HUSKER NEWS ’N VIEWS
JUNE 2015
Are You Ready for Prime Time?
Unless you have been hiding under the hood of a ’73 roadster since
last year, you already know that Omaha is the home of the 2016
NCCC Convention and Cornhusker Corvette Club is the host.
Our 2016 Convention Directors are recording another movie of CCC
in action for the entire NCCC to see. It is extremely important to
have as many of our 400 members attend this month as we can. We
need to pack the house. Come be a part of history making at its
best. Wear a red or white club shirt. If you do not have one, no
worries, wear any plain red or white shirt. We want everyone to be
included.
Meeting starts promptly at 7:30 pm. Come early to visit and enjoy
the buffet. Please sure to bring your non-perishable items for our
charity food bank. Also, bring non-colored newspapers for Hearts
United for Animals.

Huber Hosts Armed Forces Appreciation Show
After a rather dry winter, Mother Nature has decided to make up for it with plenty of late spring rains.
The morning started with plenty of gray skys, but that didn’t stop over 40 Corvettes and one Harley from
showing up at Huber Chevrolet for a benefit car show. Mother Nature was kind to those who attended
by holding off the rain and clearing as the morning
went on.
The theme was Armed Forces Appreciation, and
most cars were decorated for the occasion. The
voting was done by donations. Buckets were
placed in front of the vehicles and people voted
by putting money in the bucket. Prizes were
awarded for the first 3 places. The donations
went to Moving Veterans Forward, a non-profit
organization that helps veterans get established.
The people of Huber were wonderful hosts.
The event started with one of Huber’s
employees singing the national anthem.
She was Fantastic! In fact, she will be in the
auditions for the next season of the TV
singing competition show, “The Voice”. We
will be watching proudly for that.
Lunch was provided by Huber’s with some excellent Bar-B-Que and
great side dishes. We were in Hog Heaven!
First place went to Ray Kennedy with his Harley
Davidson motorcycle. It could be the first time a
motorcycle has won a Corvette show.

Meet and Greet – Plattsmouth
We know that “Meet and Greet” gatherings are popular because it combines the two things CCC
members enjoy most – driving Corvettes and eating. So, what happens when the forecast is for the
possibility of heavy rain? Just like the postman, not rain nor snow nor dark of night can keep CCC
members from their appointed dinner. However, the Corvette may not be included.
More than 40 members met at a vacant
parking lot south of Omaha and cruised
to Mom’s in Plattsmouth. As you can
see, many showed up without their
Corvettes, but not without their
appetites.
The award of positive thinking went to Steve and Nancy
Bronner, who defied the weatherman and arrived with their
top down. They were rewarded with a clearing skies and a
beautiful evening.
From there, it was a short drive into beautiful downtown
Plattsmouth.
Mom’s turned out to be just like it sounds – a charming place with great comfort food and large portions
and a friendly staff. They were definitely thrilled to have us, and made it clear we were welcome any
time in the future. Based on this experience, we will be back.

Welcome to Mom’s!

Checking Out the High Speed Track
It was a perfect day to take a few hot laps around the racetrack that will be used for High Speeds at next
year’s convention. The track is located on Interstate 29 near the Glenwood exit.
The track was checked out thoroughly, and some drivers decided to take a few laps.
The plan was to get a video of a car going around the track at near-race speeds. To do this, a Go Pro
Camera was attached to the driver’s door of George Horst’s car. Then he followed Gene Gau around the
track. A drone was also used to get overhead pictures and videos.
Here is the view from inside George’s car as they raced around the track.
You may be thinking, “I would love to do that!” Be
sure to mark your calendar for August 8th & 9th,
when the trial run will be out there.

