“Alumni” is an easily-used term, often mentioned as an extension of any school’s purpose. Knowing
how many there are, where they are, and what they are doing now, can be a bit of information and
a reminder of a school’s reach; I know when my Santa Clara magazine arrives, I look first at the
alum news, scanning for names I know. All institutions hope that their alums will support them too,
at events or by gifting. What I experience here at CN is the remarkable variety and care our alums
have for the school and each other. In that, I also include Ursuline Alumnae, from the ones I went
to school with to the ones I taught. Now under one inclusive name, “Cardinal Newman” remains a
wider community and its alums continue to spread out and about.
This school year, we see more alums involved with the school than ever. In that, I also include
parents of alumni, for they are bonded into this community by both welcome and involvement. From
our teachers to support staff to the Board and beyond, we have alums involved. When we had Open
House this year, I talked with ten different alums who were there with their children; looking at the list of other interested people, I
saw more names I recognized. At the Fun in the Fall event, not only did we have generations of alums, but the class of ’75 used the
gathering as a reunion gathering, including my sister who came to see old friends again. The Advancement Office helps support the
alums and hosts drop-in events too where alums can network and connect; I always see someone I have not seen in awhile, a time
that warms and recalls time shared together. Homecoming is largely for current students with the game and dance having outsized
influence, yet it is truly a coming home for many and a place where the alums can gather and enjoy. Near that same time of year is
our Career Day, filled with alum and parent speakers willing to share their experience and advice. This year my eldest son, only two
weeks out of the Marine Corps, spoke to those interested in the military, an alum talking to those who sit where he did only five years
before and able to relate to their questions. Current students heard from a quality group of people, who not only shared their work
purpose but their life purpose. In that, the emphasis on service, a strong mark of a Cardinal Newman education, came through for
many younger ones to hear for they will too soon be gone, away to learn more, and hopefully willing to lead and help others.
While my wife and sons say going to places with me in Sonoma County just means running into people I know, I see it as a chance
to reconnect and build upon common experiences, as those people are usually ones I know from our school community. It means
enjoying a current event with students and parents, along with the strong alum representation of those who come to see how things
are going now. An example would be this year’s football game at Windsor, where I live, as the 2015 CN Varsity NBL Champions
finished undefeated in league play and prepared for playoffs. After a thrilling JV game tied at the end, I spoke with Coach DJ Sexton
’04; we shared our views about the growth and progress of his team. Nearby was Ryan Vice ’90, whose sophomore son, Caleb,
was playing. I talked with alum parents about how their families were doing, several alums introduced me to their young children,
stating their grade and when they would be coming to CN. Then Nick Stephenson ’85, stopped by, along with Randie Babbini ’89,
who had brought his son. From my student time, I saw Tom O’Hair ’78, and Marc Opperman ’79, going up into the stands with them
to watch the game. Welcoming us to sit with them were Pete Boschetti ’79 and Pat Broderick ’79, along with Adam Lewis ‘96 and
sons. We shared stories and memories in between, going back and forth from past to present to future possible. While the time is
brief together, an hour or two, much is accomplished in these shared bonds. That is not naming all the alums I saw or spoke with at
one game, just ones I had the chance to share more time with. But it does capture how easily we can come together and that most
every school event has an alumni connection; you just need to go and you will be reminded of where you are from, and who you are.
From others, we also can see ourselves through their eyes. We see what God reveals when we are present to others. As Cardinal
Newman said, “God shall call on me, and I will hear the Lord.”

I write to you today with great excitement and enormous pride as the Cardinal Newman community
undergoes a significant change in order to continue to create an educational environment rich in
excellence, challenge and commitment to our mission, for meeting the needs of our students.
In an effort to increase student productivity, creativity and innovation, we are actively engaging our
faculty and support staff in initial discussions and professional development opportunities identifying
how to incorporate the expanded use of technology while using individual student and teacher
devices as learning and teaching tools. We will continue to build the success of our school-wide
academic programs ensuring that Cardinal Newman High School advances its reputation where
students seek a level of excellence in learning.
The construction of our first major academic facility upgrade, a new state-of-the-art three-classroom
laboratory Science building is nearly completed. We remain committed to our strategic and master site planning process, allowing for
the prioritization and identification of future building projects which will enhance and support our academic programs.
Most recently we have sent you an important invitation to participate in our Fund A Future Annual Pledge Program. Working together
as parents, alumni, and alumni parents to provide additional revenue for academic programs, co-curricular programs, and tuition
assistance creates the success and possibility for more students to take advantage of a Cardinal Newman education. We remain
enthusiastic about the challenge of working together as one community furthering the future of Catholic college prep education at
Cardinal Newman High School.

our recent successes and our exciting new programs, as we continue to work to strengthen our current priorities as an outstanding

