid – Range
Very popular range that is applicable to most industries as it can handle larger volumes and also
more rugged casings than the desktop ranges. Depending on the printer you could comfortably
handle anywhere up to 5,000 labels per day.
High-End
Used in mission critical or very high volume printing most commonly found in production or warehousing applications. Capable of operating 24 hours a day and with a multiple of options to handle
the most delicate of label formats.

Thermal Transfer labels offer more durable, long-lasting results with resistance to abrasion, moisture, and chemicals.
Direct Thermal labels offer an inexpensive way to print paper labels, providing excellent print quality and use in a multitude of

Sizes and Shapes
We can access an extensive library of standard dies for manufacturing die-cut, pressure-sensitive
labels. These dies range in shape and size to produce anything from tiny, round-edge jewellery
hang tags to large chemical drum labels. We can often save you the time and expense of having to
create a new die by using one that exists in our vast library of rotary dies. If necessary, a new die
can be produced quickly and economically.
Preprinted Labels and Tags
We can preprint information - corporate logos in custom colours, company addresses, product
illustrations, or standardised forms on nearly all of our materials. We can provide print to your
specifications using up to six Pantone Matching System (PMS) inks and we can also floodcoat
materials to produce coloured labels.
Adhesives
We can offer a variety of adhesives to meet your application requirements. Some are permanent;
others are removable, patterned, or tamper-evident. We’ll recommend an adhesive that will work
