I certainly hope that Santa was good to you and your families. I certainly would like to hear what Santa gave to Violet and Hailey and Kaiden. What a year we had in 2006, our webpage and more prominently our forum expanded faster and bigger than we ever expected. Thank you to everyone who had the patience and the skills to stick with us through some of the challenges. For me, I think that 2007 will be a year where I focus back on the “fun” part of the hobby. I feel that at times we get wrapped up into thinking this hobby and, more specifically, this club is a business. Sure, we have financials and we need to be responsible but isn’t the real reason that we are here is because we enjoy the company of others with the same interests? I want to focus more on my aquariums and less on finding new avenues for fundraising, waivers and polls. I have five more months in the Presidents chair before somebody new will be taking over the reigns. I trust that our next President shares the view that this is a hobby and it should be fun. I guess if that is a New Years Resolution, it should be an easy one to keep. Thank you to Phil for chairing the December business meeting at M oby Joe’s home. Joe has a very nice home and some wonderful aquariums and I am sorry that I missed it. In January, we will be hosted by the Charliebear family and in February at the home of the Pyro’s (that’s me). If you would be interested in hosting a business meeting, we would love to meet at your home. It is a great way to see other fish rooms and meet the tolerant spouses of those of us suffering with MTS. Let one of us know if you are interested. Weat her pending, Larry Johnston will be with us to tell us about his collecting trip to M alawi. Larry was there last in October of 2006 and has some great pictures and stories to tell us. In February we have a National Geographic DVD called Jewel of the Rift. It is a presentation on Lake Tanganyika with some amazing footage. We will have the ability to flip these two programs in case of bad weather. In M arch, we are looking at a program on Native Fish. Please send me your suggestions on what you would like to see at our meetings. There are a lot of topics, programs and speakers out there and we don’t mind looking at any and all topics. My email has officially arrived from M iecia so I have to finish up my page! Remember that M emberships are due in January so see M iecia at the meeting. Also a new season of Show Jar begins! January features Dwarf Cichlids and Rainbowfish. I imagine that the dwarf cichlid class should be hotly contested and offer a great start to the showing season. Of course feel free to bring any fish to the meeting because we also offer an “Any Other Variety” class. Cheers. Al. M any folks here know the English greeting ‘hello’ and that makes us about even in terms of knowing the other’s language. As you may recall, at the October KWAS meeting the planned behind-the-scenes tour of the aquaria at the Toronto Zoo was postponed and I promised to take you with me on an alternate tour. Today we visit the Blue Zoo Aquarium in Beijing and yes we are going behind the scenes here. This facility was a little hard to find as the local tour maps, the tour assistant in our hotel and fellow travelers alike had never heard of it. It was listed in our Lonely Planet Guidebook but only as a footnote for a rainy day activity. We thought all of that odd as on our arrival it was jammed with busloads of Chinese tourists and they get some 750,000 visitors here annually. The immediate and most interesting feature of the facility is not only that it is underground, but that it was built into a bunker under a lake. Yes, the entire complex is underneath a freshwater lake featured in a city park here in Beijing China. 6 The aquarium is only 10 years old and features a number of fresh water displays however its main attraction is an enormous 4.5 million liter marine environment with a clear acrylic tunnel that meanders some 120 meters along the floor of the tank and is reputed to be the longest in Asia. The tunnel walls were but 55mm thick and sufficiently well lit from above the waterline that it made photography a snap. TMA visited Epcot Centre at Walt Disney World in Florida several years ago, and the water depth there made decent photography impossible as the ‘windows’ to the undersea world were too thick and the water depth too great for their lighting to penetrate. Interestingly here in Beijing, they have a moving sidewalk along one half of the tunnel floor to keep folks moseying along and they haven’t corrupted the underwater experience with fantasy hokum, well almost not and more about that later. We were greeted by Ms Qiao, our interpreter and by Ms Zheng, the supervising curator who guided us back-stage through the quarantine department, the pumping and filtering complex and to the catwalk overhead of the tourist area. Kitchener-Waterloo Aquarium Society (Continued on page 7) fins & tales January 2007 (Continued from page 6) Our interpreter is the secretary to the general manager and had never visited these off-limits areas before so we felt quite privileged. All of the components typical to saltwater aquaristic keeping were in place: ozone injectors, protein skimming foam fractitioners, ultra-violet light filters, spray bars and of course high intensity lighting and ample water movement. The size and scale of these were another matter of course as each component dwarfed me as I walked by. What was also immediately evident was that the aquarium wasn’t planned for staff being my height. TM A was head and shoulders too tall for the tour above and behind the scenes but I persevered on behalf of this loyal readership. Feel free to duck as you follow me. The quarantine department had of course a separate water system with all of the same filtration bits and pieces where a tank full of M oorish idols and another of New Guinea Rainbows, both new arrivals, cavorted to my amusement. Clearly neither was destined for the main display. The grow-out area for larger specimens consisted of cement bunkers that also served as the overflow reservoirs to the main system. Here foot-long marine Angelfish and Eagle Rays about one foot across and two feet in length were biding their time because they might still be considered bite-size for that main tank. To add to the usual array of backstage machinery was an air recharge system for Scuba tanks. As many of the species stake out territories, like moray eels for example, a diver takes the food to them several times daily, all of course to the amazement of young and old alike amid the tube-bound audience. The literature credited the tube to be tested to 40 meters of pressure, but to my eye this tank is between 3 to 3.5 meters in depth. The acrylic tunnel floor was built about a meter below the tank bottom so the ‘seabed’ was about hip height which is where the acrylic dome started. This made it roomy enough inside to either let the moving sidewalk propel you along, or to let you sidestep off anywhere to take advantage of that monster fish swimming by that was posing for your camera. TM A went around the loop