Introducing Fr. Moses Brown as
Cardinal Newman’s new Chaplain
Cardinal Newman is proud to welcome Fr. Moses Brown as our Chaplain.
As a Sonoma County native, Fr. Moses attended the SRJC and Sonoma
State University before entering the seminary. He is a wonderful addition
to the ministry of the school, serving as Chaplain and teacher, as well as
a positive role model within the Cardinal Newman community.
“I love being the new Chaplain at Cardinal Newman High School for many reasons. I knew that I would be
teaching and preaching, but I also became involved in types of ministry that were new to me. I can’t share
all of those ways in one article, but I can share one that is really enjoyable. We all know that the Chaplain
ministers to the needs of the students, but he also ministers to the needs of the faculty. This includes
supporting them as they pray in their classrooms or teach lessons rooted in some part of the Catholic
tradition. There are Catholic aspects of Social Studies, Art, Physical Sciences and Literature. I am amazed
at the contributions Catholic people have made to the development of these fields. For example, it was
a Catholic priest who first had the idea of some kind of “Big Bang”. His idea was that the universe could
not have been always existent or eternal. Many physicists at the turn of the century believed this. If the
universe itself is eternal, what then of God? And
what then could we say of the fact that things appear
everywhere to have a beginning and an end? In
exploring the physical aspects of the world and what
we can observe in the greater universe, physicists
gave the theory of the structure it has today. Simply
put, the universe appears that it had some starting
point. We still do not really know how big it is or
what is in every part of it. According to Scripture,
God knows the foundations of the universe and
understands the nature of reality, because He made
everything. (Job 38-40) It brings joy to my heart to think about all the
wonderful contributions Catholics have made to the
arts and sciences throughout human history. It also
brings me a lot of hope to think about all that our
Cardinal Newman graduates do and will do in the
future for the advancement of human knowledge and
the authentic development of the human person.”

The Cardinal Newman High School community is both honored and thrilled to accept two new endowed
gifts with investment proceeds to be used to support the new Academic Support Center.
Robin and Chris Leinen, parents of twins, Maggie and Max, Class of 2013, have generously named their
gift, The Elfi Bailey Endowment, honoring the work, dedication and tremendous commitment performed
by Mrs. Bailey, member of the Counseling Department, while working to support the academic goals and
educational endeavors for hundreds of students at Ursuline High School and now at Cardinal Newman.
Leinen Family
Robin and Chris contribute enthusiastically because
they “believe that the Academic Support Center is an
important piece of the academic puzzle for Cardinal
Newman”. The Leinen Family gift allows us to provide
students with extra resources and academic assistance
for our students’ learning process. Additionally, and
under the direction of Kris Davison, Academic Support
Center Director, we will pursue an organized program
approach for providing parent education evenings
targeted on topics of diverse learning styles.
Our Academic Support Center efforts have also drawn the generosity from Becky Scrivanich and Luke
Scrivanich, parents of Luke Scrivanich II ’10, Lena Scrivanich UHS ’11, Marigrace Scrivanich ’13, Nick
Scrivanich ’18, and Eric Scrivanich ‘20. The Scrivanich
Family has named their gift the Luke Scrivanich II,
Class of 2010 Memorial Scholarship. Becky and Luke
proudly honor Luke, “who devoted his life to serving
his friends and family in time of need.” This memorial
scholarship comes as a loving tribute to Luke, to the
current and future Cardinal Newman students who
are academically successful and would benefit from
taking their talent to the next level.
This tremendous support confirms our goal for
offering an Academic Support Center philosophy,
which creates a niche that no other school in our
surrounding area offers. Our program support
will include helping students assess, identify and

advocate for their individual needs, while developing practical skills to carry with them as they enter college
and participate in their global learning community following graduation.

ACADEMIC
SUPPORT CENTER (ASC)
The 2015-16 school year marks the commencement
of Cardinal Newman High School’s Academic Support
Center (ASC). The mission of the ASC is to provide the
support needed to allow all Cardinal Newman High
School students to become successful learners.
This support includes assisting students in academic
and world strategies that will allow them to become
self-advocates by knowing and understanding their
own personal strengths and challenges. Our goal is to
create a positive learning environment where all learners
are supported in the way that encourages optimal
learning and personal growth. Students will discover the
accommodations that will aid them in their endeavors at Cardinal Newman,
while developing a “set of tools” to take with them after high school. Ms. Kristina Davison, licensed in both general and special education, is Cardinal
Newman’s full-time Director of the Academic Support Center. In addition to working
with students during the school day, Ms. Davison aides CN faculty by introducing
new teaching strategies and showing how to make accommodations for students
who have learning differences. There are several programs in place that will aid
students who have been diagnosed with learning differences. Cardinal Newman
High School is happy to offer this new program to our students.

COLLEGE COUNSELING
CARDINAL NEWMAN’S COUNSELING DEPARTMENT provides comprehensive counseling services to
meet the personal, academic, and college/career counseling needs of each student. Our seven counselors
and supervised intern(s) work with students and their families to help them navigate their way through the
high school experience. Our Licensed Marriage Family Therapist and Pupil Personnel Services Counselors
offer our students and their family comprehensive and confidential professional counseling to support
students’ personal growth and academic progress. Services include individual and family counseling,
crisis intervention and referrals to, and collaboration with, community resources. The College/Career
Counselors work with students to monitor individual academic progress and goals, offer guidance during
the college admission process, and provide Standardized Testing opportunities and strategies. Additional
events including family Sophomore Planning sessions, Class-level Parent Nights, Financial Aid Information
Nights, College Testing Nights, and other special
programs give parents and students
further opportunities for
academic, personal and college/career
guidance. Our newly-opened Academic
Support Center provides ongoing support
for our students displaying documented learning
needs to achieve academic self esteem and become
successful learners in the Cardinal Newman community. This
support includes facilitating self-advocacy and helping students
to understand the accommodations that will assist them as they move
forward both here at Cardinal Newman and in their post high-school
endeavors.

