Bruce hosted the Annual State of the
City this past Saturday and opened with
a strong message to residents saying, “If
we don’t take our responsibility seriously,
we could lose everything in the process
and those freedoms that were once
secured for us. This is why I encourage
everyone in the community to vote. This
is why I encourage residents to come to
City Council Meetings, and this is why I
encourage people to get every side of the
story before developing an opinion.”
Bruce speech then focused on three
aspects within the city, the Good, the Bad,
and the Ugly.
The good news is that the city of
Hawaiian Gardens does not have any debt
and boasts an $18 million budget.
The bad news, as Bruce called it, is
that roughly 70% of that budget comes
from one source, the Hawaiian Gardens
Casino.
The City and the Casino have a healthy
relationship, “However,” said Bruce, “this
is not a good position for a city to be in,
relying on one source for a large amount
of its income.”
The Casino has grown in business
and doubled its size, but Council wants
to encourage new business into the city.
Hawaiian Gardens has many programs
in place to help current owners keep their
establishments and properties in good
repair. One such plan is the Upgrade
Signage program where the city will pay

La Mirada Residents Complete
Disaster Response Training Course
CERT participants recently completed a 20-hour course offered by Los Angeles County Fire Department.
Trainees took part in a full scale search and rescue simulation as part of their training. Complete story

The ABC into the Summer Fun Run
2K and 5K Run/Walk went off splendidly
even though the temperatures were
soaring by 7:00 am. The Fun Run is
organized specifically for small children,
walkers and parents with strollers as well
as serious runners. The Fun Run also
included a Community Wellness Fair with
a healthy food area, a Kid’s Fun Zone and
community sponsored booths to raise
awareness of the importance of health and
exercise. This year’S the event attracted
over 800 runners.
Over $45,000 in total revenue was
raised with an additional $21,500 provided
as in-kind support from sponsors; net
proceeds raised over $10,000. Major
sponsors, included Los Cerritos Center,
the Los Cerritos Community News, LBS
Financial Credit Union, and Wesley
Health Centers; the Run had over 60
community sponsors contributing to the
event’s success.
“The proceeds from this Fun Run
will support the Foundation’s grants to
teachers and schools, or will go directly
to pay for student supplies, such as back
packs and school necessities,” stated
Century 21 ASTRO realtor Mark Anthony
Ruiz, president of the ABC Education
Foundation Board.
Over 100 volunteers from the Girl
Scouts, the cities of Cerritos and Hawaiian
Gardens, and ABC staff ensured the Fun
Run was safe and fun. Bands from Gahr
High School and Tetzlaff Middle School
and volunteers, served as “cheerleaders”
lining the course, cheering runners on.
The Fun Run was held Saturday, June
18th at Los Cerritos Shopping Center.
There were three runs, the 5k run/walk
began at 7:45am and the 2k run/walk began
at 9:00am with a Kids Run beginning at

KNABE HONORED AT ARTESIA CITY COUNCIL MEETING

Supervisor Don Knabe continued his
farewell tour this month with a stop at
the June Artesia City Council meeting.
Knabe thanked City Council for their
years of fostering a great working
relationship. “As I end my career in
politics this coming December, I want to
thank each and every one of you in the
great city of Artesia and say thank you
for allowing me to represent you.”
Knabe is completing 20 years as
Supervisor, 14 years as Chief of Staff
and before that former Mayor and
Councilman for the neighboring city
of Cerritos. “My sole purpose is to
thank each one of you for your gracious
support.”
Mayor Manalo stated,” We have so
much to be thankful for here in the City
of Artesia, and obviously very thankful
to have been recipients of our brand new
library, which was made possible by
Supervisor Knabe. On a personal note,
it has been wonderful for me to see how
much you really care about the people
you serve in your County.”
In other council business, Certificates
of Recognitions were given to Bhindi
Jewelers, Denny’s Restaurant and
Mirage by Samar for most improved
appearance. Mirage by Samar is one
of Artesia’s premier clothing stores,
and Mayor Victor Manalo stated how
grateful they were for the company’s
efforts in beautifying their property and
providing a pleasant experience to their
customers.
Dr. Jose Fierro, President and
Superintendent of Cerritos College
presented the College Complete
Scholarship Program to Council. The
program focuses on student performance,
access and completion, and is essentially
a scholarship-based program. Rather
than offering a free tuition, the College
decided to encourage successful
completion of the courses taken. “We
want to focus on students graduating and
earning their degree, focusing on access,
success and completion,” said Fierro.
Serving over 24,000 students, the
College is a diverse institution, with
70% of student’s receiving financial
aid. Beginning this fall high school
graduates from the area must complete
AOC, submit a K-16 bridge commitment
contract and a summer connections
enrollment contract as well as the
courses associated, submit a two year
education plan for counselor approval,
and complete English and math
courses. Students must also attend K-16
requirements and workshop, follow a
prescribed education plan and complete
and submit a FAFSA. In return students
will receive one year free tuition, $100
per semester for books and an enrollment
fee waiver with step by step assistance
from counselors. Currently the College
has 600 students currently enrolled in the
program.
The Artesia Library is kicking off
lots of summer fun, with a summer
reading program, last year over 500
people participated in the program.
Children are being encouraged to use the
online plan where they can connect with
other children reading at the same level.
Saturday Book Buddies will be held
every Saturday as well as a children’s
robotics program.

