1. Visit the Mike Adams Recreation Complex
This building is the heart of recreation here in Labrador West. In this building you will find a 25
yard heated swimming pool, a 10 pin, 6 lane bowling alley (glow in the dark), weight room,

2. Go Birdwatching
Labrador is home to many species of birds, what better way to better acquaint yourself with
nature than by observing the wildlife? Birds like the ptarmigan, the gold-crowned kinglet, the
bohemian waxwing, as well as many others, can be found here. For more, visit our website.

3. Go Geocaching
Geocaching is an outdoor recreational activity, in which participants use a Global Positioning
System (GPS) receiver or mobile device and other navigational techniques to hide and seek
containers, called "geocaches" or "caches", anywhere in the world. Labrador West is home to
over 100 Geocaches, located in various locations. With the help of a GPS you will be able to
explore the great Labrador Wilderness while Geocaching. Who knows where your Geocaching
adventure will bring you!

Nightlife
4. See a show or exhibit at the Labrador West Arts and Culture Centre
The Arts and Culture Centres offer a wide variety of programming from the best that
Newfoundland has to offer to diverse artists from across Canada and abroad. The Labrador West
Arts and culture Centres first performance was held on February 14, 1986. The centre features a
seating capacity of 344 people, a Theatre Bar, coat check, parking and is fully wheelchair
accessible.

5. Check out the Nightlife
Adults of legal age can visit one of the many pubs, clubs, and bars to unwind, meet locals, dance,
check out local bands, artists and events, enjoy a game of pool or a night out on the town.

Visit the Labrador City Town Hall
The seat of the municipal government is located in this building. At the town hall you will find a
display of art work including some group of seven paintings. The local fire department is also
located in this building

7. Visit Fermont and discover its unique infrastructure
Labrador West shares a boarder with Quebec. Located about 25 kilometers from Labrador City
on Route 389 is a town called Fermont. Fermont is also a mining town, much like Labrador City
and Wabush. Their mine is Mount Wright, which is also an iron ore mine. But there is one major
aspect that makes Fermont unique. When you first enter Fermont you will notice a 1.3 km and
50 m high windbreak “the wall” on the north side of town. Inspired by a Sweden Copper mining
town. It is a self-contained structure containing apartments, stores, schools, bars, a hotel,
restaurant, a supermarket, skating rink, gym, police department and pool. This shelters a
community of smaller apartment buildings and homes on its leeward side.

8. View the Northern Lights
The biggest light show on Earth, the Northern Lights, plays to audiences on over 240 nights a
year. Also known as the Aurora Borealis, these bright dancing lights are caused by collisions
between electrically charged particles from the sun that enter the earth's atmosphere.
Depending on aurora activity and cloud conditions, you could spend hours watching as this
magical show unfolds overhead. Whether you're fascinated by the science or thrilled by the
opportunity to photograph the aurora, the sight of these dancing lights in the night sky nourishes
all souls. The aurora borealis most often occurs from September to October and from March to

9. Visit the Basilica and Churches in Labrador West
The Basilica, Our Lady of Perpetual Help is one of the most beautiful pieces of architecture in
Labrador City. It was constructed in 1962, and is made of local stone. It is the only cathedral in
Labrador to have received the honour of holding the Basilica title. It’s a building rich in local
history and is a must see for those interested in our past. Labrador West is also home to a
number of other denominations for church-goers to worship.

10. Visit Churchill Falls
Visit the Churchill Falls area, hike the trail located just outside the town to view the falls in all
their beauty or take a guided tour to better understand how the whole operation works. While
visiting the town, stop by the Donald Gordon Center, a unique town centre that features a
school, hotel, restaurant, theatre, library, bank, grocery store and post office.

