Formed in New York City in 1980, MMDG’s
touring schedule steadily expanded to include
cities in the U.S. and Europe. In 1986 it made
its first national television appearance for
the PBS series “Dance in America.” In 1988,
MMDG was invited to become the national
dance company of Belgium, and spent three
years in residence at the Théâtre Royal de la
Monnaie in Brussels. The company returned to
the United States in 1991 as one of the world’s
leading dance companies.
Mark has collaborated with artists from Mikhail
Baryshnikov to Yo-Yo Ma to Isaac Mizrahi. He
has created works for, among many others,
the San Francisco Ballet, the Paris Opera
Ballet, and American Ballet Theater, and has
stage directed operas for The Metropolitan
Opera, English National Opera, and the Royal
Opera House, Covent Garden.

Chris Thile, of Punch Brothers, is a
mandolin virtuoso, composer and
vocalist. With his broad outlook that
encompasses progressive bluegrass,

Bach Sonatas & Partitas Vol. 1, also

Born in Moscow, 24-year old Natasha Paremski began her piano studies at the age of 4. In 1995
she and her family moved to the United States. She studied at the San Francisco Conservatory
of Music before moving to New York to study at Mannes College of Music, from which she
graduated in 2007. Her growing list of awards includes the Prix Montblanc 2007, the 2006
Gilmore Young Artist Award, top prize in the 2002 Bronislaw Kaper Awards sponsored by the
Los Angeles Philharmonic, and top prize in the Young Artists in Carnegie Hall 2000 International
Piano Festival. In September 2010, Natasha was named the Classical Recording Foundation’s
Young Artist of the Year.

For thousands of years humankind has turned toward the sun for inspiration, be it spiritual, philosophical, or
poetic. In many Native American cultures each day begins with “running to the sun,” a fusion of spiritual and
physical discipline, a daily search for the sacred.

Performing together, these two master
musicians weave duets out of staggering
virtuosity, creating mind-blowing and
magical performances.
Béla Fleck, considered the premiere banjo
player in the world, lives to improvise and loves
to work with unexpected musical fusions. In
high school, Béla began experimenting by
playing bebop on the banjo. His “blu-bop” mix
of jazz and bluegrass with his Flecktones was
an unexpected commercial success, as well as
critically-acclaimed and award-winning. Fleck
has won 8 GRAMMY® awards and is the only
musician to be nominated for the GRAMMY®
in the jazz, bluegrass, pop, country, gospel,
composition and world music categories.
Chick Corea’s restless creativity knows no
bounds. His groundbreaking band Return to
Forever launched the fusion era of the 1970’s.
His work with flamenco great Paco de Lucia led
to the formation of Touchstone, a band whose
fiery Latinismo music bridged the worlds of
flamenco and jazz. Chick’s whole career is the
stuff of jazz lore, an amalgamation of influential,
limit-stretching, genre-bending musical

history of northeast England, is the product of an
exceptional creative collaboration between renowned filmmaker Bill Morrison
(Decasia) and Icelandic musician and composer Jóhann Jóhannsson.
Collaged from rare archive film footage and drawing on the British mining
industry’s brass music culture, “The Miners’ Hymns” celebrates the labor,
endurance, vibrant community and rich culture that characterized the lives
of those who worked underground.

ineffable sense of being between times, landscapes and emotions,” according to

Founded in 1974 by a group of ballet enthusiasts for the purpose of presenting a playful,
entertaining, parody of classical ballet (en travesti), The Trocks, as they have come to be known,
first performed in the late-late shows in Off-Off Broadway lofts. They quickly garnered a major
critical essay in The New Yorker, and combined with reviews in The New York Times and The Village
Voice, established the Company as an artistic and popular success. Very soon their inspired blend
of a loving knowledge of dance, a comic approach, and the astounding fact that men can, indeed,
dance en pointe without falling flat on their faces, earned them a permanent slot in the dance world.
The Newman Center presented The Trocks to a sold-out house in 2008, and now they’re back!

A TRIBUTE TO
Dubbed “The First Lady of Song,” Ella Fitzgerald was the most
popular female jazz singer in the United States for more than
half a century. She won 13 GRAMMY® awards and sold over 40
million albums. This special “Tribute to Ella Fitzgerald” program
will present many of Ella’s original big band arrangements made
available through the assistance of the Ella Fitzgerald Charitable
Foundation. Many of these arrangements, by the likes of Count
Basie, Billy Strayhorn, and Benny Carter, have not been heard
in concert in over 40 years. The Smithsonian Jazz Masterworks
Orchestra (SJMO) comes together with regional musicians and
features New York Voices co-founder Kim Nazarian, paying
tribute to Ella.
Nazarian was clearly thrilled to honor
Fitzgerald… with the formidable support of
the Smithsonian Jazz Masterworks Orchestra….
Nazarian’s assignment, of course, was about
as unenviable as they come, given Fitzgerald’s
nonpareil gift for swinging, scatting and exuding
effervescent charm. But Nazarian held up her
end of the bargain, displaying a voice powerful
enough to pierce through blaring trumpets
and agile enough to recall the seamless quality
that made Fitzgerald’s recordings with the late
guitarist Joe Pass so compelling and intimate.”

The Newman Center for the Performing Arts is fully accessible to
patrons in wheelchairs and to those with other special needs.
To request assistance, please call the Box Office.
Parking is FREE for all Newman Center Presents performances,
and is available in the Newman Center parking garage. Patrons
are advised not to park in the neighborhoods as most of the side
streets have one-hour parking only
• Food and beverages are prohibited in the seating areas of all theatres.
• No audio, video or photography equipment of any kind is allowed in the performance venues.
• Artists and programs are subject to change without notice.
• All sales are final. No refunds or exchanges.
• Patrons are encouraged to call the Newman Center for information
about the suitability of events for children.