three times in a row; it was great! The tough parts in any (Continued on page 8) Kitchener-Waterloo Aquarium Society 7 January 2007 fins & tales such display are no different than the challenges that face hobbyists the world over: water quality, along with food and species compatibility. The main display houses 1600 fish comprising some 116 species and is managed by a curatorial staff of 17 people. The Blue Zoo Aquarium seemingly has these variables figured out as we saw no battered, sick or declining fishes and judging by the deportment displayed all were at ease in their artificial environment. While Blue Zoo undertakes no inhouse breeding program relying exclusively on wild caught livestock, proper management must at least lesson the demand on the natural environment for display species. I give them full points here. I said that they avoided the Disney-esque trappings, almost. The one concession here were mermaids that swam by to the squealing delight of the masses. TMA is a bit of a purist I will grant, but can all of these people be wrongheaded or should I simply accept that the rest is a pretty good show with or without the eyecandy? Perhaps in retrospect the young ladies in the caudal fin suits are no different than the bright red parrot cichlids that drew similar admiring crowds and I am certain that in at least a few of your tanks a hybrid cichlid might be found. Anyone want me to bring them home a mermaid? Aponogetons are bulbs that grow lots of long leaves and some even reward you with flowers. Most are very easy to grow. The October 2006 issue of Tank T alk from the Durham Region Aquarium Society has several interesting articles. Kevin and Annette Omura ask “ How Is Your KH” ? in “1YS or One Year Syndrome”. T hey describe how things may be going very well in your aquarium for about a year, then problems like mouth sores appear and unexplained deaths happen. Your ammonia, nitrite and nitrate readings are zero or close to nil. You may not be testing for pH and KH. A tank may go acidic if the carbonates are slowly being used up. They describe the chemical cycle of a maturing tank and how to avoid the One Year Syndrome. Derek P.S. T ustin wrote about “ A Catfish That T alks Back” in Eyeballs on Oddballs. Find out more about Agamyxis pectinifrons, also known as the white spotted talking catfish, white spot doradid, spotted talking catfish and spotted raphael catfish. Missing your pond already ? He details visits to about a dozen fish farms and collecting sites, including the Jack Wattley Discus Hatchery and Alligator Alley. View the photo albums using the link at the end of this column. The November 2006 issue of The Scat from the St. Catharines Aquarium Society features an article by Pam Danyluck on “ Apple Snails”. She describes their breathing apparatus, feeding habits, breeding, filtration and water parameters. Try one of these unusual tropical creatures in your aquarium. In the December issue, Dave Unruh relates his experience with Gephyrochromis lawsi. This cichlid is collected in Nkhata Bay on Lake Malawi. They are a gold colour on the upper third, and a dark blue on the bottom two thirds. A sand substrate and a few rocks for hiding places is the preferred aquarium décor. T wo plants articles are featured in the December 2006 issue of Aqua Antics from the Sarnia Aquarium Society. Marc Frey writes about “ Nymphaea Lotus”. This bulb propagates by producing daughter plants on runners. There are red, green and marbled varieties. Ann Stevens writes about “ Limnophila Aquatica”. This stem plant has light green and finely branched leaves from bottom to top. Sometimes it sends shoots above the water surface to produce small blue flowers. Surf’s up ! I hope you all got what you were asking for at Christmas but most of all I hope you all had a safe and happy holiday season. So here we are a brand new year, 2007. Is it just me or since all the hoopla when the new millennium was upon us but the years seem to be just swimming by! Have you all made your New Years resolutions? One of my personal goals this year regarding our club is to keep us on the right track, growing in popularity and to keep things looking fresh and clean. During the past year our club reached some pretty impressive milestones. By the time you read this our website will have over 20 million hits for the year ending December 31. The screen captures on the next few pages were taken December 15 th. We are averaging over 4,000 unique visitors to our site every month with some months peaking just over 7,000. We average nearly 60 different countries visiting us each month. Pretty impressive statistics for our little club from Kitchener-Waterloo. I’ve worked 10 very hard to get our name out there. Try a quick Google search on us. You will be amazed at how many times you see KWAS returned. Our new club forum based on the new Vbulletin format is running quite well with very few issues. We are not seeing anywhere near the number of spam posts and we are not having the database issues we had with the free phpbb solution we were using. I thank all of you for your vote of confidence in allowing the club to purchase the new software we needed due to our growth. While it has been a huge learning curve I have enjoyed “almost” every minute of it. I have to admit keeping our website fresh and current, and dealing with the forum consumes many hours of my personal time each month. Like anything I have my challenges in keeping things as seamless as possible. As chief administrator of the forum I am ultimately responsible for everything that goes on. From a simple post about a beta with some fin damage to any number of sensitive topics that may arise. I like my team to have a relaxed approach to any of these sensitive issues. I would prefer the parties sort the issue(s) out for themselves but sometimes we have to step in with our clubs best interest at hand. While this may not seem right to all individuals every time, we have rules to follow that set the tone for our club and that is paramount. For the most part though I must say, with over 430 forum members people for the most part are very respectful and for that I thank you all. If you haven’t visited our new forum yet I encourage you to do so and come see what is going on. We can be found here www.kwas.ca/forum or you can click on any of the various links throughout our clubs website. If you have anything you would like to see on our clubs website I welcome all ideas, please email them to me at [email protected] Once again I would like to thank all of you for an exciting past year, if there is anything you would like me cover in my monthly article let me know and I’ll see what I can do. I look forward to seeing all of you come join the forum and take an active part in “your” club! Until next month take care. This year we had more stores help out with some truly amazing prizes and livestock. Lets hope our friendship with these stores and many more stores remains positive for a long time into the future. From the M cClanahan family to all the families in the club, we wish you all a happy and prosperous new year. See you at the next meeting!