11. Attend Labrador City Winter Carnival
A weeklong festival of activities for both young and old. Some of the major attractions are the
ice sculptures, snowmobile parade and bonfire, fireworks display and sports tournaments. The
event incorporates other popular winter activities including dog-sledding, winter tubing and

12. Cain’s Quest
Cain's Quest is the longest adventure of its kind in the world! The 3,300 kilometre route through
Labrador’s rugged wilderness is truly a “quest” for all. The route takes participants through
Labrador’s backcountry, over extremely rough terrain all the while enduring sub-zero
temperatures testing both participant and machine against some of the toughest elements. Not
only do the participants have bragging rights, but receive a large prize! The race begins in
Labrador City, and routes change each year Cain’s Quest is held.

13. Polar Bear Dip
Visitors to this chilly event can participate either by daring to take a dip in our frigid northern
lake waters or by simply observing. Usually the lakes are still ice covered but the beach area is
cleared for the event.

14. Winter Lights Celebrations
This winter event is a part of a national program that encourages municipalities to promote a
sense of community pride through this decorative, cultural, and spiritual program. Labrador City
becomes a winter wonderland with bright festive lights and activities during this event. The
town organizes an illuminated Santa Claus parade, an ecumenical celebration of light and a tree
lighting ceremony in Centennial Park, complete with hot chocolate and fires burning bright to
warm participants. Residents participate in a "light up" competition where monetary winnings
are donated to local charitable organizations

15. Ski the Great Labrador Loppet
As one of the most prestigious and popular community events in Labrador West, the PAL Great
Labrador Loppet kicks off each March. Skiers and snowshoers, young and old, can participate in
one of three events - 10, 28 and 50 km, whatever your pleasure. The Loppet kicks off in Fermont,
Quebec and finishes in Labrador City, Newfoundland and Labrador. The trail is groomed for both
classic and free techniques with refreshment stations positioned along the way. finish it with
your best effort or take time to enjoy the day with friends, make all the pit stops and admire the
beautiful Labrador landscape.

16. Enjoy Cross Country skiing at Menihek Nordic Ski Club
With Labrador West having the longest ski season in Canada from late October to the end of
April, it is not a surprise that we are home to a Beautiful cross country ski club. With over 30 km
of groomed Ski trails and 5km of lighted ski trails for nighttime skiing. This Ski Club is completed
with a canteen, full-time staff, meeting room, waxing facilities, showers, indoor barbecue pit,
licenced bar, ski lockers and a complement of rental skies.

17. Enjoy Down Hill skiing and snowboarding at Smokey Mountain Ski Club
Located just 5 minutes from town, with over 30 hectors of Ski-able Terrain, Smokey is a skiers
dream come true. With groomed trails, open faces and steep walls, skiers and snowboarders
are able to come out and enjoy Labrador’s fresh powder. This ski club is completed with a pro
shop, ski and snowboard rentals, waxing facilities, indoor barbecue, and licenced bar.

18. Go Snow Shoeing or winter hiking
For those people who like to snowshoe/hike in a more challenging setting, both Labrador City
and Wabush offer extended walking trails that can be accessed throughout the winter months.
• Jean Lake Walking Trail, Wabush - A 5km trail around beautiful Jean Lake incorporates
two bridges, rest areas and board walks. This trail is partially groomed during winter
months making it ideal for snowshoeing and hiking
• Tanya Lake Walking Trail, Labrador City - a 3km trail around picturesque Tanya Lake is
popular with local residents and visitors. This trail is also partially groomed in winter
and has interpretive signage, boardwalks and rest areas making it ideal for both
snowshoeing and hiking.
• Menihek Interpretive Trail, Labrador City - The Menihek Interpretive Trail incorporates
the first 5kms of the Menihek Nordic Trails designed by the world renowned American
ski racer Bill Koch. There are 28 interpretive signs along the trail focusing on the flora
and fauna, insects, birds and animals. To really enjoy the ecology of Labrador West,
come try the Menihek Interpretive Hiking Trails. This along with the other 35km of
groomed Ski Trails can be used for hiking and snowshoeing with the purchase of a trail
pass at the Menihek Nordic Ski Club.
19. Go snowmobiling
The White Wolf Snowmobile Club in Labrador West was formed in 1997 to enhance recreational
snowmobiling and to help develop the snowmobiling industry as a whole throughout Labrador.
Hence, snowmobiling enthusiasts who travel the White Wolf and other adjoining trails to
experience Labrador's extraordinary wilderness, will be able to enjoy in excess of 800 km of
groomed trails including the Lagoped snowmobile trails in Fermont, in addition to the several
thousand kilometers of the best off-trail riding. These trails are of the highest quality and have
received exceptional reviews from local and out of province snowmobilers as well as a number
of snowmobile groups and publications.

