About the Cover: This photo was taken by Rich Tsai and was reprinted with permission. I happened to see Rich’s photo in the Jan/Feb issue of the Porsche 356 Registry magazine. Rich stated that if you only noticed the car that you were spending way too much time in the garage. Rich took the photo at the Niello Porsche concours at Serrano last October. The caption in the Registry stated: The lady was wearing a Ferrari outfit while detailing a Porsche. Rich gave her grief about that and she complained to him about not being able to find any “cute” Porsche outfits to wear. He then sent her to the Porsche Design Store. Thank you Rich for setting her straight and for letting us use your photo. Check out Rich’s website at www. Singlelens.net. If you feel like single digit temperatures and snow in the forecast sounds like the end of winter that is!! Our CIA had its first board meeting at Old Chicago in Coralville on Saturday and we have a great looking schedule coming together for your Porsche Pleasure in the coming year. We will be starting in April with a tech session at Stalltech near Wellmen Iowa, where we will inspect the inner workings of a 915 5-speed transmission and install a new set of syncros. Lee and Neil will also give a tour of their ongoing 356 restorations. It’s always a great time to visit their shop and see the ultimate in 356 restorations. Just remember that there is about a ¼ mile or so of gravel road just before you arrive. Final details and a map to their shop will be forthcoming. Our May event will be a return to the St. Donatus Body & Paint Shop for their open house and tour. This is a really fun event because of all the types of collector cars that show up. You can expect to see full classics, hot rods, muscle cars and, of course, the greatest sports cars in the world. We are also planning two events in June in conjunction with the Schonesland Region with a return to autocrossing at the Marshalltown go-kart track and a Porsche Paddock for the Indycar race at Newton Speedway. All of these plus an ice cream social, Botham Winery Car Show, Sertoma, Fall Leaf Tour and other events will make for a great driving season in 2011. See you on the road. Tom The Stud Two priests died at the same time and met Saint Peter at the Pearly Gates. St. Peter said, “I’d like to get you guys in now, but our computer’s down. You will have to go back to Earth for about a week, but you can’t go back as priests. What’ll it be?” The first priest says, “I’ve always wanted to be an an eagle, soaring above the Rocky Mountains .” “So be it,” says St.. Peter, and off flies the first priest. The second priest mulls this over for a moment and asks, “Will any of this week ‘count’ St. Peter?” “ “No. I told you, the computer’s down, there’s no way we can keep track of what you are doing.” “In that case” says the second priest, “I’ve always wanted to be a stud.” “So be it” says St. Peter, and the second priest disappears. A week goes by, the computer is fixed, and the Lord tells St. Peter to recall the two priests.. “Will you have any trouble locating them?”, He asks. “The first one should be easy,” says St. Peter. “He’s somewhere over the Rockies, flying with the eagles. But the second one could prove to be more difficult.” “Why”, asks the Lord “He’s on a snow tire, somewhere in Iowa “ February 2011 http://cia.pca.org PAGE 3 Want to contact the Central Iowa PCA Region Officers. We usually get a bag full of special Kid’s Porsche stuff and then there are planned kid-specific activities, such as the kid’s autocross, crafts, movies, karaoke, remote control cars, coloring, slot cars and drawings. Most places had swimming pools as well as other fun activities. 2002 Idaho – This is one of my favorite memories. I was 3 and my family wanted me to do the kids autocross. When it was my turn, my cousin Brain Teresi strapped me into my stroller and started pushing me full speed around the course. My hair was flying back and my hands were gripping the side of the stroller. It was awesome! 2005 Hershey- We toured Hershey’s factory and learned how chocolate was made. We also went to a pretzel place and made our own pretzels. 2000 Sacramento- was my first Parade - I was only one and I don’t remember anything about it. 2001 Milwaukee- Our friends, the Asmus family met us there. They have a daughter Natalie that is about my age. The hotel had an awesome water park, which we spent tons of time. The 911 GT3 R Hybrid obtains its additional power from its own vehicle dynamics when braking. Porsche is now transplanting this technology into the mid-engine coupé 918 RSR, the motor sports version of the 918 Spyder concept car. From the tradition established by classic Porsche long-distance race cars such as the 908 longtail coupé (1969) and the 917 short-tail coupé (1971), the Porsche designers created a link to the postmodernism of the “form follows function” philosophy. In the 918 RSR, the lines’ elegant flow is dominated by muscular wheel arches, dynamic air intakes and a pulpit-like cockpit. The V8 engine is a further development of the direct injection engine from the successful RS Spyder race car and now offers an output of precisely 563 hp at 10,300 rpm in the 918 RSR. The electric motors on the two front wheels each contribute 75 kW, i.e. a total of 150 kW, to the peak drive power of exactly 767 hp. This additional power, which is generated during braking, is stored in an optimized flywheel accumulator. In