PROGRESS CHECKS We believe in the importance of our school and parents/guardians working together to help ensure student success. We know that communication is an important part of this relationship and of a student’s success. The block schedule moves very quickly so students cannot afford to get behind. We need your help in ensuring students stay on track. As a parent you will receive communication about your child’s grades every 3 weeks. Progress Reports and Final Grades may be viewed via the Millard Public Schools App or on the Parent Portal. An email will be sent out when grades are posted. End of First Semester First semester ends on Tuesday, October 13. Second semester will begin on Monday, October 19. Students who need a 2nd semester schedule may print one via the student portal. Students should check their schedules each semester to make sure nothing has changed. Please note: There is no school for students October 14, 15, and 16. Save $10 and ORDER NOW!!! 2 Parents of SENIORS—College Planning Night College planning night will be held on September 10th at 6:00pm in the Millard West Auditorium. This presentation is designed for parents of 12th grade students who need more information about the college application process. A representative from Education Quest Foundation will also present information about the financial aid process. College Planning Sessions for Senior Students Seniors are encouraged to attend any of the following College Planning Sessions. These sessions are full of information to guide your student through the steps of applying to colleges as well as acquiring letters of recommendation. September 9th – Public and Private Universities/ Colleges Location: Auditorium Time: During QT & beginning of 2nd block In this session, the information will include a college planning timeline. We will discuss researching colleges and universities, how the application process works and scholarships/ financial aid. Time will also be spent discussing application deadlines and recommendation requests. This session is full of information for any student planning on attending a 4 year college. Examples: UNO, UNL, KU, NW Missouri State, Doane, Wayne State, Iowa State, Rockhurst, etc. September 10th – Community College (including those intending to transfer to a 4-year college) and Certificate Programs Location: Lecture Hall Time: During QT & beginning of 2nd block In this session information will be provided to aid students in exploring possible career fields that are in demand and finding the college that best fits their program interest. We will discuss application timelines, Asset testing and the importance of the campus visit. Time will also be spent discussing application requirements, scholarships/financial aid and transfer to a 4 year college. Examples: Metro CC, Iowa Western CC, Southeast CC, Clarkson College, Bryan LGH College of Health Sciences ASVAB TEST October 27th @ Millard South High School 8:00am – 11:00 Millard South Lecture Hall The ASVAB Test is available to any Millard Public Schools junior and senior student. This test is not just for military bound students, but any student wishing to assess their skills and learn about careers through the ASVAB Career Exploration Guide. Registration for the ASVAB test will begin October 1 st in the Millard West Guidance office. 3 BECOME A TEAMMATES MENTOR PEER TUTORING There will be peer tutoring in the Counseling Office beginning Wednesday, September 9th at 3:15. We will have tutors for Spanish I, II, and III, as well as Biology and World Geography, and Algebra I, Geometry, and Algebra II. If you are interested in being a tutor, and are available most Wednesdays after school from 3:15 - 4:15, please stop by Ms. Martindale or Mrs. Zohlen’s office to sign up. The TeamMates Mentoring Program of MilCOLLEGE AND CAREER READINESS GROUP lard is presently in 29 schools. It never ceases to amaze the staff that so many of our kids just love to read! Technology plays a huge part in education today. Every Fall we encourage students to invest in a personal flash drive. Most of us have learned the hard way that we really do need to save twice. Library Hours Monday-Thursday: 7:30 a.m. -5:00 p.m. Friday: 7:30 a.m. -3:45 p.m. TESTING CENTER This center is for students who have missed a test or other homework and need to make it up. The student needs to make arrangements with the teacher prior to report to the Testing Center to make up the work. MYSCHOOLBUCKS SCHOOL STORE Millard Public School District now offers MySchoolBucks School Store. This convenient online payment service provides a quick and easy way to pay for school-related purchases. You can now pay for items such as activity fees, school lunches and more using your credit/debit card or electronic check. Visit myschoolbucks.com to create your account. If you were using MyLunchMoney.com to pay for student meals, your account has now been rolled over to MySchoolBucks.com automatically. Use the same login and password as you used for MyLunchMoney.com to access your new MySchoolBucks.com account. SCHOOL LUNCH ACCOUNTS Students putting money on accounts after school starts