the Performing Arts
garnered second place
in the Performing Arts
category. The City’s
TV3 Community
Bulletin Board, which
provides public service announcements to
residents, won third place.

CERRITOS RESIDENT HEADED TO JOHNS HOPKINS
AS A 17-YEAR-OLD JUNIOR

Current Early Entrance Program
student and former Whitney High
School student Rushabh Doshi will be
headed to Johns Hopkins University as
an incoming junior this upcoming fall
semester to study Public Health. His
goal is to become a medical doctor.
“My parents have been my greatest
influence. Seeing them thrive and do exceptionally well in their respective medical careers inspires me and motivates
me to do just the same. My brother has
always supported me and has stuck
behind me. My family has simply been
great, this wouldn’t be possible without
them,” Doshi told HMG-CN.
Halfway through his sophomore
year, Doshi learned about the Early
Entrance Program at California State
University of Los Angeles, a program
that allows gifted students as young as
the age of 11 to go to a university setting and advance their education.
After seeing the opportunities that
the Early Entrance Program could
provide for his career, Doshi applied,
passed the required tests, and underwent
a rigorous 6-week academic summer
session. After the session, Doshi learned
that he was accepted into the Johns
Hopkins matriculating class as one of
the thirty-one students.
With support from his brother, parents, and grandparents, Doshi made the
decision to leave high school and join
the university at the tender age of 15.
“Attending the Early Entrance Program was amazing for me because it allowed me to gain a sense of urgency. It
made me realize that every single thing
that I did counted from now on and the
only path to success was working hard
and smart,” Doshi stated.
Doshi made sure to make the most
of his two years at the Early Entrance
Program. He immediately joined and
became a leader in many clubs on
campus, including the American Medical Student Association, Chemistry and
Biochemistry Club, and the TEDx club.
He was a Dean’s list recipient in every
quarter of his attendance and received
special recognition from the Honors
College several times. He rotated with
doctors at USC Keck School of Medicine during his freshman year in order
to expose himself to the many areas of
medicine.
However, he didn’t stop there. In
the summer after his freshman year, he
started researching with a gastroenterologist at Cornell Medical School for
two and a half months. Doshi studied
issues in the GI tract, especially those
pertaining to pancreas. Doshi led his
own project and published a unique use
of EUS-Guided Drainage for recurrent
pancreatitis as a first author. He contributed to several other projects, including
an academic paper that showed the different types of management of pancreatic fluid collections. After coming back,
he resumed different medical research
at both USC and UCLA.

After deciding that Public Health
was the major for him, he applied to
Johns Hopkins.
At Johns Hopkins, Doshi plans to
become heavily involved in the community as well as conduct research at the
world-renown Hopkins Hospital. He is
in the process of learning about Medical
School admissions and has started preparing for the Medical College Admissions Test (MCAT).
“My grandpa always wanted his
grandkids to go into medicine and that’s
exactly what I plan on doing,” said
Doshi.

On June 4, the Cerritos Senior Dance
Club inducted new officers, the event
was held at the Cerritos Senior Center in
Cerritos California.
The new President of the club is
Lilian Leonardo Goings, and outgoing
President Juanita Cantano.

holds ballroom dances evey 2nd and
4th Thursday of each month, from 6:00

PATHWAYS VOLUNTEERS: Dealing With Loneliness
Helps Seniors Stay Independent and at Home
Benina Sanchez' change was "remarkable" after
she was assisted by volunteers to "get out more."