Racing Comes to Lincoln
Ah, these are the days we dreamed of last winter when those north winds were blowing. Summertime
autocross racing in the heartland. Sipping on a cold beverage while trying to avoid using the air
conditioner while speeding around hot asphalt.
Does this look like
what you were
dreaming of? Didn’t
think so. Let’s face it;
Mother Nature has
been a bit flakey this
spring. Temps started
in the upper 40’s and
low 50’s as we found
ways to keep warm.
Fashion was not an issue and helmets were not just for racing. Coffee was very popular.
In spite of the weather, most people found a way to have fun. Some are way too serious.
Ray Kennedy wore his referee uniform and called a time out in the action. This turned out
to be more accurate than he had imagined, because an issue with the timing gear caused a
delay in the start of racing. Of course, CCC has the best and brightest timers in the nation
and it was not long before we were off and racing.

Peers All Corvette Show
Don Peers has had his challenges the past month. After
being sidelined with an injury, he was hoping for a great
show. All he wanted was time to prepare for it, good
weather and a great turnout. It spite of not having any
of those come true, Don was still in good spirits. You
can’t keep a good man down. Many members of CCC
still showed up to show their support. By mid morning,
the weather had started to clear and the sun started to
peek out. Better times ahead, Don. Don was supposed
to use his scooter, but it was a bit too slow and confining
at times. He does have plans to put a V8 in it.
The show was a fundraiser for the Soap
Box Derby (which Don is still trying to get
an exception to compete in). Several of
the racers were on display with their
proud owners. They represent a lot of
hard work and really are works of art.
Congratulations!

North O Airport Veterans Appreciation Car Show
Finally! Summer has actually arrived! What a great day to spend with friends and veterans with the
background of the North Omaha Airport. Admission was canned food that was donated to charity.
Corvettes were not the only cars to gaze at. There were plenty of classic and custom cars, as well as
some beautiful motorcycles on display.
Spectators were treated to a stunt
flying show by National and World
Champion Debby Rihn-Harvey.
She wowed the crowd with loops,
dives and low-level passes.
Just imagine what she could do behind the wheel of a Corvette!
Debby is in her late 60’s with no plans for slowing down yet. You
Rock Debby!
Here is Bob Hegwood with Debby. Bob knew Debby in high school.
He was taking driving lessons and she was taking flying lessons!
Brian Barney snapped this one! Thanks Brian
11
Organizer and fellow club member Ray Kennedy
treated other club members to lunch that featured
hamburgers and hot dogs from Omaha Steaks.
Thanks Ray! That was very generous of you.
One of the top attractions at the show was a
section of the World Trade Center. A bronze
plaque gave the history and details of this pice of
history.
Daughters of the American Revolution honored
veterans who attended by presenting them with
certificates and pins in appreciation of their
service. This is what the day was really all about.
What a nice tribute.
The show ended with all of the Corvettes taking a trip down the runway. Organizer Ray Kennedy
thanked everyone at the end of the runway. What a great experience.

Eat
Meet & Greet - Bennington
Another Meet & Greet – another
chance for thunderstorms. Does
Mother Nature have it in for us?
People are beginning to talk! Still, we
know that members of CCC will show
up for food, even without their
Corvettes. And that is just what
they did – all 57 of them.
This edition of All-You-Can-Eat was
held at Nate’s Stumble Inn at
beautiful downtown Bennington.
Former owners Denny and Mary Ann
Laaker seemed so much more relaxed
than last time. As far as we know, no
one left hungry or thirsty. The night
ended with the traditional group hug.

