In the Philippines, it is always advised to bring
clothes for hot weather. Bring light clothes. It’s always safe to have those handy white shirts around.
Like in any foreign country, be careful of pickpockets. Always bring that handy insect-repellant. When
shopping, always haggle. Mingle with the locals.
They always give the best tips. Be adventurous!
Pack light. Bring only essentials like sunscreen,
medicine, at least two swimsuits, extra plastic bags,
a pair of slippers, one formal clothing (just in case),
toiletries, camera and extra money. Plan your outfits
prior to leaving to avoid packing too much or too
little. Write down all you intend to do to be more
organized.
Keep your cash hidden in different places just in
case you lose something. Make sure you leave
some room in your luggage for souvenirs or other
purchases.
Research about the place before traveling. It's best
to be informed about weather conditions, local
customs, hangouts, etc.

difference.” – an excerpt from Robert Frost’s The Road Less Travelled.
I remember trying to memorize this poem for an oral presentation back in highschool. Right
after that, I fell in love with this poem. It talks about how life is an adventure. Well, that’s my
take on it. With that in mind, we welcome you to our April-May Issue—our Summer Issue.
We would like to thank all of you who answered the call to “Be JUAN of us”. We really
appreciate your comments and emails of support. Trust that every issue we make, we have
you all in mind. We’re excited as we put out another issue of JUAN Philippines Magazine.

There are only two things that can
make me wake up in the middle of
the night—fire AND Bugsy’s Buffalo
Tenders.
Ask my brother.
So when I found out that we were
going to be doing a food review on
Bugsy’s Makati, I couldn’t sleep! I was
imagining chickens flying over and
around me and with the dip chasing
them! Man, that was a weird night.
It only got me hungrier. Poor bed
sheets.
Don’t worry, I won’t narrate how I
brushed my teeth and washed my
face before going to work that day
because I actually don’t remember
all that and just remember one thing
from that day—the Bugsy’s Buffalo
Tenders. Among other dishes.
That day was probably the fullest
and most satisfied I was. I’m not lying. I can still remember the smell of
my burp. Excuse me.
Now in two locations (the first one
in City Golf Plaza in Ortigas and
now one along San Agustin St. in
Salcedo Village, Makati), Bugsy’s Bar
and Bistro is certainly gangster. And
we mean this in the most positive
of ways. It’s just gangster. From the
name of the bar to the environment
inside. It really is gangster.
The food is great and the people
who are behind it are even better.
Visit the place once or twice and the
staff already know you by name.
And that’s what the owners want
the place to be known—a neighborhood bar. Where you can just come
in shorts and sandals (c’mon, don’t
come in a sando, you wise guy!)
and relax with your friends and
your officemates after work. Beer

Yeah, I do that when I’m

Warren’s Dip and Chips (P185). The
dip is an old family recipe of Miguel
and Bug Warren, co-owners of the
bar. Yes, a lot of customers (including us) have been trying to get the
two drunk so as to spill the beans
(no, beans are not part of it…or are
they?) on the recipe of the dip but to
no avail. Just another reason for you
to drink at Bugsy’s. Other must-try’s
are the Bugsy’s Famous Cured Beef
Surprise (more popularly known as
tapa), the Bugsy Siegel (steak that is
truly mouth-watering)
Oh, sorry, about that, we had to wipe
something off the magazine.
Anyway, other heavenly dishes are
the Bugsy’s Ultimate Oven-Baked
Burger (P305), the Lamb Chops (P395)
and the Fish and Chips (P185).
More than the food, it is the feel
of the place when you’re there.
Everyone seems friendly. For us, it’s
the perfect place to relax after a hard
day at work. There’s also a smoking
area. And it’s open from 11 a.m. (yes,
they serve lunch too!) until 5 a.m.
(breakfast?).
is just P55 and the food choices are
stomach-boggling (get it? Instead of
mind-boggling, I used “stomach.”
Get it now?).
We must warn you though. You
might not want to go back to the office once you’ve settled in for lunch.