FULL SIX-YEAR TERM OF
ACCREDITATION FROM WCEA
After an 18-month accreditation process commencing in May 2015, Cardinal
Newman High School received a full six year term of accreditation from the
Western Catholic Education Association (WCEA).
This is granted when a school earns high accolades in the areas of academic
excellence, Catholic identity, co-curricular programs, student support, and
effective strategic planning and fundraising. This accreditation affirms the
professionalism, care and commitment to the moral and spiritual education of
our faculty, staff and school leaders, and is supported by outstanding student
achievement and the support of our parents and community.

INTERNATIONAL
STUDENT PROGRAM
The Cardinal Newman High School International Student Program provides
opportunities to students from other countries to prepare for college in
the United States. In its sixth year, the program is currently comprised of
students from Austria, China, Denmark, Japan, and South Korea. There
have recently been students enrolled from Germany, Italy, and Spain as well.
While students from many of the European nations come for a single year or
semester, the students from the Asian countries choose to attend Cardinal
Newman for greater educational opportunity, with plans to earn college
degrees in the USA.
Senior spotlight: Zhen Hu, pictured here with her host parents Marc and
Carolyn Selivanoff, has performed in the “So Show Me” talent show every
year. Zhen has taken full advantage of the many opportunities at Cardinal
Newman by competing in Tennis and running for the Track and Field team.
She is currently earning a grade point average above a 4.0.
Cardinal Newman High School invites our wonderful community of families
to host international students for one or multiple years. Many parents have chosen to host
students after their seniors graduate and move to college. For families who think their
household may be a good fit to host an international student at Cardinal Newman.

OXFORD SCHOLARS- FALL
This year’s Oxford
Scholar students are:
Spencer Almy
On November 17, 2015, in the Fireplace Room, the Newman Oxford Scholars
gathered for dinner and to present their topics to an audience of families,
teachers, and fellow students from the Political Club. The Election of 2016
was the focus and the students chose topics about issues they believe
will play a role in the voting decisions next year. Well fed by Chef Thom of
Epicurean and staff, eschewing the traditional rubber chicken type food of
political dinners, the Scholars gave insight and evidence in a reasoned and
thoughtful evening of presentation and questioning. Wide-ranging from
World Affairs to Domestic Policy to Civil Rights, the students submitted their
papers ahead, we posted them online for wider review, and they defended
their work live. Jeff Scharfen, Esq., and CN English teacher, again reviewed
the work and posed the questions. From the quality of thought, we have

STUDENT LIFE
Freshman Retreat
“JOURNEY”
The Freshman Class Retreat centered on the theme of pilgrimage. The aim of the retreat was to help the
freshmen understand that their high school experience, and life itself, as a pilgrimage; a journey during which
they experience the presence of God and the support of family and friends. The actual journey to Cloverleaf
Ranch also served as an opportunity to strengthen the friendship and camaraderie of the class.
The students gathered at the Cardinal Newman ACC with their pilgrimage group led by, in most cases,
the same Link Crew leaders from freshmen orientation. The Link Crew, trained by Mrs. Alice Meyer, did an
outstanding job in providing the freshmen with quality group facilitation. Faculty members also joined the
groups and spent time getting to know their students outside the classroom.
Senior Campus Ministry class students helped prepare the day’s activities and served as peer leaders during
the retreat. Our chaplain, Fr. Moses Brown, sent the students off on their pilgrimage with a blessing.
Groups posed for photos as they began their trek through our neighbors, the Sieberts, vineyards. Soon the
freshmen reached their destination of Cloverleaf Ranch, owned by Ursuline alumna, Shawna DeGrange ‘00.
The freshmen spent the morning enjoying the outdoors as they played games, spent time in reflection and
shared in small groups to get to know each other better. The students enjoyed a lunch from Home Run Pizza
served by parent volunteers. The retreat culminated in group presentations reflecting their retreat experience. All in all, the freshmen began their high school journey with a fun day of bonding and shared experience.
Sophomore Retreat
“CALLED”
This year our Sophomore Class Retreat took place on two
consecutive Mondays in September at the nearby Mary Agatha
Furth Center. Though the students were grouped by gender, both
retreats focused on the theme of being called – called to holiness,
called to community and called to service. The boys’ retreat began with Stephen Morris, Director of Youth
Ministry for the Diocese of Santa Rosa, delivering an inspiring
talk on the personal call to holiness. The day continued with
high-energy activities as well as small group discussions. The
sophomore boys wrote notes of encouragement and assembled
more than eighty “blessing bags” filled with small toiletries, snacks
and personal items for local homeless shelters to distribute.
The girls’ retreat included a thoughtful opening message and
prayer from Fr. Abel Mena. The girls enjoyed engaging large group
activities and lots of small group discussions and bonding.
Senior students from ASB and Campus Ministry classes volunteered
their time to act as small group leaders and offered words of
wisdom to the sophomores at both retreats. Many faculty and staff
members joined the retreats and enjoyed the time getting to know
their students outside the classroom. Although physically not far
from campus, the students were truly able to take a day to be in
fellowship and community, relax, play and pray together. 10

Thanks to the many agencies listed to the right that were able
to send representatives to our Annual Service Learning Fair.
This is nowhere near an exhaustive list. We sent over eighty
invitations and work regularly with many cash- and personnelstrapped non-profits and we fully-understand the demands on
our service partners, and we are grateful to those who were able
to take the time to join us for the day. Many non-profit companies
listed below are providing mentors and work closely with our
students providing them immeasurable opportunities. We hope
our students gained broad exposure to much of the good being
done in our broader community. Thank you!

