261 Tau Beta Pi Scholars & Bios for 2015-16 Mohamed G. Aboseria, Bloomberg No. 9 Muhammad H. Alvi, Stabile No. 323 Sara R. Arussy, Record No. 1017 Muhammad is a senior in mechanical engineering at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. In two co-op sessions he has designed internal prostheses and surgical instruments. He pursues his research interests at WEMPEC, an electromechanics research consortium. He plans to remain in academics and aspires to be a research professor. Sara is studying chemical engineering at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, with a minor in biology. She has been involved in research projects on modeling prostate cancer in rats and analyzing the morphology of fungal mutants for large scale bioreactors. She is interested in pursuing a Ph.D. together with gaining industry experience. Emmanuel S. Akpan, GEICO No. 50 Alexander Q. Anderson, Record No. 1015 Emmanuel is a chemical engineering major at Florida Tech minoring in computational mathematics. He volunteers with Habitat for Humanity, has received numerous awards in academia, and has held several positions in campus organizations. He plans to further his education and pursue a career in renewable energy. Alex is majoring in optical engineering with a minor in biomedical engineering at the University of Rochester. He is currently researching freeform optical design of telescopes at NASA Goddard. Following graduation, he plans to pursue a Ph.D. in optics. Allan P. Bartlett, Scribner No. 29 Erika A. Allen, Record No. 1014 Shannon E. Anderson, Record No. 1016 Deidre L. Beck, Record No. 1018 Erika is a proud Mountaineer in her senior year of chemical engineering. She has been active at WVU as TBP chapter president and with Engineers Without Borders traveling to Fiji and the Dominican Republic for clean water projects. After graduation, she plans to work in the energy industry and one day explore Guatemala. Shannon is a biomedical engineering student at Boston University where she is MA Eta Chapter president. For two summers, she has worked at a BU lab on creating implantable silk biomaterials. After graduation, she plans to pursue a Ph.D. and continue engineering biomaterials for use in regenerative medicine. Deidre is double majoring in civil & environmental engineering and Spanish at South Dakota State University. She hopes to pursue a career in engineering with an emphasis in sustainability. She is an active member in several organizations on campus, including TBP, ASCE, SWE, and Engineers Without Borders. Mohamed is studying biomedical engineering at the City College of New York. He is a researcher at a neural engineering lab, and is the incoming vice president of the New York Eta Chapter of TBP. After graduation, he plans to pursue a research and development career in the field of prosthetics. Allan majors in electrical engineering at the University of Kentucky. His minors are in Spanish and mathematics, and he will earn the PEIK Power & Energy Certificate. Allan has completed two co-op rotations with Kentucky Utilities, studied renewable energy in Spain, and recently conducted power systems research at the University of Tennessee. Fall 2015 The Bent of tau beta pi 27 Micha Ben-Naim, Bose No. 9 Cameron J. Blocker, Scribner No. 29 Tyler N. Brehm, Record No. 1024 Micha is studying chemical engineering at MIT. He is an active leader in the AEP fraternity and MIT Hillel. He performs research on carbon nanotube separations for photovoltaic and biological sensing applications. He has interned at Chevron Oronite working on lubricant oil chemical additive development and will pursue a Ph.D. Cameron is studying electrical engineering at Brigham Young University. He works in circuit design and low level programming at the Electro-Holography Lab, where he is building his own holographic video monitor. He interned at Intel this summer, will serve on campus as IEEE chair and Eta Kappa Nu secretary, and plans to pursue a Ph.D. Tyler is a biomedical engineering major at the University of Cincinnati with a minor in business administration. He is OH B Chapter vice president and a student tutor and teacher’s assistant with BMES. Tyler has completed four co-op rotations at Ethicon Endo-Surgery, plans to obtain an MBA or master’s, and a career in the medical device industry. Molly Berringer, Record No. 1019 Madalyn L. Bockheim, Record No. 1022 Shelby L. Brevogel, Harker No. 1 Molly is a biomedical engineering senior at the University of Iowa. She is involved in academic organizations and participates in intramural sports. She interned with Medtronic developing and testing prototypes of a medical device to extract pulmonary embolisms. She will pursue a master’s and a career in the medical device industry. Madalyn is a biomechanical engineering major at Marquette University. She ranks first in her class with a 4.0 GPA. She volunteers with Big Brothers Big Sisters of greater Milwaukee and is involved with several campus organizations. Upon graduation, she plans to pursue a graduate degree or a career in the medical device industry. Shelby is studying civil engineering at Rowan University and is vice president of the local chapter of ASCE and recording secretary