It always started with a soft tap from his cat, Maggie. Maggie gently tapped Paul with her paw until he woke up. She tapped softly, never using her claws. It was her way of saying, “Good morning.” 2 G2_book_22.indd 2 1/31/07 5:11:27 PM Paul would always yawn and stretch. Then he and Maggie would go outside to play. 3 G2_book_22.indd 3 1/31/07 5:11:32 PM As the morning sunlight sprawled over the lawn, Paul and Maggie would play. Paul had taught Maggie how to catch her cat toy. Maggie caught it with her paws. It was a fun way to begin each day. 4 G2_book_22.indd 4 1/31/07 5:11:37 PM Then one morning, Paul did not feel a gentle tap, tap, tap. Maggie was not there! When Paul woke, he ran into the kitchen. Maggie’s saucer of food was not eaten. Then he saw an open window. Maggie must have crawled out of it. 5 G2_book_22.indd 5 2/12/08 3:30:56 PM Paul went back upstairs. On his desk was a drawing of Maggie. Paul felt awful when he looked at it. 6 G2_book_22.indd 6 1/31/07 5:11:45 PM Paul knew that Maggie did not have a collar. If people found her, they would not know where Maggie lived. “This is my fault,” Paul said sadly. “Maggie should have had a collar with her name on it.” 7 G2_book_22.indd 7 1/31/07 5:57:18 PM Just then, Paul heard a knock. It was Mr. Dawson. He lived next door. Mr. Dawson had Maggie in his arms. “I found Maggie in my house,” Mr. Dawson said. “She must have crawled in my window.” Paul was glad. Later, he went out and got Maggie a collar. Then he wrote her name on it just to be safe. 8 G2_book_22.indd 8 2/7/07 1:36:15 PM by Susan Bauer illustrated by Anne-Sophie Lanquetin 9 G2_book_22.indd 9 1/31/07 5:12:00 PM Have you ever found paw prints in the sand or snow? If you ever saw paw prints before, you might know that these paw prints are clues. Looking at paw prints can tell you which animals left them behind. 10 G2_book_22.indd 10 1/31/07 5:12:03 PM Here are some tips to help you fi nd paw prints. A good time to look for paw prints is at dawn. You will fi nd fresh tracks from animals that were out at night. You can look for paw prints right in your own backyard. It is easy to fi nd tracks if your lawn is covered with snow. 11 G2_book_22.indd 11 1/31/07 5:12:09 PM If you fi nd a paw print, count the number of toes it has. The paws of a fox, cat, or dog have four toes on the front feet. Their paws have four toes on the back feet, too. 12 G2_book_22.indd 12 1/31/07 5:12:12 PM Chipmunks, skunks, and bears have four toes on their front paws, just like dogs and cats. They have five toes on their back paws. 13 G2_book_22.indd 13 1/31/07 5:12:16 PM Sometimes paw prints have little marks in front of them. These are claw marks. Skunks, foxes, and dogs have claws on their feet that you can see in their paw prints. 14 G2_book_22.indd 14 1/31/07 5:12:19 PM Rabbits make funny kinds of paw prints. Rabbits hop fast, wishing not to get caught by bigger animals. As rabbits hop, their bigger back paws land in front of their front paws. 15 G2_book_22.indd 15 1/31/07 5:12:24 PM Now that this book has taught you about paw prints, look for some near your home. See if you can guess the kinds of animals that left these paw prints behind. With what you know, it should be easy. 16 G2_book_22.indd 16 1/31/07 5:12:25 PM Paul and Maggie Word Count: 262 High-Frequency Words always door from have into lived Mr. my of one people said there they to was where G2_book_22.indd 17 Decodable Words* a an and arms as at awful back be begin cat catch caught claws collar crawled dawn Dawson day desk did drawing each eaten fault feel felt food found fun gentle gently glad go good got had he heard her his house how I if in is it just kitchen 2/12/08 3:30:59 PM (continued) Decodable Words* knew knock know later lawn looked Maggie Maggie’s morning must name never next not on open out outside over Paul Paul’s paw paws play ran sadly safe saucer saw saying she should soft softly sprawled started stretch sunlight tap tapped taught that the then this toy until up upstairs using way went when window with woke would wrote yawn *Boldface words indicate sound-spelling introduced in this story.