can do so from 6:30-10:00 a.m. daily. No money can be put on accounts during lunch periods. Due to high enrollment, the need for volunteer interviewers is high. The 2015-2016 dates are: Thursday, Sept. 17th, Thursday, November 12th, Wednesday, February 10th and Thursday, April 28th. STUDENT PARKING This is a reminder that Millard West offers campus parking for a yearly fee of $35. Click here to be directed to a parking registration form. For the $35 fee, students are issued a parking decal and can park in student parking areas on campus. The student must provide a parking registration form signed by a parent and the student. Only the vehicle with a valid parking decal can use student parking areas. Students with a valid parking decal are free to drive another vehicle to school, but this vehicle must be registered in the attendance office on a daily basis. Students can purchase a second decal for $5. Purchasing a parking decal does not guarantee a parking space in the school parking lot. Money generated by the sale of parking decals is used to provide an outside security person to maintain the safety of student and staff vehicles. Millard West has a very low rate of damage or theft in student parking areas and the outside security plays a large role in this. 8 ATTENDANCE OFFICE INFORMATION CLIP AND SAVE Attendance 402-715-6010 (Use this number to report absences, call students in late, appointments, or phone messages) Guidance & Pupil Services 402-715-6015 Activities 402-715-6025 Millard West Main Number 402-715-6000 DAILY ATTENDANCE & TARDIES Parents and students are reminded that classes begin at 8:45 a.m. each Monday morning and at 8:00 a.m. Tuesday through Friday during the year. Students are recommended to follow a morning routine that allows them to arrive at school at least 15 minutes before class begins. This arrival time allows adequate time to socialize, organize school materials, and report to class a few minutes early. On a daily basis, many of our late students enter the building from 1 to 10 minutes late. Students leaving the house 15 to 20 minutes earlier can easily eliminate this problem. Students send a positive message to their teachers and don’t miss valuable learning time when present in class on time each day. Thank you to those students who are on time for class every day. This is one of those seemingly little things in life that can make a big difference. REPORTING ABSENCES If a student is absent from school, a parent/guardian should call the Attendance Office at 402-715-6010 or 402-715-6011 the same day to report the absence. Parents/guardians are expected to call each day the student is absent from school unless other arrangements have been made with the Attendance Office. A phone call will be adequate notice of the student’s absence from school. Handwritten notes will not be accepted by the Attendance Office to report an absence. A SPECIAL NOTE FROM THE ATTENDANCE OFFICE Being responsible for tracking the attendance of over 2400 students daily is a huge job. As a result, the Millard West Attendance Office is an extremely busy place between the hours of 7:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. The attendance secretaries have a wide variety of responsibilities during the school day and each works very hard to serve the Millard West community. Incoming phone calls to the Attendance Office are numerous during the school day. We fully understand the need for parents to contact the Attendance Office to communicate about students needing to leave school for medical appointments, family emergencies, or other appointments. Coordinating these phone calls and providing necessary passes to students consumes an extensive amount of staff time. Please reserve your phone calls to necessary appointments and other Attendance Office business. Much too frequently our phone lines and staff time are tied up with calls requesting students to be dismissed to leave campus for lunch or to be dismissed from attendance at study hall. Millard School Board Policy states that students in grades 9 through 11 are expected to be in school all day. This group of students does not have open campus privileges and can’t be dismissed for lunch or study hall. We are asking you as parents not to make these type of calls. They consume valuable time of our Attendance Office staff. Thank you for your help with this matter. Your students will be seniors before you know it and will have earned the privilege of open campus. 