of NJ E Chapter. She is also an active member of SWE and an intern with Delmarva Power. Future plans include working a few years in the utility industry and obtaining an MBA. Alyssa J. Bezreh, Record No. 1020 Eric Bookless, Stabile No. 324 Elizabeth Brooks, Rothrock No. 1 Alyssa is an electrical & computer engineering student at Northeastern University. She enjoys competing in triathlons and serves as Massachusetts Epsilon Chapter president. Alyssa has had co-ops at Bose Corp., Ambri Inc., and MC10 Inc. After graduation, she plans to pursue a career in the clean energy field. Born in Canada, Eric moved to Alaska to study mechanical engineering at the University of Alaska Fairbanks. He recently interned at a construction design firm, but plans to pursue his interest in biomedical engineering. After graduation, he plans to volunteer with the Peace Corps to travel the world and utilize his skills. Elizabeth is studying mechanical engineering at Texas A&M University and will earn certificates in project management and international eng’g. She is philanthropy chair of Kappa Alpha Theta sorority, has interned at Lauren Engineers & Constructors and The Weitz Co., and will pursue a management career in the oil & gas industry working abroad. Valerie J. Binns, Record No. 1021 Madison A. Boyer, Stabile No. 325 David G. Burchfiel, Record No. 1025 Valerie is majoring in electrical engineering at Kansas State University. She is treasurer for the ECE Women in Engineering group and the Eta Kappa Nu chapter. She has done research in the biomedical computing devices lab and volunteers at a clinic that serves those without health insurance. Valerie plans to attend medical school. Madison is studying mechanical engineering at Brigham Young University with a minor in physics. She has performed research using highspeed photography to study fluid behaviors. Madison is on BYU’s supermileage vehicle team and actively searches for local STEM outreach opportunities. She plans to pursue a master’s degree. David is studying chemical engineering at Clemson University with a minor in business administration and a 4.0 GPA. He has participated in the AIChE Car Competition, interned with an electric delivery company, and participated in the Mickey Leland Environmental Internship Program. Burleson, Record No. 1026 Sean is a chemical engineering major at Auburn University with biomedical specialization. He is researching halloysite nanocomposites for drug delivery. Sean is AL A recording secretary, treasury lead of the AIChE Car Team, and mentors for the Alabama Alliance for Students with Disabilities in STEM. He plans to pursue a Ph.D. William is pursuing a degree in chemical engineering at Brigham Young University focusing on biomedical engineering. His aspirations include becoming a business leader and giving back to his community through public office. He wishes to become a teacher and inspire future generations to pursue engineering careers. Benjamin is studying chemical engineering at the University of South Alabama, where he is a Whiddon Honors scholar. He is researching ionic liquids in preparation for his undergraduate thesis defense. Following graduation, he hopes to work in industry, perhaps at BASF, where he has previously held an internship. Matthew J. Blake, Forge No. 32 Connor L. Brashar, GEICO No. 51 Travis R. Carter, Stabile No. 326 Matt is a geological engineering major at the University of Alaska Fairbanks. He spent ten years working in the mining industry before deciding to pursue a bachelor’s in engineering. This summer, he is helping to set up a small scale placer gold mining operation in Nome, Alaska. Connor is studying electrical engineering at the New Mexico Institute of Mining & Technology. He serves as NM G recording secretary and as IEEE chair. He is an avid writer and performed GPS interference research at the Joint Navigation Warfare Center as an intern. Connor plans to pursue a graduate degree. Travis is double majoring in civil engineering and math at UNCC. He wants to apply his problem solving skills to large construction projects as a superintendent. She has completed co-ops at VA Health Administration, Walt Disney, and Apple. Hannah serves as MA H Chapter event coordinator, has studied abroad in Kenya, and plans to pursue a career in the health industry or non-profit sector. Phillip is studying mechanical engineering at Tennessee Technological University. He is TN G Chapter vice president, an officer in Pi Tau Sigma, and has participated in Tech’s Baja team. He has interned three summers at ORNL doing research in big area additive manufacturing and plans to start an engineering business after working in industry. Griffin S. Huili is pursuing a B.S. in computer science and a B.A. in psychology with a minor in peace studies at the University of Notre Dame. She has been involved in research labs for both majors and has worked with two computer science professors on solving problems via network analysis and machine learning methods. Emily is studying at the University of MissouriKansas City on a 5-year B.S./M.S. program in mechanical engineering. She has been elected MO D Chapter president and is also vice president of the Pi Tau Sigma chapter. She has