July 2011 - Musical Theatre New Zealand
Major Sponsors Of MTNZ July 2011 MTNZ acknowledge and thank most sincerely Ella Duddridge who was the MTNZ secretary from 1964 – 1983 and was made a life member in 1986 (known as Vice Patron then). Ella's contribution to the early days of the New Zealand Federation of Operatic Societies was enormous and she was a true pioneer of our organisation. Postings from Nola Speir‟s family from Facebook: Anne Speir - I remember in awe her telling Nola and I about flying on Concorde. She was an amazing woman and such a stalwart of Musical Theatre. R.I P Ella. Hope you‟re having a brandy with Nola and Garth. John Speir - Ella, Moss and Garth were all held the highest regard at Nola's. I'm charging my brandy balloon and raising it also Sadly Garth Clark passed away on 6 June 2011, peacefully at Ranfurly War Veterans Home in his 76th year. Pauline Vella said that Musical Theatre has lost a great talent and a kind soul. However for all future shows in heaven ... the actors‟ faces will be able to be seen. Garth was award a Merit Award in 2007 for his services and contribution to musical theatre around the North Island Gisborne 1960; Tokoroa 1962; Putaruru 1963 and Helensville and Auckland Music Theatre 1965 - now. Garth was a director; lighting designer (double NAPTA winner for lighting); committee member and to quote from his merit award citation - general good guy with over 47 (in 2007) years‟ service to various musical societies. Roger Mexted – such a talented man and a wonderful teacher. Roger was hugely involved with Wellington Operatic/Musical Theatre and other Wellington theatres, in the late 80s and into the 2000s. Tragically Roger was taken way too soon and passed away on Saturday 25 June at Wellington Hospital. Our thoughts are with his family, close friends and the Wellesley College community in Wellington where Roger taught for a number of years. A memorial service for Roger will be held at Wellesley College, Friday 1 July at 1.30pm. 1 The MTNZ 52nd AGM & Volunteer Training Weekend .. 16 – 18 March 2012 - Wanganui Hosted by AMDRAM Musical Theatre Wherever you are in New Zealand - all roads lead to our River City Wanganui - Home of New Zealand’s oldest Musical Society AMDRAM Theatre. “Friday Night at the Races" - starts the conference at The Function Centre, Purnell Street, overlooking the Racecourse. Can you also send me the ticketing details as well for your shows and hopefully soon, you can update your own info!! Subs – Thank you so much for paying your annual sub. Capital Assistance Fund – please don‟t forget to make your society contribution. Congratulations to John Antony – our new QSM (photo of John and current President Ian Reid at Queenstown conference in 2009) John has been involved with musical theatre around New Zealand for nearly fifty years, beginning whilst still at college. During this time his personal experience has included being a performer, set designer, stage manager, production manager, advisor and director. He has put this experience to good use in his community over many years, with his voluntary assistance contributing to numbers of groups, societies and organisations. John has been particularly supportive of youth development, encouraging and fostering participation within school productions he has directed and also assisting young talent to develop within his many productions in the wider community. His involvement with the Auckland based theatrical Summer School for youth theatre (CCMT) continues his commitment to the development of future performers. A North Shore Music Theatre committee member for over 25 years – including three terms as President – John has been a supportive mentor to aspiring cast members, fostering the diverse talents he delighted in taking to the next level. Many former cast members now performing in professional productions around New Zealand and overseas credit this thorough training they received at the beginning of their careers. As President of Musical Theatre New Zealand, John worked to further develop the educational aspects of the organisation, with professional development workshops included in the advisory and networking opportunities supported by MTNZ around the country and research assistance available for all on the MTNZ website (www.musical.org.nz). Since his retirement as President in 2009 he continues to actively support and encourage the broad membership, across the Zones of Musical Theatre New Zealand around the country. John was awarded a MTNZ Merit Award for services to North Shore Music Theatre in 1997 and life membership in 1995, and in 2010, was award the highest honour that a member of MTNZ can achieve – Life Membership which is awarded for outstanding service to the musical theatre community of New Zealand. Congratulations from us all John and a well-deserved recognition for your service to musical theatre and New Zealand communities. 