The Philippines, being an archipelago, is surrounded with crystal blue waters, pristine white beaches and colorful marine
life. Every region boasts their famous beaches and it’s always a tough decision to make which one to choose because every
island offers something different and exciting – from island hopping, water sports, scuba diving etc. The beaches in the Philippines are truly a perfect complement to the tropical weather we have and as they say it’s always fun to play under the sun,
just make sure to apply enough sunblock.
So here’s my top three beach destinations in the Philippines, from its three major islands: Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao.
Luzon: A different world in El Nido
Being in El Nido is like being in a scene from the movie Waterworld. Imagine yourself riding the banca and
being transported into a different world - the soaring high cliffs are the majestic gates of the kingdom and
as your vessel moves in, towering rock formations and crystal clear lagoons welcome you. And as you look
into the water, a multitude of colorful fishes are swimming as if they are following you on your ride. El Nido
is simply a paradise where one can truly savor fresh air and appreciate the beauty of nature. It’s no wonder
why El Nido was hailed as UNESCO’s Protected Heritage Site. Everything is just perfect, it’s like everything has
been properly placed – the clear blue waters amidst the towering rock formations – a perfect backdrop for a
magical sunset.

Visayas: Island Adventures in Bantayan Island
Bantayan Island in Cebu is a new addition to the best beaches in the Philippines. Although, the island is
flocked by both local and foreign tourists, the place is still less populated and commercialized compared to
other well-known beaches in the country. The island of Bantayan is approximately three hours away from
Cebu City and from the ferry going there, you will notice a spread of white sand beach lined with tall green
coconut trees. One of the activities you can do in Bantayan is island hopping to the Virgin Island. Its clean
shores and white sandy beach is a testament to why the island is called “virgin”. The island is free from establishments and usual crowd noise – just the sun, sand and the sea. The whole virgin island is yours to enjoy by
listening to the crashing waves or simply enjoying an afternoon with family and friends.

Mindanao: Water Playground at the Malipano Beach (Davao)
Just across the Pearl Farm Beach Resort in Davao is the Malipano Beach. An island with towering coconut
trees, a chapel and nipa huts. But aside from this, the island boasts of powder-like white sand – a perfect
complement to its blue waters. One can truly enjoy the waters of Malipano with different water activities like
kayaking, jet skiing, scuba diving and snorkeling. A jumping board is also situated in the middle of the ocean
where one can enjoy unlimited splashing fun. But aside from this, the Pearl Farm Beach Resort also offers spa
services to relax sore muscles from a whole day of water fun. But if you can’t get enough of water, then enjoy
the resort’s infinity pool overlooking the Samal Sea – a perfect spot to enjoy Davao’s sunset.

It was whatever came our way for sure as JUAN embarked on
its first road trip of the year. Manila to Baguio. 250 kilometers
or so of traffic (along EDSA), habal habal’s, buses that get
maneuvered like cars (damn you, bus driver!), wide open roads,
the joy that is SCTEX and the beauty of the lush green spaces
along the road as we zipped by.
This is the JUAN Road Trip Series.
First stop—the Summer Capital of the
Philippines—Baguio.
Before we left, we made sure that we
won’t be Flintsone-ing our way up the
zigzag roads. Hence, the automatic car
check up.
Here are some car care tips
before you start that engine:
• Check all the fluids. From the engine
oil to the gas (duh!) to the brake fluid.
Everything that can dry up (oh, you
brought your grandma with you!), you
check it.
• Tires. Make sure that they’re thicker
than your face and that the tire pressure is set to the one written on your
manual. Check also if your shocks are
still in place (if not, tell your overweight
cousin that the trip got cancelled).
• Security. Are your spare tires in place
or were you a victim of another practical joke? Go check now. Don’t forget to
bring the jack and wheel wrench too.
• Drive carefully. There’s no substitute
to being alert on the wheel. Don’t be
crazy. Wait for the next best pass and
be patient. Overtaking one car is not
worth your life and those with you in
the vehicle.

Okay, now for the gadgets

• MP3 Player. Yup, no endorsements
here, hehe. Set up a Road Trip playlist
too. Ours were full of 90s songs
(Eraserheads, Stone Temple Pilots,
Guns n’ Roses, Nirvana, Parokya ni
Edgar and Boy George—kidding!).
Oh, you need an FM transmitter too
to be sure.
• Digicam. To document all the places
you visited and also to catch those
embarrassing moments. Haha. There
are so many beautiful sites in the
Philippines. Capture them all.
• Cellphone. So you can contact your
loved ones when you get lost. Kidding. For emergency purposes. And
also if your phone has a nice camera
or video recorder.
• Laptop. If you need to check your
email or need to send some proposals
or if you really love writing, then a
laptop or a netbook would be a great
companion too.
How do you set the mood of
the trip? With music, of course!

for pictures and also to protect the
windows of your soul from the heat
that is the center of the solar system.
It makes some girls pretty
too.
• Sneakers. Either
