UNIVERSITY | ABOUT THE ARCHITECTS KECK BROTHERS Wisconsin-born brothers, George Fred and William Keck, are well-known for designing modern, award-winning homes in the Chicagoland area from 1935-1979. Their architecture firm, Keck & Keck, strived to bring distinguished architecture to the masses and, unlike their more famous counterparts, they succeeded. During their careers, the Keck Brothers created hundreds of affordable yet architecturally significant homes in the Midwest, making an impression on the public consciousness that still survives today. George Fred Keck designed two key model structures for the Chicago “Century of Progress” World’s Fair in 1933. He dubbed this work “House of Tomorrow” and created another similar model one year later called “Crystal House”. These two glass-heavy buildings defined Keck’s signature form of modernism and established him as a pioneer designer of passive solar houses. Keck continued to create structures with many south-facing windows intended to capture sunlight and warm the home naturally, reducing reliance on heat-energy expenditures. William Keck joined his brother to form the Keck & Keck architecture firm. Together they created a portfolio of buildings that included unique architectural features that are now considered Keck trademarks. These include a flat roof, passive solar, indirect lighting, cedar siding, radiant floor heat, post and beam construction, modular design, and fixed Thermopane windows with separate operable screened vents. Many of these trademarks can be seen at this building, including the Thermopane windows, which are the most distinctive of all the Keck trademarks. Designed in 1937, the Keck Gottschalk Keck Apartment building won awards for its international style architecture. Today this Hyde Park building at 5551 S. University is a Chicago landmark. UNIVERSITY | UNIT 1 | PRESS CHICAGO MAGAZINE ARTICLE, MARCH 6, 2014: Buy This Architectural Legend in Hyde Park A co-op in the personal home of George Fred and William Keck, the revolutionary modernist architects, is on the market BY IAN SPULA Revolutionary modernist architects George Fred and William Keck built a lot of low-slung minimalist homes in woodsy environs around Chicago. When it came down to the brothers’ own self-styled dwelling, however, they went with a red brick 3-flat co-op building that can easily stand in for a University of Chicago generating station. Don’t be fooled by the plain exterior. The Kecks put a ton of finesse and foresight into 5551 South University Avenue, much of it learned from their attention-grabbing “House of Tomorrow” experiment at the 1933 Century of Progress Exposition. In 1937, the Kecks grabbed the top two floors, and never left. U of C professor Louis Gottschalk took the bottom unit, where Arlene Crewdson has lived for 16 years. “[William] Keck’s widow was still on the top floor when my [late] husband and I moved in,” Crewdson told me by phone. Crewdson recently remarried and moved east, creating a rare opening in the building that she hopes will be filled by someone who feels a similar “sense of responsibility to the Kecks.” With little turnover and loyal caretakers, “almost every original building detail is still here, except in unit two, where the layout was changed a couple of times,” said Crewdson, referring to a period where the middle unit served as a rental and then William Keck’s office. Crewdson’s own space, on the market for $559,000, retains its black-and-white scheme with black tile bedroom flooring, white walls, original wood built-in shelving, and all-white restored bathrooms and kitchen. The kitchen has its original sink and cabinetry. “There’s even an old pull chain exhaust fan,” says Coldwell Banker’s Jennifer Ames, my escort through the property. The hardwood floors running the L-shaped living room/dining room and hallway are newer, but they’re no eyesore. J E NN I FE RA M E S.CO M • 3 1 2 .4 4 0.752 5 The only real aesthetic obstacle for would-be owners is the exterior metal louver system—it compromises clean views from inside, but gives a nice shifting expression to the building façade. It’s a trade-off not every homeowner would choose. The finer touches in the Kecks’ concept include a central wood-burning fireplace with a brick mantle, glass block windows (also permeating the steel stairwell), and a sizable balcony overlooking a shared backyard. Interestingly, an exit door in one bedroom leads to a rear stairwell. Crewdson speculates the Kecks planned for the possibility of having to split each unit in two under economic hardship. The Depression ended a few years after construction, and such a scenario never came to pass. The nearly 2,000-square-foot co-op packs in up to five bedrooms, but thanks to fairly even dimensions, it’s a cinch to swap one or two out for