Legal Services of the Hudson Valley focuses on
legal representation and advocacy for PLWHAs including:

Experience and passion for this mission is why
Legal Services of the Hudson Valley has been
able to provide free legal assistance to nearly
300,000 clients since it was founded in 1967. With
offices in White Plains, Yonkers, Mount Vernon,
Peekskill, Newburgh, Kingston, Spring Valley,
and Poughkeepsie, the 120-member staff plus our
volunteer attorneys serve approximately 13,000
clients each year.
HIV/AIDS Project
Legal Services of the Hudson Valley fights to protect
low-income and newly unemployed people living
with HIV/AIDS (PLWHAs) and their families from
discrimination, loss of their homes, and domestic
violence, and also seeks to provide assistance with
accessing medical and other public benefits and
with debtor-creditor matters. We provide services
throughout Westchester, Putnam, Rockland,
Dutchess, Orange, Sullivan and Ulster Counties.
LSHV’s services are funded, in part, by the U.S. Department of Health
and Human Services, the New York State Office for the Aging, and
Department of Health, The Westchester County Department of
Senior Programs and Services, and the Westchester County Office
for Women.
HIV Confidentiality
• Advocacy and representation of PLWHAs whose
HIV confidentiality has been breached in violation of
the state and federal laws.
• We train and educate community, social service and
medical providers on HIV Confidentiality laws.
Government Benefits
• Advocacy and representation of PLWHAs
improperly denied government benefits including
Food Stamps, Social Security Disability, Medicaid,
Public Assistance and Unemployment.
Eviction Prevention/Housing Law
• Advocacy and representation of PLWHAs in
nonpayment, holdover, and Section 8 hearings.
• Litigate issues of hazardous conditions that impact
the health of PLWHAs.
Guardianship, Advanced Directives & Family Law
• Advocacy and representation of PLWHAs including
standby guardianship designations, guardianship
representation, health care proxies, living wills
and wills.
• Advocate and represent PLWHAs seeking
modifications of child support orders and custody &
visitation orders.
Debt Relief & Bankruptcy
• Advocate and represent PLWHAs in debtor-creditor
matters. Where appropriate, we assist PLWHAs in
filling for Chapter 7 or Chapter 13 bankruptcies.

of Health, AIDS Institute and the Ryan White Care
Act, Title 1.
