INTRODUCTION
B
roadstairs has retained the serene charm
of a traditional seaside town yet it has a
wealth of activities throughout the year.
We hope that this brochure will introduce
you to the many and diverse activities and
events in and around Broadstairs – whether
you are a resident, passing through on
business or enjoying a warm welcome as a
leisure visitor.
Cultural opportunities encompassing art
and literature, archaeology and geography,
music and dance – are all here to be explored
and discovered in Broadstairs. Whether you
are a visitor discovering the town for the first
time or fortunate to be a resident, there is so
much to do whatever the month.
Enjoy our many festivals that take place
throughout the year. Music offerings included
Blues Bash (February) and Folk Week

and of course, Broadstairs Water Gala – the
town’s oldest event, with a full day of sea and
beach based activities.
The High Street, and surrounding roads, offer a
diverse range of independent shops: designer
frocks and jewellery; gifts and cards; ‘proper’
greengrocers, butchers, bakers and probably,
candle stick makers. Three micro-pubs, two
independent off-licences, art gallery and
studio and such a selection of cafes, bars and
restaurants – you could eat your way around
the world in eighty days in Broadstairs.
We hope that Discover Broadstairs proves
to be a valuable guide and an introduction
to the numerous organisations and clubs,
events and festivals that make Broadstairs
the interesting, vibrant town that it is today.

Village Tours
Bleak House
Kent Greeters are an enthusiastic
band of volunteers who are happy,
and able, to share knowledge,
highlights, hidden gems, myths
and legends of the towns they
represent – and the Broadstairs
band have plenty of information
to share. Greets typically last about
1 hour, are tailored to meet your
specific needs and interest, and are
for a maximum of six people.

Flagship, award-winning tours
around the village of St Peters,
meeting a variety of historical
costumed characters. Learn a little
of the long history of the much
loved St Peter’s Church, of the
Newbolts and the famous breakfast
parties, of the role the tower
played in the Napoleonic wars and
conditions in the workhouse. Tours
take around two and a half hours,
conducted in English only.
Tours are free but contributions are
invited (advised £4 per adult).

The former holiday residence
of the famous Victorian author,
Charles Dickens, Bleak House
was built in 1801, and was
originally used as the home
of the fort captain during the
Napoleonic wars. Visit the house
and Smuggling museum. Teas,

sandwiches are available in The
Great Expectations room.

Broadstairs Town Trail
The town trail is a self-guided walk
leading you around the town.
The trail’s illustrated boards and
guide give an insight into the
town’s history, its people and
buildings. Free leaflets are available
from the Visitor Information kiosks
and St Peters Town Council offices,
Pierremont Hall, off High Street.
Turner And Dickens Walk
Take a walk along the restored 4 mile
route between Turner’s Margate and
Dickens’ Broadstairs, following an
ancient footpath between St Peter’s
and St John’s churches. The walk is
signposted in both directions.
Start at Margate Harbour Arm
next to the Turner Contemporary
Gallery or on Broadstairs
promenade outside the Dickens
House Museum. Scenes from
Turner’s and Dickens’ works, lives
and times are displayed at three
points along the route. Celebrate
the connections Margate has with
artist JMW Turner, the famous
sunset paintings and Broadstairs
with writer Charles Dickens who
spent his holidays in the town.

New Kent Art Gallery
and Studio
Crampton Tower Museum
The Crampton Tower Museum is a
fascinating small museum, partly
housed in a flint tower adjacent
to the Broadstairs Railway Station.
Thomas Russel Crampton is perhaps
chiefly remembered as a designer of
locomotives and of railways, but he
was also concerned with gas, water
works and the submarine telegraph
cable. He was the first to succeed in
laying an effective telegraph cable
under the English Channel. The
Broadstairs Gallery, introduced in
2006, focuses on the development
of the town of Broadstairs, illustrated
through vintage postcards and
photographs. Children can ride the 5
inch gauge miniature railway on the
museum site – weather permitting.

New Kent Art Gallery is situated in
the very heart of Broadstairs, yards
from the seafront and harbour.
The brainchild of RA exhibitor Brian
Hodgson and Karen HiscockLawrence, they offer an intimate,
fine art and gallery space focussing
on local artists, both traditional and
contemporary – together with a
working studio and resident artists.

Dickens House Museum
Joss Bay Surf School
Dickens House Museum celebrates
Charles Dickens’ long connection
with Broadstairs (1837-1851,
housed in the cottage that was his
inspiration for the home of Betsey
Trotwood in David Copperfield.
Visitors will see items that belonged
to Charles Dickens, including letters
written about Broadstairs, his writing
box and mahogany sideboard
alongside a fine collection of prints
by JH.K.Browne (Phiz) – one of
Dickens’ principal illustrators.

People have been riding waves at
Joss Bay for over 40 years and it is
by far the most popular surf spot
in South East England. Established
in 1998, the Joss Bay team have
given thousands of lessons to both
young and old, abled and disabled,
