Delta Girl Scouts Miss Millard Outstanding Teen
We are having so much fun in Girl
Scouts. The troops are planning a 2013-14, Maddie DeLoach
Halloween party for next month. All
girls ages 5-18 and in grades K-12
are welcome to come join us. We
meet every Thursday from 4-5 p.m.
at the Palomar.

Elder Kegan Carter returned home
on September 25, 2013 after faithfully serving two years as a missionary in the Argentina Mendoza Mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of
Latter-day Saints.
He will be reporting on September
29th at 9:00 a.m. in the Fillmore 4th
ward located at 330 East 500 South in
Fillmore.
Kegan is the son of Rick and Patty
Carter.

has had excellent response to the classes that they have been offering at the
Family History Center. We are adding
some new classes so mark your calendars to attend any or all of the classes.
The classes that are scheduled are:

history center. As of September 2012,
the company provided access to approximately 11 billion records, 40 million family trees, and 2 million paying
subscribers. The majority of records
are from the United States, though records are being added for other countries, such as Canada, the UK, and
European countries. Some records are
free for anyone to access, but the majority are accessible only by paid subscription and at family history centers.
For those attending the Adding Photos to Familysearch class it would help
if you could bring several digital photos you would like added to your Family Tree. If you don't have digital photos we could scan some for you and put
on your thumb drive. If possible please
bring the pictures to be scanned a few
days before the class so that they will
be ready for you to use.

Dear Aunt Nell:
I was perusing the old, really old,
Millard County Progress the other
day and came upon a tidbit from
the Oak City News column appearing January 13, 1905. It appears that
Able Roper and John Nelson had a
little challenge concerning an over
population of rabbits. The "captains"
chose 20 people to be on each team
"to fight the nimble bunnies". The
loser had to provide a dance and
dinner for the winners. The Nielson
(Nelson-spelled both ways) team
came out victorious by nine rabbits. Roper immediately challenged
another hunt set for Saturday which
the Roper team came out on top. After all was said and done... "taking
a conservative estimate they figure it
would leave about 16,000 less rabbits to feed this year". Whoa — that's
a lot of rabbits and a lot of bullets.
Do you think they might have meant
1,600? It's hard to imagine that many
bunnies running around this valley a
century ago.
If you would like to peruse some
old Chronicle and Progress newspapers do a search on Google for Utah
Digital Newspapers. Select the newspaper you want to view (dropdown
box) and it will take you to a page
where you can put in the year, month
and day to search or a name of a person or place. You could spend hours
on this sight so be prepared.
Would you by chance have any information about a fire at Cove Fort in
1902? Will you check and see if you
do and let me know?
Don't forget! ! ! ! --- Pioneers in
Your Attic on September 25 at the library from 3:00 until 8:00 p.m. Bring
journals, diaries, histories, artifacts,
anything that you have between 1842
-1890 (notice the extended span of
years) approximately to get scanned
for free. The information will be put
on the Internet for access to everyone.
Also the scanners will be on hand to
put your information, for free, on a
CD for you to have and to hold! It
can't get any better than that.
The Chronicle keeps walking off.
It's delivered on Wednesday and by
Friday it's missing. It might have to
become one of those things that are
under the counter and patrons have to
ask and sign for. At least then it will
be available to one and all.
Read the cutest books at story hour
last week — Edwina the Dinosaur
Who Didn't Know She Was Extinct,
Sylvie (very cute flamingo) and What
if You Had Animal Teeth. Did you
know that elephants are known to
favor one tusk over another? So just
like a person, right-handed or lefthanded, an elephant is either right
tusked or left tusked. The narwhal
has two upper teeth with one protruding through its front lip. The tooth on
the right is very, very small while the
tooth on the left grows up to 10 feet
long. Scientists are still contemplating what this very large tooth/tusk is
used for.
I hope you have cleared your calendar for October 3 so you can be at
the library at 7:00 p.m. to listen to a
presentation by author, Josh Hanagame. He has written a book, The
Strongest Librarian in the World, he
works at the Salt Lake City Library
and has a severe case of Tourette's.
I have read his book and heard him
give a talk at a library conference this
summer. It was a great presentation
and we are excited that he's coming
to Delta! This program is sponsored
by The Utah Humanities Council in
conjunction with their annual Book
Festival.
Read Karen White's latest, The
Time Between, over the weekend and
it was good. I was not sure I wanted
to read it but started and just had to
keep going. I downloaded The Four
Corners of the Sky by Michael Malone from Overdrive and have enjoyed
reading it on my device. I had never
read this author before but think I
would read another of his creations.
It's kind of odd that I picked these
books at random and they both deal
with long lost stolen items, famous
paintings and a gold statue.
Keep those pages turning!

For the past two months since being crowned Miss Millard Outstanding Teen 2013-14, Maddie DeLoach
has been preparing to represent Millard County at the Miss Utah Outstanding Teen Pageant.
She has been working hard on her
platform, B.R.A.V.E. and is scheduled to appear on the local ABC 4
television talk show, Good Things
Utah, on Friday, September 27, 2013
at 9:00 a.m. to give a presentation to
further her cause. She would like to
invite everyone to watch.
The Miss Millard County Pageant board is also throwing Maddie
a "Send-off Celebration", which is
scheduled for Monday, September
30, 2013 at 7:00 p.m. at the Millard
County Fair Building in Delta, Utah.
She will present her talent, talk about
her platform and model her pageant
wardrobe.
The Delta High School cheerleaders will also provide some entertainment.