Benina Sanchez had to learn how to
live on her own after her husband passed
away a couple of years ago. She has
leaned many new skills, but the hardest
part of this new normal was dealing with
the loneliness.
Recent studies show that isolation/
loneliness among adults 50+ and older,
is a growing epidemic and puts them
59% more likely to experience a decline
in their ability to perform their daily
activities. (National Institute on Aging
Health & Retirement Study in the
Archives of Internal Medicine).
Pathways Volunteer Coordinator,
Meg Fisch, was contacted by a
concerned family member and went out
to meet with Benina. She observed that
Benina was very upset, cried a lot and
felt very isolated. She had a scooter to
help her get around but didn’t have a
ramp that allowed access for the scooter.
Meg was able to call in a trusted
volunteer to install a new ramp for her.
This enabled Benina to gain access in
and out of her house with complete
freedom.
Benina was also provided a volunteer
who meets weekly with her to chat, run
errands and occasionally take her out for
a bite to eat. Benina say “My volunteers
are my angels! I just don’t know what I
would do without them!”
When Benina’s volunteer brought
her to a recent Pathways event, the
change in her was remarkable. She
was dressed up, smiling and engaged in
conversation…a complete contrast to
how she was observed just a few short
months ago. As we celebrate our nations
Independence, Pathways also celebrates
the Independence of Seniors who are
helped through their programs and
services.
Pathways is a local non-profit
organization committed to providing
compassionate care to those living with
illness and loss. If you would like more

ABC AD HOC BOARD ADVISORY COMMITTEEFACILITIES MEETINGS SCHEDULED
At the April 19, 2016 meeting, the
ABC Unified School District Board
of Education approved the formation
of the Ad Hoc Board Advisory
Committee on Facilities. The purpose
of the Committee is to evaluate capital
improvement needs of the District and to
provide recommendations to the Board
of Education on long-range facilities
planning. The Committee will review,
amend, revise, update, and prioritize the
current Facilities Master Plan.
The 19 member Committee, made
up of community members, parents,
teachers, support staff, and students,
held its first meeting on June 1, 2016
at the District Office. The Committee
plans to meet at least once a month, with
additional meetings scheduled as needed,
to carry out its work. The Committee
will consider, but not be limited to, the
following:
1. Current and projected school
enrollment for each grade level, based
on residential housing growth patterns
in accordance with city/county general
plans and other demographic factors
2. The District’s educational goals,
including the District Strategic Plan and
Local Control Accountability Plan
3. Current and projected educational
program requirements to ensure that our
schools are physically equipped to deliver
the instructional programs
4. Student safety and welfare

Graduation Rates Climb to
94 Percent in 2014-15

Norwalk-La Mirada Unified boosted
its graduation rates in 2014-15 to 94
percent through initiatives that integrated
digital tools into classrooms, enhanced
curriculum to improve critical thinking
and teamwork, and personalized learning
to meet the needs of each student.
The boost represents a nearly 10
percent climb in graduation rates over
five years. “The District continues
to strengthen our college and career

Hasmik Danielian said. “Congratulations
to all of our esteemed Norwalk-La Mirada
Unified graduates. ” The graduation rate
for the District’s three comprehensive
high schools reached 96.2 percent. La
Mirada High has graduated its seniors
consistently above 95 percent since
2009-10, climbing to 97.8 percent in
2014-15. Norwalk High jumped to 95.8
percent and John Glenn High graduated
94.7 percent. Additionally, Southeast
Academy, the District’s high school
focused on careers in law enforcement,
military and related fields, has graduated
100 percent of its senior class since 2008.
The rates are for a four-year cohort of
students who enrolled in high school as
freshmen in 2011-12. This is the sixth
year California has used the method for
measuring graduation rates, aided by a
data system that tracks students when they
switch schools, drop out or continue their
education without graduating. The federal
government now uses a similar four-year
cohort model. “By personalizing our
approach to education, we are providing
more and more opportunities for our
students to excel, ” NLMUSD Board
President Karen Morrison said. “Our
growing rate of students graduating high
school is a testament to the excellent job
being done by our dedicated teachers and
staff. ” Norwalk-La Mirada continues to
implement its 2020 Learning Initiative,
which will provide students with the
skills to use essential digital tools to
increase their understanding of classroom
subjects. By 2018, teachers, students
and parents will have nearly real-time
access to current data on student learning
performance and will use that data to
personalize teaching and learning.
Let Freedom Ring
Celebration Planned
The 43rd Annual Let Freedom Ring
Celebration takes place Monday, July
4 from 4 to 9 p.m. at the Cerritos Civic
Center. The event includes food, game
booths, rides and entertainment. A formal
City Council bell-ringing ceremony is
set for 6:30 p.m. A fireworks show at 9
p.m. concludes the event. Bring a blanket
or chair to view the fireworks. Barbecues
and picnicking are not allowed.
All-day ride wristbands are available
for $15 before Friday, July 1. On
Monday, July 4, the wristbands will be
$20. Individual tickets are $1 each. The
Family Pack, which includes 20 tickets,
is $15.
All northbound and southbound lanes
of Bloomfield Avenue will be closed
from Towne Center Drive to 183rd Street
from 7 p.m. on Sunday, July 3 to 2 a.m.
on Tuesday, July 5. All eastbound and
westbound lanes of 183rd Street will
be closed from Bloomfield Avenue to
Cortner Avenue from 8 to 10 p.m. on