20. The Labrador City Arena
The Labrador City Arena is a gathering point for recreation in Labrador City. It is the home of the
Recreation Department and hosts several community wide events throughout the year including
First Night Celebrations, Halloween Activities, Arena Dances and more. This facility is a one rink
building with the ability to host large tournaments, games and activities with a capacity of 1800
people. This building has 5 dressing rooms, a meeting room and is also home of the Polaris Figure
Skating Club and Labrador West Minor Hockey Association.

21. The Wabush Arena
The Wabush Arena is home to many activities throughout the year. This facility is host to the
Wabush Figure Skating Club, Labrador West Minor Hockey, Recreation and Olympic
Hockey. Rental Times are available through the facilities manager.

22. Carol Curling Club
The Carol Lake Curling Club is the only place to curl in the immediate area, Olympic champions
Mark Nichols and Mike Adams have curled here. This is only available during the winter, however
during the summer the space is available for rent for events.

23. Go Ice fishing
Ice fishing is a great winter activity that’s fun for the whole family! What could be more thrilling
than the unique experience of fishing on the ice? For more information on ice fishing, feel free to

Nightlife
24. Friday night ski and steak night
Spend a chilly Friday night Labrador style. Smokey Mountain offers night skiing/snowboarding
every Friday night of the season, with lighted ski trails. They also open up the indoor fire pit for
the public to use. With the bar open and karaoke, this is the place to be on cold winter nights.

Annual Events
25. Attend the Jean Lake Regatta
The Jean Lake Regatta is an annual event that is held on the last Friday in July. It is the second
largest rowing regatta in Newfoundland and Labrador. Here you can watch the races, enjoy an
assortment of concessions and live entertainment.

26. Participate in The Iron City Duathlon
The Iron City Duathlon began in 2005 and continues to be a great success every year. Taking
place in June, the event draws nearly 150 young and old participants to challenge the bike and
run route as an individual or team.

27. Canada Day Celebrations
Celebrate Canada Day with us! On this special day a variety of games, activities and events for all
ages can be found in the Centennial Park (or at the arena in case of rain) in Labrador City, and
fireworks take place later that night to celebrate our nation’s birthday!

28. Tanya Walking Trail
Labrador City, 3km – Beginner
This gentle trail is located in Labrador City around Tanya Lake. It has picturesque lookouts, rest
areas and informative signs along the trail showing the variety of birds and vegetation.

29. Menihek Interpretive Trail
Labrador City, 5km – Advanced
The Menihek Interpretive Trail incorporates the first five km of the Menihek Nordic Trails
designed by the world-renowned, American ski racer Bill Koch. The trail encompasses four
environmental biomes including deciduous trees, old growth forest, waterfall, and marsh area.
Located at the 1.5 km point are a picnic area and waterfall with boardwalks and observation
areas on both sides of the falls. This is where the 15 signs that focus on the flora and fauna,
insects, birds and animals. To really enjoy the ecology of Labrador West, experience the

30. Crystal Fall Trail
Labrador City, 1.5 km – Advanced
This trail is located on the Nichols-Adam Highway just before the Tamarack Golf course, 4 km
from Labrador City. A sign indicates the beginning of the trail. Approximately 30 minutes long
this trail offers beautiful panoramic views of Labrador City, Wabush and a waterfall once you
reach the top.

