More MRI Scans in
Mississauga
Increasing Access to Our
Hospitals
Moving to Improve Workplace
Health and Safety
Our Mississauga hospitals are boosting operating hours
for their MRI machines, which will reduce wait times for
diagnostic scans.
Ontario is expanding services at Credit Valley Hospital
and Trillium Health Centre to ensure that residents of
Mississauga can get better access to the quality care
they need, close to home.
Appointed by the Minister of Labour, Tony Dean chaired
the Expert Advisory Panel on Ontario’s Occupational Health
and Safety (OHS) Prevention and Enforcement system. The
panel included three members each from labour, business
and academia with workplace health and safety expertise.
The province is providing a one-time investment of
$78,000 to the Credit Valley Hospital, which will result
in 450 additional scans for local patients.
Trillium Health Centre is benefiting from an $800,000
investment, which will result in 3,120 additional MRI
scans.
The additional scans and reduced wait times will make
it easier for people who need an MRI scan to get tested
and treated more quickly.
This initiative is part of the government’s Open Ontario
Plan to provide more access to health care services
while improving quality and accountability for patients.
The province is helping the hospitals expand services
following their recently-completed redevelopment
projects by providing $25.68M in new operating
funding. Credit Valley will receive $16.91M and Trillium
will receive $8.77M. This investment will improve
care and help the hospitals provide more services by
supporting:
>> The expansion of medical, surgical and
rehabilitation inpatient services, as well as
ambulatory services for surgery, emergency and
pediatric care at Credit Valley;
>>
>>
>>
>>

Community Newsletter
Dear Friends,
I hope you had a great Family Day and are enjoying the warmer weather.
For the second year in a row, our community came together in the spirit of
generosity to help those less fortunate through our ‘Twas the Bite Before
Christmas food and fundraising campaign. The campaign was a great
success, raising over $57,500. Congratulations and thank you to all who
participated!
We also received good news about our local air quality. The Air Quality
in Ontario 2009 report was released, showing that our air continues to
improve. In addition, the Minister of the Environment came to town to
reinforce his support for the key recommendations of the Balsille Report.
Since our last newsletter, we’ve also taken steps to move Lakeview into its
post-coal future by cementing the relationship between the Province, OPG
and the City. All three are now working together on a long-term plan for the
Lakeview lands. The City also released its vision for the property at their
Inspiration Lakeview presentation on February 17th.
Together, we’ve made a lot of progress in our community over the past few
years. We’ve invested in our hospitals, our schools and local jobs. There is
still much more to do and I am excited to tackle the challenges that still lay
ahead.

Good News for Our Air Quality!
Ontario’s 2009 Air Quality Report shows that Ontario’s air
quality is improving. There were only 3 smog advisories in
Ontario over 5 days in 2009. This is the lowest number on
record!
The report also shows that emissions are decreasing and
that the provincial standards for nitrogen dioxide, carbon
monoxide and sulphur dioxide were not exceeded at any
of the ambient air monitoring locations in Ontario during
2009.
PM2.5 emissions alone have decreased by approximately
30 per cent over the last five
years.
Ontario’s actions to
improve air quality
include:
>> Phasing out dirty
coal plants;
>> Introducing 59
new or updated
air standards the biggest move
on air standards in 30
years;
>> Supporting new vehicle emission standards and
enforcing Drive Clean; and
>> Putting tough limits on nitrogen oxide and sulphur
dioxide.
Economy and Infrastructure
Environment Minister in
Mississauga
On January 13th, the Minister of the Environment, Hon.
John Wilkinson, met with Charles and south Mississauga
members of the SWGTA Air Quality Task Force to discuss
the Task Force’s report and how to move forward on its
recommendations.
During the discussion, the Minister reiterated his support
for an Air Management System approach to managing
the cumulative effects of local emissions and noted that
there are many similarities between the federal push
towards a Comprehensive Air Management System and
the recommendations of the SWGTA Air Quality Task Force. He also supported the proposal to create a pilot program
for the Clarkson/Oakville airshed that would see the
municipalities, local industry and residents work together to
improve local air quality and identified the need to create
an effective air zone management system that will work for
all of Ontario.
Charles continues to make improving local air quality a
top priority. For more information on our local air quality
and Charles’ involvement, visit our website at www.

The Next Step for Our Waterfront
‘Twas the Bite Before Christmas
a Huge Success!
On December 1st, Charles announced that the Province
is working with the City of Mississauga and Ontario Power
Generation on a shared vision and action plan for the
redevelopment of the Lakeview lands.
Over the holiday season, Charles, the Port Credit BIA and
community organizers put on the second annual ‘Twas
the Bite Before Christmas holiday fundraising campaign in
support of Mississauga food banks.
All three parties will work together to formalize a
coordinated strategy, consistent with the longer-term
development of the Lakeview community. A working group
will develop a memorandum of understanding with the goal
of developing a common vision for Lakeview.
On February 17th, the community unveiled its model for
the future use of the land. The result of the Lakeview
Visioning exercise, the model proposes making Lakeview
a destination spot, incorporating better access to the
water, walkable neighbourhoods and a vibrant business
environment.
The 65 hectare (160 acre) site is the former home of one
of Ontario’s biggest coal-fired generating stations. The
plant was closed in 2005, and subsequently demolished
in 2006-07 as part of the government’s commitment to
eliminating dirty coal from Ontario’s energy mix by 2014.
Thanks to the hard work and generosity of people in our
community, the campaign was an enormous success!
The campaign included a 650 person community dinner
on December 14th at Oasis Convention Centre, emceed by
Mississauga’s own Mike Bullard, as well as Charles’ turkey
drive, a non-perishable food drive and several community
fundraising events.
Ward 1 Councillor Jim Tovey, Joe Berridge from Urban Strategies,
Charles and Mayor McCallion discuss the community’s ideas for
the development of Lakeview during the Lakeview Visioning
meeting.
As of January 1st, the government of Ontario is
providing a 10% rebate off your electricity bill. There’s
no need to apply, the new Ontario Clean Energy
Benefit will appear automatically on your bill.
In total, over $60,000 was raised, including:
• $25,000+ from the community dinner;
• $23,000+ from the turkey drive;
• $7,000 worth of non-perishable food (2,800 lbs); and
Investing in Our Community
On December 9th, Infrastructure Minister Hon. Bob
Chiarelli was in Mississauga to see first hand the work
underway at the Clarkson Community Centre, thanks to the
Infrastructure Stimulus Fund (ISF). Under the ISF, Ontario
contributed $3.3 million for the addition of a new pool.
Ward 2 Councillor Pat Mullin was also there to share the
good news. The province has previously invested $7 million
through the Recreational Infrastructure Canada program to
rehabilitate seven community swimming pools in our city.
10% off our Hydro Bills
Charles in the Community
• $5,000+ cash from other events.
We are very fortunate to live in a community that never
fails to come together to support those most in need.
The generosity of our neighbours is the reason this year’s
Holiday Turkey Drive exceeded all expectations. Thank you
to everyone who donated time, money and food to help
Mississauga families!

and turned into new products, which also
keeps hazardous materials out of our

them free of charge. To find out more about