3 ZONE MEETING INFORMATION Combined North Island Meeting Hosted by Napier Operatic and Theatre Hawkes Bay Friday 8 & Saturday 9 July, meeting in Napier and dinner and West Side Story in Hastings Combined South Island Meeting Hosted by The Waimate Theatre Company Saturday 13 August, Waimate One change for both meetings from the previous agendas, is a discussion/forum that we would like the whole meeting involved with, on small venue maintenance. Ngaire Holmes (Zone Two Rep) and I attended the ETNZ conference last weekend in Auckland and we attended this seminar. The panel included Rob Peters from Theatresystems and Design and now Past President of ETNZ; Graeme Philip from John Herber and Phil Conroy from Shand Shelton, who all work and do maintenance and consultancy work in theatres from the Civic in Invercargill to the smaller venues like the Masterton Town Hall – they have seen it all. It was a really good seminar and discussion and the ETNZ panel suggested that we should take that discussion to our membership – so both combined meetings are a great opportunity to do this. Ngaire and I found the seminar very informative with some good ideas to bring to you, so we have arranged for Dale Henderson, President of EVANZ to chair the North Island meeting; and Graeme Philip from John Herber and David Bosworth from the Light Site (all were at this seminar) to chair it at the South Island meeting, so a great opportunity to talk about something extremely important for all our society and education members and there are things you need to be aware of and some ideas that MTNZ have that came out of this seminar. Another highlight for the North Island meeting will be a presentation from Rick Behague, Aon Insurance regarding the challenges facing the insurance industry and local theatre groups due primarily to the increased costs of purchasing insurance as a result of natural disasters. What can you do to minimise costs? South Island meeting – Stuart Hendricks from Hal Leonard, will be attending the meeting in Waimate, which is fantastic – thanks to Stuart for coming all the way from Melbourne and he is hitching a ride with Ian, Ross and I from Christchurch – Sharon has assured us there are electric blankets and heat pumps in Waimate We have pretty much finalised numbers for the North Island meeting (catering etc.) and thank Lionel from Theatre Hawkes Bay and Sonya from Napier Operatic for all their assistance and Lesley Reid, our Vice President for all the organising she has done behind the scenes as well. However, like conference, we never turn anyone away, so if you still are intending to come please email Lesley NOW [email protected] - these meetings are for all everyone and it would be fantastic to see some of the societies who don‟t usually attend annual conference come along – a great opportunity to network and share ideas. Looking forward to seeing many of you soon and please check out all the information at the end of this edition of Spotlight or go to the following links: http://www.mtnz.co.nz/news-and-features/noticeboard/173-combined-south-island-meeting http://www.mtnz.co.nz/news-and-features/noticeboard/172-mtnz-combined-north-islandmeeting-agenda-and-weekend-information 4 Other Zone meeting dates – Zone Two – 3 September in Morrinsville. Napier Operatic Society – celebrating 125 years 19 - 22 October, 2012 The Napier Operatic Society is proud to be celebrating 125 years of musical theatre next year. We are planning a reunion celebration over Labour Weekend next year, 2012, with a full weekend of activities including a cabaret and dinner/theatre show. We would love to receive your expressions of interest and invite you to email the 125th Celebration Committee secretary, Tessa May Brown on [email protected] Rotorua Musical Theatre has the CATS consortium set for sale / hire. Any queries can come to [email protected] Congratulations to Oamaru Operatic who at the recent Trustpower Volunteer Awards, won the regional Arts & Culture section for their production of Les Miserables which a few of the MTNZ Executive saw last year. Congratulations to everyone involved. Creative NZ Directors School Report We finally made it to Dunedin, Queens Birthday weekend and held the inaugural MTNZ/CNZ Directors Training School. The brief for the course was as follows: The course is intended as an introduction to Directing Musicals (hence the name!) and is most suitable for those who have never directed at all. It concentrates on relationships, basic stage craft, administration (rehearsal schedules etc) and how to communicate to other departments of a show. Friday night was a meet and greet at the Musical Theatre Dunedin rooms which was great – pizza all round . Saturday morning was straight into it including topics such as The roles of the management team (Director, Musical Director, Choreographer, Production Manager etc); What does a director actually do; The vision; Responsibilities; The need to educate; Preserving the illusion; Selecting a show; Time table formulas; People; The rehearsal schedule; Preparing and meetings; The crew; Auditions; Rehearsals; Dealing with beginners and prima dona‟s; Common directing errors; What happens after opening; Plus a whole heap of other little bits and pieces and information Saturday night saw a bit of R&R at the Kensington in Dunedin, however, as the course participants had homework and an 8am start in the next morning (for those putting the on coffee it was a 7.30am start – eek), it wasn‟t the usual musical theatre soiree till the wee small hours, but it was good for everyone to relax and network in a more social environment. Sunday started with some bleary eyed people (ah, that would be Ross, Helen and I ) but once the caffeine kicked in about 8.30am we were away. Ross, Helen and I ended up being “directed” – great to participate. David Adkins was fantastic – the feedback has been awesome and David really related so well to the group and given he was right in the middle of the Miss Saigon season, we were so lucky to have him run the school for us and huge thanks