LINED DAMS
DAM SEEPAGE LOSSES
Based on a 20ML dam with the following assumptions:
• Silty clay – Poor untreated clay
• Clay – Semi-engineered clay
• HDPE – lined
ML\year
• 20ML
• 3m deep
• 1.5m pressure head
Seepage loss from semiengineered clay dam is 1.5 x the

HANNEMANN FARMS RAINWATER HARVEST
• 1,700ha of continual cropping county located on the Eyre Peninsula, South Australia
• The farm receives an average of 400millilitres p/annum rainfall with no connection to SA Water’s
mains supply
• Previously they were carting water for their stock from a standpipe in Cleve which was costly and
time consuming
• Installed a 4,100m2 lined catchment area on a strategic site, rain is collected and stored in a lined
1.3ml dam (1,200m2 x 3m deep)
• A floating cover was installed acting as a second catchment area to increase rainwater harvest
• Without the cover, if the dam is full it would lose more than 2m/70% volume over 12 months
• For every 1millilitre of rain, the system collects 1L of water with the potential to collect 1.2ml of
water over 12 months

• The water is gravity fed to troughs in each paddock with no pumps
required due to the strategic location of the dam
• The Hannemann Farm dam and reticulation system is in use, and supplied more than 100,000L
for crop spraying during the first season after completion.
• The average rainfall in the area is 200mm – 300mm.

Developed in the 1950’s in USA
Technology has evolved to using alternative materials
Cover design is mostly “defined sump”
Up to 200ML volume is not untypical (Barwon Water)
Largest cover in southern hemisphere is Potts Hill Reservoir 360,000m2 (installed by Fabtech)
Design life 20 years
Costs are size and complexity dependant
