Q: So you sell top-end instruments or is it that you're a
niche manufacturer?
A: Well, we do certainly sell
niche pieces and some of
our instruments are very high
quality (especially compared
to similar items sold overseas), but mostly what we're
interested in is creating a
great product. We want to
have incredible sound, great
ergonomics, styling and
design.
Music is an emotional experience, especially for musicians. We want our instruments to connect with them
on an intimate level, emotionally.
Q: Do you do everything inhouse or are there parts that
are outsourced.
A: No, everything we put our
name on is manufactured
right here in Woodfin.
Q: What are you best known
for?
A: Without question, the
minimoog. It's considered by
virtually everyone who plays
to be the number one synthesizer of all time. It's won
many contests and always
comes on top on musician's
surveys. We've been making it since the early 1970s.
We introduced a new Moog
guitar recently and that's been
getting a lot of very positive
feedback.
Q: Can you name a few musicians who use Moog instruments?
A: Laurie (Anderson), sure,
Reggie opened shop following a stint as a Flash Team Leader in
St. Louis. “It was a very unusual company and they really helped
me create a business model,” he says.
“While I was working with them they were very open with sharing
their knowledge, and I learned a lot from them.”
When Reggie moved to Asheville five years ago, he brought his
passion and financial knowledge with him and now attracts clients
throughout the country while he sets his own hours and pace.
“I usually have several projects going on at the same time,” he
laughs, adding that he’s also able to work with many artists and
musicians.
He counts as clients the celebrated fusion band Toubab Krewe,
Bonesteel Films and sculptor Robert Winkler. “Working with creative people is one of the perks of the job,” he says, adding: “I get
to meet a lot of interesting people.”
Reggie has a four-year-old daughter who feeds a piggybank on a
regular basis, and he’s dedicated to teaching her financial literacy
at an early age. He says one of his few regrets is spending money
on consumer items of questionable worth when he was young. “If
I could go back, I’d be better on saving, and be less caught up in
getting the newest trendy things. Those things might seem worth it
now, but trust me: they will seem unimportant when you get older.”
Q: Do you sell a lot to local
musicians?
A: Forty-five percent of our
business is international. We
have huge markets in New
York and California. We support the local scene, but we're
very global. We have a lot of
customers in the UK, Japan,
and Germany, too.

“After looking at it (design), I was hooked. It married two sides of
me. My mom was an artist and my dad is an engineer. Graphic
design really is a marriage of the two sides – detail-oriented and
also the creative side of it.”

during the holidays.
“It’s always good to know that we have such wonderful
friends who remember the needs of our children,” Chris
says about the donation.

Don’t fear the tax man
Telco will hold tax preparation days
throughout February in our Downtown
and Main offices. Through a unique
partnership with OnTrack Financial Education and Counseling, we can provide
one-on-one sessions with a professional. These sessions will be offered in
both English and Spanish, and limited
shuttle service will be available for those
in the Asheville area.
Sometimes filing your own tax returns
can mean missing out on deductions
and other breaks. Those of modest
means are especially vulnerable, since
they often cannot afford an accountant to help with taxes. This frequently
means fewer dollars in your pockets.
With the economy so tight, it’s important
to keep as much of your money as possible.

Reggie says that he has always worked with credit unions and

Santa has a big heart
Most of our adult lives are spent at work.
It was a godsend at Southmountain Children and Family Services, a foster community for abused, neglected and abandoned
children in Nebo, NC, 15 minutes from
Morganton. The very night the stocking was
donated by Telco Community Credit Union
(TCCU), the facility had admitted two new
children and toys were scarce.

The secret to success (and happiness) isn’t
to accumulate the most toys, according to local business owner Reggie Tidwell. It’s to get
paid to do something you love so much that
you’d do it for free.
“I tell people, ‘don’t choose a career based
on how much money you think you’ll make.
Choose something that you know you will
love and then the money will come’.”
Reggie owns and operates Curve Theory,
an Asheville-based company that creates
high-impact graphics and Web sites. Oftentimes Reggie will also contribute professional
photography to his projects, which allows
him to express himself creatively in ways that
most of us can only dream about.

“I like being able to wear different hats,” he
says. “The work I do combines my skills and
passions well.”

Reggie originally enrolled in an interior design
program, but realized that wasn’t the direction for him. A mentor-teacher persuaded
him that he should focus more exclusively on
graphic design, and the rest, as they say, is
history.

Answer: We make electronic musical instruments.
Some of our instruments
are very expensive, so we
don't get a lot of new-school
people, but if you're a serious musician, you've heard
about us and know our stuff.

It was a big stocking – the world’s largest.
Six feet tall, full of toys, the sort of gift that
would be the envy of any neighborhood.
“They’re just little babies (three and fouryears-old) and it was wonderful to have
toys waiting for them,” said Executive
Director Chris Jernigan.
The foster community – Chris calls it a foster village – is comprised of eight homes.
Married couples live in each of these
modest brick houses with five children.
This nurturing environment is designed to
help build life skills and mend emotional
wounds, but holidays can still be bittersweet. Some children have ties to family
and for many youngsters Christmas is an
emotional time, a reminder of what has
been lost.
“Most kids do want to be with family, but
some have lost family members and Christmas is a tough time,” Chris says.
Telco has donated for years through its
Charity Committee and won the Dora Maxwell Social Responsibility award in 2008
for just this sort of community involvement.
“We see it as part of our mission,” says
TCCU president and CEO Rita Gentry. “It’s