to Delwyn Smith our now retired Zone One Rep for suggesting David to tutor school. Participants came from all over NZ – from Whangarei to Invercargill and a few had to contend with fog and closed airports but everyone got there in the end. Our thanks to all those that participated in the weekend and came along to learn – you were a great bunch of people I cannot thank enough the Musical Theatre Dunedin team, especially Marie Maker, for all they did for us over the weekend, keeping us fed and watered and hosting the school, when sadly, we had to move it from Christchurch. I would like to thank Showbiz Christchurch and in particular Marcelle for the initial work done on setting up the venue etc. 5 Special thanks to Matt Bentley for all his assistance with the application to CNZ – couldn‟t have done it with him that‟s for sure. I thought I would share some of the feedback with you – always room for improvement but it has been awesome: I felt it covered all aspects of Directing that a new Director needs to understand to be successful. I‟ve worked as a trainer in business and attended many short courses. This was one of the best I‟ve participated in. The course was fantastic. The organisation and communication was of a high standard. The catering was amazing – and I was really impressed with the „special diets‟ catering. As a course for first time directors the course content was very good; not to detailed so as to be too much for people to comprehend but still enough that it touched on all the areas/topics needed to get a solid base understanding. David was very laid back and presented everything in a way that was easy to understand. He also responded to questions well. David has a very warm, calm style which kept the mood relaxed. His “What else?” catch phrase kept us on our toes and kept the mind working resulting is an exhausting first day. Great knowledge and I found it reassuring that he often commented that this was about his way and that there was no right or wrong. I was impressed with the skill that David presented with – he was able to communicate clearly the details we have to consider as directors, while we were all very aware of the skills he has as a director. David was an excellent orator and engaged us all from the onset. He was more than happy to take comments and contributions from the floor but took care to ensure that they stayed relevant to the day‟s topic. He used examples from productions we were familiar with which made it easier to visualise what he was describing. Great – never forgot that it was community theatre and didn‟t discount others‟ ideas just brought it back to his best scenarios while offering us fantastic info about Rehearsal Schedules and the role of the Director Personally I valued all the content. David paced the material very well. We could have talked for a week on the subjects so keeping it to the essentials was important. The course was a great balance between the nuts and bolts and creative skills. It actually was vital to have the detail provided in the „nuts and bolts‟ components to really help my understanding of the role of director. Also the practical directing (while slightly scary to start with) really helped me understand the crafting so much better. Thank you for the opportunity to learn so much about directing. I also enjoyed the opportunity to meet so many other like minded people from all over the country. I am hoping to be able to maintain many of those connections and perhaps use them as sounding boards when I need them. Good theatre means bigger audiences. MTNZ‟s proactive move to deliver this programme is critical for future success of us small groups of passionate, creative people! Some of the societies present obviously have a different structure to their society and more importantly their committees and this naturally dictates the requirements put on the directors they use. This is not a criticism at all but did affect the path the course took at times – I think it would be fair to say that I felt at times some questions were being asked that were more relevant to the structure of an effective committee rather than the “job” of a director. To that end it made us feel very proud of the procedures we have in place and the effectiveness/experience of our committee and production personnel, given the smaller nature of our community as a whole A fantastic opportunity for professional development. Thank you for the chance to participate. I came with a view I was not at all likely to ever direct a show, and left thinking I found this really empowering in a creative way and I am now seriously considering putting my hand up to direct a show. This type of course is imperative for community theatre in NZ. We need new directors and we need them now. 6 The Two Day Graduates and David Adkins in the front row The One Day Graduates So the BIG NEWS IS – yes we are going to hold the same school in Hamilton, Queens Birthday Weekend 2012, so put the dates in your diaries now 2 – 4 June. No details as yet, or costings etc. (we will apply again to Creative NZ and perhaps look at some corporate sponsorship) but the South Island one was such a huge success and so many people are wanting to attend a North Island one, so it’s all booked in. And the best news is David will tutor the school again – so that’s fantastic news. 7 Technical News ETNZ Conference Report – Ngaire Holmes and I attended this conference two weeks ago in Auckland representing MTNZ. ETNZ (Entertainment Technology