Intergenerational Programming
Continues in the Summer
During the school year, the Cerritos
Senior Center hosts intergenerational
programs with senior volunteers and
Carver Academy schoolchildren. The
program is the award-winning series
called SPICE (Seniors Personally
Involved in Children’s Enrichment). The
mission of SPICE is to bring together
individuals from different generations
and have them participate in activities
that allow for meaningful, positive
interactions. In the summer, grandparents
and grandchildren are invited to visit the
Cerritos Senior Center to celebrate a
summer-themed intergenerational series
called Grandparents’ Month.

The city of Artesia can add another
great restaurant to its list of places to
visit. Last week Bowls by 39 Degrees
opened their third sushi café in the area.
“It is sort of like a sushi subway,” said
owner Paul Phiboolsook, “we serve fresh
poke (pronounced po-kee), and offer our
clients the opportunity to customize their
own bowls, but if customizing gives
you a migraine we have nine signatures
bowls to choose from.”
Poke is one of the main dishes on the
menu. Poke is a raw fish salad served as
an appetizer in Hawaiian cuisine. Poke is
the Hawaiian verb for ‘section’ meaning
to slice or cut. Ahi poke is generally
made with yellow fin tuna but in modern
recipes raw salmon, octopus, and various
shell fish can be used, generally any bite
size appetizer seasoned with the common
poke seasonings.
The café is small but the menu is big
from Signature Bowls, Bowls Your Way,
Fryer selections, Fried Sushi Rolls and
lots of great extras from fresh edamame
to beef teriyaki bowls. I strongly suggest,
for your first visit, to order the Founders
Favorite with white rice. A generous
helping of Tuna, masago, avocado, and
corn sprinkled just right with la vida
loca sauce [Jabañero mayo]. I also added
crab, cucumber, edamame, seaweed and
mango. It was delicious.
Thursday, June 9th was the official
opening with a ribbon cutting by the
Artesia Chamber, with visits from
the Cerritos Chamber of Commerce
staff, friends and family. The first 39
customers received their orders for free.

and tee shirt.

ideas were tossed about – “got poke?” or
“got bowls?” – But when a credit card
commercial came on asking “What’s
in Your Wallet?” the slogan “What’s
in yours?” was conceived. “When you
come to dine with your friends, you can
ask ‘what’s in yours?” adds Kaye.
“Our taste is a bit different,” says
Phiboolsook, “we mix exotic taste from
Taiwan and Japan to create a unique
Asian fusion poke, taking the poke to
the next level.”