31. Jean Lake walking trail
Wabush, 5km - Intermediate
Located around Jean Lake in Wabush, this trail incorporates two bridges, rest areas and board
walks. This trail offers the beautiful view of an evening sunset on the lake. It is a great place to
take your family to observe nature at its finest

32. Jean-Fortin Park and Taiga Trail
Fermont, 4km – Beginner
Jean-Fortin Park offers a huge Caterpillar 789, production truck which holds the record for the
number of hours of operation. Discover rocks of the region and take a picnic with the family. To
start your walk, take the Boulevard Jean-Claude Menard- kilometer 564 of highway 389.You
cannot miss this mastodon at the entrance to Fermont. Continue along the Taiga Trail. Take the
gravel path behind the arbor of Jean Fortin Park and walk along Du Parc Street. Cross and go
through the park and turn left onto the Daviault Bridge. Turn right after the bridge.

33. Small Waterfalls Trail
Fermont, 0.5 km – Intermediate
To get to the small waterfalls trail, take Duchesneau Street. Turn Left and go to the sand-pit.
Take a right after the pit and walk uphill. A parking space is located on the right, after the hill.
Lasting 15 minutes, the trail is punctuated by stops where you will see the falls from different
Angles. The rough terrain offers a breathtaking panorama of the city and Lake Carheil a tributary
of the Moisie River.

34. Mont Daviault Trails
Fermont, 3.2 km – Intermediate
To get there take a left onto the gravel road to the end of the Duchesneau Street. Access to the
tail is via a wooden bridge on your left along with the parking. Accessible to all, these trails offer
interpretive signs of wildlife, flora and geology of our region. In addition, there are several stops
and a gazebo to relax and admire the surroundings along the 3.2 km hike.

35. Severson Mountains
Fermont South, 30km – Advanced
From Fermont, take Route 389South to Kilometer 561. The entrance is on your left. With an
altitude of 832 meters, the Severson Mountains offer 7 trails. The duration of the hike varies
from one to five hours. This is a unique opportunity to see Fermont and explore mixed
vegetation of alpine tundra and taiga.

36. The Groulx Mountains
Fermont South, Expert
Located 200 kilometres south of Fermont, the Groulx Mountains cover an area of approximately
5000 square kilometres. The Trans-Labrador-Quebec highway 389 provides access points to
Groulx at mile 365, Mount Jauffret and at mile 335, Mount Provencher. The Groulx Mountains
are recognized by UNESCO as the World Biosphere Reserve Manicouagan-Uapishka. The Groulx
Mountains peaks are among the highest in Quebec, with 30 peaks over 1000 meters. Be
prepared before leaving and bring maps, first aid and food. Prepare to be self-sufficient when
hiking in the Groulx Mountains as there is no communication service and the area is not

37. Enjoy a round of Golf at Tamarack Golf Club
Labrador West is home to the only 18-hole golf course in Labrador. Complete with a beautiful
Club House and 6,110 yard course. This golf course allows one to enjoy the game of golf while
taking in the beauty of Labrador West’s Wilderness. The golf course also host a variety of events
throughout the season, including a Men’s/Ladies Night and multiple fundraisers.

38. Go camping at Grande Hermine Park
Grande Hermine Park is located 45 kilometers outside of Labrador West on Route 500 (Towards
Goose Bay). Located right on the lake Grande Hermine, it is the perfect place for all ages to go
and enjoy Labrador’s great outdoors. There is also hiking/walking trails, many off road vehicle
trails and a boat launch. Campsites come with tables and grills provided as well as running
water. There is community shower area and toilets. There is also a place to dump sewage.
The park is open from June 1st – September 1st.

39. Go Camping at Duley Lake Family Park
Duley Lake Family Park is located 5 kilometers outside of Labrador West on Route 389 (Towards
Fermont). Located right on Duley Lake and Walsh River, it is the perfect place for all ages to go
and enjoy Labrador’s great outdoors. . There is community shower area and toilets. There is also
a place to dump sewage. The park is open from May 20th- September 4th.

40. Go ATVing
Labrador West is the ideal place for people to enjoy ATVing. The vast wilderness and
snowmobile trails, make for the perfect riding for ATV enthusiasts during the summer months.
With a mixture of trails as well as off-trail riding, the routes are endless. Who knows what sights
you will see and wildlife you will find while adventuring through the Labrador Wilderness.