been an intern at RBC Medical Innovations and hopes to pursue a career in the biomechanical field upon graduation. She will serve as SASE chapter president and as a Clarkson intercultural ambassador. She recently interned at Procter & Gamble and plans to pursue either a master’s degree or a job in industry. Chelsea is a civil engineering major at the University of Nevada, Reno. She is the membership coordinator of the local SWE chapter. After graduating, she hopes to get a job at a structural engineering firm. She intends to pursue a post-graduate degree with an emphasis in reinforcement for earthquakes. Shannon is a civil engineering major at the University of Portland with a minor in mathematics. She is conducting structural dynamics research and working to develop a model to predict failure in airplane wings. After graduation, she will pursue graduate degrees and aims to be an engineering professor, researching nonlinear structural mechanics. Stephanie S. Cheng, Stabile No. 328 Colleen M. Cole, Record No. 1031 Greta M. Danielson, Stabile No. 334 Colleen is a biomedical engineering major at Saint Louis University and plays on the school’s Div. 1 women’s soccer team. She was the orthopaedic research intern at Missouri Bone & Joint Research Foundation under Dr. Whiteside. She plans on pursuing a career in the medical device industry. Greta studies mechanical engineering at North Dakota State University. She is an optimizing operations intern at 3M, serves as ND A Chapter vice president, and is active in SWE and the nordic ski club. Her dream job is to be a product engineer at a bicycle company. Stephanie is a mechanical engineering student at the University of Miami (FL). She leads an outreach effort in Panama through Engineers Without Borders, participates in undergraduate research in green engineered new transportation technologies, and works for the Keller Company’s HJ Foundation. Katherine is pursuing a dual-degree in biomedical engineering and mathematics at the University at Buffalo. She will continue as a teaching assistant while becoming an officer in TBP. Katherine spent her summer organizing the school’s first high school engineering camp for females. She plans to obtain an MBA and continue on to industry. Shannon M. He had done research with nanowires for use in photovaltaic cells and fuel cell catalysts at Brookhaven National Lab. He is a teaching assistant, volunteers for an education outreach program, and participates in ballroom dance. Future plans include graduate classes. Jay is a previously home-schooled student pursuing undergraduate and master’s degrees in architectural engineering with a physics minor at Kansas State University. He is an engineering tutor, has interned with Alvine Engineering, and his goal is to graduate debt-free and engage in a fulfilling engineering career. Sarah A. Upon graduation, she will pursue her interest in teaching and attend graduate school in a Ph.D. program. Khanh is an industrial engineering major and a Spanish minor at the University of Texas at Arlington. She has served on campus as SWE secretary, webmaster for IIE, and as a student leader at Baptist Student Ministry. She worked as a Six Sigma intern at Demilec and plans to pursue a career in the manufacturing industry. Zachary is an agricultural & biosystems engineering major at South Dakota State University with an emphasis on the study of power and machines. He has worked as a design engineer for manufacturers such as Buhler and Case New Holland. After graduation, he will pursue a career as a design specialist of agricultural machinery. Nicole Demetrides, Diarra No. 1 Linh D. Do, Forge No. 35 Nicole is a mechanical engineering student at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County. She is an officer of the MD D Chapter of TBP and is actively involved in campus research. This summer, she interned at NASA Goddard and plans to pursue a graduate degree in materials engineering after graduation. Linh is an international student from Vietnam majoring in chemical engineering at San Jose State University. Her dream is to optimize drug manufacturing processes to make medications more economical. She is passionate about promoting STEM to young females, hopes to join Genentech, and then enter grad school. Scott C. Egbert, Stabile No. 338 Juline N. Deppen, Record No. 1034 Jeremy is studying mechanical engineering with a concentration in bioengineering applications and a minor in materials science at Kettering University. He has worked at Biomet in the lower extremities trauma department where he designed surgical instruments for use with intramedullary nails. He plans to pursue an advanced degree. Scott is studying mechanical engineering with an emphasis in aerospace studies at Brigham Young University. He has been involved in developing a synchronous, multi-user computer aided design software platform and completed an internship at Lockheed Martin Aeronautics. He plans to pursue a master’s. Jennifer I. Domanowski, Record No. 1037 Megan D. Ehrhart, Scribner No. 31 Juline majors in biomedical engineering at the University of South Carolina. She has completed research projects focusing on allergy and asthma, tissue engineering, and