the 918 RSR, the two electric motors offer a torque vectoring function with variable torque distribution to the front axle. This additionally increases agility and improves steering response. Mounted upstream of the rear axle, the mid-engine is integrated with a racing transmission also based on the RS Spyder race car. This further developed sixspeed constant-mesh transmission with longitudinally mounted shafts and straight-toothed spur gears is operated using two shift paddles behind the racing steering wheel. February 2011 The vehicle’s functional equipment underscores its puristic motor racing character. Whether it be the characteristic doors which open obliquely upwards, the air intake in the roof bet ween the wing doors, the quick-action locks on the front and rear CFRP lids, the two roof-mounted aerials for pit radio and telemetry, the RS Spyder-like small, lateral front flics or the air splitters beneath the front lip or no-profile racing slicks on 19” wheels with central locking, the vehicle can be clearly recognized as an experimental racing laboratory. able to call up the energy stored in the charged flywheel accumulator and use it during acceleration or overtaking maneuvers. The Porsches are strong. We will have to see when the others get into their groove where we end up. I feel really good about the 54 car. The line-up of cars for the TRG effort is very good. I can tell you that the 67 car has a very experienced group and are fast. Our car has a lot experience as February 2011 well, just not at Daytona. I think we have the little issues we had on Friday out of our system and we are ready.” “We had some challenges early in the week, but the guys worked through them,” Curtis said. “I am confident in our speed and our overall package. We had a really good night session, we were able to set a fast time in night practice and have been toward the top of the sheet whenever we went out. The track is smooth you can almost hit the cruise control on the banking. It is confidence inspiring going into Turn One.” TRG 4The No. 4 TRG/Children’s Tumor Foundation/Porsche at the hands of Ron Yarab, Richard Zahn, Daniel Graeff, Kenny Wal- lace and Ryan Eversley made great strides all weekend. The “senior class” of the TRG armada ended the weekend seventh in combined time. “TRG has put together an excellent package for us,” Graeff said. “We are fast and I think there is more left in the car still. Ryan Eversley is doing a tremendous job helping all of the drivers. We were fifth fastest during last night’s practice. We are coming along really well. All of the drivers get along great and it really fun racing with Kenny Wallace. We are going to take all of the measurements off of the car and try and bring it back in the exact same configuration for the race.” “Our weekend really went well,” Yarab said. “The car is really fast http://cia.pca.org PAGE 14 Continued on the next page GMG/Porsche with Tim Pappas, Bret Curtis, James Sofronas, Jeroen Bleekemolen and Patrick Pilet also showed great speed. In night practice the field was really amped up and some of the guys were getting a little more aggressive, I guess that is a snap shot of what is to come later in the month. I was really focused on being consistent. I am really happy with the car, the TRG guys have got the thing really fast, especially around the banking.” In the No. 66 TRG/Porsche threetime Rolex 24 Hour at Daytona winning driver and team owner Kevin Buckler turned some laps with the help of his sports car codrivers Dominik Farnbacher, Tim George Jr., and Ben Keating. The team is still finalizing this already strong line-up in what will be the team’s fourth entry. “My weekend has been incredible,” Keating said. “This is my first time with TRG and my first time in a Porsche at Daytona. It has met all of my expectations and has been a great experience. I was able to get my times down during the night session. I am excited about the team that Kevin has put together. I am used to driving a big Viper, but the Porsche feels strangely similar. The Porsche is more nimble, you can carry more speed through the corners. I have a sequential gearbox in my Viper so it is not that much different. The car is easy to drive.” “I was able to get down to some pretty fast times today,” George Jr. said. “I have been out of the Rolex cars for a while. It is fun coming back to a short wheel base car. The track is really smooth, the bump is gone in February 2011 Turn Four and the transition going into the road course is a lot smoother. We were feeling out the new Continental tire on the new pavement. I am looking forward to coming back next week with the ARCA car and feeling the Hoosier tire on the new pavement all the way around the oval. TRG does a really great job here at Daytona. Hopefully we can get the 66 in victory lane this year.” “It was a really good weekend,” Buckler said. “We unloaded the cars and got right down to business dialing them into the new surface. I think we got there faster than everyone else. We really had the basic set-up done during the first session and then we focused on cycling everyone through the cars and getting them comfortable. I am very proud of all of the drivers and crew. Our regulars worked well with our new guys and as 66 TRG RoarTeam owner Kevin a team we were able to get all Buckler made a “cameo” driving four cars in the top seven at the appearance and put in a stellar end of the weekend.
