January 25, 2015 - Ascension School
A Stewardship Parish, Sharing Our God -Given Gifts in Service 3rd Sunday in Ordinary Time - January 25, 2015 Take time this week to reflect on today’s readings: First Reading — Jonah 3:1-5, 10 Psalm — Psalm 25:4-9 Second Reading — 1 Corinthians 7:29-31 Gospel — Mark 1:14-20 READINGS FOR THE WEEK Monday: 2 Tm 1:1-8 or Ti 1:1-5; Ps 96:1-3, 7-8a, 10; Mk 3:22-30 Tuesday: Heb 10:1-10; Ps 40:2, 4ab, 7-8a, 10, 11; Mk 3:31-35 Wednesday: Heb 10:11-18; Ps 110:1-4; Mk 4:1-20 Thursday: Heb 10:19-25; Ps 24:1-6; Mk 4:21-25 Friday: Heb 10:32-39; Ps 37:3-6, 23-24, 39-40; Mk 4:26-34 Saturday: Heb 11:1-2, 8-19; Lk 1:69-75; Mk 4:35-41 Reflecting on God’s Word First apprentice, then journeyman, and finally master. That’s the way someone “travels” when learning a trade. But before “setting out” one must find a trustworthy master who will accept him to study with her. Then he must commit himself to the “journey” of learning the trade. By watching and listening to the master, by imitating her example and following her advice, the disciple gradually learns her “ways.” The Scriptures this week present a journeyman, Jonah, and a master, Jesus. Why did people trust and follow them? People responded to Jonah because he was traveling the way of the Lord himself; he had repented and set out on the journey of discipleship. They responded to Jesus because he was a master worthy of their trust and because he invited them to be his disciples, to walk at his side and to study his ways. People followed them not because of their words, but because they knew the way. —Virginia Stillwell Copyright © 2014, World Library Publications. All rights reserved. On behalf of Mary Jo Burns, our school community and myself, please join us for the Open House today after the 9 am Mass and continuing until 12:30 pm. Please come and pray with us on Tuesday at 9:30 am for School Mass celebrating the Feast Day of Saint Angela Merici, Foundress of the Ursuline Religious Order of Women who taught in our school for decades. As a parish with a Blue Ribbon School and almost acknowledged a second time as one but for a few percentage points, we are certainly blessed with what is happening here at Ascension because of a number of things. We have a strong leadership base with Ms. Mary Jo Burns, our noted and wonderful Principal. Thank you Mary Jo, you are the best! I also thank our two very efficient and effective Assistant Principals, Mrs. Pat Pesce and Mrs. Nell Agnew. We are also very blessed to have faculty that are so dedicated and committed to our Ascension School Program. I see your cars here early in the morning and late into the evening, as well as on Saturdays and Sundays. I thank you. We are also blessed with an active School Board that has certainly advised and shared parental wisdom with Mary Jo and I for many, many years. I thank you. Our parents have always had a vested interest and pay good attention to our school. As I have said often, “parents are the first teachers of their children in the ways of the faith. Thank you parents for the sacrifice you make in order to send your children to a Catholic School, any Catholic School not just ours. MY THANKS TO ALL OF YOU FOR MAKING ASCENSION SCHOOL SUCH AN EXCELLENT PARISH SCHOOL. TO OUR PARISH CHILDREN I THANK YOU FOR ALLOWING ME TO BE A PART OF YOUR YOUNG LIVES. YOU ARE THE FUTURE OF OUR CHURCH. MAY ALL OF YOU CONTINUE TO GROW IN AGE, GRACE AND WISDOM AS DID THE CHILD JESUS. THANKS EVERYONE. What is also so great here at Ascension is the blending and working together of our wonderful School Program and our wonderful Religious Education Program. That doesn’t always happen in parishes, but it does here. So thank you Mary Jo Burns and Diane Moriarty for having such a very good working relationship that assures the successful blending of these programs. It is great to prepare the parents and children for the Sacraments as one unit and more importantly to celebrate these Sacraments together as one parish family. Thank you to all who make that happen. We are also fortunate to have Katie Vanaria as our Director of Institutional Advancement, as well as her assistant Marybeth Granholm. Thank you both for your commitment and your hard work for Ascension School, and thank you to all of our alumni and A N U A R Y (Continued on page 3) 2 5 , 2 0 1 5 — P A G E 2 benefactors. I