“The city can do a lot to bring new
business to our community, but the bottom
line is this ‘we’ the people that operate the
businesses need to keep those businesses
looking good and respect the properties.”
The City, in collaboration with the
Cerritos Regional Chamber of Commerce,
in looking to establish a Hawaiian Gardens
Chamber, which will lead to better business
owner communication and special events.
The council is currently working on
the new budget. The city is looking to hire
15 additional employees, but this means
almost $1 million in additional payroll and
benefits. Hawaiian Gardens employees 50
full time employees, 27 part time and 2835 seasonal employees.
Bruce also stated that if anyone wishes
to see how the money is being spent, the
budget is readily available online or can be
requested from the City Clerk. Many new
programs and projects are being discussed
and could be introduced within the year.
“Think about this folks, “said Bruce,
“70% of our $18 million budget comes
from the Casino.” He also added that
without the tax proceeds from the Casino,
Hawaiian Gardens would literally not
exist. He called for residents to be good
stewards of what they have been entrusted
with and to understand that it all must be
done with a balanced budget, not reaching
into the reserves.
The good news is that the City has $15
million in reserve. Council has worked
very hard to keep this, adding “Sometimes
we have say “no” to special projects.”
Although Bruce applauds a healthy
reserve, he also states that nothing has
been added to this in the past few years.
City Council would like to put at least $1
million a year into the reserve.
The City currently pays over $3 million
a year for law enforcement. Bruce said,
“and frankly our needs are not being met
by this department.” He went on to say,
“by and large you, the people, remind me
of this on a daily basis, and I agree with
you, but efforts are sabotaged by those
who are in fear and rage over the fiscal
mistakes of the past. Rather than taking a
look at realistic alternatives for the future,
some people would rather complain, bring
discord and problems.”
“And so we come to the ugly part of the
address,” said Bruce. “There will always
be self centered and dishonest individuals
among us disguised in many ways. We
the people must expose them and rise
above them. I am speaking of those selfish
people who deface the walls of our city
with graffiti and cost taxpayers thousands
of dollars a year. Those who pollute our
city and drive away business and promote
crime. Thos who carry out violence and
bring danger to our streets, our families
and our children. I am speaking of those
who bring drugs into our city and steal
from our neighborhoods. And dangerously
race cars through our streets. Those among
us who use their position of influence to
propagate lies, spread rumors, and push
their own agendas.”
Bruce called for residents to stand
up against this kind of madness and take
back the City. Bruce concluded by saying
“I am not a rich man, but I am an honest
man and I will always tell you the truth,
even though the truth can be ugly. I have
served our city for 33 years. I will always
look out for the best interests of Hawaiian
Gardens and do my best to put our people
first.”

with hunger this summer. Summer is a particularly tough
time for many food-insecure families because children can
no longer rely on the schools for nutritious meals putting an
added burden on these families.

HEMET-The Premier Girls Fastpitch
has been around for seven years and in all
but one of those years, Bob Medina, the
manager of the Artesia Punishers 18 Gold
travel softball team has participated in its
Southern California Qualifier, among other
qualifying tournaments. But Medina did
something last weekend at Diamond Valley Lake Community Park that none of his
previous teams had ever done.
The Punishers failed to win a game in
the So Cal Qualifier, losing to the (Orange)
Southern California A’s, managed by Peter Vecvanags,6-0 last Friday, then being
sent home early by the (Agoura Hills) Jets
3-2 last Saturday morning. Medina’s teams
have failed to earn an automatic berth to
the PGF National Championship from the
So Cal Qualifier and from 2010-2014, had
gone 12-8 in So Cal Qualifier games.
“Yesterday was frustrating also because
I know we have a younger class like I said
and I don’t want to keep going back there,
but the younger ones are expected to hit the
ball,” Medina said. “They’re good; we put
them on the team because they can hit. I
think the pressure in this situation is tough
and I told them that they need to make sure
that they do always hit the ball. If we don’t
support our pitcher, we’re not going to win.
Offense wins the game.”
The Jets took a 1-0 lead in the top of
the first inning when pitcher Leah Gonzales (Banning High/University of Hawai’i,
Hilo) walked Khenedi Johnson after an
eight-pitch battle. Following a sacrifice
from Gabi Hirsch, Johnson stole third and
scored on a groundout from Sage Miller.
But the Punishers rallied back in their
half of the frame. On the first pitch, shortstop Alexxis Ponce (Santa Fe High/Portland State University) doubled to center.
Two outs later, catcher Shayna Dahlen
(Villa Park High/Idaho State University)
launched a shot that snuck in just to the
right of the left field foul pole for a tworun home run. Dahlen had only 90 minutes
of sleep early Friday morning because of
her graduation night festivities Thursday
night, but managed to make it in time for
the game against the So Cal A’s.
“What a great response,” Medina said.
“Her responding, coming back with that
two-run home run, was kind of the way I
thought the game was going to go all the
way through. We kind of died a little bit,
but…she has the potential to do that all the
time.”
However, the Punishers would be limited to three hits the rest of the way, all

“You have to remember we had a young
squad coming in the last couple of years,”
Medina said. “But that young squad is all
seniors now. So, the coaching staff in us
kind of took our lumps years before. But
we had that squad. We have that championship squad. We just can’t get them here.
We didn’t realize that was going to be our
problem at this point.
“It’s been a frustrating month for us and
for the coaches too,” Medina later added.
“The coaching staff…what a great support.
They’ve been here every day working hard.
We’re really working hard on the younger
group also. I’m not going to make excuses
for this, but we have kids who are out and
we’re still not at full throttle. And it’s difficult that you’re missing that key hit.”
After going two and out in the Arizona
and So Cal Qualifiers, the Punishers will
hope to do much better this weekend in the
Las Vegas Qualifier, where four automatic
berths will be up for grabs.
“What I expect is that they all come out
[with] good camaraderie, good gelling, doing it for the team and doing it for everybody,” Medina said. “Play for each other,
play like it’s your last game. Have fun and
remember this moment for the rest of your
life.”