We could not have had such a successful event without our
parent volunteers! CN parents helped in every aspect of the
day such as helping with meals and treats, decorations, set up,
servers, flower arrangers, and greeters to help our visitors feel
more comfortable.

Father-Son Mass & Barbecue
The annual Father/Son Mass & Barbecue was held
on Sunday, September 20, 2015. This is a special
day for fathers and sons, grandfathers and uncles to
spend time with each other. Following Mass, guests
were divided into groups, rotating between sports:
basketball and sack races. It’s fun to watch the
dads and sons playing together as teammates. The
“competitive” sports day ended with a delicious hot
dog barbecue.

being used to address the social issues of their service work. Seniors are tracking
their efforts by creating and regularly-updating a service project portfolio which
includes their Proposal, Contract, Goals, Scholarly Research, Time Log, Journal Log
and overall evidence of service work. In addition, seniors have created a Weebly
Service Project webpage that allows for creative postings of English, Religion
and CBSL curriculum. These websites will be made available to the public in April
when Senior Boards take place. Our English department has been instrumental in
establishing this move toward integrating technology into the CBSL curriculum.

The class of 2017 has formally started to investigate and establish service projects
of their own. Junior students have obtained a copy of the Service Project Booklet,
Instruction and Guidelines. The first step taken by our junior students has involved
becoming familiar with the overall service project process through instruction from
their Religion teachers. There has been a formal meeting between junior and
senior students where advice was offered in regards to developing projects. The
service project advice given to the junior class by the senior class was a valuable
lesson. Currently, the junior class is to completing service hours investigating
potential projects and formally proposing these project ideas. Upon our return from
Christmas break the class of 2017 will refine their project ideas and formalize them
by completing a service project contract, goals, and complete scholarly research
addressing the social issue of their proposed service projects. By the end of the
third quarter, these projects will be well underway and will be carried-out through
their senior year.

“CHERISH YESTERDAY, LIVE FOR TODAY, REACH FOR TOMORROW”
2015 JUNIOR RING CEREMONY
Marking the passage of the Junior Class of 2017 into the
community of Cardinal Newman upperclassmen, this year’s
Junior Ring Ceremony was a memorable event. Each
junior received a Saint Christopher medal symbolizing the
transitional journey that junior year represents, as well as
a prayer for prudence as they move forward this year. In
addition, each junior received a Holy Card of Saint Francis.
The medals, cards and rings were blessed by Fr. Moses.
As families and parents watched, and as the Saint Francis
prayer was sung, juniors processed into the gym where the
tone of the ceremony was one of respect and honor.
President Laura Held opened the ceremony with a deeply
thoughtful reflection of the theme chosen by the Junior
Class Council “Cherish Yesterday, Live for Today and Reach
for Tomorrow”.
Ursuline High School alumna, Christina Messer ’08, and Principal Graham Rutherford ’77 shared what their
Junior Ring ceremonies meant for them and how, as the years have passed, the significance of community
has come full circle.
Many junior students commented that this ceremony truly represented a milestone in their high school career
and one that reminded them of the responsibility they hold as upperclassmen.
JOG-A-THON
The Cardinal Newman Jog-a-Thon took place on
Wednesday, September 30, 2015, where students circled
the track to raise funds for their school. It’s not too late to
support your favorite jogger or make a tax-deductible gift
in support of a mobile snack bar and a classroom heating/
cooling system!
The annual jog-a-thon has brought many exciting things
to campus in the past, such as football field lights, field
house/snack shack, women’s locker room and shower
facilities, and expansion of field bleachers to name a
few. This is the only student-run fundraiser Cardinal
Newman holds and we encourage students to have a
vested interest in the jog-a-thon goals and expect 100%
participation. This year, we worked with an outside company to reduce our fundraising costs by utilizing a
more tech-savvy email/texting system rather than disbursing the high costs associated with paper, copying
and postage required to send the thousands of letters out to possible donors. Show your support and