9 TARDY RULES A student will be assigned to Tuesday/Thursday school when late to a class or Quality Time 6 times. Additional tardiness will result in disciplinary action including but not limited to Tuesday/Thursday School, suspension, removal from class with a grade of 5. Students arriving more than 20 minutes late for class will be recorded as excessively tardy (ET) and subject to disciplinary action. CELL PHONES/PERSONAL TECHNOLOGY DEVICES Student use of cell phones/personal technology devices is permitted during passing periods and in the cafeteria during lunch. Students will not be permitted to use cell phones/ technology devices in school classrooms for non-educational purposes (texting, taking pictures, accessing Facebook, playing games, etc.). A classroom teacher may permit use of cell phones/devices during class/quality time for instructional purposes only. Any student use of a cell phone/technology device which disrupts a classroom can be cause for teacher confiscation of the item. The confiscated phone/device may be either returned by the teacher or given to a school administrator at the end of the class period. Failure to give the phone/device to any staff member upon request will be considered insubordination resulting in disciplinary action. Multiple infractions of classroom disruption involving a cell phone/device will result in escalated consequences. STUDENT HANDBOOK During the first week of the new school year all students will be issued a copy of the 2015-2016 Millard West Student Handbook. The handbook includes information specific to Millard West along with the Millard Public Schools Standards for Student Conduct. The Standards for Student Conduct apply to all Millard Public School students. Parents are urged to review the student handbook with students. It is important for both parents and students to know the contents of the Code of Conduct. Please take the time to read through and discuss this document with your student(s). DRESS CODE It is important for students and parents to be aware of Millard West dress restrictions. Tanktops (without t-shirt underneath), halter tops, spaghetti strap tops, mesh clothing, and other such revealing clothing is not acceptable for school. As a simple reference, shirts or blouses worn to school must completely cover the back and stomach of the student. Any garment should also have sleeves completely covering both shoulders. Excessively short skirts and shorts are not permitted to be worn in the school building. T-shirt manufacturers continue to develop clothing inappropriate for the school setting. Noted below are examples of T-shirt messages, statements, illustrations, etc., not acceptable to be worn at Millard West. Vulgar or offensive messages. Sexually explicit or sexual innuendo (inferences). Demeaning or derogatory statements related to individuals or groups of persons (racial, ethnic, sexual orientation, etc). Promotion of drugs, tobacco, alcohol. Promotion of violence, weapons, aggression, etc. We know that parents and students will demonstrate good judgment while shopping for school clothes. The Millard West student body is expected to enter the school building each day “dressed to learn”. Please expect students to be confronted by a staff member if their dress is judged to be inappropriate. Millard West is a place of learning and appropriate school dress does make a positive difference. 10 HEALTH OCCUPATIONS STUDENTS OF AMERICA NEWS HOSA is a national organization dedicated to the provision of unique opportunities and experiences for students interested in the health and medical fields. It is based primarily out of Human Physiology and Athletic Training/Sports Injury courses. HOSA students at Millard West may participate in our three blood drives, various community service events, and attend local, state and national leadership conferences/competitions. American Red Cross/HOSA Blood Drives The ARC and the Health Occupations Students of America will be sponsoring three blood drives this year. The fall blood drive will be on Friday, October 23 from 8:00 – 2:00. The Midwest Region needs to collect about 2100 units/week to meet area and national requirements. To help meet this need, the Red Cross has had great success in recruiting high school students and encouraging them to be lifelong donors. In order to donate blood you must: Be 17 years old (16 with completed parental permission form) Be in good general health Pass the comprehensive health/history screening Weigh 110 pounds. If female there is a sliding scale according to height 5’6/110; 5’5/115; 5’4/120lbs, etc. We encourage all eligible students to donate blood. Our goal is to collect over 350 usable units/year. Please talk to your son/daughter about giving blood. If, for any reason, you would prefer your child to not give blood, please make that known to them so they do not register. The Sociedad Honoraria Hispánica will be hosting a Hispanic Festival on October 2nd in the Millard West Commons from 6 to 9 pm. Please joins us for some Hispanic music and art! We need your help! La Sociedad is looking for singers, musicians, poets, and artists who would like to volunteer their talents at the Hispanic Festival. We are also looking for parents who would like to donate consumables, small plates, spoons, cups and napkins. If you are interested in helping the Sociedad, please contact Sra. The app is available on the Apple and Google Play Search: Together A Greater ore Learn more at www.TogetherAGreaterGood.com 12 UNO Dual Enrollment General Information and Enrollment Process Information Millard West High School 2015-2016 Students taking specified Advanced Placement Courses are given the opportunity to dual enroll for college credit while also receiving high school credit. Currently Millard Public Schools is