There are more Make & Take sessions than ever before with some lovely projects to create. The seminar program is jam-packed and the retailers have stacks of new products to reveal. Plus, there are some amazing new machines to check out – for quilting and embroidery, including one that really replicates a hand-stitch and an overlocker that threads itself. Now that’s impressive! The Quilt Show has so many magnificent works – some that’ll make you smile or perhaps make you think, and others will possibly have you gasping in admiration. Those talented Canberra residents – the tACTile group – are showing their next exhibition for the first time at AQC and the theme, Elements, has never been more relevant in this region of the world. See how they have interpreted earth, fire, water and air into amazing textile artworks. We also get to discover what comes to mind when quilters think about the Seven Deadly Sins. And Ruth de Vos from Western Australia will bring a display of some of her superb pictorial quilts. In fact, there is so much to see that you may find that one day at AQC is simply not enough… See you there, Right: Abu Bellas by Jenny Bowker CONTENTS 4 Getting There 5 Lucky Door Prizes 6 Quilt Show 10 Hot Happenings 11 Shopping at AQC 17 Special Events 19 Convention Classes 20 Seminars 22 Sewing Rooms 24 Make & Take 27 Exhibitor List 29 Shopping Vouchers Cover quilts from left: Seven Deadly Ribbons by Sandy Corry; In Spring by Kelly Wulfsohn; Kazuko Harmony by Maree Blanchard, Kerry Brack, Lorena Uriate & Loloma Wren; Repro Meets Retro by Kaye Hoffman. getting there The Australasian Quilt Convention is held in one of Australia’s most historic edifices. The Royal Exhibition Building is conveniently located just north of the CBD and next door to the Melbourne Museum in Carlton Gardens. In a nutshell – ‘state-of-the-art’… AP&Q AQC Challenge This year’s intriguing theme of the Seven Deadly Sins was guaranteed to provide participants with ample inspiration and consequently, their entries were eagerly anticipated. The winners of the Challenge will be announced at the Cocktail Party on Wednesday, April 13. Above: The Devil Made Me Do It by Cindy Watkins and Lucinda Hannam. Right: Vanity by Raelene Kwong. 6 www.aqc.com.au Best of the Best Quilt guilds around the country have wonderful shows each year, with many fabulous examples of the art on display, and here’s a chance to see a selection of the very finest from the far corners of the region. It includes the Best of Show from each Australian State guild, which will be judged for the National Quilt Award at AQC, and the winner will be announced at the Gala Dinner. The Australian National Quilt Award is sponsored by: Rajah Winner 2010 – Barbara Macey Winner of the Rajah award in 2010, Barbara Macey is one of Australia’s leading textile artists with a career spanning four decades. She is known particularly for bold geometric designs, but also for her tireless efforts as founder of Ozquilt Network Inc – and as the driving force behind the group’s website and newsletter. As well as a quilter, however, Barbara is an author, historian, judge and photographer – all ‘of note’ – but, most importantly, she is a mentor. The Rajah Award is presented by: Teach Me This year, our tutors hail from around Australia, New Zealand, the UK and the USA. This affords a great opportunity to view pieces from leading quilters whose work you may not have seen before, as well as some new ones by your favourite locals. From top: Galaxy by Shirley Gillam, entry in Best of Australia. Enchanted Journey by Kay Haerland, Teach Me Exhibition. April 14 – 17, 2011 7 AQC QUILT SHOW continued ... Quilts by Ruth de Vos Ruth de Vos is an art quilter from Western Australia who has won many awards at the QuiltWest show since 2005, and had quilts included in many other exhibitions. Ruth’s pieces are also held in private collections, as well as in the WA Museum (history collection). Australian flora has featured extensively in her work and this is the theme she is best known for, but recently, her attention has focused more on the realm of childhood, as her children provide endless inspiration. 1000 Quilts for Peace Throughout 2009 and 2010 at Craft & Quilt Fairs across the country, the 1000 Quilts for Peace project has been evolving quietly. It aims to create quilts for victims of domestic violence and the theme relates to the Japanese story of Sadako. A selection of the quilts made will be displayed. Elements The name, tACTile, refers to a group of Canberra-based quiltmakers who challenge themselves by working towards exhibiting together every two years. Their latest exhibition is entitled Elements, and Jenny Bowker, Dianne Firth, Helen Gray, Beth Miller and Trevor and Beth Reid planned it during a time of extreme weather conditions all over Australia. In recent times, the theme has been even more relevant – with our country battling major floods and cyclones in some areas and extensive bushfires in others. The groups decided to work with this volatile inspiration individually, and also to look at one or more of the elements, earth, air, fire and water. The Thread Studio’s Pocket Challenge Above: The Fire by Beth Miller, Elements. Left: Glimpses by Ruth de Vos The AQC Quilt Show is special because it honours both quiltmakers and the works of art they produce. Come and be inspired… 8 www.aqc.com.au Lucy Locket lost her pocket, Kitty Fisher found it ... come and see loads of very creative ‘pockets’ in this display. Before someone had the clever idea of stitching them into garments, pockets used to be separate items of clothing. Anyway, they make a nice small project on which to experiment with some textile-art techniques. Presented by Australia Wide Two Ozquilt Network Incorporated was founded in 1998 as a group of quiltmakers scattered Australiawide and interested in promoting contemporary quilts as art. Through its newsletter, website and exhibitions, the group members aim to raise awareness about contemporary art-quiltmaking. The quilts in Ozquilt Network Inc’s Australia Wide Two Exhibition range from the more traditionally based to edgy, free interpretations. Contributors include Sue Dennis, Judy Hooworth, Susan Mathews, Carolyn Sullivan and other well known quiltmakers. Going Green From the UK come the British entries in the Transatlantic Quilt Challenge, which had the theme, Going Green. They feature a diverse range of interpretations of the subject – and techniques, too – proving that it is much more than just a colour. See it only at AQC. Queensland Quilters Challenge 2011 Taking their inspiration from one particular fabric, the Queensland Quilters have produced many and varied quilts with that fabric included. One Step Further This exhibition from Victorian Quilters comprises contemporary art quilts in an open, juried exhibition. At AQC this year, we enjoy a selection of the entries.
