VOLUME XXXVII ISSUE 1 SEPTEMBER 2013
Mission Statement
The purpose of The Stuart Society is to promote the welfare of the Museum; to stimulate public interest and participation in Museum
activities; to increase the Museum’s general membership; and to maintain a close acquaintance with the activities of the Museum.
A Message from the President...
I love the sound of those words, and there is much that is brand new and exciting at the Museum of Fine Arts as we begin our 50th
Stuart Society year! Here is a sampling of the jaw-dropping, brand new changes you will behold at the Museum when you arrive
for the September General Meeting:
The Great Hall – new stone floor, illuminated ceiling, giving the illusion of a skylight;
Mackey and Acheson Galleries – old carpet removed, new wood floors, faded wall coverings replaced by freshly painted walls,
partitions removed to give an open vista from gallery to gallery;
Marly Room – 19th C wallpaper replaced by painted walls, new wainscoting, a forgotten window at the back of the stage uncovered
to allow natural light to fill the room;
Museum façade – windows facing Beach Drive obscured for decades, re-fitted with new, hurricane-proof glass to provide views
from the street into the Museum…and more!
Program chair Carol Russell has engaged Dr. Lydecker and MFA staffers to give us the full story of the brand new MFA renovations
at the September 26th meeting! You do not want to miss it!
One of the great joys of being Stuart Society president is the opportunity to work with the dedicated and creative volunteers that
comprise the Society. The chairs of our fundraisers will inspire us at the meeting as they relate the plans they crafted during the
summer for our brand new 2013-2014 season! For example:
•
•
•
•
Carol Fisher and Elise Minkoff will unveil the new name, new logo, and new concept for the November 8th SMartLY
Dressed Fashion Show. Tickets, available at the meeting, are selling briskly! Don’t be left out!
Kathy Whittemore and Jane Schaumberg, Co-Chairs for Affaires d’Art, have collected new, never-before-offered parties
and some old favorites to make it difficult to choose! Reservations for the smorgasbord of events may be made at the
meeting, so bring your checkbook. Guests are encouraged to make reservations early!
Dimity Carlson will reveal exciting plans for the expanded Wine Weekend St. Pete, featuring culinary delights for the most
discriminating “foodies,” wines to please all levels of oenophiles and offering travel opportunities to make that dream trip
become a reality! The dates are February 7-9, 2014.
Elizabeth Walters-Alison and Dale Wybrow, Co-Chairs of Art In Bloom, will announce the distinguished honored guest
for the Luncheon, the celebrity Master of Ceremonies for Flowers After Hours and other fun events planned for this popular
fundraiser, March 8-10, 2014!
As a Stuart Society member, what will you do in 2013-2014 to take a brand new step forward to support our treasured Museum?
Will you…
•
•
•
•
go to a new level of MFA membership? (A gift is waiting for you in the MFA Store if you do.)
call a Society member that has not been active recently and ask her to meet you there Sept. 26th?
invite a non MFA member as your guest to a Society meeting and explain the benefits of being a member of our exceptional
Museum? (Challenge 400)
volunteer to work on one of the fundraisers and be a part of the action?
Everything we do as volunteers for The Stuart Society is to promote the welfare of the Museum and increase its membership. It
entails plenty of hard work to present five major fundraisers each year, but I can assure you that the results of the work and the
relationships you form will yield great joy and unmeasured satisfaction! I look forward to seeing you on September 26th!
Warm wishes,
Margaret

The Margaret Acheson Stuart Society Presents
2014 WINE WEEKEND ST. PETE
benefitting The Museum of Fine Arts St. Petersburg
Save the Dates!
February 1 and 7-9
Enjoy Great Foods, Great Wines and Great Times to benefit a Great Cause
Plans are now underway for The Stuart Society's fourth annual wine happening, the 2014 Wine Weekend St. Pete. Once
again, guests will enjoy an over-the-top weekend of events featuring fine cuisine, great wines and an exciting live auction. Just
to keep things fresh, a few new twists are being added in 2014 -- a silent auction, the first-ever duPont Registry Concours
d'Elegance at The MFA, and Grape Escape, which, because one weekend wasn't long enough for all the fun being concocted,
will take place the previous weekend.