also thank our School and Religious Education Office Staff: Deb Morawski, Laura Allen and Kathy Marifjeren. TO ALL OF YOU HAPPY CATHOLIC SCHOOLS WEEK! Thanks to your compassion and generosity from last year’s Lenten Operation Rice Bowl Project in which we collected $14,000, we have been awarded one of two Catholic Relief Services Operation Rice Bowl Challenge Grants for the Most Expanded Participation Parish. We will be receiving a $2,000 check to help Ascension expand knowledge of the CRS Operation Rice Bowl. This indeed was a whole parish effort. How we will spend and share the grant money will be discussed and I will inform you on what we will do. The Parish Information Fair was quite interesting this past Tuesday night. Each parish had a table. I thank Christian Golden, Walter Healy, Elva Valdivia-Lynch and Bill Skalitzky for being there for us and representing Ascension. I was interviewed by three different parishes and in return interviewed them. I found this duo interview process to be quite helpful and informative. This process is going to continue a bit longer now as more parishes have openings for pastors. An expanded list is coming out this week so the process will continue into the first week of February. I will keep you updated weekly concerning this transition. Let us all pray to the Holy Spirit for guidance for all who are involved in this process. can be reached at 434-1555. I recommend both Gene and Bill to you if you are feeling the need to talk. I am still waiting for the second rebid from the other boiler company. Unfortunately for us the bid from the first company came in higher than their original bid. This project, as well as the refurbishing of our second floor of the Parish Center will be on the agenda at the Finance Committee meeting on Tuesday of this week. On behalf of our Finance Committee and myself we thank you for your generosity week after week. As a result of it we are on schedule to pay off our debt next month. WE THANK YOU! Elsewhere in our Dome is a summary of last week’s Offertory collection. Thank you for your generosity. Thank you for ALL that you do for God’s people everywhere both near and far. I pray for you every day. If you remember a few weeks ago the Morton Salt warehouse gave way to an avalanche of white crystal on a good number of cars parked next door. As it turns out, supposedly these Acura cars were all repossessed from the owners. Talk about pouring salt into your wounds! Have a good week and as always it is very, very nice to be back home with you. GOD’S BLESSINGS! I see where the U.S. Forest Service has decided not to spend ten million dollars on trying to come up with something to brand themselves with. I would think that would be pretty simple with saying, “you can’t see the forest for the trees”, but we can! A reminder to our parishioners that Bill Harrison, from the Claret Center, is still with us as our parish counselor using my second floor office at the Parish Center. Bill can be contacted at (773) 643-6259 or [email protected]. Gene Wesolowski, our Assistant Pastoral Associate, is also available for you to come and talk with. Gene J A N U A R Y 2 5 , 2 0 1 5 — P A G E 3 Be Part of the 2015 Annual Catholic Appeal “Entrusted with Responsibility” Many of you may have already responded to the Annual Catholic Appeal mailing from Archbishop Cupich. On behalf of those served by the ministries and services funded by the ACA, we thank you for your gifts. In addition to providing for ministries and services throughout the Archdiocese, the appeal also funds services that are of great help to ministries here in our parish. For example, religious education, capital grants, continuing education for priests, recruitment, education and formation of lay ministers and deacons, SPRED, and the Office of Respect Life to name a few. This year, the theme of the Appeal is Entrusted with Responsibility. God pr ovides each of us with many gifts. We have a responsibility not only to recognize these gifts but also to nurture them. When our parish reaches its goal of $68,747 in paid pledges, 100% of the additional funds will be returned to us for parish use. Please consider giving to the 2015 Annual Catholic Appeal. Lent 2015 begins this year on Ash Wednesday, February 18th. Save the Dates for these Lenten Activities Mardi Gras and Palm Burning – Tuesday, February 17, 6:45 pm in the Pine Room. Fish Fry – Fr iday, Febr uar y 27, 5:30 pm to 9 pm in the Pine Room. Fish Fry – Fr iday, Mar ch 27, 5:30 pm to 9 pm in the Pine Room. Proceeds from all of these events will benefit the Children’s Lenten Project – Change for Chimbote. More information to follow. Make Your Easter Plan The heart of our year as Catholics is the threeday celebration of the passion, death, and resurrection of Jesus. Make a New Year resolution to participate in all three of the major liturgies of the Easter Triduum this year: Holy Thursday, April 2, 7:30 PM, Good Friday, April 3, 7:30 PM and the Great Easter Vigil on Holy Saturday, April 4 at 8:00 PM. Could you take Good Friday and Holy Saturday off from work so that you can fast, pray, relax and rest up for the evening liturgies? These liturgies are longer than Sunday Mass. And you may not be a night person. But making this effort once a year is so good for the soul! And your participation is a blessing for the rest of us. Bring the kids! (Of course they’ll squirm, cry, and get fidgety—that’s how they praise God.) We as a parish are at our best when we all come together. Are Your Palm Branches Looking Old? Now is the time for us to start gathering last year’s palms that we received on Palm Sunday in anticipation for burning on the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday, February 17th. Beginning next weekend, January 31st and February 1st, ther e will be a basket next to the Baptismal Font to collect them. We’ll even take those branches from two years ago! Once you form an opinion, you need to share it with others. Once your goal is set, you feel restless until you have aligned others with you. You are not frightened by confrontation; rather, you know that confrontation is the first step toward resolution. You push others to take risks. People are drawn towards you as you take a stance and ask them to move in a certain direction. While we wouldn't "command" you to do, we do invite you to learn more about Gallup's internationally-acclaimed Living Y our Strengths program offered -- at no cost to you -- by Ascension. To learn how Living Y our Strengths can help you identify the five areas of your greatest God-given talents, visit http://ascensionstrengths.eventbrite.com, where you will find the dates and times of the sessions scheduled throughout the year. FIND IT. BUILD IT. LIVE IT! J A N U A R Y 2 5 , 2 0 1 5 — P A G E 6 Ascension Youth Ministry Contact: Julie Krakora: [email protected] or 708-434-1546 Youth Ministry is about the teens, but it is also about reaching out to parents supporting teens and reaching out to young adults who are growing in their faith post college and finding a place to belong. At the end of a recent meeting of young adult women – all different ages first discussing youth ministry and then sharing life and faith – it ended with a comment. “This was like a much needed soul conversation!” As two of us were familiar with the Jesuit CLC model, it made me wonder if there are women (adults age 25 and parents of any age youth, ideally junior high and high school) who might want to meet once a week for a Lenten Small Faith Community. If this calls to you, please contact me via email. Should this happen we would probably start the week of Ash Wednesday and go through Holy Week. Share times you are free in the evening so we can accommodate the majority of interested people and your schedules. Open Gym night THIS Sunday January 25th for High School Teens. Waiver s will need to be signed for anyone under 18. So if you know you want to come, please email me beforehand to get the form. They will also be provided at the door (parent signature is required with insurance info.) Once signed, these waivers will be good for the rest of this school year. VOYAGE NIGHT (aka a J HYM event) for 7th and 8th Grade students Friday January 30th there will be pizza and a movie. Time: 6:15 – 9pm. An RSVP is appreciated simply so I can make sure we have enough food. As this is a movie night, it will also count as a Faith Booster for those currently enrolled in the Confirmation process. 