biofabrication. Juline is SC B Chapter recording secretary, ambassador for the Office of Undergraduate Research, and performed in the Off-Off Broadway Student Org. Jennifer is a materials science and engineering major at Boise State University. Her love for space has led her to internships with NASA at the Marshall Space Flight Center, Glenn Research Center, and Goddard Space Flight Center. She plans to pursue a master’s degree and work at Goddard upon graduation. From Albuquerque, Megan is pursuing her B.S. and M.S. degrees in electrical engineering from Rochester Institute of Technology. El Hefni, Stabile No. 339 Theodor is a bioengineering major with a concentration in orthopedic mechanobiology and bionics at Union College. He is NY M Chapter president, member of BMES, and plays on the D1 ice hockey team. He researches regenerative medicine and will pursue MD and Ph.D. degrees. Fernando is a mechanical/mechatronic engineering major at the University of Colorado Denver. He is an exchange student from the Univ. of Sao Paulo. In Brazil, he did research to develop a CAD tool to assist in the design of tubes and umbilical cords for off-shore extraction. He hopes to return to the U.S. to pursue a master’s. Khalid is majoring in mechanical engineering at the University of Texas at Arlington. He received the outstanding junior mechanical engineering award, is active with Pi Tau Sigma and ASME, and wants to pursue his master’s and Ph.D. in mechanical engineering. Elliott, Record No. 1038 Anthony is studying civil engineering at the University of Rhode Island. On campus, he is vice president of Chi Epsilon. He was a field engineering intern at GZA GeoEnvironmental Inc. He plans to earn a master’s and pursue a career in designing deep foundations or waterfront structures. 30 Fall 2015 The Bent of tau beta pi Mindy is majoring in electrical engineering and minoring in mathematical sciences at Clemson University where she has a 4.0 GPA. She interned at ORNL measuring the power and carbon emissions of applications running on high performance computers. She is active in TBP, Habitat for Humanity, and in Clemson’s marching band. David is a computer engineering student at Florida Institute of Technology with a minor in computer science and first in his class. He interned with Harris Corp. as a software engineer, helped software companies with his professor, and volunteers at local schools. Adam served as IN G Chapter president, engineering honors program president, and as section leader of the saxophones in the Fighting Irish Band. He will pursue a master of education degree. Robert is studying chemical engineering at Brigham Young University. He is involved with research in tissue engineering and catalysis. Robert coordinates engineering activities for the UT B Chapter, is fluent in French through volunteering with his church, and is studying Chinese. She is involved in research programs in the Neurobiology Engineering Lab and plans to pursue a Ph.D. April is studying civil engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology. She is doing research in the field of infrastructure asset management with a focus on pavement rehabilitation and design. Haley is studying environmental engineering at Clarkson University. Emily attends Kansas State University majoring in architectural engineering with a structural emphasis. She is KS G Chapter president, Architectural Engineering Institute chapter president, and serves as an officer of Phi Alpha Epsilon and Steel Ring. She intends to obtain a master’s degree before entering the workplace. Jeffrey is studying chemical engineering at Brigham Young University. He is involved in research on power grid stability. After pursuing a career in international energy, he hopes to teach high school chemistry. Jeffrey is on the BYU triathlon team, plays the guitar, and enjoys experiencing other cultures. Travis A. On campus, he is a member of the Sally McDonnell Barksdale Honors College and serves as a council member for the engineering student body. Travis plans on going to medical school to pursue a career as an orthopaedic surgeon. Tyler is a biomedical engineering major at Duke University with a minor in chemistry. His research interests are in diagnostic imaging and image processing. Tyler also volunteers at Duke Hospital with cancer patients. He plans to apply for medical school and pursue a career in academic medicine. Ascanio is majoring in engineering and economics at Swarthmore College. She has interned for 18 months with Cargill and KimberlyClark and plans to pursue a career as a project engineer. Tim is studying materials science & engineering and finance at the University of Pennsylvania. He is PA D Chapter vice president, an energy private equity firm intern, and an advocate for Generation IV nuclear reactor designs. He plans to pursue a Ph.D. in nuclear eng’g, focused on thorium fuel cycles and molten salt reactor design. Jon is a mechanical engineering student at the University of WisconsinMadison. Wingate, Soderberg No. 24 Kasra Zarei, Record No. 1130 Ever is studying chemical engineering at Florida State University. He is active in the honors program, AIChE, and several other organizations. He has completed