THE ARTS
“Godspell” -Dramatic Arts Production
The Cardinal Newman Dramatic Arts Department presented the Rock Musical, “Godspell”, for the 2015
Winter show. Directed by Dramatic Arts Director, Carl Hamilton, with three performances at the Raven
Theater in Healdsburg on November 19, 20 and 21, the show featured 12 songs and 8 dances. Sonoma
County Musical Director, Lucas Sherman, along with Choreographer, Holly Sheen, began rehearsals in late
August. “Godspell” was the first major musical theatre offering from 3-time Grammy and Academy Award-winner
Stephen Schwartz (Wicked, Pippin, Children Of Eden); and it took the world by storm. Led by the international
hit, “Day By Day”, “Godspell” features a parade of beloved songs including “Prepare Ye The Way Of The
Lord”, “Learn Your Lessons Well”, “All For The Best”, “All Good Gifts”, “Turn Back, O Man”, and “By My Side”. In this production, a small group of people help Jesus Christ to tell different parables by using a wide variety
of games, storytelling techniques, and a hefty dose of comic timing. An eclectic blend of songs ranging
in style from pop to vaudeville is employed as the story of Jesus’ life dances across the stage. Dissolving
hauntingly into the Last Supper and the Crucifixion, Jesus’ messages of kindness, tolerance, and love come
vibrantly to life.
“Godspell” featured 10 Cardinal Newman actors, Shannon Stark, Leonette Miksis, Stephanie Azcarate,
Maya Cerney, Jasmine Janisch, Liliana vanZutphen, Bella Bellizzi and Faith Lee. Seniors Victoria O’Neill and
Alexandra Relota provided technical assistance backstage. Arts at Cardinal Newman & Intersession
The Cardinal Newman High School two-day Intercession Program will happen January 7th and 8th. The Arts
are again well represented. Some of the favorites from last year are back again, some with a few new additions. Our photography teacher, Rory McNamara, will be taking students to the Laguna De La Santa Rosa to
practice landscape photography before gathering in the classroom dark rooms to develop the images with
some further manipulation in Photoshop. More photography experiences are to be had with English teacher,
Eleanor Trent’s, intercession class. She describes it as “… fun and wildly creative photography that seeks to
capture the periphery, the liminal, the not-quite apparent parts of our experience. See what emerges in random photos – those things on the edge that we tend to miss because they can’t be codified. “
Dramatic Arts students will study four of the major stage plays that have been adapted to the screen, Into The
Woods, Damn Yankees, The Crucible and Cabaret. Drama teacher, Carl Hamilton, will lead and direct the
discussion and analysis before and after the students view each production.
Gabrielle Thompson, Newman’s dance teacher, will take a group of dancers to San Francisco for a day of
intensive dance workshops and classes at the OCD Dance Studio. Joey Castor and Garrick Maul will be
leading an Art Welding workshop in a fully-equipped studio. By the end of the session, each student will
have produced either abstract or representation works with guidance from the directors. This popular session
allows students to work with real welding equipment and metals.
Morris Acevedo, the Cardinal Newman music teacher, will take students interested in music studio production,
digital filmmaking, animation, graphic design, motion video graphics, and more on a tour of several creative
hot spots in the Berkeley and Emeryville area, including the Expressions School, the California Jazz Academy,
the Crucible School of Industrial Arts, followed by tours of some area concert halls. The day will conclude with
a dinner in Berkeley at Shattuck Avenue’s Gourmet Ghetto.
There are many more creative intercession classes led by various faculty and staff members. This is a
wonderful program modeled after intercessions which regularly take place at other high schools and colleges.
Performance wise, the Drama Department’s production of the world famous musical, Godspell took place
on November 19th through 21st. The Dance Department’s production featuring greatest hits from Broadway
Musicals took place on December 1st & 2nd. There will also be an evening winter music concert with the
Ensemble Class and various members of the Guitar Class on Dec. 7.

FALL SPORTS 2015
MEN’S WATER POLO
The Cardinal Newman Men’s Water Polo
team braved the early morning practices
at SRJC and had a tremendous season.
The varsity boys finished with a final record of 14-11, finishing 6th out of 12 teams
in MCAL, led by senior Jack Stafford who
set school records in every offensive
category for the season and for a career.
Jack finished with over 200 goals scored
and was the leading goal scorer in the
entire state of California! This year’s team
was led by a large group of seniors, Jack
Stafford, Devin Farber, Nick Uebel, Elliott
Goldberg, Sean Houlihan, Brock Bauer
Matt Van Prooyen, Nolan Pisors, Max
Mokvyts, and Liam Green. All players had
a part in making it to NCS play-offs.
WOMEN’S WATER POLO
The women's water polo team has grown in size with a total of
30 girls combined on both teams, JV and Varsity. The Varsity
team played well and learned a lot competing against tough
competition in the MCAL. The team continued to improve
its skills individually and as a team throughout the season.
The team will miss the current seniors’ leadership and heart
next year. Alicia Castaneda, Addison Edgar, Megan Cannon,
Lilly Scholz, Jacquelyn George and Sophie Headley are the
six seniors that will graduate in May. The Junior Varsity team
consisted of all new-comers to water polo. They learned a lot
and are excited about next year.

the first time in a number of years and
we are extremely excited about the
future of Cardinal Newman water polo.
Sophomores Sam Conti and Casey
Frazier were both able to contribute on
the Varsity team this season. The JV team
was comprised completely of students
that had never played water polo before
the season began. They made incredible
strides as the year progressed and they
had a ton of fun along the way. The
coaches couldn’t be prouder of their
positive attitudes and team spirit!
SPORTS UPDATES
CROSS COUNTRY
The term “historic” is often employed
haphazardly, but in the case of the 2015
season of Cardinal Newman Cross
Country, it is quite poignant. The Varsity
Boys team, led by the sophomore
tandem of Dominic Natale and Dylan
Kattengell, has emerged as a contender
for a top-5 finish at the North Coast
Section Championships—something
a CN boy’s squad has not done since
2011. For the Varsity Girls, they have
established themselves as the greatest
team in school history, as they have
garnered a #2 ranking in the North
Coast Section while shattering six school
records—four team time marks and
two individual marks set by sophomore
newcomer Kasey Braun. Overall, five
athletes (Natale, Braun, Noel Clark, Eliana
Heath, and Lillian Larson) earned AllNBL honors this season, and with only
one of 14 varsity athletes graduating,
this program is looking to establish itself
as an annual contender at the CIF State
Championships.