8th graders, come just to come AND because I miss seeing your happy faces. Dates to keep in mind: February 18th: Lou Malnati’s Pizza Fundraiser…it’s CHEESE pizza day for Ash Wednesday! February 21st: Kids Night Out – led by HS teens and for the younger kids of the parish. This is an ASP work crew Fundraiser. January 22, 2015 marked the 42nd anniversary for Roe v. Wade. Forty two years later our country is still fighting for the rights of the most vulnerable, the unborn. Recently Pope Francis stated that "The right to life is the first among human rights." Our country is making progress in recognizing these rights. During the 2014 state legislation session lawmakers introduced 335 provisions aimed at restricting access to abortion. By the end of the year, 15 states had enacted 26 new abortion restrictions. Over the last 22 years, the number of surgical abortion mills operating in the United States has dramatically decreased from 2,176 (in 1991) to 551. The current Congress will vote on a bill in the coming week that would ban abortions 20 weeks and beyond, the bill is called the Pain Capable Unborn Child Protection Act. While these are all great strides in protecting the unborn, we can not and should not forget that each year over one million babies are lost to abortion in this country. Our most beloved Pope has told us to, "Be sanctuaries of respect for life, proclaiming the sacredness of every human life from conception to natural death." This issue should not to be coined conservative or dismissed as archaic by the liberals. It is a human rights issue. It is an issue that scientifically can no longer be debated, the information available to us through ultrasounds and in-utero testing was not available when Roe v. Wade was before the courts. Factually, it is untenable to argue that the 12 week old is not a baby. Furthermore, it is not acceptable that people continue to dismiss the pro-life movement as antiwomen; it is in defense of women. Pro-life people say this is an issue that has long term mental (and perhaps physical) detrimental effects on the woman agreeing to abort. When we give women other options in dealing with an unplanned pregnancy, such as adoption, keeping the baby, ultrasound, foster care, etc., we empower women. When we promote abortion as the only true option for women faced with an unplanned pregnancy, we marginalize them. Let's remember to continually pray for the unborn and for women faced with an unplanned pregnancy. J A N U A R Y 2 5 , 2 0 1 5 — P A G E 7 Save the Date Ministry Fair Planning Meeting - Tuesday, February 10th from 7-9 pm in the Pine Room Come share the love! We know you are passionate about your ministry and we love you for it! To help your ministry be all that it can be, we invite our ministry leaders and members to join us for desserts as we exchange ideas and plan together a successful May Ministry Fair. Minister of Care Services The winter weather can make it difficult for getting to church on Sunday. If you can not get to church and would like a Minister of Care to bring Eucharist to you in your home, please call the parish office, Susie Cahill 925-1512, Linda Dunne 848-5574 or CeCe Masella 383-3785 to make arrangements. Also, if a loved one is hospitalized, please contact the Pastoral Care Office in the hospital (almost all have one) and tell them there is wish to receive Eucharist. In case of serious illness, we will be happy to pray for your loved one at all the weekend Masses at Ascension; just call the Parish Center, 848-2703 and ask that their name be added to the weekend petitions. St. Martin’s Pantry The men who run the Pantry at St. Martin are always grateful for the food and money you send them each month. Without you, they would not be able to feed as many people as they do. Your donations of food can be brought to the church anytime during the month and left in the baskets in the vestibule on East Ave. Your checks made out to “St. Martin Catholic Church” and “pantry” on the memo line can be dropped in the collection basket anytime during the month. With that money the men buy products that we do not donate. They give their clients a large Aldi’s bag full of groceries and sometimes they have to buy food to make up a wide selection of food for those bags. The clients love our fresh vegetables that are donated in the growing season from the Parish’ raised beds behind the parish center and from individual donations that add to that offering. Everything Ascension does to help the men feed the hungry from their area of Austin is always appreciated. THANK YOU ASCENSION.