working with the University of Nebraska at Omaha for these opportunities. UNO determines which of Millard’s courses align with their college curriculum and which of Millard’s teachers qualify as adjunct professors. Only those courses and teachers approved by UNO offer the option of dual enrollment credit. Students must have a cumulative GPA of a 3.0 or greater in order to qualify for dual enrollment credit. Students must also sign up for dual enrollment credit concurrently with enrollment in the corresponding Millard course. Students will not be allowed to retroactively pay for dual enrollment credit. Enrollment requirements are set by the University and may be changed by them prior to any registration period. Students will earn credit from UNO and will need to have a transcript from UNO sent to the university they plan on attending. As with all transfer credit, the attending universities decide if and how they accept the transfer credit from UNO. It is recommended that students call the attending college and ask about the acceptance of the specific transfer credit before enrolling in the dual enrollment course. If a student is enrolling in a science or math program, the attending university will generally not accept dual enrollment credit in science and math. Most dual enrollment credits will transfer as general required courses rather than as major-specific course work. Students should call the admissions’ office at the university they are planning on attending to check for specific information on transfer credit acceptance. All Advanced Placement Courses offer Advanced Placement Testing through the College Board each spring. All students enrolled in AP courses are expected to take the corresponding AP exams. Students may qualify for college credit depending on the grade they earn on the exam(s) and the university they are attending. UNO’s Enrollment Process A UNO representative will visit the dual enrollment courses two weeks prior to the registration deadline. Students are then to turn in their registrations to Dr. Allen or her secretary in the Millard West Attendance Office within the two week window. The cost for each semester course is $250. The cost is the same whether it is for a three-credit, four-credit, or five-credit class. Millard West will send the registrations to UNO. Each parent/student will receive a bill from the University and will pay UNO directly. No money should be given to Millard West. The $250 fee is a significant reduction in the normal tuition for a UNO class. UNO dual-enrolled students are required to take the AP test in May; however, UNO will pay for the AP exam costs (a $92 cost per exam) in the dual-enrolled subject. By turning in the enrollment forms, the parent/student is agreeing to a financial obligation and agreement with UNO. All of UNO’s policies apply. Students must pass the dual enrollment course with a grade of C or better to earn college credit. The grading scale will be the same as for all Millard classes. Grade weighting for Advanced Placement classes is for Millard’s GPA purposes only and does not apply to the UNO grade report. Students are not assigned to a particular counselor, but are referred to specific counselors based on need. Millard West’s New Counselor Carmen Hippen is the newest addition to the Millard West Counseling Team. Mrs. Hippen is originally from Albert Lea, Minnesota. She earned a bachelor’s degree in History and Social Studies from the University of St. Thomas. Mrs. Hippen has taught in Minnesota, Indiana and Nebraska. She holds a master’s degree in Counseling from Creighton University and for the past nine years has been a counselor at Millard North. She is married and has two daughters: the oldest graduated from Notre Dame with a degree in Mechanical Engineering and is working as a design engineer for Ford Motor in Detroit; the younger is a sophomore at Kenyon College in Ohio and is planning to major in English and Anthropology. Mrs. Hippen is excited to join the West counseling staff where she can concentrate on assisting students in families in post-secondary planning. College and Career Readiness Tip A student’s first attempt at an AP class often comes with new challenges for a learner. Students must be patient with themselves as they acquire higher level thinking skills and begin to challenge themselves to synthesize and apply material learned in class. Remember that these classes are college level classes and may require a different approach than what might have worked in other classes. Encourage your student to visit with his or her teacher if the challenge of an AP class is becoming overwhelming. Most often the answer is not to drop the class but to learn a new way of approaching true mastery of the content. 