CHEER
A CNHS cheerleader’s season begins during the summer
and continues through Football play-offs. In June they
began practice, in July they attended a UCA Cheer Camp in
Sacramento, and in August they learned their choreography
for the upcoming football season. The cheer team continued
to practice one day a week as they continued to build their
skill set. Although there were only nine girls, this team showed
their strength in areas other than numbers. They worked hard,
became a very close-knit family, and were very determined to
be their very best on and off the field. They held “team dinners”
every Friday night before a game, which helped them to build a
strong teamwork foundation. For their first season together they
represented CNHS very well!

FALL SPORTS 2015
VARSITY VOLLEYBALL
The 2015 varsity volleyball team has been very successful! From the
time open gyms began in July through November, the season has
provided many highlights.
The first glimpse that the Cardinals had a chance to have a
truly special season was in September when the team won the
Healdsburg Invitational Volleyball Tournament. The Cardinals went
5-0, beating common Division IV teams. The 5-0 start helped the
Cardinals jump out to a 10-0 record to begin the season and the
team kept moving forward from there. As the league season began, the competition increased, but the
team continued its march forward. The Cardinals beat solid teams
from Ukiah, Casa Grande, Windsor, and Rancho. When the Cardinals
faced the pre-season favorite, Montgomery, the team found itself on
the losing end of the match after defeating the Vikings earlier in the Sonoma Valley High School Tournament.
After a heart-wrenching loss to Maria Carrillo, the team looked forward to the second half of its league
season.
The team’s goal was to be a perfect 7-0 in the second half of league and they came only another loss to
Maria Carrillo away, going 6-1. The team finished 10-4 in league and 20-5. The NBL Championships were
ahead, and the team, who had earned the second seed, was ready to play. After defeating Windsor, the
Cardinals played Maria Carrillo once again for the Championship. After one of the most amazing matches
played in some time, the Cardinals defeated the Pumas in 5 games, with a score of 18-16 in the deciding
game. The win was the first for Cardinal Newman over Maria Carrillo in 14 years and was a great way to send
the Cardinals into the NCS tournament.
JV VOLLEYBALL
This year’s JV volleyball team posted a very
impressive 21-4 overall record and won the
NBL JV championship with 13 wins & 1 loss.
Sophomores Ava Alvarez, Ava Lepe and Kaitlyn
Ryan (team captain) consistently demonstrated
key leadership that pulled our team together in a
number of critical points of close matches.
The team’s play was characterized by a
willingness to work hard, trust in fellow
teammates and courage in the face of adversity,
not normally seen at the JV level. Most
importantly, each student-athlete learned to
compete in the true Newman spirit and was an
outstanding representative of the school.

The Cardinal Volleyball team entered the North
Coast Section tournament playing some of its best
volleyball and soundly defeated Roseland Prep in
the first round, and Justin Siena in the second. The
semi-final match against St. Patrick’s/St. Vincent’s
loomed and in the end, the Bruins proved too
much for the Cardinals and ended their season one
match before the finals. FROSH VOLLEYBALL
This year the Cardinal Newman freshmen volleyball
team included 17 hard-working, dedicated players.
The team finished the season with a record of 6-6
with a great performance at the American Canyon
Volleyball Tournament finishing in the top 4. Coach
Andrews feels blessed to have coached such a
great group of players. Many thanks to the team
representative, Ellyn, for her team coordination and
communication.
SPORTS UPDATES
FROSH FOOTBALL
The 2015 freshman football season began with a hard-fought
win against a strong Division 1 opponent. Following the win
against Napa High School, the team traveled to Stockton to play
Saint Mary’s. In week three, the team played their third away
game at Clayton Valley to close out the non-league schedule.
After starting the season with one victory and two losses, the
Cardinal Newman freshman team opened league play with their
first home game against Ukiah. The team put together seven
straight victories against traditional league rivals and closed
out the season at home against Casa Grande. The Cardinal
Newman freshman team outscored their league opponents
223 to 26 and captured a well-earned league title.
The freshman team had many great accomplishments on
the field, but the coaching staff was more impressed with
the high character of the young men rather than their athletic
achievement. The many coaches, teachers and school officials
who followed the team this season look forward to watching as
these hard-working individuals excel athletically, academically
and within the Cardinal Newman community.
JV FOOTBALL
The JV football season concluded with an exciting 14-14
tie to Windsor. The team finished with a record of 9-0-1, an
outstanding undefeated season! The players played well
together and made the coaches proud every week showing
exemplary traits of hard work and determination. Coach Sexton
would like to recognize the efforts of his players and the way
they played hard every Friday night. The future of Cardinal
Newman football looks bright! Coach Sexton would also like to
thank his coaching staff, Frank Marshall, Judd Foell, Dan Tynan,
Larry Arterberry, and Tyler Laron for their time and dedication to
the season! VARSITY FOOTBALL
It has been a joy to experience the 2015 football season with the young
men on this team. It has been a pleasure to watch the seniors grow
into the great leaders they have become. The underclassmen have
been blessed with great leadership and have learned to work hard to
achieve the goals set by the upperclassmen.
The 2015 varsity team is NBL Champion and was seeded second in
the NCS playoff bracket before being defeated by Marin Catholic in
the championship game. Thanks to the parents and families for all the
support you have shown through the journey.