NZ) hold bi-annual conferences at the Telstra Clear Event Centre in Manukau. They need a lot more trade space than us and this venue caters for it very well indeed. After the opening address by retiring President Rob Peters, Kate Middleton-Oliver a graduate from Toi Whakaari did a presentation on her trip and work experience around theatre and concert hall venues around Europe – she obtained assistance for this through the Selecon Scholarship . Kate was an excellent speaker and Ngaire, Graeme, Diane (John Herber) and I were very impressed, so much so, that we have asked her to do her presentation at our Wanganui conference. She has achieved so much already in her career and both Ngaire and I felt that she would be a good role model for our younger members who are thinking about the technical side of the industry as a career option. We also talked to her about doing some kind of forum on stage management and her experiences – that is still work in progress at this stage Into the afternoon session and we had a presentation from Paul Collison who is lighting the opening and closing ceremonies of the Rugby World Cup. He took us through his lighting experiences of Beijing Olympics – it was very entertaining and very interesting. Some of the tech stuff went over my head of course, but he was a good speaker and very interesting to listen too. I have since found this on the internet about his experiences, so worth the read if you are interested http://www.tecnoprofile.com/home/revista_en_linea.php?op=1&id_nota=145 We then split into groups and Ngaire and I went to the small venue and maintenance health and safety as this was the most relevant topic for our membership. Really good topic of discussion – Graeme Philip from John Herber, Phil Conroy from Shand Shelton and Rob Peters were the panel, which was great. It was a really good discussion and MTNZ got involved Maintenance plans were a big discussion point and Ngaire and I found the topic really relevant for our members, so hence why the topic is now on the agenda of both our combined meetings. Rob also suggested it be a forum topic at our conference next year and we are hoping Grant Gilbert (new ETNZ President) might chair it if he is available. We also talked about including in our next survey some questions for our societies on theatre maintenance. We are going to work on a checklist for venues with ETNZ for our societies – a one page check list especially for the smaller venues that a society perhaps owns – ETNZ will help us out with that. We would also have it as a downloadable resource on our website as well. So a good session and we got a lot of out of it. Ngaire and I both attended the ETNZ AGM - the usual AGM items to get through and then we had a discussion about ETNZ and the direction they were heading in which was interesting for us to hear about. I also got up and thanked outgoing President Rob Peters for all his assistance given to MTNZ since 2005 when he first came to Ashburton conference. Rob has given up a lot of time and at no cost, to MTNZ and has been a huge resource for us. We are extremely grateful to Rob for all his help. Ngaire and I definitely think it is worthwhile MTNZ attending the ETNZ conference – like our conferences, it‟s all about the networking and getting more contacts and increasing knowledge, and also good to catch up with a number of our corporate members who attend, however, it would be good to see a few more MTNZ members at these conferences in the future. We look forward to working with Grant and the ETNZ Executive over the next year and thank the Executive for sending us to the conference on MTNZ‟s behalf. Collins, who bought the company in 1985 (with colleague Andrew Nichols) and has been instrumental in building the Selecon brand over the past quarter of a century, says he is moving on 'to a new stage' in his life. Since Philips acquired Selecon in April 2009, Collins has been a driving force in ensuring a smooth transition and further development of the Philips Selecon products. Selecon's specialty is in fixed luminaires for the theatre and for the specialised display, museum and art gallery market. Philips identified the entertainment market as of special interest to the company as part of its global strategy, and therefore purchased Selecon as part of its ambitions. Philips Selecon is now one of the world's leading manufacturers of lighting technology. In 2009 Jeremy Collins received the Entertainment Technology New Zealand Lifetime Achievement Award at the opening ceremony of NZ's bi-annual ETNZ Conference and Tradeshow held at the Telstra Clear Events Centre in Manukau, Auckland - from www.etnz.org What’s New From The Copyright Holders HOW I BECAME A PIRATE Synopsis Terrific songs like "A Good One To Boot," "Green Teeth," "I'm Really Just a Sensitive Guy," "You've Got to Talk Like a Pirate," "Pirates Dot Aaargh!," and many others will have your audience rolling in the aisles and leaving the theatre secretly wishing for Braid Beard and the gang to one day pay them a visit! Young Jeremy Jacob is digging in the sand at North Beach when he is greeted by Captain Braid Beard and his mates, and is recruited to help find the perfect digging spot for their treasure. Boarding the ship, the Captain introduces the boy to his pirate crew who share with him the ins and outs of a pirate's life at sea. Jeremy is instructed on how to talk like a pirate and schooled in pirate manners and etiquette (or the lack thereof). In turn, Jeremy