41. Visit Tanya Beach
Go swimming at Tanya Beach! Enjoy the sun, take a hike around the lake or play on the beach.
It’s the perfect way to cool off on a hot summer’s day!

42. Daviault Lake Beach
Beach offering various water and beach activities plus boat rentals. Enjoy canoeing, kayaking,
pedal boating, kayak yoga and paddle boarding. Learn to steer a small sailboat. Relax on the
beach and swim in a safe environment under the supervision of qualified lifeguards.

43. Visit the Centennial Park
The largest playground in the area, includes new, safe playground equipment in a fenced area.
Situated in the central area of town, this playground provides youth of all ages, a safe fenced
area to explore and play in a comfortable environment. This facility hosts a variety of seasonal
events throughout the year. It features a Splash Park, great for those hot days.

44. Visit the Wabush Playground
This playground is smaller than the one in Labrador City, but is still a great opportunity for kids to
enjoy themselves playing on the various assortment of equipment, in a safe, fenced
environment. Located next to the softball field and J.R. Smallwood middle school.

45. Visit Splash Park
The Splash Park is a small section in our larger playground, Centennial Park. Found on Sutton
Way, this Splash Park, is the perfect opportunity for kids to cool themselves off on a hot day.

46. Ride at the Trick Lane Skateboard Park
Opening in September of 2014 and costing $500 000, this park is sure to impress any riders from
bicyclers, skateboarders and scooter riders. The largest steel ramp park of its kind in Atlantic
Canada, it boasts a large bowl, a halfpipe, quarter pipe, rails, ramps, fun boxes, and a set of
stairs.

47. Go hunting/fishing

48. Go shooting at the Gun Range
Visit the Labrador Trap & Skeet Club for an afternoon of target practice in a safe environment.
They are federally licenced to allow the use of restricted firearms and they offer facilities such as:
Long range, target and tactical rifle shooting, a sporting clays field, as well as a full sized skeet
field and trap field.

49. Go berry picking
Berry picking is a favourite pastime of many locals here in Labrador. A berry that is most
abundant is blueberries and can be found all around the local area. Two favourite spots to pick
them are around Jean Lake in Wabush and Tanya in Labrador City. Other berries that can be
found here include partridgeberries and cloudberries, also known as bake apples. Your Labrador
summer experience is not complete until you've picked fresh wild berries!

50. Go Shopping
Labrador West has the best retail shopping in all of Labrador with many national chains servicing
Labrador City, Wabush, Churchill Falls and residents of other Labrador communities via the Trans
Labrador Highway. Labrador City is home to three shopping centres: the Labrador Mall, Gallery
201, and Carol Lake Shopping Centre. Check out the variety of stores and restaurants available to
shoppers in Labrador West!
51. Visit the Silica Deposits
Behind the Smokey Mountain Area, there is a significant silica deposit. This can be found on the
right hand side of Route 389 to Quebec. The Silica in this area is 99.9% pure. While it has been
said in the past that it may be mined, no further action towards this has taken place. Silica has
many uses, some being eye glasses, tennis rackets, and lenses for certain equipment. For more

52. Take a guided tour of the Mont-Wright mine in Fermont
Witness the mining operation and learn about how Iron Ore is produced. Located in Fermont,
QC, the Mont-Wright Mining Complex, comprises an open-pit mine, an ore crusher and a
concentrator, huge maintenance workshops, a large parts storage facility and a train loading
system. These facilities are complemented by an extensive fleet of mining equipment. Tours
take place on Wednesdays and Saturdays, and reservations are required.

53. Visit the Gateway Labrador
The Gateway Labrador is a Visitor Information Centre, which provides with information about
the local community & province. The Gateway will also provide travellers with any needed
information. Located in the Gateway is also the Labrador Rose gift shop. The Gateway is also
home to The Edmund Montague Exhibit Hall. In the Exhibit hall you will find an assortment of
artifacts that represent Labrador West’s history, culture and people. There are also items the
show case the fur trade and mining history of the community. While you’re here, stop by our
gift shop, Labrador Rose, for the perfect Labrador souvenir.