JV SOCCER
With a couple of impressive pre-season victories against
neighboring Roseland Collegiate Prep, it seems as if the JV
girls were set to begin an excellent season. Unfortunately, and
strangely mirroring the varsity team, the team was hampered by a
series of injuries all season, with one forcing team captain Haley
Robertson out for the second consecutive season (broken ribs
last year, and a debilitating concussion this year.) With a unique
mix of different strengths, and a wide range of personalities, they
competed fiercely
during each game,
coming together
as teammates. At
Piner High School,
they played an
impressive match
with only 9 players
versus Piner’s
roster of 19, and
played to a 0-0
draw, eliciting awe and some very nice compliments from the
Piner coaches and players. No matter the challenges, they gamely
continued to work hard during both practices and games, never
giving up, supporting each other, and working as a team every
single day. The epitome of never giving up!

WOMEN’S VARSITY SOCCER
Even though the team lost two veteran players over the
summer to ACL injuries (Julia Hasson and Lauren Miller),
with the help of some very talented incoming freshmen they
started off dominating, playing extremely well in the preseason and coming into league play with a 5-2 record. With
an exceptionally well-played home opener against Rancho
Cotati, the team was poised to place high in the league.
In a series of unfortunate and devastating injuries the girls
lost three of the freshmen for the season, and the rest of
the team was plagued with injuries, including a couple of
concussions. In the face of adversity they relied on their
team bond and valiantly went on to each competition playing
with heart and determination. At times, with only one player on the bench to look to, things seemed very
daunting, but they were able to stay competitive, and made it into the opening round of NCS playoffs, where
they lost to Petaluma in a very physical game. They gave the season all they had, and to top it off, six players
were All-League selections; Megan Bertolone and Amara Ortiz were on First Team, Megan Moore and
Dani Gilson were Second Team, and Sheare Ford-Barrera and Maddie Foster each received an Honorable
Mention. Well done!

WOMEN’S TENNIS
The CN Women’s Varsity Tennis Team had a very successful
season. The Cardinals finished with a 15-2 overall record and a
13-1 league record earning the second NBL title in three years. With the senior captain leadership in Elissa Papale and Allison
Brutocao, the team became stronger with every match played.
Our singles line-ups were lead by Anna Hartmann (12-2 in league),
Molly Wolmuth (undefeated at #2 singles), Rachael McGregor
(13-1 in league) and Gigi Swenson-Aguirre (undefeated at #4
singles). Our doubles teams were very strong as well. Tasha
Schafer and Elissa Papale (13-1 at #1 doubles), Grace Nonella and
Natalia Gamba ( 11-3 at #2 doubles), and Ana Negri and Mimi Almy
(undefeated at #3 doubles). Women’s Tennis played Justin Siena at home for the first round of
NCS Team Competition.

Doubles tournament, and represented Cardinal Newman in NCS
Doubles competition.
WOMEN’S VARSITY GOLF
The 2015 Women’s Varsity Golf season was very good! The
girls had a winning season in the North Bay League with an 11-3
record and went on to play in post- season tournaments. Natalie
Justice (11) won second place as an individual with a score of
89 and Emily Pham (11) placed third with a score of 91 in the NBL
Tournament played at Bennett Valley Golf Course. The team
qualified for the North Coast Section Division II Championship
and placed sixth overall in that tournament. Emily Pham and
Natalie Justice were named All-League, First Team in the NBL
and Sarah Knight (12) was named All-League, Second Team in the
NBL. Grace Cose (9), Maddy Figueroa (9), and Alexis Allen (12)
improved their scores by two strokes during the season, which
helped in league and post season play. Addie Matulaitis (10) and
Olivia Almy (10) contributed to this season with solid supporting
scores in some of our league matches. Beginners Beatrice
Njoroge (11) and Lys Taddei (9) round out the golf team, practiced
every week, and look to play in future matches. Congratulations
Girls! Go Newman!

Alumni and CN Community Helps Make
Career Day a Success!
Cardinal Newman High School’s Career Day was
held on Wednesday, October 14, 2015. Career
Day is an opportunity for students to learn about a
variety of careers and what it takes to be successful
in college and beyond. Thirty-four people, made
up of CN/UHS alumni and our community, gave
presentations to our students, and discussed what
inspired them to pursue their chosen careers, the
educational requirements necessary, the rewards
and what real-world problems they encountered.
Along with bringing real-world experiences to
the table, the alumni discussed the value of their
education at Cardinal Newman and the paths
they took to get where they are today. Keynote
speaker, Judge Patrick Broderick ‘79, Superior
Court Judge in Sonoma County, spoke about
how important it is to enjoy what you do and how
your path may change. He also spoke of how
important high school is; how it’s the starting block
to everything else that will come in your life. These
speakers generously gave their time to share their
experiences and advice in classroom sessions.