an office, den, or library. Unit one is the building’s largest, owing to rear balcony setbacks on floors three and four, but the tight squeeze corridor layout in the back half and nine total rooms compartmentalize the space. That’s not a problem for a couple with one or two kids, but a larger family may feel cramped. The units are stacked atop first-floor parking, with the co-op assigning each unit a space. “It’s the closest thing you can have to a house without the bother,” says Crewdson. Thick concrete walls make for an exceptionally quiet building, all the more important when you’re living opposite a 24-hour college campus. “I’ve always felt very comfortable and satisfied in this home.” PRESS | UNIT 1 | 5551 S. UNIVERSITY TOPREALESTATEDEALS.COM ARTICLE, APRIL 1, 2014: Chicago’s Hyde Park Keck Home! Chicago Architect, William Keck’s big opportunity and resulting success came when he designed two model structures for the Century of Progress exhibition in Chicago in 1933 called the “House of Tomorrow.” A modernist, with these two structures he was beginning to find his own unique style. In 1934 he designed another model, “Crystal House.” These were the first steelframed glass houses in the United States. His modernist designs caught on with other architects and homeowners who began to incorporate some of his ideas into their own homes. By the time William Keck had come this far, his brother, George Fred Keck had finished his architectural and engineering schooling so they formed an architectural practice together, Keck & Keck. In 1940, the Kecks designed the first passive solar home. When their new home design was covered in the Chicago Tribune, it was the first time the term “solar house” had been used. In 1937 the brothers designed Keck Gottschalk Keck Apartments in Hyde Park. The modular designed building is also where the brothers made their home. It was designed to have three apartments, each with its own one-car garage, a bicycle room and secure storage. Now a condominium building, one apartment is available for sale. At approximately 2,000 square feet, the unit has four bedrooms, two baths, a wood-burning fireplace, a den, library and deck. Its enviable location is in the Hyde Park neighborhood across from the University of Chicago Quad. The building was designated a Chicago landmark in 1960. Always well known, the neighborhood now has even more to recommend it since it is also the home of President Obama and his family. One of Chicago’s important landmarks, the Keck Gottschalk Keck Apartment building that was home to the Keck brothers has one unit for sale. 3 1 2 . 4 4 0.752 5 • J E N N I F E R AMES.COM LIVE & PLAY | HYDE PARK HYDE PARK Just seven miles from downtown Chicago, the historic Hyde Park neighborhood offers a range of timeless architecture, prestigious institutions, expansive green spaces, and miles of lakefront recreation. Hyde Park is home to the acclaimed University of Chicago. Founded in 1892 with the backing of John D. Rockefeller, the institution is one of the world’s most prestigious universities and integral to the fabric of the community. The University recently invested over $2 billion into both institutional and neighborhood developments. These include the Comer Children’s Hospital, the new $700 million Center for Care and Discovery, expansion and improvement of the prestigious University of Chicago Laboratory Schools, and four new charter schools. Other recent additions include the new $28 million Hyde Park Day School, which will be completed in late 2013. Hyde Park is also a contender for the Obama Presidential Library. Furthermore, the community is scheduled to be among the first in the nation to receive ultra high-speed (gigabit) Internet access. The neighborhood is host to a vibrant commercial district that includes a new Hyatt hotel, the Harper Theater cinema, and numerous restaurants – including two planned additions by Matthias Merges of Charlie Trotters fame. A Whole Foods Market location will open in 2014, complimenting the existing Treasure Island Foods. The neighborhood’s bourgeoning art community is anchored by the Hyde Park Art Center just off the lake. The area is known for its lush, beautiful parks and recreational amenities including the sprawling Jackson and Washington parks (totaling over 800 acres), public beaches, and the lakefront trail. The world-famous Museum of Science and Industry is also found here. Numerous harbors dot the shoreline, including the new 31st Street Harbor to the north, which will offer 1,000 new boat slips and two restaurants. With the 90/94 Expressway and the Green Line “L” to its west, and Lake Shore Drive, express buses, and the Metra Electric train on its east, Hyde Park offers commuters fast, easy access to downtown, the airports, and the city’s North Side.