The American Dream
By Chris Tooker
The Corvette is not just a car. It’s not just a high-performance vehicle. It’s not simply the best bang for
the buck among sports cars. The Corvette is the embodiment of every American value my parents
instilled in me.
Work hard. Treat people with respect. Help others whenever you get the chance. Those were the
principles I learned at home and in the garage. I was told that if I lived by those principles, I would
succeed. I could become whatever I wanted to become as long as I was dedicated to my goals and
remained disciplined.
Some families go camping, skiing, or
boating. Other families vacation
overseas. Instead, my family built cars
and bench-raced in the garage (benchracing is our term for talking about all the
things you would do and how awesome
your car would be, if you only had
enough money). However, our time in
the garage wasn’t limited to fantasizing
about how fast or how cool our Corvettes
would be if we won the lottery. This was
my family bonding time with my parents,
my uncle, and my grandfather. It was my
chance to ask questions about school, relationships, faith, careers, and anything else that came to mind.
When we were in the garage, my family gave me advice on everything I was going through and
everything I observed outside of our home. Based upon their life experiences, I was able to make better
sense of my own experiences and stay on track to achieve my goals. I would not be who I am today
without their guidance and support, which often came in between oil changes, tire rotations, and
conversations about our common passion for Corvettes.
We currently have four of the
seven Corvette generations in
the family. My triple black 2000
is in Omaha, where I live. My
dad’s silver 2005, my 1994
Greenwood, and my
grandfather’s red 1972 are in
Colorado, where we compete in
quarter-mile drag races for
Corvette Connection at
Bandimere Speedway. My next
goal is to purchase a C7 for my
mother. She’s still deciding
15
which color and trim she wants (maybe the Grand Sport will finally be revealed by then???), but two
things are certain; she’ll immediately have the second fastest car in the family and she’ll be the coolest
mom in town.
What we enjoy most about being part of Corvette clubs like the Cornhusker Corvette Club and Corvette
Connection is that the other members share our values and passions. Even when the races get rained
out at Bandimere or a cruise ends up being a lot longer and a lot hotter than we anticipated, we still
have a great time because of the people we’re with. Everyone is encouraged to join and participate,
regardless of their background, skill, or experience (try finding that in your local Porsche or Ferrari
clubs). Our monthly meetings and races also start with the pledge of allegiance and an invocation (sadly
a dying tradition in some other organizations across the country). However, our favorite Corvette
tradition is the Corvette wave. Why don’t import tuners or Mustang owners wave at each other in
acknowledgment as they pass each other on the streets? Why don’t Challenger or Camaro owners give
each other so much as a nod in passing? Call me crazy, but I believe more than just looks and
performance draw people to the Corvette. The Corvette is America’s sports car and it will always
represent the American values and principles my family shares with our fellow club members. I’m proud
to be a Corvette owner and an American. Our Corvettes are a constant reminder to me of what I believe
in and what I’m striving for.
Thank you again.
P.S. Thank you to all those who sent condolences for the loss of my uncle. I
received cards from Cornhusker Corvette Club members I had not even met
yet. That kindness and support to a stranger who just recently joined the
club are the exact reasons we feel so connected to other Corvette owners. It
solidifies my convictions about our common values and makes me even
more proud to be a member.
ROAR INTO OMAHA - CONVENTION 2016
Ron Norgard is still in need of large ice cream buckets with
lids. As much as Ron loves ice cream, he
can’t do this alone. You owe it to your club
to eat more ice cream!
Save your ice cream buckets and bring to
the General Meeting. Also, we need red,
white, and blue poker chips if anyone has
some they would be willing to donate.

Carl and Margo Bertch were CCC members for many years. Carl was a
recognized authority on Corvette “correctness,” and Margo was known
for her warm personality and wry sense of humor. Carl passed away in
2014, and Margo moved to Ellijay, Georgia, which is about 270 miles
southeast of Bowling Green, KY.
Margo no longer has the 1997 Corvette she won at Bloomington Gold,
but she would like to stay in touch with her friends in Cornhusker
Corvette Club. She has a spare room in her new home, and she would
welcome a visit if you are traveling down her way.

be able to take trips down memory lane whenever we choose.
But wait…..there is more! When we have pictures in the newsletter of the past month’s activities, we
will put a link in the newsletter to the rest of the photos on the website. The website is at
www.CCCmemories.com. The activities are available by year with drop-down menus. It is still a work in
progress. So far, there are a few events from this year available. We plan to have all of the pictures

The Top 10 Reasons the Newsletter Was Late