Given that Jerry
Robinson ’75 graduated
from CN before going on to be a 3-time AllAmerican for the UCLA Bruins, drafted in the
first round for to the Philadelphia Eagles where
he played in Super Bowl XV, and later playing
for the Los Angeles Raiders, Cardinal Newman
High School was inducted into the Super Bowl
High School Honor Roll. CNHS received a
Golden Football to commemorate this honor
and it is proudly displayed in the Cardinal
Newman Main Office.

Martha King
Academic Support Director
College Counselor
Ms. Davison joined the Cardinal
Newman community in July 2015. A Sonoma County native, she
and her family had spent the
last 15 years in the State of Utah
and embraced the opportunity
to move back to their roots. Kris
comes to Cardinal Newman
as the Director of the new Academic Support Center. She has a B.A. in Special Education and a Master’s in
Education. Licensed in K-8 General Education, PreK12+ Special Education, High School (special ed) Math,
Jr. High Math and School Administration, Ms. Davison is
passionate about being a lifelong learner and currently
pursuing a Doctoral Degree in Education. As an educator,
her goal is to facilitate self-esteem, individual learning
and personal growth for every student. In her time away from school, she most enjoys travel and
spending time with her family, including five children and
seven grand children. Jose Garcia
Maintenance
Jose Garcia is from Michoacan,
Mexico. He came to the United
States eight years ago.
He is married with two sons, ages
11 and 21, Omar and Juaquin. He
enjoys working here at Cardinal
Newman taking care of the Gym,
ACC, Retreat Center, and Field Operations areas. In his
spare, time he plays basketball and enjoys hunting, fishing
and camping.
Martha has been a part of the
Cardinal Newman community for
the past nine years as a parent
of three CN alums, as well as
a member of the Admissions/
Enrollment Committee. Martha
joins the Counseling department
this year as the Counselor for the
Class of 2018. She has a B.S. from Georgetown University
and a College Counseling Certificate, with distinction, from
UCLA. She enjoys working with students on all aspects of
academic and college advising. In her spare time, Martha
enjoys playing golf, skiing, cooking and reading. She and
her husband enjoy traveling, especially visiting their three
sons on the east coast.

Dr. SheriAnn Simpson attended
Saint Mary’s College at Notre
Dame, Indiana for her B.A.
Though a first-generation college
student, with scholarships and
help from wonderful teachers,
SheriAnn was able to study
abroad in Spain. She went on to get a Master’s in
Spanish at Northwestern University, where she then
taught freshmen Spanish and directed Spanish courses
and faculty for many years. She was able to work daily
with teachers and technology, to create innovative web
projects, and was very active with student community
service. She also lived and taught ESL in Spain and
Mexico, and was fortunate enough to live in Munich,
Germany.
SheriAnn later continued for her Ph.D. in Education with a
focus on leadership for technology and bilingual learners.
She attended the Tecnologico de Monterrey in Mexico.

AUGUST 11, 2015
The Class of 2019 was welcomed by the Link Crew of
Cardinal Newman High School. This was a joyous occasion
for the students, families, faculty and staff. The Link Crew
prepared a fun program with the support and guidance
of Mrs. Alice Meyer (Theology) and Mrs. Tracy Williams
(Freshmen Counselor). The Class of 2019 is comprised of
students from over 30 middle schools. Their character and
promise made for a positive series of ice breaking exercises
and discussions. We have great expectations this class
will impact our community with their talent, effort, care and
service to others.

Nearly 300 people attended our annual Open House admission
event on Sunday, October 4. The parent association, Mom’s
Club, Dad’s Club, Associated Student Body, and faculty devoted
their Sunday to host a fun and informative event to families
researching Cardinal Newman High School. We are especially
thankful for the tireless generosity of Carol Drake, a dear friend
to Cardinal Newman. Carol coordinated a food service for all
the guests on that day, which was first for Open House.
Thank you to G & G Market for providing the food.
Besides the addition of food, another new twist at Open House
involved the Visual and Performing Art students and teachers
from Dance, Photography, Theatre, and Music classes. Mr. Carl
Hamilton arranged performances from the fall musical, Godspell,
be performed by the actors (actresses). Mrs. Gabby Thompson
led the CN Dancers in numbers from the upcoming winter show,
Razzle Dazzle. Seniors, Rita Hu and Massie Fu played piano in
between classroom presentations as well. Mr. Morris Acevedo
support the technical set up and gave guitar
lessons to performing students during the
Open House for all to see.

Since the last year for the Ursuline Polenta Feed
was in 2014, CNHS welcomed the chance to
continue the tradition as it was blended into the
Cardinal Newman Fun in the Fall Wine Tasting event,
which took place on Saturday, October 24, 2015,
and included nearly 30 local wineries and breweries
pouring award-winning wine and brew. Over 300
guests gathered in the ACC for wine tasting and
mouth-watering appetizers prepared by many
parent volunteers. After the wine tasting portion of
the evening, guests moved into the CN Gym where
they enjoyed a wonderful polenta dinner, along with
tri-tip cooked by members of our Alumni Committee
and Dads’ Club, and dessert prepared by Costeaux
Bakery. “The Hots” entertained us with old-school
rock. The dance floor got a real work-out!

This was an enjoyable venue for the Class of 1975’s
40-year class reunion! These classmates had
special reserved seating and they were able to
enjoy the night mingling with friends of yesteryear