shares with them what a typical kid's day is like and the wondrous game of soccer! The pirate world proves to have many surprises for Jeremy Jacob, not the least of which is when the fearsome pirate Sharktooth admits to him that he is really just a sensitive guy! When a storm arises, the skills of the crew are called upon to steer the ship to safety and Jeremy Jacob begins to wonder if the pirate life is really for him. But all is well and they arrive back at the beach in time for soccer practice - but not before they survey the area, following the map that Jeremy has drawn for them, leading them to the perfect spot to bury the treasure - his own backyard! They reminisce that it's always good to go home and Jeremy realizes that the simple things in life, like a kiss and a warm tucking in at night, are among those that are most important. Parting is bittersweet, but before leaving, the pirates assure Jeremy that they will be back if he ever needs them. He only has to fly the Jolly Roger, or he can simply find them at pirates-dot-aarrgh! A story of adventure and finding one's own heart - a path that can't be found on any treasure map! Tony a member of the Jets falls in love with Maria, the sister of the leader of the Sharks and this sets the scene for the battle to the death that follows. There was a triple celebration for the Levin Performing Arts Society on Saturday 25 June. It was the grand opening of the new-look performing arts centre, a celebration of 25 years since the original opened, and a celebration that the building is now freehold. More than 60 people, including members of the society, the public, the Horowhenua District Council, and performing arts societies from around the region attended the opening. The upgrade of the building has taken 2 1/2 years to complete, and Levin Performing Arts Society president Chris Craddock said it was well worth it. There has been a facelift to the front of the building and a new fire security system has been installed. The ribbon was cut at 1.30pm by life member and patron of the society Pam Smith. The venue can fit up to 350 in the audience and there would be exciting shows coming up, Mr Craddock said. Little Shop of Horrors will open on July 29, and those at the centre opening were given a sneak preview of some of the musical numbers. The show features three Palmerston North thespians, Richard Rewa, Dave Hands and Janine Bonny. A Christmas variety show to be performed in November and December would also be a highlight for the society, Mr Craddock said. The mortgage on the building was paid off last year. "The centre's been a labour of love for the past 25 years," Mr Craddock said. "There was a really good feeling at the opening, a lot of people were there. It just shows what the theatre means to the people." Levin Performing Arts have built Little Shop of Horrors puppets for their July production and are looking to on hire them. All 4 Audrey II pods available plus grabber arm, extra roots and Finale Costumes. Puppets are both suitable for a small or large production of Little Shop of Horrors. Puppets come supplied with pictures and instructions and an instructional DVD on how to put all the puppets together which is simple and relativity quite quick to assemble. Michael Burton, an Actor/Director based in Napier, has launched an on-line database facility to assist theatres in New Zealand with casting and auditions. As so often happens in the world of amateur theatre, Michael was experiencing a poor turn out to one of his auditions despite having spent over $300 in advertising. Unable to successfully fill vital roles, he decided that enough was enough. When the show had to be cancelled, Michael was spurred into action and he launched a comprehensive free-to-use database facility for the benefit of theatre groups throughout New Zealand. Find my Cast was born. Functional and Safe...The site is a simple to use, searchable database with drop-down boxes enabling you to select gender, age range, location, dancing and singing ability etc. For backstage and production personnel, you can choose a particular skill such as; Production, Wardrobe, Publicity and this is especially helpful when looking for those elusive stage hands. Thought has gone into privacy too. There is a familiar opt-in registration process to guard against spammers and although performers sign up to be contactable and visible to users of the site, the more sensitive contact details are available only through actual theatre committees. These are vetted personally and not left to automation. The 'Add to the Pool of Talent' section is clear and simple too with tick boxes and a biography section for performers to list their achievements. A Welcome Resource All in all, this is a great site and many comments have been made to Michael for this excellent idea. The success or otherwise of the site is really is up to the theatre community itself. Since the site is purely a labour of love, Find my Cast is really dependant on our amateur theatre groups stepping up and giving Michael a great big hand for this tremendous effort. Email: [email protected] Website: http://www.findmycast.co.nz/ Michael will be doing a presentation at the Combined North Island meeting in Napier A reminder from the Charities Commission – please make sure the public see accurate, up to date information about your charity Did you know that in the last 12 months, there were around 475,000 visits to the online Charities Register? More than 158,000 