The Jets would score the game winner
in the sixth when, with two outs, Gonzales walked Johnson for the second time.
She would steal second and was moved
to third on a sacrifice from Hirsch. But an
overthrow in an attempt to get Hirsch out
allowed Johnson to come home. The play
proved to be costly because on the next
pitch, Miller grounded out.
“When she bunted, I thought we had
them handled,” Medina said. “When she
bunted, all of the coaches were yelling,
‘eat it, eat it, don’t throw it, don’t throw it’.
It was an off-centered throw and she was
safe already. There shouldn’t have been a
throw.”
Gonzales, who faced the Jets just six
days prior, pitched six solid innings, threw
82 pitches and allowed just three hits.
“We played them [last week] and she
pitched a couple of innings,” Medina said.
“She only had an hour and a half of sleep
coming in from grad night. I said if I pitch
her again, she’s going to be my ‘go-to’. Not
only that, it’s going to pep her up a little bit
so that she has the will to do it. She did a
fabulous job and we told the girls that they
had to score to give [Leah] support.”
The Punishers, as has been the case
since last month, haven’t had their full
squad together and had 15 players for the
game against the Jets and 11 players out of
the 23 that are on the Gold team as well
as the Red team, were in Hemet for both
games. In the first game, a dozen players
suited up and the Punishers were missing
six starters.

16-Under travel softball team already
knows it will be playing in the Triple
Crown Sports World Series in Park City,
Utah next month. After failing to qualify
for the Premier Girls Fastpitch National
Championship at the Northern California
Fresno Qualifier the weekend of June 1012, the team was hoping for better results
in the Southern California Qualifier last
weekend.
But the team fell into an offensive funk
last Friday afternoon and lost to the (San
Marcos) Southern California Breakers
5-1 at Bill Barber Park. The Punishers
were then eliminated by the (San Diego)
Epoch 5-4 the next morning.
“We started off really bad in Fresno
and finished off really well,” said
Punishers manager Armando Canizales.
“But we’re not healthy with our bats. We
need to get our bats going. I just think
it’s the maturity level right now. I think
at this age group, you’re either an athlete
or there’s too many things going on in
your personal life that you have to worry
about.”
In Fresno, the Punishers went
2-2 and scored seven runs in the two
victories, but were outscored 6-2 in the
two losses. Against the So Cal Breakers,
the Punishers found themselves down
2-0 after half an inning before striking
back in the bottom of the first. Center
fielder Amanda Canizales (Whittier
High) reached on a fielder’s choice,
moved to second on a base hit from third
baseman Savannah Flinn (Beaumont
High) and came home on a base hit from
first baseman Kylee Perryman (Millikan
High).
After that, the bats went relatively
silent. The Punishers would collect four
more hits the rest of the way and had a
total of five base runners over the final six
innings. The best chance to score came
in the fourth when right fielder DeAndria
Lockett (Hawthorne Math and Science
Academy) doubled to the centerfield
fence with one out and catcher Nikki
Aldecoa reached on an infield single
with two outs.

La Mirada’s Community Emergency
Response Team (CERT) welcomed its
newest members on June 18 following
their completion of a 20-hour training
program offered by the City of La
Mirada and the Los Angeles County Fire
Department (LACFD). The program
teaches residents basic disaster response
skills, such as fire safety, search and
rescue, team organization, and disaster
medical operations.
For the final class, participants put
their skills to the test through a search
and rescue simulation. Volunteers played
the part of injured victims in need
of medical treatment. CERT trainees
organized a search and rescue mission
FUN RUN
9:30am. The Gonsalves Grizzlies with
61 participants won the Golden Shoe
Award for having the largest school team
in attendance and LBS Financial Credit
Union won the Community Golden Shoe
Award for the biggest community team
involvement with 23 participants.
“This is an amazing community
building event for the ABC community,”
stated Fun Run Co-Chair Melinda Ortiz,
Principal at ABC’s Nixon Academy.
The Fun Run had over 400 5K
participants and over 300 participants
in the 2K and Fun Run. 5K Winners
and went through each room to locate
victims. Trainees also executed a triage
system where they prioritized the victims
based on their injuries and prepared them
for treatment and evacuation.
The LACFD offers free CERT
training courses throughout the year.