15 Naviance Accounts Besides housing the Personal Leaning Plan, your student’s Naviance account lets counselors share information with you and your child about up-coming meetings and events, part-time and volunteer work, local scholarship and financial aid opportunities, and other web resources for college and career information. It also includes a link to your student’s free PrepMe account which houses ACT practice tests and questions. Parents of Millard West students may set up their own Naviance accounts by emailing Mrs. Cary ([email protected]) in the Guidance Office for log-in information. Explorer Posts Explorer Posts are again initiating their fall kick-off meeting dates and times. Local community organizations initiate an Explorer post by matching their people and program resources to the interests of young people in the community. The result is a program of activities that helps youth pursue their special interests, grow, and develop. Most programs include hand-on activities, speakers and tours. The ultimate goal is for all local 14-20 year olds to decide whether a particular career is the right choice. Explorer Posts can specialize in a variety of career skills such as engineering, law enforcement, computer technology, pharmacy and other health sciences. Exploring programs are based on five areas of emphasis: career opportunities, life skills, citizenship, character education, and leadership experience. This is a national test date, and the only administration at Millard West this year. The Preliminary SAT or practice SAT is a standardized exam which measures critical reading skills, math problem-solving skills, and writing skills. For juniors the PSAT also serves as the National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT). The scholarship competition is cosponsored by the College Board and National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC). The PSAT is open to all students grades 9-12. A bulletin board will have more information outside Room 314. 19 Dear Fellow Millard West High Parents, Throughout the year our principal receives funding requests from teachers to support student generated ideas and materials that would enhance their ability to provide our children the best education and experience possible. These requests are not funded by the Millard Public School System and frequently the idea is lost or the teacher funds it on their own. In 2009, this idea was inspired by an initiative that became reality through Mr. Kip Colony, who hosted a holocaust survivor, Ms. Livia Bitton Jackson, an author of a book he used in his class. The idea was a student’s, but without his courage and support, it would not have become a reality. Her visit touched every aspect of not only MWHS, but the local community as well, and was the impetus for this request. It was the realization that there is no money available for Dr. Tiemann to draw upon and the desire to reward our teachers and staff with a supporting discretionary fund, therefore the start of Generating Innovation for Teachers and Students (GIFTS) alias the Principal’s Fund five years ago. Last year, donations totaled $1,080. Dr. Tiemann used the money to fund purchases of an aquarium for a science classroom and cookies for the Outstanding Student Awards Presentations. With budget cuts these gifts have really been helpful to allow students to participate in many outside activities such as transportation on career day to: Briar Cliff College, Metro Community College South Omaha Campus, Chalco, and Habitat for Humanity. Our donations also provided transportation for a science class to travel to Chalco Hills for field experiments and orchestra students to visit Holland Center for a mentoring program. I am asking that you consider a donation to the GIFTS fund. During the back to school registration process you may opt to donate to the GIFTS fund online via My School Bucks or make a check payable to Millard West High School and drop it off at the GIFTS table during registration. The donation is tax deductible and receipts will be available. A $10 donation would be great but no amount is too small or too large. The screening is conducted to help identify health concerns in as early a stage as possible. Health screenings are not intended to be diagnostic, but to identify students with potential problems. Please see the attached Health and Human Services document identifying which screenings are given at each grade level. The new state statute requiring health inspections in Nebraska does not allow a waiver option. Parents who request that their child not be screened at school must provide a completed Affidavit of Parent/Guardian Refusal of School Health Screenings form from a medical provider. The screening results provided to the school are to be dated no earlier than May 1st of the current calendar year and must be provided to the school health office by December 1st. No exceptions. • Check with your photographer to ensure they are submitting the photo to the school (don’t just assume they are). • If NO senior photo is submitted, we will use the photo taken during registration (if taken) or the student’s junior photo to increase coverage of all seniors in the yearbook. • If you aren’t planning on having your senior pictures taken, Jack Martin Photography can take your senior yearbook photo during registration (just dress nicely). • Ultimately, it is the responsibility of the students and parents, not the yearbook staff, to ensure a senior photo is correctly submitted before the deadline.