people looked at the financial and other information about the 25,500 charities found there, and between them, they viewed almost half a million charity summary pages. That means it‟s highly likely that members of the public have been looking at your charity‟s details on the Register. People looking at your information could include donors, supporters, funders, journalists, other charities, community groups, researchers, and businesses – so it‟s really important to make sure your information on the Register is accurate and upto-date. The public can easily see your charity‟s name, address details, registration number, officers, the sector you are working in, your beneficiaries, your charitable purpose, copies of your rules, application and registration documents, any changes you have filed, and your Annual Returns and financial statements. If your Annual Return is overdue, the public will be able to see that, too. If you haven‟t already, we‟d like to invite you to check your summary page and the information about you that is publicly available on the Charities Register. It should take you around five minutes. And if you need to update your information, it‟s easy – just log in to your account, and file a Notification of Change form if you have changed your charity‟s name, officers, rules, purposes, balance date, or address for service (that is, the address to which we should send all formal correspondence). Helpful tip – if you have an email address or website, we recommend you include those on your Register page too, so supporters and donors can easily contact you. (After logging in, complete question 7 on the Notification of change form, called “Changes to other details [optional”]). New advanced search feature coming soon!! We are about to add another feature to the Charities Register – the „Advanced Search Option‟ for advanced users. This will help make all charities‟ data – including yours – more easily accessible, open and transparent to the public. It doesn‟t add any more 17 information to what is already available (and if we have agreed to withhold information about your charity, it will still be withheld), but it will make it easier to find data about the charitable sector. There‟s nothing you need to do – except to take five minutes to check you‟re happy with the information you‟ve already provided us with. Take five minutes – look up your charity now, and check your details Make sure your donors and supporters, and the public get the right facts about you – it‟s your data and your Register: Check your summary page Log in and update your details and information New Rules for Incorporated Societies? Currently much of the not-for-profit sector in New Zealand is governed by the century old Incorporated Societies Act 1908 – an Act which the Law Commission argues is in need of major reform. We know that wading through Government discussion documents for most people holds a similar appeal as going to the dentist. However, we are going through a period of considerable legislative and regulatory change in New Zealand and these discussion documents are important. No use complaining about the result if we don‟t get involved in the process. That said, we wanted to alert you to the Review of the Incorporated Societies Act 1908 in case you are connected to an Incorporated Society and would like to have your say. As part of our social responsibility, Hayes Knight intend to make a submission with our observations. The Law Commission is seeking feedback on a range of issues and options for reform, including: Whether all societies should, as a condition of incorporation, be subject to certain minimum governance rules that they cannot vary; Whether a new Act ought to provide a code that makes the obligations of committee members clearer; How the Act should provide for the resolution of disputes between members and their societies; What rules societies ought to be required to have in their constitution and the nature of those rules. Really Useful chair Mark Wordworth told Variety that one company will manage and program the seven West End theatres owned or co-owned by Lloyd Webber, while the second will oversee productions of the composer's musicals and control the rights to his body of work. The new structure will be in place by 2013, according to the trade paper. Cats is in development to return to the West End in 2013, co-produced (as was the original) with Cameron Mackintosh. Evita is already heading to Broadway in early 2012 in Michael Grandage's production that originated in the West End in 2006, starring Elena Roger in the title role. The Wizard of Oz, currently running at the London Palladium co-produced with Bill Kenwright, has Andrew Lloyd recently extended its current booking period through February 2012. The Webber Wizard of Oz currently holds the biggest advance of any show in the West End, Photo by Joseph and is grossing more on a week-to-week basis than any other show, Kenwright Marzullo/WENN has told Playbill.com. "Since we opened, it has been difficult, if not impossible, to get tickets for any of the three weekend performances that always play to capacity; we've averaged 19 just below 85 percent in a two-and-a-quarter-thousand-seat theatre, and returned a third of the capitalization just 12 weeks after the opening night. It's a hit!" The producer also revealed that they are currently in negotiation with "a major star" to take the show to Broadway. Productions are planned for Canada, Australia and a U.K. tour.