research experiences in France, at FSU, and at UCI, ranging from materials to nuclear energy. He will pursue a Ph.D. in ChE with an emphasis on renewable energy. Mallory is studying biomedical engineering at Rochester Institute of Tech. She is a BMES member, works as a teaching assistant, and is in the honors program. She completed co-ops at the Univ. Cardiovascular Eng’g Lab, Integrated Nano-Technologies, and Zimmer. She plans on pursuing a career in medical devices and orthopedics. Kasra is a biomedical engineering major at the University of Iowa focusing on medical image analysis and bioinformatics. He will pursue a Ph.D., conduct research and collaborate in ophthalmology and neurology, and teach at the university level. His research interests include treatment and noninvasive diagnosis of eye diseases and neurological disorders. Philip S. Walker, Record No. 1123 Anna M. Wisniowiecki, Record No. 1126 Anna P. Zetterberg, Soden No. 1 Phil is majoring in chemical engineering with a minor in energy at the Colorado School of Mines. He participates in APO (service fraternity), helps with the campus radio station, in athletic events, and works for Leidos in their energy consulting division. He hopes to obtain an MBA and work in the sustainable energy field. Anna is a biomedical engineering major at Texas A&M University with an instrumentation focus. She conducts research on deafness using optical coherence tomography. She returned as an R&D eng’g intern at Medivators, Inc. Anna plans to pursue a graduate degree and a career in developing novel medical devices. Anna is studying chemical engineering at the University of Tennessee. She is TN A Chapter president and has had internships with ExxonMobil, NASA, Eastman Chemical Co., and Energy Transfer. After graduation, she plans to pursue a position in the chemicals or oil and gas industry. Spencer G. Watza, Record No. 1124 Ian Wong, Record No. 1127 Jiamin Zhang, Stabile No. 417 Spencer is majoring in aerospace engineering at Western Michigan University with a minor in computer science. His interests are in unmanned systems & autonomous vehicles and his thesis centers on developing a proximity operations demonstration system. He is past MI K Chapter president and AIAA vice chair. Spencer is a NASA Ames intern and will pursue a master’s degree. Ian majors in civil & environmental engineering at the George Washington University with a minor in business administration. He is a Clark Scholar and an intern at Clark Construction Group. He is DC G Chapter corresponding secretary and member of Theta Tau eng’g fraternity. He hopes to obtain an MBA and return to Hawaii to improve the local infrastructure. Jiamin is majoring in chemical & biomolecular engineering at Cornell University. She researches hydraulics and thermodynamics of plants in a synthetic system. She co-ops with Paladino & Co. in DC. She is an officer with International Student Admissions Ambassadors and sings in the Chorale. She plans to attend grad school for renewable energy research. Kody K. Weiss, Record No. 1125 Boni F. Yraguen, Stabile No. 416 Yichao Zhang, Record No. 1131 Kody is majoring in civil engineering at South Dakota State University. He holds officer positions in ASCE, WEF/AWWA, and TBP. He does research in the Environmental Eng’g Lab and is researching nutrient removal from agricultural subsurface drainage. He will enter the workforce and continue his education with a master’s degree. Boni is studying mechanical engineering at the University of South Alabama. She is in the honors program and pursuing minors in music and mathematics. She worked at the Tank & Automotive Research Design Eng’g Center for the military conducting research on diesel engine combustion and ignition delay. She will pursue a master’s and work in powertrain design. Yichao is majoring in chemical engineering at Kansas State University. She is involved in research and the Chem-E-Car design team. She serves as KS G Chapter cataloger, AIChE vice president, and a teaching assistant. After graduation, she will pursue a Ph.D. in material science & eng’g focusing on 2D material and nano-material synthesis with the goal of becoming a professor. Maxwell E. Wiechec, Stabile No. 414 Shuwen Yue, Record No. 1128 Ellen Zhuang, Sickafoose No. 3 Max is a mechanical engineering major at the U.S. Naval Academy with concentrations in nuclear energy & materials. He is MD G Chapter treasurer, Brigade Safety officer, and member of Pi Tau Sigma and Sigma Xi. He is snare drummer in the Drum & Bugle Corps., a Bowman Scholar, and will continue his laser-assisted advanced manufacturing research. Shuwen is studying chemical & biological engineering at the University of Alabama with a minor in mathematics. She has researched computational modeling and is president of the American Chemical Society chapter. Upon graduation, Shuwen plans to pursue a Ph.D. and a career in academia. Ellen is double majoring in chemical engineering and integrated science at Northwestern University while pursuing a managerial analytics certificate. She is involved with AIChE, SWE, student hall government Eco-Reps, peer advising, and biomaterial research. She does crafts with children at Lurie Children’s Hospital.
